Cutting the noise from overthinking the first page of my sketchbook

  • I am not a sketchbook painter. In fact I prefer to paint on loosesheets. What spurred this was really from a lack of time and wanting to still keep a creative practice flowing - so I thought maybe if its a smaller scale, it would be sustainable and possibly something I can keep up with.
One thing I dislike about sketchbooks is the paper - I often feel like the paper is hard to work with. To counter that - I decided to work with new mediums like goache to start with. We will always have some 'roadblock' that can hinder what we truly want and in my case - it was just to make time creating. So today - watch me as I dive into my first page of my sketchbook creating marks.
If this video resonated with you and you enjoyed it - don't forget to leave me a comment so we can chat!
I'd love to hear your thoughts :)

“Leap of Faith.” When I heard you say this, it became the theme for my new sketchbook. Your tips on improving our internal dialogue/struggles with self-talk are a big help. I’m glad I’ve discovered your channel.

Your intention is so beautiful! A leap of faith is really something magical because you never really know what can unfold in the process. I m glad you find the tips helpful too! ☺️ thank you for being here Susan!

Hi Jillian, you are such a treasure. Thank you sooo much. Today you made me realise that I’d actually forgotten I love painting and that lately, just as you said, I’ve been worrying too much about the outcome. Then I was painting along with you (different flowers and leaves) and I was so much more relaxed and having fun instead of worrying about how it was turning out and I’m so happy with the results. Thanks again! ❤

Also this collection of paint and strokes in your sketchbook reminds me of the Vincent Van Gogh painting in “Working with Flowers”. I could see it coming alive as you were painting. So inspiring.

I just found you on Utube and what a revelation! Emma Lefebvre, who is another extremely talented artist, recommended you in one of her videos. You are truly a gift. Your explanation of not to be afraid of an empty white page opened up a new perspective for me. I can’t wait to go into my studio and pick up my brush and just create. Your use of color and strokes is magical. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!❤

I love the way you allowed yourself the freedom to experiment, this turned out so colorful and playful. This is one of my favorite videos of yours. It's amazing what we can do when we allow ourselves to view things through the eyes of a child.
More importantly, you have a beautiful family! Thank you for sharing.

I absolutely LOVE seeing the vlog style video!!!!! Love seeing your girls for a quick second and seeing the person behind the art. This was a great addition to the usual style of your videos. It is such a weird thing to feel connected to a stranger across the world but you put so much effort into your students and this was perfection!!!

Carissa its so lovely you tuned in here and super nice that you "watched me" do my thing. Haha I decided to make content for my channel in a way that I want to and decide on and I like creating some magic in the mundaneness of the day. I get where you are coming from that the mental block ends up coming from knowing too much instead of not knowing. It's a strange conundrum almost like "I don't know what to wear" because we have too much clothes and not because we don't have enough 😅 and yess my sketchbook is all about mixing things up and playing. So it goes away from getting locked in and doing things a certain way 🎉 hurrah for you noticing your own internal voice and wanting to bring it out as your own ❤ that's a huge win carissa!

    Love this!
I did a “Painting without Pressure” series a few weeks back on cheap sketchbooks. My main reason was when I was using expensive watercolour paper I felt restricted in my paintings, like you say I felt I had to have an outcome!
This exercise and series really helped me get loose and experiment 😊

Oh yes Rita! I remember seeing your painting without pressure posts ❤have to say those are amazing to watch and really inspiring because it is about painting more of what we love and when you love it - it's easy ❤

Same!!! I start over thinking and all tripped up in my head when I am using the good paper.... but at the same time, I know that the crap paper will never turn out well because of it. I also noticed that when I first started buying high quality paper and blocks, they were small sizes because that was less expensive. Working small is fine but it was really limiting my brush strokes and training my fingers to paint, rather than my arm to glide.

@carissapicchi8199 this is just magic because your revelations around what you notice with how you paint is everything!!! It's the start of really just knowing what works for you and how it works instead of what others are doing!

Additionally...... I realized while watching this that I have been SO focused on learning the art of loose watercolor florals that I have forgotten that there are no rules saying I can only use the one medium. There is no rule saying that I cant take gouache or acrylic or pencils or neocolors to revise the one little area on one flower that in my mind ruins the entire page. How silly and narrow minded of me. THANK YOU!!!!

Just curious - did you have an overall composition in mind when you started this or did it all just come together eventually at the end, and you figured it out along the way?
