Jersualem & Narnia, are both better Christian rock bands...
Petra on the other hand is on par with Stryper, a top Christian rock back that does not quite reach the level of musical brilliance of either Jerusalem or Narnia.

@@OmenAkumaru20223 Sorry, not even close, Petra is far better than stryper or the bands you linked; probably why they were more popular than your favs; and Petra was more mainstream than stryper for that reason: John Schlitt, in his prime, was one of the best vocalists in the business, imo. Of course, art is subjective, but the bible based lyrics of some of petra's songs helped me through some rough times.

Me too. It's wonderful, the same thing happened to me and happens. I've been listening to them since I was a teenager. I am now 48 years old
I've loved this song for years, since it originally came out. But it took on a new meaning when my husband, who was in the last stages of cancer and near his "change of address" time, had me put it on repeat for him. It kept reminding him that "through the desperate night", the valley of the shadow of death, His Lord & Saviour was right there with him.
This is my favorite song on the album. I got the album when it came out in '87. In fall of '88 I started college while many spiritual battles were going on in my life. I leaned on this song pretty hard as I waited for what seemed like an eternity before the "On Fire" album came out near the end of '88. So good to hear it again.

@@RangerCJ I went all the way back through my comments to find this...I couldn't remember when or where I commented on a Petra video,. Total classic! That was an amazing night. I still have my pictures. Greenville, the old Memorial Auditorium!
First Christian concert I ever attended was Petra on the "Rock Cries Out" tour. I was blown away....I never looked back.
I was 15 at the time I first heard this in 87. Petra and other Christian rock bands I believe kept me from the party scene of the 80s which was considered the thing to do then. Especially for a young teenager!

Petra was one of my favorite bands in my youth. Listening to this song again now after all I've been through in life and my journey with Christ brings such joy. I love the line in the song "My rock my comfort my peace my salvation my refuge my God, you are my rock"! He truly is all that to me!

Back To The Street,and this album helped me as a young Airman in the Air Force. I didn't have any other believers with whom I could fellowship. Sure I went to church,but that was only once a week. Thanks for reminding me how God sustains us in difficult times.

I'm not religious but I've always listened to Petra and love their music and message. Doesn't get much better then this when you need to be in a great mood.
It feels good that you say that but in the same time hard to imagine that someone enjoys this and helps the mood without believing,. Give your life to Jesus and you may feel the comfort that comes reality

For all of the praise of this song people are speaking, nothing is being said about the amazing "chug chugs" played by the guitar as the chorus starts, especially at the end of the song.

i used to listen to this when i was watching parts of myself i didn't know were chaff get blown away. it's amazing how much a person will back away and conform to society when there's no Rock under them. it's equally amazing how much flak you catch when you're not allowed to bob and weave.

This brings back memories of when i was a teenage born again christian - some good times - but it also brings back very bad and at times traumatic memories of pastors and other bigoted biased small minded judgemental so called people of god !! free thinking is not something people of faith are capable of. if they think something is wrong then it is wrong against god and satanic and they will use scripture against you to their own point of view.

the only time i have heard polyphony that good, was Pink Floyd's 'Keep talking'. They mixed theirs digitally. Petra had to do the whole thing analog! And they did better.
Hope this doesn't turn people off to Christian rock, but even after leaving my faith I still love this song! Most Christian music is crap, but Petra is awesome!
Atheist Journey You never left the faith. There is a reason God lead you listen to a song entitled "You Are My Rock". He still loves you & is pulling you back. Jesus Christ never lied, so when he says he's coming back (Revelation 22:7)......that's a 100% guarantee. Don't be caught without him. :) ~ peace

You know, it's funny, I was just thinking about that song when I saw your comment. I looked up the lyrics because I wanted to sing it to myself, and then I looked at your reply and saw that it was about that very song.
I was thinking about that song because there's this girl that I think I like, but every time I think about her, "I hear another voice inside my head."
It's the voice of a very bullying (real bullying, not just "witnessing" that I don't like), homophobic relative, saying that it's an abomination, but I've seen him eat bacon-wrapped shrimp many times, and that's a double abomination.
But I know now that if God is real, that God doesn't make mistakes, and that He's happy that He made me partly lesbian. Petra has given me the strength to listen to God alone, and not the bullies. I finally got up the courage to talk to her because of Petra.
I'm still dealing with the negative voices, saying that I'm no good and not worth anything, but I finally have the strength to begin being myself, and to fight back against the other voices in my head.
I know now that if God is real, then He loves me just the way I am, and if I'm missing something, that I'm eventually going to know the truth in my lifetime.

Atheist Journey Know that God has awsome love for us until etirnity. I became a believer and shortly after i listened to Petra, because i bought a CD in some Brazilian shop. I will never forget that love and i will asociate Petra with the moment i came to believe, it's stronger then any bullying sjit or people who condemn you. Who is without sins, shall throw the first rock.

"Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing" (Job 8:21).
What is glorifying God, but a rejoicing at that glory he has displayed? An understanding of the perfections of God, merely, cannot be the end of the creation; for he had as good not understand it, as see it and not be at all moved with joy at the sight.
Neither can the highest end of creation be the declaring God’s glory to others; for the declaring God’s glory is good for nothing otherwise than to raise joy in ourselves and others at what is declared.
God is glorified not only by his glory’s being seen, but by its being rejoiced in. When those that see it delight in it, God is more glorified than if they only see it.
God made the world that he might communicate, and the creature receive, his glory . . . both [with] the mind and the heart. He that testifies his having an idea of God’s glory [doesn’t] glorify God so much as he that testifies also his approbation [i.e., his heartfelt commendation or praise] of it and his delight in it.
My point is that passionate and joyful admiration of God, and not merely intellectual apprehension, is the aim of our existence. If God is to be supremely glorified in us it’s critically essential that we be supremely glad in him and in what he has done for us in Jesus.
This is Christian Joy. Enjoying God is not a secondary, tangential endeavor. It is central to everything we do. We do not do other things hoping that joy in God will emerge as a by-product.
Our reason for the pursuit of God and obedience to Him is precisely the joy that is found in Him alone. To come to God or to worship Him or to yield to His moral will for any reason other than the joy that is found in who He is.
All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. And, I believe God purposefully designed us to pursue happiness.
If a friend says to you, "I really enjoy being with you," you wouldn't accuse him of being self-centered. Why? Because your friend's delight in you is the evidence that you have great value in his heart.
In fact, you'd be dishonored if he didn't experience any pleasure in your friendship. The same is true of God. If God is the source of our greatest delight then God is our most precious treasure; which makes us radically God-centered and not self-centered. And if we treasure God most, we glorify Him most.
Does the Bible teach this? Yes. Nowhere in the Bible does God condemn people for longing to be happy. People are condemned for forsaking God and seeking their happiness elsewhere (Jeremiah 2:13). This is the essence of sin. The Bible actually commands us to delight in the Lord (Psalm 37:4).
Jesus teaches us to love God because our heart is where our treasure is (Matthew 6:21). Paul wants us to believe that gaining Christ is worth the loss of everything else (Philippians 3:8) and the author of Hebrews exhorts us to endure suffering, like Jesus, for the joy set before us (Hebrews 12:1-2).
Christian Joy is not a contradiction after all. It is desiring the vast, ocean-deep pleasures of God more than the mud-puddle pleasures of lust. God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.
Our glad-hearted passion for God is exceeded only by God’s glad-hearted passion for God. If the chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever, the chief end of God is to glorify God and to enjoy Himself forever!
What is the pre-eminent passion in God’s heart? What is God’s greatest pleasure? In what does God take supreme delight? I want to suggest that the pre-eminent passion in God’s heart is his own glory.
God is at the center of his own affections. The supreme love of God’s life is God. God is pre-eminently committed to the fame of his name. God is himself the end for which God created the world.
Better, still, God’s immediate goal in all he does is his own glory. God relentlessly and unceasingly creates, rules, orders, directs, speaks, judges, saves, destroys and delivers in order to make known who He is and to secure from the whole of the universe the praise, honor and glory of which He and He alone is ultimately and infinitely worthy.
Praise is the consummation of enjoyment. All enjoyment tends towards praise and adoration as its appointed end. In this way, God’s seeking His own glory and God’s seeking your good converge.
Your greatest good is in the enjoyment of God. God’s greatest glory is in being enjoyed. So, for God to seek His glory in your worship of Him is the most loving thing He can do for you. Only by seeking His glory pre-eminently can God seek your good passionately.
For God to work for your enjoyment of Him (that’s His love for you) and for His glory in being enjoyed (that’s His love for Himself) are not properly distinct.
