With the introduction of ECM for our Viper, we will start with the ALQ-184 short pod, and then follow it with the ALQ-184 long pod and ALQ-131 pod.
ECM operations can be conducted in Self Protection Jammer (SPJ) mode (Position 1 and 2 on the Transmit switch) and Barrage Noise Jammer (Position 3 on the Transmit switch). CMS aft and right on the control stick are used to activate and deactivate ECM transmission.
ECM is most effective against hostile radar acquisition greater than 25 nm. Under this range, ECM is less effective. We have plans though to further improve our global ECM environment with more effective and realistic jamming effects.
For SPJ Position 1 and 2, we hope to later enable Radar Priority for Position 1 and Jammer Priority for Position 2 (also for the Hornet), but it is not possible currently. For now, Position 1 and 2 behave the same as Radar in Priority.
In parallel, we are also adding jamming effects to the FCR.

@@Mr.Funplayer Well, since we (squadron) use skynet and moose in a very nasty configuration where a sam (which might be hidden on the mfd) sometimes goes active only at 30% range for a surprise dead shot I sure am thankful for this jammer.
Range ist not my concern... also a harm does not much if the site is protected by sa-15s and shuts off its radar.
@@Lorian667 HARMs don't have GPS backup? I thought going cold was only effective agaisnt older model ARMs like the Shrike.

correction, the jammer dont make you invisible but the contrary, is like showing 3000 clones of you, they can cleary see that is a contact but cant determine the correct range/altitude because there is so much return

If the SPJ will not activate when confronted with TWS or other seemingly passive radar sources, and Jam mode may be better for most players. Active noise should defend against EW and AWACS and keep them from generating data that would end up on the DL. Noise is also able to avoid ECCM, which rotates frequencies to counteract SPJ reactions, since it broadcasts on all frequencies.
SPJ in the current DCS strategy paradigm only seems to be useful vs STT locks and launch/terminal guidance radar modes and not TWS / DL radar modes. IRL this would make sense if an ECM system were unable to determine if a radar is in a hostile mode, which would keep the SPJ from activating.
From a tactical perspective it may be useful to keep noise mode on to create a distraction for an enemy while other units attack from another direction in EMCON (at least as far as DCS regards it) out of site or range from an EW or AWACS. The AI do respond to the presence of jamming as hostile contacts and this tactic works against them.
Can we expect to see the same or similar capabilities migrating to the A-10C II as well since it carries the same pods?

I think Grim Reapers did a video and it lets you get like 5-10% closer to SOME assets than a non-equipped aircraft. I think ECM needs work, but Wags has said its coming in the video description

The JF17 pod has modes for fwd, rear or both so I'd guess this is the same.

Does this affect the Viper's radar in the same way as the Hornet's radar, in that it shuts off when the jammer fires?
I don't think so, as this is an external pod which is not relying on airplane's own radar
@@CBilir the ASPJ doesn't rely on the airplane's radar either...
Usually what CMS left does, determining if the jammer or FCR has priority. If the ALQ interferes with FCR probably depends on the particular band being jammed and if information about the nature of jamming allows FCR to ignore the misinformation.
From the end of the video it seems that radar keeps working after he gets locked and "Jammer" warning plays

Any intentions in the ECM arena to make chaffs more accurate and appear as radar returns on scope etc? Would be nice to hide behind a wall of chaffs sometime :)
Chaff should not appear on doppler radar with a doppler speed gate.

@@mumblerinc.6660 Instead of been a part of the toxic DCS community why not try teach others, maybe by saying something like "what you're likely seeing is the result of being in RWS mode, those are ghost contacts which remain after each pass of the radar. Switch over to TWS".
Don't knock people for making simple mistakes, I clearly said that I'd seen aircraft releasing chaff and then also seeing returns on the radar. Not everyone knows every little facet of the sim, learn to teach my friend, don't be toxic it doesn't help anyone and there are far too many people like you in this game.
For me it feels like chaffs in current state is total rng and when applied in a notch yeah they mostly work. But i can't turn around in behind them and be hidden by a wall that has bigger rcs than my airframe. Also no choice in bands and so on.
Also jammers in general just shouts to try neglect distance and altitude info, not moving you around in space to confuse.
@@mumblerinc.6660 That is not entirely correct. IRL the aspect of chaff release does not really matter because it forms a cloud of pseudostationary radar returns of an approximately spheroid object.
The aspect of the plane that releases it DOES matter both in real life and the game because beaming/notching the RADAR emitter on an active homing RADAR guided missile causes a temporary loss of lock, if chaff are detected by the missile inside it's acquisition window there is a chance it will acquire one of those instead and fly through rather than reacquire the aircraft. If the plane has a hot/cold/flank (NOT BEAMING) aspect, the missile will not lose the lock and the chaff will be 0% effective. This has been repeatedly tested on many youtube videos as well as my own personal experience, chaff alone doesn't cause missiles to lose lock ever. This is why you can dump your entire plane's payload of chaff at a missile on your 6o'clock and it will do nothing.
CONTRAST with the flares which have a percent chance to cause incoming missiles to LOSE their lock and switch over to a flare target

I think you can both use ECM and fcr at the same time as it doesn't use the FCR to emit signals unlike the hornet

What is the difference of CMDS mode knob auto/semi and that xmit 1-2-3 switch?
And what that XMIT swtch #2 do? Does Xmit switch change from SPJ between that anthorer mentioned primary mode OR: If / when one changes between primary modes form CMDS (mansemi like in here? changes form SPJ to another pri mode?? ) But what does that XMIT 1-2-3 switch do? And what does the "Auto" do in CMDS mode knob? Is that like "no need for ECM aft when / if locked" to do transmit? Confused. what if i put like xmit to number 3 and put CMDS swith to auto? What happens then. Or XMIT to #2 and semi.. Well you get the point what I am looking.. ?

when will we see an improvement of the taxi models in DCS ?
For example a Cessna 172 with 3 passengers onboard will start to taxi when the thrust is on idle and a MD80 will start taxi when thrust is on idle too. In a lot of Handbooks of fighter, they writing that when the Fuel stand is low the aircraft will start to taxi when on Idle, the Navops for the F14 says you can taxi with one Engine when the fuel is low.

This is cool and all, but when are we getting the tail hook modeled in the 16? Show them F18/F14 guys how a real fighter lands on a carrier.
Since I typicallly use bypass so I can count get myself….would this prevent the 16 from audible lock warnings? Seems like I get zero warnings and just get blown out of the sky. Thanks!

Hornet is using it's own radar as jammer this pod is separaate independent thing

Littlebit of confused. What is the difference of semi and auto in modes 1 and 2 (forget my older question, that was mambojambo.. ) What confuses me, is what is the big difference between auto and semi. what does full auto mode do that semiauto doesnt?
Use it in semi though, no problems with that, just that what do one use the "auto" mode for...?
well in other F-16 sim that cant be named. Mode 1 is used to jam aft aspect (rear) and mode 2 is used to jam both forward and aft aspect. I have no idea which one is correct as ECM thing is classified stuff. CMIW.

Hello everyone. Im really new at DCS and a VIper Fan. I use DCS open BETA and i also use DCS Trial. But i can not use this POD. I mean it is not in the Weapon Store and the ECM Panel is not working. Is this ECM comming soon in the next update or must i do anything to use this? New Install or other things?

It says "COMING SOON" so this doesn't exist in the game at the moment. If you stay on the open beta you will get it as soon as they make it available through an update, so you just need to wait

give me a reason to buy F18 now? F18 IRL has some supports that makes it reliable to be used but in DCS you have no reason to use anything but F16. It's better in any case imaginable. I do own every module but as F18 main in game, I sometimes feel that I'm there so that F16 pilots can learn how to combat.

So when will we have PRIORITY mode so we can use ECM and our radar at the same in the F-18? It's quite frustrating that the feature isn't there after several months of the ASPJ being functional.

So it functions differently from what it does on the A-10C, despite being the exact same equipment...
In the Warthog, it only transmits, highlighting the "OPR" symbology on the ECM panel for a short period and then it goes back to RDY, which, in my opinion, makes the jammer pretty much useless for the A-10C.
That's not entirely true. If you get locked up in that period, jammer will continue jamming, if not, it goes back to standby. That's probably realistic.
In version 2, it's toggle on/off.
