I had the 24mm and switched to the 20mm, but I miss the F 1.4... Also even though the 20mm is wider, if you get too close when logging, it distorts your face more. I was thinking a great compact 2 lens kit would the be the 24mm F1.4 and the Sigma 28-70 2.8 on the Sony A7C. Covers a big range. At the longer focal length 2.8 is still enough to get you a nice defocused background. Wide and shallow is more rare than long and shallow.
@Michael San Wrong. I have both. Its not like this, especially as the bokeh of the 35mm 1.8 sucks. Also the 24mm 1.4 GM is way, way sharper and better lens than the 35mm 1.8. Thanks for the review! Which focal length do you think is better for talking head youtube stuff? Do you feel like 24mm is unflattering? Just picked up an A7C and am looking for a lens.
I’m in the same boat and I have reached analysis paralysis! The 35mm looks much more versatile and definitely fun for photography, but maybe the 24 for studio space? I keep reading that the 20mm is also the lens of choice for other content creators.
Sony lists the 24GM lens as "linear" MF, but while it's close, I'm not seeing it being linear. I'm getting wander in focus points when pulling focus depending on the speed that I rack. I thought I had issues with my puller, but my other lenses were working fine. When pulling focus back and forth between two subjects during a documentary shoot, I was losing my A and B's so I decided to test the lens out on the bench (two objects about 3 feet apart) and sure enough, depending on the speed I will lose the stop points. It seems like when I throw fast one way and slow back the other way, is when the major wander happens, but there's slight wander no matter what (and with shallow DoF that's a killer). I cannot duplicate this on the 35mm G, 20mm G, the 70-200mm GM or the 70-200mm F/4 which are all linear lenses (with linear motors, ironically)- those lenses work perfectly and hold A and B points perfectly. The 24GM lists that it actually has a DDSSM motor, not the typical Linear motors that all the linear focus lenses have (to include the new 50 GM and 35 GM also featured in the video here) and wondering if I either have a bad copy, or did Sony "try" to make this lens a linear manual focus lens as best they could so they could label it that way, but in real world applications, it's still not quite linear? And wondering how the 35 GM performs in that regard as Sony lists it as linear MF as well, but the lens also features the newer Linear Motor (not the old DDSSM motor).
I’m a 24/50 guy. Such a versatile combo for photography and videography. I’m personally not a fan of the 35mm. By the way, the 35mm GM lens has horrible focus breathing for those considering to use it for video.
And the 24 doesn’t ? Unfortunately both are horrible for video, they breath way too much and 24 pulses like crazy when trying to acquire focus. They’re both fine with new sony’s that have focus breathing comp.
hmmmm all you guys making these videos saying the 35 is perfect. and this was the year i wanted to save all my money. can you just make one fake review saying its terrible so i can stay on track with my budget?
it means both are the same according to quality and all prospectus except focal length. btw thank you Sidney its always been helpful to watch you with the funny moves.
thanks Sidney. Always enjoy your videos. My favorite length is 35mm. I picked up the 1.8 version because I've heard things about focus breathing on the G master version. I'm going to pick up the 24mm G master because Its a focal length I can see using in both stills and video
@@photosblossomsau1624 We actually shoot multicam often 5 cameras, 3X A7Siii and 2x A7iv. Therefore we have 14mm GM, 24mm GM, 35mm GM, 50mm GM, 90mm G, 135MM GM, 70-200mm GM and 200-600mm G. The 35mm 1.8 is sold and missed for it's minimal breathing, but in moving shots or moving objects we make sure to pair the 35 and the 50 with the A7vi to leverage the lens breathing compensation.
@@photosblossomsau1624 It is hard to answer that question accurately, but I will share my thoughts and experiences and you can take it with a grain of salt. First of all, if you dont have a standard zoom, either Sigma 24-70 DN, Tamron 28-75, Sony Zeiss 24-70 or the Sony GM 24-70, I would recommend starting with that. If you have a standard zoom: It is really a question of whether to go wide or not. The 24mm 1.4 is extremely popular for a reason. We lso love the 14mm GM for its incerdibly small form factor and light weight, AF performace and image quality. The 50mm Gm f1.2 is a must for us. We love it to death, and even if we adored the 50mm Zeiss, we have not missed it since getting the GM. With regards to a tighter prime, the standard portait focal lenght of 85mm is a little dicey at the moment. The GM version is getting old in the tooth and the Sigma has had some problems with dust getting into the lens. Sigma has appearantly fixed the problem now, but I have seen people who still struggle, some who dont. If you can get a second hand 85mm GM, that might be a choice. According to rumours the 85mm GM is getting an update next year however, so it might be a good idea to hold on. We sold our 85mm GM last year, and will absolutely buy gen 2 when it comes out. Personally I love both the 90mm G and the 135mm GM. They both have their strenghts and weaknesses. The 90mms strenghts are of course the macro capabilities, its remarkable sharpness and the focus clutch. The weakness is mainly its AF system, which is old and slower than the newer Sony primes. However with Sonys latest cameras the lens function pretty well even with face/eye tracking. The 135mm is for me perfect in every way. Its only weakness, and I hesitate calling it that, is that it would be too tight, making it more of a niche lens. I love it as a B- or C-cam lens for interviews, close ups of products etc etc.

hi siddy, mostly filming in my 35 sqm living room, 24MM GM or 35MM GM?
Oh should I just get a 16-35gm?
Just the video i need Sidney! I have the 24 gm, 40mm Batis, and 85 fe but was thinking about selling the 40 and 24 to get the 35mm gm. Worried about video performance though (e.g focus breathing and close ups for product videos). Thoughts?
I would say that's a great decision! 35mm and 85mm would be killer primes to have!
I find 24/50 a lot more versatile for video.
@@ghas4151 why do you think they’re better for video?
I have the 20mm 1.8. Which lens would be good with it for video on the a7siii? Talking head, short films, etc.
If I had to pick a prime, I’d have to go with the 35mm personally
Do they have different focusing motors?
Hi, did you find important focus breathing when filming with 35 1.4?
Isn’t the motor in the 35mm different/better?
I already have the 24mm and I love it. I will go in for the Sigma 24-70 instead of Sony 35 since my only full frame focal lens for is the 70-200
24mm 1.4, because with apsc mode, i have a 35mm F2 :D
35mm is my most-used focal length. I guess that makes it my favorite. I have a GM coming this week to go with the 20mm and 50mm G lenses.
Damn aren’t they all similar focal length.
What lenses do you have in total? Having used most of it which one do you recommend to have
@@photosblossomsau1624 Well, I was going with a 2 lens set up with the 20mm and 50mm G lenses. Then someone wanted to buy me a gift, so that's how I ended up with the 35mm GM. I only have the three lenses and hardly ever use the 50mm now. I wish it was an 85mm.
@@HGQjazz
Okay so based on what you said
20g 35gm and 85 would be the best choice for you? Which 85?
@@HGQjazz so you want the 20 35 and 85 combo?
@@photosblossomsau1624 On Sony I'd just run the 85mm 1.8
35!! Got up at 4:30 this morning to pre-order lol!
That's early!!!
what do you think about "focus breathing" on 35 gm?
do you think the 14-24 dg dn is good for astro?
Oh heck ya! That lens is super wide!
@@SidneyDiongzon mostly wondering if the aperture is wide enough. gonna wait for the 16mm f1.8 g master releasing in a couple weeks
@@markchen5710 its great for astro!
24mm for me, it's better. I can assign or customise CLEAR IMAGE ZOOM to achieve a very good result as 35mm.
Sidney! :) Please, plese, compare all 35 1.4 for sony, zeiss, samyang, sigma and the gm - background blur, colors etc.
This is the exact videos I needed thanks
Glad this was helpful!
Do you think a6400 is better than m50 in 2021?!
Yep! 100%
Which is the best choice for videography ?
35mm
24, 50, 105 is what I'm set on!
Both! 😄.I have 24 and I want 35 too!
Are they the same linear motor?
Thank you!
All that footage is out of camera right?
I had to color grade it
hmmmm all you guys making these videos saying the 35 is perfect. and this was the year i wanted to save all my money. can you just make one fake review saying its terrible so i can stay on track with my budget?
Sidney like always, thank you for the video but which dragons?? Did you mean the angels?? :)
Team 35mm 1.4G. Always loved 35mm focal length.
With picture profile?
People are overblowing the focus breathing aren't they?
Great review! Thanks Sidney 😎
Thanks Sidney. Love your informative videos!
Glad you like them!
if someone sell their 24 1.4 for 35 1.4, so why bother bought 24mm that time? I mean there' s FE 35 1.4 if they know their FL needs
I would get the 12-24 gm
and the 35mm 1.4 gm
You didn't talked about focus breathing. 35 is horrible
24mm is the best
Thank you for your help!!!
It's different price on 2nd hand market, 24m is significantly cheaper, this means something😁
it means both are the same according to quality and all prospectus except focal length.
btw thank you Sidney its always been helpful to watch you with the funny moves.
thanks Sidney. Always enjoy your videos. My favorite length is 35mm. I picked up the 1.8 version because I've heard things about focus breathing on the G master version. I'm going to pick up the 24mm G master because Its a focal length I can see using in both stills and video
Nice Sid! I have neither of them but came to watch you try to convince me :)
Hahah Thanks for watching!

dude you are such a funny guy and i enjoyed watching you so much i almost forgot about the lenses haha
Thanks so much!!
best reviews always
I was looking for a lense to make my subject stand out, I'm going for the 35mm.
This is good stuff. Good stuff
it's like asking should i buy a motorcycle or a car.
lol not even close
I like my 24mm so much !
Team Wishful Thinking hands down!
The 24 can basically be a 35 (36) at the push of a button. You’re welcome. Get the 24
This is a good ass question
Team 24mm….. for APS-C camera.
there was definitely no neighbor over there
When people complain they don’t have lights but you can just use the window light haha. Still looks great
We have the 24GM and will get the 35GM! The 35 1.8 is great, but as soon as we can sell that, we will get the GM 1.4! ❤️
So you have both? Aren’t both very similar?
@@photosblossomsau1624 We actually shoot multicam often 5 cameras, 3X A7Siii and 2x A7iv. Therefore we have 14mm GM, 24mm GM, 35mm GM, 50mm GM, 90mm G, 135MM GM, 70-200mm GM and 200-600mm G. The 35mm 1.8 is sold and missed for it's minimal breathing, but in moving shots or moving objects we make sure to pair the 35 and the 50 with the A7vi to leverage the lens breathing compensation.
@@marikenogmartinmedia
Wow!! Please recommend me three or four lenses. I do everything basically

Thank you so much for explaining so in detail!! So I believe based on your explanation your fav lenses are
14gm 24gm 50gm and 135 gm. I have had few lenses in the past and I felt like I’m not a fan of zoom lenses except the telephoto once - 70-200
I just couldn’t make up my mind wether I should get the 24 and 50 or 20 and 35 and then add 85 as well
I have both 🤪
20,35 AND 85 GG
