actually it has 3 tenders. The one in this video, then it has 2 auxilery tenders 425A and 425AT. The 425A is the one they used last year and the 425AT is the one they have been useing this year. 425A they keep in Jim Thorpe and the other one travels with the 425. However, due to these trips being relatively short, the dont use the aux tender with it. at about 3:23 in the video u can see the two aux tenders to the right of the engine. It takes water from them when it needs it.
That's exactly what the whistle sounded like. Watch the other videos from that weekend. Ask anyone else who was there as well, they'll agree. Nothing wrong with the mic on my camera.
Actually the ashpan was not new at the time of this video. It was completely replaced after this weekend. The coal was indeed to small but that was corrected after this weekend also. The crew does NOT hate it, we love it....its just about the best you can buy these days. As for the whistle....we love it and will be one again this year.....
From what my source tells me, the coal they were using was a bit smaller than what they've run in the past - it never was a problem before, because the ash was too big to fall through down at the bottom - when they were using the smaller coal, the ash was smaller, and therefore, flowing more freely from the bottom of the train. Yah. That's an issue. But my source tells me there was a high-rail truck following the train from Duryea yesterday, putting out whatever fires/ash issues came along.
Actually the ash pan was NOT new at the time of the video, it was completly replaced after this weekend. As for the coal...this load was a little to small but still great coal, just about as good as you can buy. Smoke......a properly fired engine should have minimal smoke. The whistle sounds great and WILL be on again.....
425 is flying Scotsman's sister confirmed because of it's 2 tenders. Manager:Victor! Kevin! we have another engine we need to fix.425:it's almost time for me to pull the polar express during December 24th.😳 Later...Victor:okay my friend your all fixed.😀
I Am speechless and you should be too but I will explain somehow and I will try.How does 425 have 4449's whistle it's like this:425 they want you as a new recruit. I'm looking at you southern pacificMake it happen
Nice video, alway's been a fan of the Reading, I grew up with the RR. My dad is a retired engineer from the Reading, 40yrs of service on the line.
Thank you!!
The whistle sounds like the whistles on 844, 611, 819, 614, and 1522. Great whistle and a great video, as well.

The old aux tender has a leak from what I have heard. It is now used to store water when the engine is serviced in Jim Thorpe.
