Reading & Northern OSJT: Full Chase of the Fall Foliage Express!

  • October 31, 2020 was a special day for the Reading and Northern railway. Hundreds of railfans gathered at every single spot along the line to capture the newly acquired EMD F units in charge of the Fall Foliage Express. The train left Reading Outer Station at 9 am, and continued on to Jim Thorpe, PA making several stops along the way. This was a unique opportunity for patrons to experience what it was like to travel by rail before the impending age of modernization. On the way back to Reading, the symbol of the train flipped from OSJT to JTOS. Around Nesquehoning, I decided to show the NRFF on its way to Pittston which came while we waited for JTOS to depart Jim Thorpe. All in all, there were seventeen shots of the train.

We code our train movements differently in Australia. For example, Journey Beyond Rail's "Great Southern" is coded 2TA8 on ARTC's CTC computers. 2=Monday, T=Taree NSW [first stop in NSW, although the train originated in Brisbane], A=Adelaide, 8=locomotive hauled passenger train. The "Great Southern" equipment, manufactured by the Budd Company in Red Lion PA, looks every the same as any of the Budd built passenger trains in North America. This train is usually 28- to 31-cars in length [including 2 HEP cars], hauled by 2 locomotives [NR-30, NR-31] painted in bright pumpkin colour with the train's logo on the side. Videos of this train may be located on RUclips.

I think I have also seen it with the black drivers the last time I visited. However, my question is where did they turn this train around? As it was leaving JT station, it headed on south, so is there a Wye located somewhere between JT and Lehighton? Most of the track along there is blocked from view. I do remember the track at Packerton where there was once a long warehouse type building along the track, that was torn down about a decade ago, but only a single track and not any switches, or turnouts.

That has been kept private I am still trying to find that out myself. All 4 units were indeed sold at the auction Andy Muller got these. NS got rid of them because they were racking up costs and they weren’t as powerful as the SD70mac they use now. They only need 1 loco for the OCS now.

The F units are from the Norfolk Southern Office Car Special fleet. NS had two A units and two B units. All four were upgraded to GP38-2 standards before running as power for the Office Car Special for several years. New management decided to sell them off in 2019 and put them up for action. Presumably BMR&N only had the money for the two at the time. The other two were sold to Aberdeen, Carolina & Western.
