Reading & Northern 2102: Return of the Iron Horse Rambles-May 28, 2022

  • On Saturday May 28, 2022, Reading & Northern operated their first Iron Horse Rambles excursions since 2102 was retired from active service in 1991. Throughout most of the northbound chase it rained, however, by the time it was time for the southbound trip, the weather cleared up.
2102 was decorated in an immaculate Rambles inspired scheme and is still equipped with a single-chime Reading hooter whistle along with a Reading 6-chime.
    RBMN 2102 History:
2102 was originally built as I10sa 2-8-0 no. 2044 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA in 1923. 2044 would be tasked with hauling freight trains throughout the Reading system. During World War II, the Reading Company needed stronger longer locomotives to handle all the wartime freight. Due to wartime restrictions, the railroad could not build a brand-new locomotive class from scratch, however, a loophole in the restrictions allowed them to rebuild 30 of their 45 I10sa 2-8-0s into T-1 4-8-4 locomotives. 2044 was rebuilt in 1945 at the Reading shops and would be renumbered to 2102.
Following its rebuild, 2102 operated freight trains until the late 1950s when it was placed into storage, but then was temporarily brought back into service in 1962 for the Reading Company's "Iron Horse Rambles". Following the conclusion of these excursions in 1964, 2102 was retired from service.
After a lengthy excursion mainline career from 1966-1984, 2102 was sold to Andrew Muller for use on his Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad. 2102 operated on the BM&R from 1985-1991. In early 2016, Reading & Northern announced that 2102 would be restored to operational condition, with her first official test run completed on April 6, 2022.

Love to see they started using the 6 chime again! Great footage you capture here, 2102 looks magnificent. Can't wait until 2100 is completed as well, and TWO Reading T-1s are in operation!

I had the honor of riding this train in the second car (third counting the generator car). Sticking my head out the window, the near deafening stack talk, the showers of ash, the smell of burning coal, and that oh so sweet 6 chime whistle all made for one hell of a ride that I will never forget and would more than gladly do again in a heartbeat. Old 2102's stellar performance made it quite clear that she's in damn good hands with the R&N. Hats off to them for making all of this happen.

Andy, you and your staff have done yourselves proud with this restoration.
Seeing her in Reading Rambles yellow paint on the footboards and handrails and the tasteful Reading & Northern lettering brought back a LOT of wonderful memories.
But, the icing on the cake was that Reading six-chime whistle put back on her. Thank you!
A great video East Penn Railfan Productions. Well done!

Thanks for the video. That’s a nice demonstration of the two whistles back to back beginning at 7:50. As a kid in the 1960s, I must have seen a couple of T-1 engines together when my parents took me to some rail event in Port Clinton. I remember how fearsome the whistles sounded there, close up against the mountains, and how massive the engines seemed. My parents had some pictures and videos from that day (now lost), but I think the engines had that same paint scheme if I recall the pictures correctly, the yellow trim standing out in my memory.

Great video. I was on this trip and I have to say this was one of the best experiences I've ever had of riding behind steam. I recommend anyone who loves steam has to take a trip behind the Rambler.

Bigger! Especially when Andy Muller put 2102 to the test by pulling 50 empty coal hoppers on April 26th. ruclips.net/video/OkqMuOPYhOg/видео.html but then 100 coal hoppers on May 20th then pulling 50 loaded coal hoppers back but with 2102 in reverse! ruclips.net/video/kzKt-2MsqmI/видео.html

I am glad to see that Reading locomotive 2102 has been restored and returned back to operation after decades of being inactive, there are four surviving Reading T1 class 4-8-4 locomotives and soon two of these will be operational first 2102 and later engine 2100. It is great to see steam locomotives be restored back into operating condition after being inactive for decades and left to rust away through years of neglect.

Fun fact: The observation car on the rear of this consist is a former Illinois Central car by the name “Mardi Gras”, and it’s most well known for being the Tuscan red observation car that brought up the rear of many a Norfolk Southern Steam Program excursion. Another fun fact is that this is also the first time it has ever run behind a 4-8-4 since it last ran behind the 611 in 1994.

Did Andy buy the former PRR budd car and the Great Dome behind the Super Dome? I have been seeing these behind 2102 since it has been restored during the test runs etc, these cars used to be part of PAX rail at one point for mainline excursion leasing. I think 425 pulled it as well before the restoration of 2102 was finished.
