James does in fact sound sick here. I've heard him live at other shows during this year and he sounds much more nasal here like his nose is stuffed. I would definitely believe he was sick here which is why he sounds the way he does here.

What you thought you heard at the end was some feeble sweep picking from the Petruccinator 1000, but actually, he condensed the entire song down into 12 seconds, played at 50x fast forward. I've heard he can play it at 5000x speed but he doesn't because people die from cranial implosions.

James is a good Singer. But age does what it does to the voice. Take the songs down a key/pitch and problem solved.
why are all the tracks faster? is not the JL vocals problem.... because he needs the corret time for hes vibratos, only the drums can beat this, some parts of the track he need to slowdown, have the feeling

Is it me? or anyone else feel that Petrucci's finger movements not syncing with the solo. It could be the delay on camera maybe.

Definitely playback. Most of the solos on their albums are recorded by guest musicians like Kirk Hammett or Kerry King. And even if Petrucci himself is barely able to play that fast, he is doing a great job giving the impression, though. Kudos to John!

as much as mangini sounds like a midi track. i will commend him for keeping tempo like a boss. I absolutely love portnoy and would prefer him over mangini but sometimes he loses tempo a bit in his live performances and I'm nowhere near as good as him but it always kinda irks me a little.
Hanz Schulenburg Couldn't agree more. I've always been a MP's fan from the very first day. Thinking in it from the band's perspective, it may be way more confortable for them to perform tempowise with MM. Both are brilliant.
James is doing is job. It's a live uncut performance and of course, exposing the band to criticism. But believe me, they sound amazing on that PA system. And we must not forget: It's R&R

Wrong, you can't here it the way it sounds live. The micing for his cymbals weren't the greatest either. Whole sound is pretty compressed as expected on live captures

Shouldn't Jordan Rudess have his hands on the keyboard playing the intro to this song? It's almost like the video for Jump by Van Halen. Magic keyboards. Now I know they can sequence, but for a live show, I think it's best to "perform".

+loraljohnson I asked john about it during a clinic thing a while ago, and he laughed and said "yeah we do that so we dont lose the timing", he then elaborated the song itself isn't an issue, but he said the intro was really easy to rush or drag causing the whole tempo to skew and trying to "Correct it" live was difficult without sounding sloppy, so they just play the intro as a sequence.
And that's coming from the horse's mouth.
+loraljohnson It's been like this from the very beginning. First time I saw them live in 1993, it was the Images & Words tour, Metropolis was the opening song and the intro was taken from the original studio recording, maybe as a "dramatic" intro before the band actually started to play. I suppose it's stuck because they kept doing it ever since.
The thing is they can't just downtune this song by a half tone because it will sound horrible and everyone will notice it. It sounds like he is yowling from the back of his throat every time, painful to listen to.
Really sucks because the band is so on point but LaBrie can't do it as well anymore
He's still good for his age. But he's not young anymore and the band should adjust their music accordingly.

Seriously, what's going on with this band? Since Portnoy have left the group, they seem to be getting worse and worse. New albums suck, Petrucci misses notes, not even mentioning LaBrie...
as portnoy left, the rest of the band is also getting older and older... look how old LaBrie now really is, compared to when this song was released
Bartekdex Mike Portnoy might have been an ass but he ran a tight ship. These guys aren’t that old - The guys in Maiden are over 10 years older and everyone is mostly on point. Let’s call a spade a spade. This is not good.
This is also a highly compressed live capture. Common sense tells you this is not how they sound there in person. Most live captures sound nothing like it does in person lol. Labrie sounds alot fuller, drum and bass sound absolutely thunderous, great sustain on the drums.
