I have sympathy for him, I really do but I think legally he is on a thin ice, as an OCI cardholder there are certain restrictions and he has violated those. American and UK have stricter guidelines and thousands of common people are denied visas, GC and citizenship for simple mistakes on their applications.So saying his mom filed the application long back and he doesn't have a relationship with his dad all these things don't matter because in hindsight he could have disclosed all of it in all these years while enjoying his privilege. Tarik Fateah for example is pakistani by decent but a Canadian citizen and loved by many in India, he has been critical of Indian govt many times but along with it also of pakistan and canada where he lives now, so when he criticizes India most people take it as constructive criticism. RUclips is filled with 100s of such people who people from my generation follow for a true unbiased view of the world. The current Govt. will do everything in it's power to disallow disingenuous people to freely travel in and out of India be it missionaries using tourist visa for proselytizing tribals (or by your definition Hindu nationalist govt. cracking down on religions freedom of minorities) , companies like aveda mining information from rural india for next billion dollar herbal product while patenting the raw material (Or a NYT article on India's bad track record on ensuring intellectual property rights ), NGOs funded by international agencies that undermine Indian democracy or journalists that weild power from the idea that everything bad happening to them is essentially a retaliation against them for "speaking up". The list is very long and you sir pretty much fall in the category of someone who wound write the articles with headlines i mentioned in brackets above! Off course government has taken this step because you ruffled some feathers high up, in most cases they would have looked the other way (which they actually did all these years while you had your OCI) but then they figured that legally you shouldn't have had the OCI at the first place. The rule is clear "OCI is not granted to any citizen who is / was and / or if their parents, grandparents or great grandparents are / were citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh or such other country as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify, shall be eligible for registration as Overseas Citizen of India cardholder" Ref: www.indianembassyusa.gov.in/pages?id=3&subid=50 2. Was his mother in her rights to not disclose who the father was on the application. While your reference is for children who were conceived out of wedlock who don't have a father, the law i think now also extend to divorced parents and other situations aswell. I am unaware of his mother's situation but it still doesn't change the fact that the author wasn't eligible for an OCI. Your point if correct only exonerates his mother of wrongdoing by withholding information. As far as I know the government isn't filling a case on her. 3. What you can and cannot do on OCI card. An OCI card holder is not automatically entitled to undertake any Journalistic, Filming of Documentary, Missionary, Mountaineering and Research work in India. They need prior approval from the concerned Department/Ministry of the Government of India for these. He is a journalist and I am pretty sure he hasn't taken prior approval from the GOI for it. So now there are two very strong reason for the revocation of his OCI. Lastly, 4. There's no clause that says even if one of your parent is Pakistani but if you do not have any emotional attachment to him or her then you can claim OIC. If one of your parent is Pakistan citizen then you can't be a citizen of India or claim OIC.

Wrong... blacklists exist for all kinds of visas. They can send you back to your country once you arrive at an Indian airport. I've been threatened refusal on two separate occasions because I once spent time Pakistan. This only began under the BJP government.

All said and done, it is a fact that Mr. Taseer didn't not mention in his application for OCI that his biological father is a Pakistani. This is a serious lapse. This amounts to not only suppression of facts, but also mentioning the same would have deprived him of OCI status. He can't take refuge under the fact of mentioning the same in his various writings. He shouldn't nor anyone else expect the scrutiniser to refer to his writings. That Mr. Taseer castigating PM Modi as 'Divider in Chief' being the trigger for Govt.'s action on him can't obliterate his lapse. If you have objection with that you should contact Indian govt. To change the policy. Here in this particular case, Atish had lied and violated law to get OCI and Indian govt. But he should know that the rules on OCI are much stricter as compared to the old PIO card; I have seen several white British citizens obtaining the PIO card - I even checked one of them out of curiosity at the Indian High Commission back in 2007.

This is vendetta politics at its Ugliest. Aatish Taseer wrote a very accurate article for TIME Magazine, earlier this year on the Modi Govt in India. It was unflattering as it exposed the rogues for what they are. In revenge mode the Govt cited an anomaly & asked him to surrender his OCI Card. Taseer is also the son on Journalist Tavleen Singh who until recently was a very vocal & strong supporter of this regime in India. I have sympathy for him, I really do but I think legally he is on a thin ice, as an OCI cardholder there are certain restrictions and he has violated those. American and UK have stricter guidelines and thousands of common people are denied visas, GC and citizenship for simple mistakes on their applications.So saying his mom filed the application long back and he doesn't have a relationship with his dad all these things don't matter because in hindsight he could have disclosed all of it in all these years while enjoying his privilege.
Tarik Fateah for example is pakistani by decent but a Canadian citizen and loved by many in India, he has been critical of Indian govt many times but along with it also of pakistan and canada where he lives now, so when he criticizes India most people take it as constructive criticism. Off course government has taken this step because you ruffled some feathers high up, in most cases they would have looked the other way (which they actually did all these years while you had your OCI) but then they figured that legally you shouldn't have had the OCI at the first place. But, having said that he should definitely file for exemption and petition the government to consider a visitor visa. I sincerely hope you do get it.

2. Was his mother in her rights to not disclose who the father was on the application.
While your reference is for children who were conceived out of wedlock who don't have a father, the law i think now also extend to divorced parents and other situations aswell. I am unaware of his mother's situation but it still doesn't change the fact that the author wasn't eligible for an OCI. Your point if correct only exonerates his mother of wrongdoing by withholding information. As far as I know the government isn't filling a case on her.
3. What you can and cannot do on OCI card.
An OCI card holder is not automatically entitled to undertake any Journalistic, Filming of Documentary, Missionary, Mountaineering and Research work in India. They need prior approval from the concerned Department/Ministry of the Government of India for these.
He is a journalist and I am pretty sure he hasn't taken prior approval from the GOI for it. So now there are two very strong reason for the revocation of his OCI.

There's no clause that says even if one of your parent is Pakistani but if you do not have any emotional attachment to him or her then you can claim OIC. If one of your parent is Pakistan citizen then you can't be a citizen of India or claim OIC.

This amounts to not only suppression of facts, but also mentioning the same would have deprived him of OCI status. He can't take refuge under the fact of mentioning the same in his various writings. He shouldn't nor anyone else expect the scrutiniser to refer to his writings. That Mr. Taseer castigating PM Modi as 'Divider in Chief' being the trigger for Govt.'s action on him can't obliterate his lapse. Anyone who apply for OCI, obviously they are citizenship of any Xxx country but not India. That means the candidate has a accepted citizenship at any other country. If you have objection with that you should contact Indian govt. To change the policy.

Every country has laws and rules, every citizen even the first citizen has to follow it, you got yourself entangled in it which is a sorry state of affairs, now best thing for you would be to take it up legally and probably find a better solution. Please don't make yourself a Modi hater who is loved and revered in India, it is not turkey you are looking at it from far and not from inside. This country is going in the right direction and most citizens are of this belief, you have all the right to criticise the government but with facts and figures not by rhetoric and making it a personal fight with Modi, I would still like to believe that you've not understood the pm and the man he is and probably will take a while, so it's better take a step back relax try and understand the whole situation again with logic,rationale and facts and then conclude your opinion and maybe you'll see the light otherwise best of luck for your American citizenship

This is vendetta politics at its Ugliest. Aatish Taseer wrote a very accurate article for TIME Magazine, earlier this year on the Modi Govt in India. It was unflattering as it exposed the rogues for what they are. In revenge mode the Govt cited an anomaly & asked him to surrender his OCI Card. Taseer is also the son on Journalist Tavleen Singh who until recently was a very vocal & strong supporter of this regime in India. He is being victimized which is abhorrent & speaks very lowly of India as a country to allow this to happen on the whim of a Rabid Regime.
If you do not disclose some facts, while applying for a US visa, and are denied a visa, will you cry and make such a fuss?
