Let me explain the situation like this. Korea's parliament is currently majority in opposition. Main opposition party: (Korean Democrats) President's party: (Korean rightists) And the opposition wanted a special prosecutor to investigate the president's corruption and this was passed by the parliament many times but the president vetoed it every time. This conflict has been going on for months.
Honestly, from an apolitical view on the situation, the head of state and by extension, the head of the executive wields the authority to declare martial law and carry it out too. Meaning, neither the police nor military has any political say, they are and honestly should remain as mere instruments of political action. Really, the only thing that's left is to argue the constitutionality behind its declaration, being that parliament is being blocked from voting to overrule said authority, and in which case we just hope that the military and police recognises that this constitutional issue forfeits his legitimacy. So, in fact, it's about to what extent those forces are radicalised for him to succeed. Like, it could be a matter of time that so long as communications are online, for low-ranking officers to consider the situation and splinter from his authority.
The idea that "the opposition supports North Korea" is absurd and, even if true, doesn't warrant martial law. There's no North Korean forces invading the country. This guy will get cooked.

I’m south korean. there had been rumors that president Yoon would declare martial law on armed forces day (October 1st). When this was mentioned in the national assembly, the presidential office immediately protested, and the controversy quickly subsided. Considering south Koreas political climate, it’s quite rare for the national assembly to comply so readily with the president’s stance. In this martial law declaration, the president stated his intent to “eradicate” anti-state and pro-North Korea forces all at once. It seems likely that this is part of something he has been preparing for a while. We’ll probably find out the details when morning comes (it’s 1:00 AM here).
