🇹🇹 🇹🇹 🇹🇹 I'm happy bcuz some of my American born cousins + myself born in Quebec are embracing our Caribbean heritage more now as adults/grown folk...even my American cousins who kind of put it on the back burner and weren't that interested in their heritage as teens have come round to it later on and did dna tests and all that. For myself tho, I've actually lived in Caribbean w' my grandmother and go back to the islands often to visit + not just for for carnival season lol. I've gone during the the non-carnival seasons (xmas, summer, fall). Can't speak on the other islands but in T&T 🇹🇹 specifically, the vibe is totally different when it's not carnival season. My fam even told me to not be fooled by carnival season because people in Trinbago can be quite conservative + not everyone actually enjoys mas, fetes or taking part in the festivities. The conservative factors can be summed up for a number of reasons: religion/christianity/upbringing/family values/ "british + european" colonialism: not exposing too much skin/class/economics etc. Trini's and Jamaicans these days keep up w' a lot of North American trends (US/Canada) you can kind of see in infrastructure, consumer goods, food and even parties but in the past both nations were very much European or more so took on influences from europe and the old europeans influences can be seen in many facets of their past ways of life as well as the modern ways. I recently learned about the time period that American companies influenced + opened flour mills on the island, in previous times, Trinbagonians were not consuming so much flour and had/consumed more abundant gluten-free options.....
Speaking as a black Jamaican, I hope the so called Foundational Black Americans (FBA) took some serious notes from this video. The lineage of Jamaicans and Caribbean black people have been instrumental in helping to shape the cultural and political landscape of America since the beginning of modern time. Instead of trying to delineate yourselves from Caribbean immigrants, perhaps Black Americans should just recognize and appreciate our long list of contributions to this Great Country. Afterall, we are the same race of enslaved people who originally were brought to the Americas on slave ships. When Black Caribbean people succeed in America Black Americans also succeed and vice versa. Just saying!
You lost us at “so called Foundational Black Americans”. Black Americans are, and have always been the blueprint. Everyone knows this, including the lady that posted this video, being as ALL of her content is about Black Americans lol. Nonetheless, shout out to our family across the diaspora.
