Im 40 I have texture and fine lines. When I use concealer under my eyes I do what Robert says here first and make sure the area is well hydrated. I use a primer a really small amount, put concealer where I want not a ton just the amount I need for coverage, I spray my sponge with setting spray put a small amount of foundation on the back of my hand dip my sponge into the tiny amount of foundation and then blend the concealer. After that's all dry I use a small brush and use a very small amount of powder. It works wonders for me.
I have very little space on my eyelids so I use nail brushes to put my eyeliner (as a very thin line on the whole eyeline or if I feel that I want a cat eye I start it in the middle of the eyeline and it is getting thicker towards the end of the eye).
Don’t know what it is but every time I start one of your videos my cat (Akasha-Queen of the damned) hops up right next to me and has to be right there with you. Maybe it’s your voice. Whatever it is she loves you!!
Robert is my Bill Nye of makeup. I love him because he is one of very few that teach the strategy, the method, the science behind makeup. I am all about hearing the rationale of products. I would love love love for Robert to do a video solely centered around very dry skinned individuals, like myself. I want to know, if I were a client in your chair, how you would approach skin prep and makeup that caters to my dry skin. I appreciate you and your videos!
Another very good primer for uneven oily skin is the Laura Mercier blurring primer. It smooths the texture without making it doll-like, and controls oils pretty well without dehydrating the skin. Some other hacks I use for oily skin: 1) Powder before and after the foundation. The powder underneath works like a shield. It will absorb the oil before it reaches the foundation. 2) Use different powders on your face. I use lightweight, light reflecting powders under my eyes and above my lips, rice powder on my oiliest areas (this is often my under the foundation powder, as it is white and visible) and my all-round favourite powder all over (usually Laura transluicent or Nikkia Joy). Adjust your powders to the needs of your skin. 3) Treat sun protection as skin prep. Get a rich, creamy sunblock if your skin is dry, or a leightweight one if you're oily. My oily skin likes Canmake Mermaid, Etude House Sunprise Airy Finish and LRP Anthelios XL sunscreens. Skip moisturiser in the morning, instead use hydrating mist or toner and an eye cream (i.e. any cream under the eyes) and sunscreen all over. 4) If you do your makeup some time after you put on your skin care, use a blotting paper before starting your makeup. This way the oils that are already out won't contribute to shortened longevity of your makeup. 5) Do not overkill your sebum. If you put setting spray underneath, mattifyning primer, rice powder, foundation, powder and setting spray again, you risk getting the adverse effect: surface dehydration and tons of sebum that tries to counteract this dryness. It is neither pleasant nor looks good. Better use less and blot twice or thrice during the day than put too much at the beginning. 6) Control your oils with long-term skincare rather than makeup. Use clay and algae masks, incorporate niacinamide, BHA and retinol in your routine, hydrate (water creams for the win!). Keep the oils balanced.
You scienced the hell out of that primer demo! 🤓 You would be a much better teacher than you probably think. Being able to present concepts in a practical way others can understand is visa-commercial-priceless. 💜🖤💜🤓
Your under eye tip of a bitty bitty bit of oil or eye cream tapped under the eye is spot on. I take a smidgey smidge smidge of Eucerin Original Healing Cream on and tap it on under the eye AFTER my concealer. A very little bit because I am don't want to take any coverage away and that helps a lot with my older skin.
I need to find a Robert who has really dry skin and can tell me what to do and buy! I only trust Robert and I be waiting for him to be like so on dry skin for example... and then he doesn't 😭😭
Yeah same! I really wish he gave more pro tips for those of us who are lacking sebum! I actually did a marketing focus group for a japanese company that was launching the states (no idea which it was) where they used an instrument to measure sebum levels in different parts of your face. My forehead was a big fat zero
There seem to be so many variables considering skin type (dry oily combination etc) and whether someone has smoother or bigger pores (not to mention tones undertones etc). It gives a whole new respect to makeup artists being able to create flawless works on variable peoples skin. Pretty neat. Thanks for your work and energy sharing with others❤

Just what a needed today more content from you Robert. Thank you so much for your content and helping a 48 year old to change my eye make up. Without looking a mess. Also you fun personality makes my day xxxxxx
My trick to lessen creasing under the eye is to apply the soon to be discontinued Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector in a very thin layer with a brush that I mist with MAC Fix+ prior to my tiny amount of concealer. It helps to keep my under eye fresh all day.
This was sooo soooo helpful for my combo skin. Thank you for explaining why it’s more important to prep your skin rather than set when you have oily skin, you really helped me understand Robert 😊💖
I have been using the dew drops since December when they came out. They do look really good but I found it better to use them on the cheek bone area more than the tzone area. They can make you break out in the tzone, I learned that in December.
I’d like to request a video about how you organize your brushes. Super random I know but between face brushes, eye brushes, brushes for powder, brushes for creams, favorite brushes, clean brushes and dirty brushes my makeup table is a disorganized disaster! Love you so much Robert! ❤️ Please and thank you!!!! 🖤🖤🖤

My favorite hack for my SUPER OILY eyelids is double-priming. In order to get my eyeshadow to stay all day - I'm talking like 15/16 hours or more, I use a thin layer of Urban Decay Anti-Aging Priner Potion followed by a thin layer of Gerard Cosmetics Clean Slate (or, MAC Paint Pot until it's all used up). Has been life-changing for me!
Robert, would love it if you could do a video for those of us over 55. I've always tried to take good care of my skin, but things change after 40. Thanks so much!
Hi Robert! Could you teach us on how normal makeup texture should look like? I know that it is normal for us to see texture in makeup, but it’s hard to tell when something is cakey. I can’t decide if it’s just normal texture or it’s cakey. Thank you!!!❤️
I believe dimethicone is the ingredient in your gel based eye creams that is smoothing. It's in tatcha's silk canvas and the elf poreless primer as well. I really like gel moisturisers for the same reason, and you can also use gel moistuisers as a primer for the skin exactly the same way you use the tatcha primer. Neutrogena hydroboost is one of my favourites as it's inexpensice. Estee Lauder day wear moisturiser is another one with a ton of dimethicone in it.
Since foundation doesn't want to stay on my nose, I make sure to moisturize well, apply a tiny amount of eye primer to it, and use concealer for coverage instead of relying on my foundation and it stays all day.
I think a gel based eye cream is working because it’s sorta a hybrid, cream/gel cream helps plump and hydrate, gel helps make a “film” or barrier that makes a more even surface and grips at the makeup. Also, since you said you’re only using a very thin layer, the cream part will absorb and not contribute to oil that makes the makeup slip and break down.
Im sorry for so many comments but I love the elf mintmelt primer. I bought 5 because it does say they are limited edition. You can't find them as easy as you could, so you are right for sticking up.
@@isthatjackson not at all, it actually feels cooling and its just like the milk hydrogrip which is clise to 50.00. You may want to get the elf while you can. It is limited edition. I love it!
Before I started watching your videos, it would take me FOREVER to prep my skin. I was always using so many products because that's what I would see the "gurus" doing. Everything after my moisturizer was like a spray or an oil or an essence or a damn spray water and a primer and this and that. It was so much work and I didn't fully understand why I was doing any of it lol Now, thanks to you, I know where I need to prep and why and with what. My skin is normal but sensitive so all of those products would irritate me eventually. I found out what I needed was just 2 primers at most for different areas and most of the time, I can get away with just using a moisturizer and eyeshadow primer. So THANK YOU! My routine is less hassle, I'm not wasting products and I'm especially not wasting money buying things I don't need or won't work because some RUclipsr that likes makeup has an affiliate link for it. I love to watch the oldest video always & neither to say it made my end of the day. Happy to hear you a British makeup artist. Can I be your model pretty pleaseee, it would boost up my self confidence & the whole package 😊
Love love LOVE your videos and the level of knowledge you share. TYSM 🖤 The reason why a gel cream works IMO is because it replenishes your skin with hydration that we lose as a result of a natural process called - TEWL (or Trans Epidermal Water Loss) which is happening at the dermis layer of your skin. In some parts of your face, the skin barrier is strong so it can hold onto the hydration better so you're not not flaking/ generating too much oil absolutely everywhere. Now this loss of hydration can result in either dry patch/ flakiness (for my dry skin beauties as their skin pores are tiny and cannot generate as much natural oil) OR in too much oil coming through to the skin surface (for my oily skin beauties as they have large pores and skin is trying to nourish itself by producing more oil to replace water loss) BUT both are caused by the same issue - lack of hydration. Gel based creams are water-based (i.e. first ingredient is water in them) so the skin absorbs it quickly, replenishes itself and it prevents flaking/ too much oil generation. So your skin is nourished and make-up stays longer. 🥰 I should mention that I'm no skin expert. This info is just based on my own research, watching a lot of skincare videos (Hi James! 😉) and listening to the dermatologist on YT. Much love xx
I love that Robert recommends so many drugstore products! So many "influencers" are always recommending the more high end or luxury brands. I like that Robert has a good mix, or even will recommend a more expensive brand and then a drugstore alternative.
I find Eye creams perfect for the under eye area and around the nose and chin if you have dry and hyper pigmented skin (like me)! Very glad that you recommended it
I really like the CeraVe cream as a primer especially if there’s texture(not the pump lotion but the thicker cream) it has the smoothest barrier/primer texture when a small amount is used and worked in.
I would love to see how you’d do my makeup. I’ve been to so many professional (and really good) artists and none of them have ever been able to succeed on my skin. My skin looks normal, but as someone with eczema and psoriasis I can’t use a single powder without drenching my face in setting spray 😅 I’ve thankfully mastered the art of my skin and loooove the finish I can achieve

Yess!! 💜 Cerave eye cream for sensitive dry eyes is the best cheap drugstore option 👁️
Cerave is the best! 💪🏽✌👍
I just spent 2 hours watching James‘ videos so this feels like the universe telling me to keep procrastinating and tbh I agree ✨
Lol! Me too haha
At this point I watch your videos just to hear your voice. It's so smoothing.
And he’s ever so handsome 😏
@@74griffo I know right! He's good to look at as well!!!
I have no interest in makeup (well not until now) and just like his voice and charisma
Ok so you will probably never see this but I had stopped watching MUA (besides Wayne Goss) because there was too much drama, too much swearing, too much “see my free stuff I get sent”, too much listen to my drama, too much everything. I started watching yours on random FB video and I just want to say I appreciate your no nonsense, no drama, no hate filled approach. I love that you can dislike something and not trash it or if you do like something, you’re clear about why you like it and how to use it to its fullest potential. I appreciate that you don’t swear much and I don’t feel like I have to lower the volume around my kids. I feel the same way about your brother too. You both have created a refreshing RUclips channel. Thank you!
I have really dry skin and I love using a hydrating mist while buffing out my foundation to help it not look so cakey
Which mist do you like?

@@specialkate374 thank you! 💜
I always do a triangle at the end of my eye when I do Cat eye and then just drag the line down to just a little over half way
hooded eye gang for the win🤩
Robert explains this topic so well, I even notice in his eyes and facial expressions with virtually every subtle nuance of emotion there is.
Don’t know what it is but every time I start one of your videos my cat (Akasha-Queen of the damned) hops up right next to me and has to be right there with you. Maybe it’s your voice. Whatever it is she loves you!!
omg same with my cat!! Robert do you have something to confess? TuT
That Cuffing earring is Everything!!! I'm such a ear piercing person 😮💨🥰💞

uh, yeah, exactly what the O.P. said
Creating a framed quote of "Not when my oils get involved!" Lol. It seriously can ruin your whole day and cancel all plans 😂
Another very good primer for uneven oily skin is the Laura Mercier blurring primer. It smooths the texture without making it doll-like, and controls oils pretty well without dehydrating the skin.
Some other hacks I use for oily skin:
1) Powder before and after the foundation.
Mandatory algorithm-boosting comment! Thank you for all tips Robert 💙💙
@@joannablack Thats really cool! I am pretty sure mine would be in the negative lol.
My reptilian, peeling, dry skin would probably be the same too! 🐍
I LOVE his scar in the eyebrow!!!! 👀🖤🖤🖤
the bobbi brown eye base has really helped stop my undereyes looking dry when applying concealer x
Helloooo Robert! Fancy seeing you here on this gloomy, cloudy, cold Spring Day!
Robert is the only person I trust with advice.
When you say the “Hi I’m Robert...” part in your videos you sound like a flight attendant explaining the safety precautions of the flight 😂
It’s kind of comforting haha
Most on point comment. I feel instantly soothed when "hi I'm Robert" plays
I would love a tour of your jewellery-collection. Everything looks so great and unconventional.
My make up ALWAYS cracks into my smile lines, it makes me look old and cakey even when I’ve barely got any make up on :( please could you do a video on how to stop this? 🙏🏻💗
Pore filling primer! Pat it on!
The best teacher ever! I swear I learn at least one thing every time!

Oh, no!! Good luck at the ER!
Hope all is well!
Good luck!! Get well soon!
Omg thats crazy! Good luck
Oh no! Good luck, hopefully you have a speedy recovery.
The Glow Recipe Watermelon serum is EVERYTHING. I love their products so much
I have been using the dew drops since December when they came out.
I am here with my cup of tea ready for your advice lol plus uploaded my video earlier than normal so I could be here lol xx

Still going strong!! (for no reason)
I have a wee giggle every time I see your comment in these, love Jaime
Yes!
What is the tiny hand challenge?
@@DanielleNicoleMakeup if I’m correct I’m pretty sure it’s that he does his makeup with tiny plastic hands instead of his regular hands. There are some MUAs that have done it if you wanna look up some videos and it’s fucking hilarious tbh
@@jordanh6123 oooooh. That does sound hilarious! 🤣 TY for clarification 🥰
When you said niacinamide I literally said "You did it!!" 😂💜
Thanks to you Robert, I no longer use an orange colour corrector under my eyes and my concealer looks so much better!!!!

Thanks so much!
STOP SCROLLING AND PAY ATTENTION TO OUR KINGGGGGGGGGG!
Hi Robert! Could you teach us on how normal makeup texture should look like? I know that it is normal for us to see texture in makeup, but it’s hard to tell when something is cakey. I can’t decide if it’s just normal texture or it’s cakey. Thank you!!!❤️
Eye cream for the nose. I would never have thought of that, I love it 🤩
I believe dimethicone is the ingredient in your gel based eye creams that is smoothing.
I really really appreciate the captions! As someone who is hard of hearing it’s really great!
Im sorry for so many comments but I love the elf mintmelt primer. I bought 5 because it does say they are limited edition. You can't find them as easy as you could, so you are right for sticking up.
Do you find it irritating to your skin at all?
Thank you. Great informative video!
The whole under eye section was so interesting. I have lines and I have always found the foundation just doesn’t sit right and then you powder and Then gah! Going to try this and see what happens. I am learning so much from your channel. Went through phase of not bothering with make up for ages and now you have got me really interested again. Trying new things and just having fun with it. Thank you ☺️
I'm watching this video because I used mac fix plus as a primer before my foundation (tinted moisturizer) and my make up has never looked better. Very exciting.
Very happy you listed some products for dry skin🥰
I tap a very small amount of Honest Beauty Balm under my eyes to help keep my concealer from creasing during the day. Saw this tip on one of Jessica Alba’s ASMR makeup videos. 😁 I have dry skin so any type of hydration tips are great for me
I love to watch the oldest video always & neither to say it made my end of the day. Happy to hear you a British makeup artist. Can I be your model pretty pleaseee, it would boost up my self confidence & the whole package 😊
Your videos are so clean from start to finish.
I should mention that I'm no skin expert.
Very glad that you recommended it
I really liked Robert’s jewelry today, especially the one in his right palm.❤️❤️
The by terry primer is one of the best. I always return to this one. + Embryolisse lait creme concentrée before.. amazing result 👏👏
What I really like to put on before my foundation is the Sport fix spray by Revolution beauty. It really helps with the excess of oil.
Ok- but your fashion sense is amazing
I really like the CeraVe cream as a primer especially if there’s texture(not the pump lotion but the thicker cream) it has the smoothest barrier/primer texture when a small amount is used and worked in.
I would love to see how you’d do my makeup. I’ve been to so many professional (and really good) artists and none of them have ever been able to succeed on my skin. My skin looks normal, but as someone with eczema and psoriasis I can’t use a single powder without drenching my face in setting spray 😅
I’ve thankfully mastered the art of my skin and loooove the finish I can achieve
