The tarte shape tape was mainly overhyped because the company organized many luxurious trips for the influencers - they got free five star vacations and gifts for promoting a concealer.
Thank you for this!! I've been searching for my shade in concealers and something that sits with my horrible dark circles and lines. I've tried MAC and this was the next product lime I was going to try 😅😅
For what it's worth, the new creamy formula is a lot better, much more hydrating (more like it's less drying). @@469ka37 - Lmao, poor Tarte just can't win. 😂 But seriously, this just goes to show that not every product will work for every person. The new formula still creases a bit on my oily skin and isn't my favorite concealer, but I still find it light-years ahead of the original. I hope you've been able to find a concealer that _does_ work for you.
The difference between Robert’s concealer and when he applied more to do it like everyone else’s, was unreal! His looked SOOO MUCH BETTER!! I swear to you that Robert is the reason that youtubers are doing the inner corner and outer corner of the eye and that’s IT! He thankfully and single handedly killed the triangle concealer lol!
I swear I was just talking about this! He was the FIRST person on youtube I saw do it, I also started it after seeing him. I only see people do it this way now!
Robert, your background is EVERYTHING. Honestly the overhyped makeup products make me want to release a how a *normal* person applies those products. Because some of them aren’t bad, but they aren’t worth the hype and the technique some influencers use... Painting on a foundation, huge triangles of concealer? Come on. It won’t look good.
Lol exactly, but part of why they apply it the way they do is bcuz of their lighting and it does look good on camera, but I wish they’d say that bcuz so many people watch it and turn around and do the same thing and think they must be doing something wrong.
Alexandra Anele is a rare one that films her videos for actually wearable make-up and explains/ finds out for herself what works and what not. But her background is not as nice as Roberts new one! 😁
@@misssunnydee I saw in some of his comment sections that he posted to another form of social media saying he's taking a break and is okay, Twitter or something idk
The Tarte Shape Shape was supposed to be a “contouring concealer”, it wasn’t made for the under eye, how do I know this? I was trained by Tarte for two hours on it before it launched and half that training was then saying “this is NOT an under eye concealer”, it sucks as a contouring concealer too... so it’s trash overall 😂
I found that shape tape was too dry for me (and I couldn't find my shade). I'm currently using the Tarte Creasless Concealer. It's a lot more hydrating than shape tape and has a thinner consistency. Much better for under eyes.
I think the main issue I always have is how much face makeup influencers put on. They CAKE on concealer, bronzer, contour, etc. And in beauty lights, it looks lovely. But on real people in real life-it’s a mess
Yesssss. It looks so bad because some of it is literally drag makeup (all those heavy techniques started in drag). Looks great on stage or on camera but a bit scary irl.
Thank you god finally someone said it! And I cant believe most people actually fall for that! And then they complain why doesnt it look good on them like umm come on... Common sense 🤦🏻♀️
@@feardadani The other reason why looks copied by beauty influencers don’t look good on everyone is because not everyone possesses the same facial features. The makeup influencers know how to put makeup on themselves, but that doesn’t mean that the exact same technique looks good on us. Also, keep in mind that makeup companies encourage us to put on layers of products because then we’d run out faster and have to buy more products. In the end, it’s all about making a sale.
Omg!! YES!! when I started really watching makeup tutorials, I went to a party w/ such a "full face" and I was "melting" all over the place and so uncomfortable, I left the party early! Robert has really taught me to wear LESS!! So much better!
White, navy blue, cherey red and gold. Tangerine, cyan, rust red, emmerald green. Grape purple, earthy brown, turqoise and deep green. They could've literally picked a color from each of the scouts and make a gorgeous colorful palette!

Morphe as a whole. I remember when influencers were pushing a specific highlighter brush, I bought it and it felt like rubbing a steel brush on my face
Really? Lol I thought brushes was one thing Morphe did well. I've never tried them, but I remember people, not just influencers saying their brushes were "great quality for the price".
@@MaynardsSpaceship I've tried them because I bought into the hype. Spent like £50 on a whole collection or maybe two. Threw them all away, think I've only got a lash brush left lmao. Waste of money. It sheds loads, it's super scratchy. Invest in expensive Brushes with cheap makeup. Because Brushes really make a difference.
I think the greatest problem with shape tape is that it came out in the middle of the triangle concealer craze. We're finally moving into a decent amount of concealer, so maybe in a moderate amount it works well. I remember watching every youtube person do the triangle and contouring with shape tape. It might look nice with a small amount
Oh I tried the littlest amount. I used the search bar for why my concealer doesn’t work like a RUclipsr and found Raw Beauty Kristi. I ended up moving on to Toofaced concealer and it was way better for me. I’ve moved on since then but man, that was a time. Tarte Shape Tape never was my friend.
@@tammystiletto Interesting, maybe it only works for certain skin types? I have dry skin and I absolutely love it because it gives me full coverage without emphasizing lines and texture.
Daniela- I agree with you. I only use a small amount of the Shape Tape, and I HAVE to blend it lightly with a damp beauty sponge. I tried using my fingers to blend, and also a brush, and it looked horrible. People forget that using the right technique and the right tools is key!! Also, not every makeup formula is suited for every skin type.
Shape tape works best when only a few dots applied to each eye and using a DAMP sponge (even tarte says the damp sponge method is the best way to apply it) X
When Robert says "if this is your first time here....". I'm always immediately jealous of those guys. Imagine finding Robert all over again and being able to binge all the content for the first time. 🖤

i love the Sailor Moon palette, and i actually love the exact thing you criticized it for lmao i never use the dark shades that brands put into palettes, they never look good on me so they just sit there untouched 😭 with this palette i'm actually able to use all of the shades and have fun creating my favorite looks
The Sailor Moon palette is honestly my favorite eye shadow palette I own. The reason I love it is that I I like to do really simple halo eye looks and I feel like the color story works perfectly for me. It's definitely not something I'd use for more intricate looks. But I think it's a great beginner palette for more simple looks.
I swear disliking overhyped things has to be some sort of personality trait because I lose ALL motivation to watch something when so many people go crazy over it and I have no valid reason as to why 💀
if it's gone viral on tik tok, i don't want it. i don't get it because people will literally use it in a video and give no real review but suddenly everyone wants it
And I would ABSOLUTELY WATCH a “products I didn’t have time to review” series, where the releases have come and gone. That way, the hype over them has come and gone, and it can be “is it worth it to wait” to type-thing
Me *never used any of these products, wasn't planning on getting them, and don't watch other beauty gurus* Also me: yes, Robert 100% definitely agree, soooo overhyped soooo overexaggerated yessss Roberttttt
Honestly, a blog that's essentially a compilation of your reviews of different makeup products and brands would be really nice! You and your brother should create a blog for Skincare and Makeup
Everybody is talking about his background, which is amazing, but why is no one (from what I've seen) talking about his shirt?! The witchy vibes that it is giving me are something else! 🦇💜
Tarte shapetape was one of the first concealers I ever bought (because of the hype) and I genuinely thought that my skin was really really bad and that all concealers just weren't for me because of it. I thought it couldn't be the concealer because it was the best concealer ever, everyone says so! It wasn't until much later that I realised, no, it was the concealer.
Same! I was in my early 20s when I first tried it (I’m 29 now) and it made my under eyes look so crepey and dry and wrinkly 😬😰 I felt like something was wrong with me because everyone else seemed to love it.
I honestly feel nars is underrated. They have a few cult classics like radiant creamy and lagoona and orgasm but they have a ton of other amazing products no one talks about. Their stick foundation and liquid blushes are amazing
I definitely heard a lot more about nars a few years back. I wonder if the change in cruelty free status is the reason they stopped being so popular. I know a lot of people and influencers only want to use cruelty free brands.

I think a good idea for color pop to do their theming and not make people feel disappointed is to do what you said, sell an empty pallet with those magnetic bases. People could mix and match eyeshadow colors that speak to them and they could offer "suggested eyeshadows" or "limited edition" specific for that theme.
they offer an empty magnetic palette and singles, and all their round pan palettes are magnetic so you can mix them up however you want for travel or convenience.
@@pauladarrow4057 I know they do. That's why I think it'd be smart to do their collaborations like that instead of what they do now. I think it would curb disappointment in the collab palletes.

Robert is literally the only RUclips makeup artist that I trust when it comes to product recommendations. I've never been disappointed buying something he recommends.
When I was in high school the all-nighter setting spray was the ONLY thing that kept my makeup from melting off at the end of the day. I’ve used it before to cover a bruise and it lasted through a shower.
@@grey6703 I’ve personally used it for probably close to a decade and have allergies sensitive skin but oily and I love the deslick, I use the all nighter for like events but not on a daily. I’ve never not had it on hand. Even on like outdoor activity days it makes me less greasy throughout so my sunglasses don’t fall off when say hiking or playing sports.
I always picture the still shot from the video where James turned him into a princess. The disappointment. Marcus has used it in other videos are its GOLDEN.
I’ve learned so many amazing makeup tips from Robert. I love how you’re not snotty about the brands that you feel are over hyped, and explain why , it’s just how you feel personally. Drama Free, Definitely the best MUA I’ve ever watched. How you apply your concealer changed my life! Lol one dot in the corner, one on the end and blend it! Def going to be using all nighter as a primer now. Robert you’re the best!
As a former preschool teacher....I couldn't relate more to the Frozen bit. Oh. My. God. Everything Frozen and Elsa and Anna for like 7 goddamn years. I saw the first one once and yet somehow I can identify all the characters and sing half the songs. Hell I think I could give a decent synopsis of both films.
My daughter went through 5 dvd and bluray copies of the original frozen.. I can't imagine having that many kids go on and on and on and on... I'm picturing being caught in a lamb chop loop if that makes sense...
The thing I discovered about the tarte shape tape concealer is that literally less is more (I have deep and dark eye bags). It’s very full coverage without needing a thick layer like normal concealers. Also I don’t layer my concealer on top of/below the foundation bc it’ll for sure crease. AND it’s better to use your fingers to blend it out so it’ll melt into your skin rather than just be pushed around via brush or soaked up by a beauty sponge!
I only recently started using the sky high mascara, and i am OBSESSED. Everything that it did not do for you, it did for me. It separates, it gives me length. But does not work for all. 😊
Not to diminish you and your talent, but I’m vibing with that background- It’s pure perfection! Mystical, magical, and perfectly spooky, honestly.. just like you. Love you, Robert! 🖤
Nars natural radiant foundation is the GOAT for me. Long wearing, good coverage but not cakey, luminous but not greasy looking, and honestly is no different in price to any other “luxury” foundation!
I don’t know if you’ve already done this video but one about matching blush/lipstick to your skin tone would be really helpful. I’ve got pale olive skin with a neutral undertone and I am stumped on what blushes would suit me
I’ve got more mature skin and Shape Tape was horrible on me!! BTW- your concealer method is now becoming the new way :). A lot of other makeup RUclipsrs have switched to it.
I love most Nars products too! I also appreciate that they don’t release new products every time I blink. The cream blush wasn’t great for me but I think it was more of a shade thing. However, their liquid blush is still amazing and I don’t even care about the cost because you literally need less than a drop and a bottle will last forever! ETA: I do think their shade names are a bit silly...like a teenager trying too hard to be edgy or something. 😂
I’ve only ever tried one thing from them and that is their light reflecting foundation and I have to say I absolutely love it it does have a slight learning curve to it though as the most new products I am assuming and I am looking forward to trying more products from them
The ofra highlight is the best!!!!! I work at an elementary school and before quarantine happened and we would wear makeup. The kiddos always noticed when I wore my highlighter in the shade glow goals, compared to any other highlighter I wore. They always said how pretty it looked ❤️
'The internet makes you buy shit... and I do!' *laughs way too hard before giving both Robert and James the eyebrow for how much I've spent at Ulta since I started watching them* 🧐🧐💄🛍
Love this! I dont usually read blogs bc they are so wordy...but! I do like that they provide the reasons such as if it's a bad or good products, prices, where to buy, etc. I would like to see more swatches too. Not many people provide swatches.
12:18 I agree 100% with Nars. I absolutely LOVE Nars. Anything Nars is always worth it. I know it’s expensive but it’s bc it’s SO good! But I love Shape Tape as well! It’s my fav! I think people who are having issues with it is bc they are using way to much. You don’t need a lot at all. As long as you prep your skin right & you don’t over do it, it’s amazing. It’s not like something you have to do when your upside down and looking backwards. I just mean you you use eye cream & it’s not slick. Idk if that’s making sense lol I’m so tired.
Huge Sailor Moon fan over here, and I use the palette at least once a week. It’s a challenging one to use because of the limit of the colors for sure. I wish they’d included more characters into the palette-opportunity wasted! Thank you for talking about this! ❤️ 🌙 ✨ 🐈⬛ 🎀
When you use makeup the way it’s intended, or follow the directions on the packaging, you will be surprised by how many products you like. People apply a full coverage concealer all over their face, huge triangles under their eyes and wonder why it’s cakey 😂 Because you caked it on your face, maybe? Lol. Anyway, love your videos and your input 🙌🏽
You have the best background I have ever seen. I have anxiety and believe it or not it makes me feel calm. A crazy hyper nurse is now calm watching your video. You are the best! I am new to your channel! Love love love. People love my makeup since I listen to your tips! Thanks!!!!
I AGREE!! this made me feel so safe and relaxed and I could actually concentrate on him instead of the background and being constantly distracted my AHD gets the best of me sometimes!!
I think colour pop should just do themed z palettes w maybe an added lippie or a couple single shadows. Then you can have the option to buy singles and make your own themed palettes.
I think themed Z palettes would be a great addition to a collection, but I feel like curating a z palette tends to be a lot more expensive than dropping $12-14 on an already made one.
I literally dropped my phone when Robert says the most iconic line ever... "That's what the internet does, it makes us buy $hit! AND I DO!!!" Me too, sweetheart, me too!!!
Tarte shape tape is one of the VERY few concealers that fits my skin tone - I’m pale, but have yellow undertones, but a lot of brands think pale people can only be pink undertoned :(
...no. it's the opposite. It's very difficult to find pink undertone fair concealers and foundations. Idk where you shop but in my 30 years of life most ranges only do yellow undertones, I have to seek out fair pink. That's strange I've never heard the reverse before. Are you in the US?
I love, love, love the Ofra highlighters. I have about 8-9 different shades and I totally agree with Robert said about looking lit from within and it gives a very natural radiance. I dint like highlighters that when you wear them its obviously a highlighter. I also really like several Nars products. I have mature dry skin and the Nars cream products sit sooooo nicely on my skin. Thanks Robert, great video as always..
Robert, please please please do a video on your non-beauty favourites! I'd love to know more about some of your staple jewelry pieces, your decor, and that handheld mirror 😩
I love Colourpop, but they seem more invested in bringing out lots of new releases rather than restocking cult products that people really love (eg. brow products and super shock shadows) but loving this video as always
You have NO IDEA how hard I squealed when he said that!! That was my favorite game for YEARS after it became obsolete. I'd still play it, but it doesn't work with newer computers anymore.
You should try the makeup revolution 5D lash mascara, it's volumising and doesn't clump so much like other mascara's too. You only need 1 coat and it already volumises your lashes, but you can use more than one coat if you want. I was going to say the loreal telescopic mascara as well, since it has a small wand and so it gets to every lash and you can also do your bottom lashes too. But I don't think it's cruelty free so I wouldn't recommend in that case.
Rimmel London Extra 3D Lash. The black and green tube. It has short, thin and really well alligned bristles that don't clump your lashes togheter, but also give you what you need in terms of volume. I have long lashes that lack the volume, and this mascara does it for me. It is also affordable!
That depends on what you want from a mascara! Chonky lashes - ABH lash freak. Long lashes Benefit they're real magnetic, Hourglass (the gold one 😂) orrrrr loreal telescopic!
I think the Nars thing is the fact that they as a brand come up with great color stories and/or products but the CHEAPER dupes get created by other brands and people jump on those instead. For example the O** blush, and having luminous (Milani) and countless other pink shimmery blushes.

Right!? It looked terrible on every part of my face 😂
I thought it was a great concealer.
@SJJoker, I hope you read this! What would you recommend as an under eye concealer?
I found that shape tape was too dry for me (and I couldn't find my shade). I'm currently using the Tarte Creasless Concealer. It's a lot more hydrating than shape tape and has a thinner consistency. Much better for under eyes.
@@YaniDLC I have very little experience with makeup, but I don't have any issues with my maybelline concealer :)
I want him to do a react to 'Emma fleming'

Omg yes imagine a bold red, a bold blue. Some gold and silver ✨ that would've been a stunning palette
White, navy blue, cherey red and gold.
Tangerine, cyan, rust red, emmerald green.
Grape purple, earthy brown, turqoise and deep green.
They could've literally picked a color from each of the scouts and make a gorgeous colorful palette!
the sailor moon palette :(( the shade silver millenium isnt even silver, its a pale gold
I mean! 🧡
That’s what I was think I still like the palette for spring looks and the shade silver millennium I use for highlight in the inner corner

Yes exactly! Very few have the ability to criticize and yet not get cancelled. Just so graceful lol, does that make sense?
Morphe as a whole. I remember when influencers were pushing a specific highlighter brush, I bought it and it felt like rubbing a steel brush on my face
I got that brush too! It just doesn't work.
It sheds so much too!!
What brush is it?
@@RobertWelsh your welcome handsome
Using it in small amounts it works well for me and doesn’t look cakey but it could depend if skin types 🤷♀️ mine is combo
Shape tape works best when only a few dots applied to each eye and using a DAMP sponge (even tarte says the damp sponge method is the best way to apply it) X

Thats what they already have here on YT lol. Video blog
P.S. I would love if color pop would let you create your own palette and pick from their previous packaging!!!

They also sell empty pallettes

Tarte shapetape was one of the first concealers I ever bought (because of the hype) and I genuinely thought that my skin was really really bad and that all concealers just weren't for me because of it. I thought it couldn't be the concealer because it was the best concealer ever, everyone says so! It wasn't until much later that I realised, no, it was the concealer.
Same! I was in my early 20s when I first tried it (I’m 29 now) and it made my under eyes look so crepey and dry and wrinkly 😬😰 I felt like something was wrong with me because everyone else seemed to love it.
ikr!!!! everyone seemed to get along SO WELL with this concealer that i thought my skin and/or my makeup routine was wrong

When he said “That’s why I’ve never seen the Harry Potter films” I felt SO seen- like literally, when people talk about stuff SO much it’s like you get tired of it before you even see it.
I grew up in a really conservative house and was never allowed to wear makeup. I think a good idea for color pop to do their theming and not make people feel disappointed is to do what you said, sell an empty pallet with those magnetic bases. People could mix and match eyeshadow colors that speak to them and they could offer "suggested eyeshadows" or "limited edition" specific for that theme.
You need to pitch your ideas to them and maybe get a little kick back for the idea
they offer an empty magnetic palette and singles, and all their round pan palettes are magnetic so you can mix them up however you want for travel or convenience.
@@pauladarrow4057 I know they do. That's why I think it'd be smart to do their collaborations like that instead of what they do now. I think it would curb disappointment in the collab palletes.

I love most Nars products too! I also appreciate that they don’t release new products every time I blink. The cream blush wasn’t great for me but I think it was more of a shade thing. However, their liquid blush is still amazing and I don’t even care about the cost because you literally need less than a drop and a bottle will last forever!

I think colour pop should just do themed z palettes w maybe an added lippie or a couple single shadows. Then you can have the option to buy singles and make your own themed palettes.
That's such a great idea 🙌
I think themed Z palettes would be a great addition to a collection, but I feel like curating a z palette tends to be a lot more expensive than dropping $12-14 on an already made one.

It works well for pale olive ppl too ;) probably skin type matters too tho
...no. it's the opposite. It's very difficult to find pink undertone fair concealers and foundations. Idk where you shop but in my 30 years of life most ranges only do yellow undertones, I have to seek out fair pink. That's strange I've never heard the reverse before. Are you in the US?

So what ARE your favorite mascaras? I’m so tired of spending so much for mascaras that don’t deliver 😡
Essence princess lash mascara (the green one) is amazing! And it's only like $4 at Ulta
Rimmel London Extra 3D Lash.
The black and green tube.
It has short, thin and really well alligned bristles that don't clump your lashes togheter, but also give you what you need in terms of volume.
I have long lashes that lack the volume, and this mascara does it for me. It is also affordable!
Maybelline lash sensational. Love
