You forgot to mention the distinct heartbeat that starts early on with the ticking of the clock and the drums and chimes that slowly builds up which represents birth and the beginning of life. It’s just one more brilliant detail to that song 👏🏼

Exactly! This song becomes more and more relevant as you age. I grew up with Pink Floyd because of my parents love for them and I started listening to them on my own when I was 12. I’m almost 46 and I can listen to them every day all day and I wouldn’t get tired of them. I’ve been sure to pass them on to my daughter who’s 23 and she loves them immensely. Pink Floyd is the GOAT imo and their music has taught me so many important things about life. You don’t listen to Pink Floyd, you experience Pink Floyd!!

    The opening clocks chiming...
My dad was an antiques dealer and collector. He had a collection of over 200 pendulum clocks of every type you can imagine, which he kept in the house, with only a few actually being used to show time. One weekend, way back in the '70s, he wound them ALL up because he was to be interviewed by a TV crew coming out from the big city. Long story short, they never came. But for that whole weekend, at noon and midnight, it sounded like that opening, but with many, many more clocks! ...my dad always liked this song. ;-]

1973 had to be the greatest year in prog Rock this album Dark Side Of The Moon and Genesis Selling England By The Pound two ultimate Prog classics. Time is utterly 'Timeless' the lyrics in this are so true and meaningful, plus the gorgeous melody and stellar tone of the lead solo. A true classic Prog track, it just doesn't age ( sadly unlike us mortals as depicted in the song ). Great reaction so look forward to your Prog reactions.

Time is probably the most extractable track from Dark side of the Moon but I cannot emphasise enough the need to listen to the album as a whole piece. Each song runs into the next and it was designed to be listened to as a continuous piece. Each song stands up on its own but the whole is so much more than the sum of its amazing parts. From opening heartbeat to closing heartbeat this is the greatest album of all time. You mentioned the female vocals and Time runs into the instrumental piece ‘the great gig in the sky’ which has the most amazing female vocals (yeah I know, instrumental piece with female vocals…….?? Well you just have to listen to see !)

Here's a discussion question if anyone has any thoughts - especially vocalists among you (cough Brandon cough): You often hear Gilmour's singing voice described as "soothing" or "comforting", but usually with the caveat that he will never top anyone's "favorite singers" list [shows what YOU know, he tops MINE!]. So, you with technical know-how and ability to articulate it, what is he doing that works so well for so many people? How would you define his vocal qualities?

    • @retroreactions....
      @retroreactions....  Год назад +2

Well for me he has a classic voice still perfect for rock, but with a much smoother and well rounded tone/capability than many of the simply "screamer" rock singers. There's more depth, more layers, can adapt to fit the specific song/mood, and that quality is perfect and necessary for the depths and ideas that their rich music portrays...

I'm surprised that as of this writing, no one has told you yet again in this video that you should NOT listen to songs from "The Dark Side of the Moon" in isolation. The album was meant to be listened all at once, and your perception of the songs changes completely when you do that. Well, I'm the first to tell you that today, but be prepared for a flood of comments reinforcing what I'm saying.
Other reactors did the same and started reacting to isolated tracks, got their backlash in the comments, whined and complained of the logistics involved in making such a long video, and of changing the way they make their videos, but most eventually complied and found a way to react to the full album (most split the reaction into two videos). And all were completely floored, but thankful. "The Dark Side of the Moon" is like having major surgery in your soul, especially on the first listen. It takes time to recover, but it's totally worth it!
Oh, and for old Pink Floyd fans like me, THIS is the default Pink Floyd sound (from "Meddle" to "Animals", with the latter already showing some signs of deviation from the previous trademark sound, but still mostly familiar). It's their more recent works that "sound different" (as does their earlier, more psychedelic work in "Piper" and "Saucerful", with "Atom Heart Mother" being a very atypical album in many ways, which many people both loving it and hating it passionately --- I'm one of the rare people in the middle, I find it okay).

Well, I would say no one else has said it because I'm aware of it and even mentioned that at the end of the video. But I still chose to do 1 more amazing one from it. I've planned all along to listen to the full album as one next month (along with Depeche Mode's new one). But what is unknown is if it will get blocked, as I've never done that kind of format before. I will definitely have to release it in sections or song by song, but at least I will have the proper experience! I never whine and complain about the longer process it takes me daily to make vids, due to several issues. This video today alone took 5 hours total!

Great reaction Brandon. As others comment, Dark Side of the Moon needs to be listened to from start to finish. The song after this on the album “The Great Gig in the Sky” is a must to listen from the live Pulse album. You want to hear female singers….. I’ll say no more!

Thank you for another excellent review......but !!!
I do believe that Time & The Great Gig in the Sky should always be reviewed and listened to as one song.
I like to think that Time is the intro, prelude, to The Great Gig but I think many fans would consider The Great Gig to be the “ finale” to Time, as it is in real life.

@@retroreactions.... Be careful with the Great Gig...... the original vinyl and CD is the best version by a big margin..... all the remastered versions stuff it up.
They change the tone, alter the final vocal notes and some of them have removed the final vocals all together.

the ending is really a reprise from an earlier track called "breathe (in the air). over the years it's become part of "time". that's a main reason why you need to listen to TDSOTM start to finish rather than dissecting it into pieces.

It must be difficult in one way to be reactor of quality music...and not moving into the next song on the album, all of us looking at you indulging in these songs knows the albums you are reaction to side by side. If I do not recall it wrong, the Pulse version of this is as good. Nick Mason (and Bob Siebenberg from Supertramp) likes the toms. There are quite few songs by Pink Floyd with female background..but maybe not on Animals

Well, in the real world for sure, but very hard to know where to pause in a brand new song, especially Pink Floyd, they shouldn't be paused anywhere, but there are the rules/realities/legalities of RUclips of course. I try my best for sure!, thanks for watching....

  • @flubblert

Gotta be honest, your interruption of Dave's solo on this one killed it for me. One of his most iconic. David Gilmour is one of the most brilliant guitarists of all time. It's customary to let his solos play out. Or at the very least as I suggested before, mercifully back it up a few clicks before rejoining so as not to ruin the flow... so essential when listening to this band whose music is so defined by the vibe it creates and builds upon in nearly every song. "Time" is usually considered *quintessential* Floyd. If it sounds different to you, might because you've taken a bit of a circuitous route getting to it. I was actually shocked to discover you were just now hitting it. Most people hear this long before they get to "Animals" that I think you've just come off of and is usually the album most people find to be somewhat different sounding for them. "Time" is one of their first really big songs that got, and continues to get, continuous play on classic rock radio everywhere. It's one of those songs that practically defines the genre. The last part of the song is a reprise of the song "Breathe" that happens in the introductory part of the album, but can't really be appreciated taken out of context if you haven't heard the first part. If there was ever a Pink Floyd album that should be started from the beginning and listened to straight through it is this one... "Dark Side of the Moon", from production, format, engineering, and musicality, an artistic masterpiece in every sense of the word.

What can I say? I'm not perfect and my reactions won't always be flawless, especially since I have 0 familiarity with the song. Luckily, I do rewind 10 seconds now on every reaction after the pause, including this one, and that definitely helps both me and the listener..

I will also be listening to the album in full in 1 shot next month, so I'll get much closer to the full experience (short of not being filmed/giving commentary). I'm sure I will still have to release in sections or song by song, due to strict legal/youtube rules, but I'm excited to hear the full seamless album together, and 7 of the 10 songs I will have never heard yet.

Hello ! I really would like to see you react to Shadow Of The Hierophant from the 1975 solo album by Steve Hackett. He was at the time guitarist in Genesis and this song features Mike Rutherford on bass and Phil Collins on drums - Thus 3/4 of the band here. Musical journey including a long build up that always reminds me Ravel's Boléro. Note that this tune was rehearsed by Genesis during the Foxtrot sessions but was actually rejected by the band.
