  • Project no.113 DIY Homemade Mortiser Drilling Machine
    This project really drills a sqaure hole with a mortiser bit,
    this will helps a lot to make a mortise for a tenon joint.
    i used P204 bearing pillow block as a linear bearing and it works well in my case.
    all mild steel plate used are 5mm thick
    i used a 1/2Hp water pump motor, i adjusted the value of the capacitor to have enough power to drill.
    and the clamps are from my old long bar clamps

    What's the advantage of this over a drill press and a cross slide vise?

    • @shirothehero0609
      @shirothehero0609 2 года назад +1

      Drill presses almost universally use a Morse taper to hold the chuck in which is not meant for any side loading, only straight down and regular drills aren't meant for side cutting as their cutting edges are on the tip only. so even if you put an endmill in a drill press so you can cut horizontally, you will eventually loosen the taper that holds the chuck in the spindle (unless it has a bolt through the other end of the spindle, but very likely not since Morse tapers aren't designed to be bolted in, only pressed). Even taking very light side loading cuts with an endmill, it will be enough to eventually loosen it and drop the chuck.
      These are also called mortising machines. They use a special bit that is essentially a square chisel with a drill bit inside so that as the drill drills out the center, the corner chisels effectively square cut the hole as you put downward pressure on the chuck/spindle and thus, you HAVE to keep drilling vertically to square the hole, otherwise you will also end up with a rounded mortise pocket.
      Hope that helps!

    • @Enigma-Sapiens
      @Enigma-Sapiens 2 года назад +2

      @@shirothehero0609, Thank you. Exactly, using those mortising bits you could easily just use a drill press, a cross vise would be for convenience only so you don't have to keep moving and reclamping the piece. It just seems like a lot of trouble to me for something that could easily be done on a drill press, BUT, it is a great idea and build anyway.

    • @shirothehero0609
      @shirothehero0609 2 года назад +2

      @@Enigma-Sapiens absolutely. And I totally agree, a lot of extra work to make a single purpose tool, but definitely still cool. Even though this could have been done in a much more simple fashion using a drill press.

    Nice work, but you already have a drill press and the morticing chisel bit. So, don't you just really need a slide mount vise to hold the wood? Same functionality except one fewer dedicated tools in the workshop.
