- You may be wondering why this video is out later than usual. That's simple: I was waiting for a move or two to occur (mainly the Erik Karlsson trade) and there wasn't a whole lot that happened. Most players opted for one-year contracts in the hopes that the salary cap will rise significantly next season.
That being said, there were some big moves to discuss. This video is the (hopeful) roundup of an NHL offseason full of quiet tension and methodical calculation. Спорт
Rest in peace, Rick Jeanneret. Sorry the Sabres could never win you a Cup. Your calls will forever mean the world to any true hockey fan. 🙏
That hurt to hear last night. Watched the Mayday call last night in his honor
@@seanragsdale5636I did that today when I heard.
Watched the OT goal by Afinogenov on game 5 vs the Rangers in 07 too
AYOOO WHAT
As a lifelong Sabres fan, thank you for this comment. ❤
He was an excellent announcer. I'm sorry to hear that
very nice tribute to amirov at the end. its really sad to see a kid who is on his way to live the dream of playing hockey professionally pass away so young. r.i.p.
Definitely a blow to the Leafs' current prospect pool. Hopefully they can replace the void left behind by it.
@@grahamdamberger7130he was their best forward prospect at the time of his diagnosis. Doubt it, he’s the highest pick they’ve had since drafting Matthews.
21 is way too goddamn young. Fuck cancer.
He was born at this century, still hard to believe, I did lose my grandfather early this year due to cancer too, but this is a blow that will be hard to recover for everyone involved, my prayers to them
ME TOO😭😭
RIP Rick and Amirov, their lives will be missed by the hockey community.
RIP to Leafs hero Bobby Baun too, excellent career featuring one of the most legendary goals of the Original Six era

The reaction to the Pens moves was the worth the wait.
I am impressed Dubas was able to delete Hextall’s mistakes with one trade.
He’s a very good GM, has improved immensely since his initial Toronto days. I think he was given the reins a bit too early, but he’s def grown and I think letting him walk is going to be another in a long list of decisions that will haunt the leafs.
His new core 4!
@@amsro9094 ehhh, the core four thing was always overhyped by media. Acting like Rielly wasn’t a core piece of the team is dumb as hell, especially when he’s making more than Willy.
I think this past season was the best chance they’ll ever get with this group, with Matthews and Nylander needing new deals, and Marner due the year after (thanks Kyle!). I expected ROR to leave and honestly I’m more upset they didn’t match what Acciari got in PGH. If they’d played the bruins like they planned, or if they’d actually bothered to play in game 3 or gotten competent officiating, who knows what might have happened. As is, I’m expecting a down year compared to the last 3 seasons, but they’ll probably still win the division with how much the teams around them have lost. Fuck I hate this team so much lmao
@@Pikabo0 that is exactly what I liked about dubas. Even tho he made mistakes, it seemed that he learned from them. I could see his improvement as a GM as the seasons went on. I was sad to see him go from the leafs D:
It felt like a fever dream, still havent got a clue how he conned 3 awful contracts, a 10 protected 1st rounder in an average draft class. and a run of the mill average backup into one of the best offensive defensemen of this generation.
I am really excited to watch the Sabres this season, they seem to have finally turned a corner and are a legitimate playoff contender for the first time in 12 painful years. Then last night happened and honestly I don’t even know what to say, I have been listening to RJ for over 30 years and I loved every minute, every call, every enduring and heartfelt moment. He was the best part of the Sabres win or lose, he was the only constant that brought generations of fans together in good times and bad and his impact on the team, the city and the NHL will never be seen again. I had really hoped that he would be with us long enough to see this team reach its full potential and win the Stanley Cup and that he could be there on the ice with them when they raised it. He deserved that more than anyone in the history of this franchise but now it is not to be. Rest in peace RJ and thank you for 50 years of great memories.
Lot of audio bits were chopped poorly, cutting off for like 100ms multiple times. It's been in a couple of the last few vids. Otherwise, looking forward to 2023 Sportskeks; don't burn yourself out. 💜

Can’t wait for this to either age horribly or well, this NHL offseason has been fun so far.

Or both

This is just the free agency recap. How would this age poorly,
@@JarradBruessel32 seriously, why are people so dumb on YT
As a bruins fan, this last year has really hurt. First being the best team in nhl history, to going up 3-1 in the first round, then collapsing, then Bergeron retires, then Krejci retires. Now probably a rebuild.
It's a reload if anything. Pasta, McAvoy, Lindholm, Zacha, and Marchand are all still here, and they have $30mil in cap next year
It should be looked as the biggest choke in NHL history
I wouldn’t use that word until both of their goalies aren’t on the team
Zacha as a 1C. Lol. I can tell you from experience that won’t work.

A promising prospect (Rodion Amirov)
A great old cup-winning stalward on the ice (Bobby Baun)
And a great old stalward with a royal blue and golden voice (Rick Jeanneret)

Rest in Peace Rodion Amirov & RJ
For real damnnnn
Steve Yzerman is the AI in franchise mode who gets like 3 more players for each position than the team needs
Do AI GM's also trade away all the young players that the team sucked for years to get? 🙄
@unoriginalandrew who did we trade young that we sucked for? The youngish guys that have been traded (Hronek, Lindstrom, Zadina) were not only Holland picks, but either severely underperforming or was on the way out either way
@@unoriginalandrewzadina wanted out, lindstrom is trash. Hronek wants to be paid more than we wanted to pay him.
Welcome to the EA era, baby, ask FIFA how it is
Sad part is we brought in Fisher and he does everything Zadina does and a bit better then him

Two words. Alexander Nikishin. He's looking insane right now in Russia, and he's going to be out of his KHL contract once Orlov's contract runs out.
Surely, nothing can go wrong for a top flight Russian player once his KHL contract runs out
Didn’t expect that ending. RIP.

I still can't process RJ being gone. He was a comforting, constant presence from the earliest days of my childhood right up until he retired. His announcing and my dad's passion for the game and for the Sabres are why I'm a devoted hockey fan to this day.
😫😭😭 DUDE ME TOO
Sharks fan here. I'm happy for Karlsson. He's way too good of a player to be mired in such a sub par organization as San Jose. He deserves to succeed and win. I hope he's able to do that in Pittsburg and wish him all the luck in the world.
the pens are where the sharks were when he signed that ridiculous contract. an old team with no prospects aging out of playoff contention and only getting worse. he hasn't played a single playoff game on that contract and might not do so for the rest of it.
@@doaftheloafgood luck, we all knew that was a bad contract from the gm. Least we still will have a bunch of cap space in coming years.
@@ColonizerChan far as I’m concerned, my team won that deal. I’m a habs fan. we got rid of hoffman and pitlick for actual assets. so far, desmith, lindstrom, a 2nd, and a 4th. each one of those pieces is more than hoffman or pitlick is worth.
Sharks need to trade Couture and Hertl now go full rebuild
RIP Amirov, he was going to be a great player but it wasn't meant to be. 😢

@@humblelad In the anime Dragon Ball Z Frieza is the main villain of the Namek Saga and that section has been criticized heavily for being stretched out and taking forever to finish, that's what he's comparing it too.
I'm not worried about the Wings yet. The signings are bridge deals to keep from fostering a losing culture and give the prospects time to develop. By the time most of the free agent signings are up, the Kaspers and ASPs will be ready and they'll have loads of cap room
Great end piece to the video. Well deserved R.I.P

8:12 To be fair, Carolina has taken many risks in FA in the last few years, and they've mainly worked out. Especially in Carolina Orlov can thrive. Can't explain the 8mil/yr though
Congrats to Cale Makar and Avalanche for being on Cover of NHL 24 💙
As a Knights fan the Smith trade hurts but it had to happen. Reilly Smith will always be a big part of Vegas. The crowd that showed for him in the annual battle for Vegas charity baseball event was special. As for his play he's a Great leader, can have stretches of cold nights but is clutch when need to be. Take good care of him Pittsburgh
Crazy to think that Ryan Reaves got a job before Patrick Kane but honestly it’s funnier than it is crazy
Lol
to be fair kane is recovering from surgery and probably wont sign with a team until later this season as a result.
As a Habs fan...year 2-3 of the rebuild...Welcome to development and finishing unfinished 2019 projects like Dach and Newhook ! The defense prospect pool is stacked with the addition of Rienbacher and that forward group is starting to look pretty good. Let's see them not all injured like last year for a change ! loll
Habs rebuild is very interesting. I think Dach still has potential… if he can stay healthy. Probably got another 2-3 years in the basement unfortunately:(

I can see Benning throwing things everywhere after seeing OEL win a cup with Florida.
Pretty impressive how well Zito managed that offseason. Pretty much everything he did worked
For Yzerman, the Holls (who isn’t as bad as Toronto made him out to be) Chiarots, and other signings of that nature are all stop gaps while his drafted prospects make their way up, and they are starting to get here. Ed, Wallinder, ASP, Ajo, etc
Holl was inconsistent at best, pretty bad at worst.
I mean Holl was absolutely awful at times, but maybe that was a confidence issue, I still think he's a 7th D man at best though
As a Sharks fan, honestly. I think Grier did fine. We cleared cap and the contracts we got are off the book in 2 years and we got another 1st. Rebuilding team and all that. The future hinges on Eklund and Smith panning out. I'm excited for once
Seriously, like all we heard was "lol sharks Grier waited too long and is too greedy with the retained salary you're gonna get a 3rd rounder for him and like it." then Grier gets a 1st AND only a fraction retained salary WITH guys that we might be able to flip at the deadline for more assets and now its "lol sharks underwhelmed again." like what more do you want from him? this was EK65's first healthy season in *years* people were leery taking on all that salary on the high likelihood that it's an outlier season. And with the dead cap from burns, Vlasic's dead weight contract, as well as cooch and Tomas taking up a big chunk having that much cap flexibility is huge. Grier's biggest task is fixing our awful cap situation and he's doing a solid job.
no, you ate shit. if you were going to deal away a 100 point dman AND take on all those shit contracts, you needed to talk pittsburgh out of a significant prospect like pickering as well as the 1st. even a 2nd rounder would have been fine. but as the deal stands, grier lost his ass.
@@jameswatson8387To be fair, the Sharks really didn't get a 1st for Karlsson. The first was the price for taking on the bad contracts, not for Karlsson. The trade definitely could've been worse but it's definitely mediocre.
It was the same reaction fans gave Ottawa when that trade happend and look how that played out… I’m a big EK65 fan and Sharks fan but there’s no guarantee that he stays healthy… there’s also a chance the Pens fall off like the Sharks did and it could end up a lottery pick in 2025 as the best outcome…
@@MajinBuu91 ottawa got norris and the pick that became stutzle.

Goddamn Jeanneret’s whole life was the Sabres, rip to a legend
My Predators i think are in one of the most interesting positions. Big prospect pool thats relatively deep, best goalie prospect getting ready to backup a vezina contender, and finally a change of our core. Its gonna be an interesting couple seasons to see what happens. Im rooting for both Trotzy and Brunnette this year but im not holding my breath for a playoff spot. Ill be happy just seeing more development in our young guys and see what moves we make at the amazingly juicy free agency next year.

When Sportball is uploaded, we stop what we do and watch. RIP Rick Jeanneret. One of the best NHL announcers of all time!.
As a Devils fan, it’s fun to be going through hockey withdrawals for the first time in more than a decade, but also kind of annoying.
Edit: Blackwood kind of screwed himself. The team mishandled his heel injury but by that time, the fans were already soured on him because of his vaccine dithering (he was ON THE TABLE ABOUT TO GET IT and left because of his recent Instagram follows, and it took three months to get him on board).
Add to that the Giants being good again. One hopes. But thankfully, LOLMETS is eternal, which brings me back to earth.
The Yankees are their own brand of pain too!
All he needed to do was get vaccinated and his career wouldn't have been ruined. Now, he just lost himself a Stanley Cup because of he bought into anti-vax conspiracy theories.
Trades like the Karlsson one make me glad we got Kent Hughes heading the Habs rebuild. I'm still amazed that we managed to dump Hoffman after all that, too.
we get a 2nd, a 4th, a young dman, and whatever we get when we trade desmith, all from two players we thought we'd have to pay to jettison.
FINALLY I was waiting for this
I think the logic behind the Sharks end of the Karlsson trade is to free up cap space a couple of years down the road when they expect to be contenders again.
Jukka Jalonen watching the Blue Jackets coaching situation: "Am I a joke to you?"
The Orlov deal is actually pretty good for Carolina. Get a good defenseman to improve the top 4 since either Skjei, Pesce, or both are gone. And pay him a little more for these two years instead of signing long term. Nikishin will be coming over from the KHL when the Orlov deal is done and he slots in as the replacement there (or more like Orlov is the place holder until Nikishin gets here)
She did yes sir
We’re all here for his reaction to the Erik Karlsson trade, just admit it
As a Caps fan, the plan is simple. Get Ovie over the line then blow it up and rebuild. The Wilson deal is arguably a couple of years too long but he's been rewarded now for being the best at his role in the league at the start of the deal and loyalty to the club at the end.
Excited by Buffalo, amused by Toronto, bemused by the Rangers

At least Karlsson is finally traded and the sharks can now keep getting top draft picks and will have a lot of cap space next summer to use as an asset.
I hope so I was playing hockey next preseason on september yes
The problem Sean is that this was the draft to tank in. That isn't to say the other drafts are bad, the next three all look to have very good players in them. The problem is Bedard and Michkov are just on another level than anybody who goes 1st overall in 2024 and 2025.
If my math is correct the sharks will have about 25-28 mil in cap space next season given no trades or extensions thru this upcoming year
@@Shadow12aven Hoping the Pens finish bottom 10 this year so the 1st gets pushed back to 2025 and then they completely fall off the map in 2025 and the Sharks grab Michael Misa. After that the Sharks finish last and get a top 3 pick this year (Celebrini, Eiserman, or Demidov all look very promising, and there are several good defensemen coming up right after them).
There's been some discussion about Demidov being better than Michkov as well. From the Daily Faceoff:
"Some scouts think Demidov will be better than Michkov. My opinion? It’s definitely close, but I’m not making that determination in the middle of August. And you shouldn’t either. It’s also really easy to overvalue a prospect playing preseason games in the summer when the North American leagues aren’t even close to training camp."
I'm also looking forward to 2026 where Bedard's cousing Gavin McKenna is an early favorite to go first overall. Obviously he's still very young but in the same leagues he's put up better numbers than Bedard did. Yeah, I'm not a super optimistic Sharks fan.
@@jonmendelson1104You know what you’re talking about and it’s refreshing seeing people look beyond the current season of this trade… baffles me fans think the Sharks traded for the now, but they traded for the future!

lmao the binnington clip and commentary was so funny! and on point! 🤣
As a Bruins fan, we sold our soul for that 65 win season. We're completely fucked
As a red wings fan I’m definitely optimistic about some of those signings we made, if Justin Holl can do anything for us it could turn into a potential “Larry Murphy” like move (you Toronto fans know how that turned out lol), Definitely like the Debrincat trade, but reimer? There was really no one better?

5.1x5 for compher? that's 2m more than he's worth. congrats, you got another 3C for your 2C hole. good enough player, but not worth the contract and not a good fit for the role he's being asked to fill. yzerman's very good at the other parts of his job but when it comes to free agency he's jim benning.
we'll see if debrincat gives a shit this year. if he doesn't, he's just a defensive liability.
I'm coping hard saying the Kings are a legit cup contender but holy shit they should have just traded for Hellebuyck instead of Dubois. If he ends up shitting the bed it's gonna be considered one of the worst trades in their history, probably the worst.

Steve Yzerman: A Madman in Free Agency: Part 2
if only he were good at it.
When anyone doubts Yzerman, he goes sicko mode and makes everyone look silly. Wing’s will be having a surprisingly good season
he's rather shit at free agency. chiarot, copp, holl, compher. 18.875m for the next 3 years.
Hasso Plattner wasn't going to retain a lot of money on a guy who, by leaving, would already be costing the Sharks money through lack of ticket revenue. Grier did the best he could regarding the situation, and got a few players that'll help the tank on short term deals.
He’s like the richest owner in the league. He can afford that.
All of us Bruins fans are so happy for Bruce Cassidy. He's a great dude, and he deserves it.
Plus he did us a favor by beating the panthers that team deserves absolutely nothing I hope they implode this year

I’m still amazed how every Canadian team is stuck in hockey hell. The Oilers are still failing with Connor and Leon, the Leafs can’t find a way to make a deep playoff run, the Senators can’t find someone to buy them, the Flames management makes a burning dumpster look appealing, the Jets are more dysfunctional then a drunken pilot, and the Canucks exist. Lord help our frozen brothers to the North.
the Canes holding off on extension talks makes sense if the cap increase is real, but MAN they just cannot catch a break at signing people. you'd think being one of the best teams in the league with a lot of money to spend would help them secure a trade, but first Meier now Tarasenko and Karlsson? oof
I'm not a fan or getting TDA back but it DOES complete the circle of robbing the Flyers which is HILARIOUS, and it does seem being under Rod is the only place where that loser is functional.
As for the goalies... yeah nah gotta keep both after that year of goalie injuries. Spent a LOT of last year with netminders clearly playing through injuries, if not for being a defensive juggernaut they probably would have slipped to 2nd of 3rd
Oh thank Christ, I needed this today

Why does it seem that some of the segments are cut off?
Not all of the contracts Lou Lamoirello has given out are NEARLY as bad as people say they are. The best one he's given out in his time as Isles GM is far and away Brock Nelson. In May 2019 he signed a 6 year 36 million dollar deal to stay with the team through 2025 and he's led the Islanders in goals for four straight seasons. In 2021-22 he had 37 and in 2022-23 he had 36 and smashed his career high in points which was previously 59 and is now 75. Guy is one of the most underrated players in the league. Lou has also found diamonds in the rough when he acquired Hudson Fasching and Pierre Engvall. Zach Parise and Valterri Filppula and Derick Brassard are another three guys that I can think of that were very good for the Islanders. And how can I forget Robin Lehner, even though he was only an Islander for one year is beloved. He won the Bill Masterton trophy and was a Vezina finalist with the Islanders. The Engvall contract even though it is long, has the potential to be an absolute steal if he plays well and the salary cap goes up like we're hoping it will. If Engvall can be a 40-50 point guy every year, for three million dollars that's a bargain.
Took me a minute but the music is from Hitman Blood Money. Havent heard it in years
I'm impressed with the Leafs offseason moves with the Ryan Reaves, Martin Jones, Max Domi, and Tyler Bertuzzi acquisitions from free agency. But I'm pretty upset and honestly pissed off on Ryan O'Reilly and Luke Schenn signing with Nashville and Noel Acciari to the Pens. I mean it's ns. Ryan O'Reilly, Noel Acciari and Luke Schenn belongs to the Leafs, not to the Nashville Predators or Pittsburgh Penguins
I'm surprised you didn't mention Dmitry Kulikov's homecoming in Florida. With Montour and Ekblad both likely out to start the season we're gonna need all the defensive help we can get! Too bad we had to throw Duclair into shark-infested waters to get much-needed reinforcements..
The video we've all been waiting for.
I USED TO PRAY FOR VIDEOS LIKE THESE
Good video @urinatingtree but the editing transitions for each team feels cut, and rough
I think your look at Yzerman's moves are misplaced but I understand the criticism, especially on Justin Holl after the Petry signing. Steve is going to leverage the defensive depth if we make a playoff push or if we have to sell a bit at the deadline. Look at those one year deals. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes off like a thief with draft picks or a good top 6 forward later this year. Steve gets deals done
Love the WCW Revenge music in the background.
I don't mind the Engvall and Mayfield deals because for Engvall, he was outstanding for us, so we get him at a very low cap hit for good production. And for Mayfield he's finally hitting his prime and we get him at a dead low deal. We were going to be awful in a few years anyways so I don't really care about the future
WPG is looking more like a Winner in the PLD Trade
Love NHL 99 game music in the background :D
Hockey season is almost upon us. I don't know if these deals had gone through when you made the video, but the Blues also brought back Oscar Sundqvist and Mackenzie MacEachern to help bolster their bottom 6. Hopefully last season was just a blip, but even if it wasn't, I trust Doug Armstrong to use his glut of 2024 draft picks widely. LGB!
For real reason why I do from my homework from money
The thumbnail is lacking one legend from Buffalo who passed away, but the new one is an upgrade over seeing Kyle Dubas
