Revisiting the 2016 NHL Free Agent Class

  • A bit off the beaten path from the usual fare on this channel, but this is something I've wanted to analyze for some time now. Free agency comes with significant risk for the signing party: The player in question can either decline significantly, fail to mesh with the team, or just fall victim to bad luck. That part is always inevitable.
    The one class I keep coming back to, however, is the NHL free agent group of 2016. What has surprised me is how many signings from this particular class backfired spectacularly for teams. Lots of money and term being thrown around (some foolishly) only for it to end up looking even worse in hindsight.
    It's disturbing that I can say this less than three years after the fact. To see long-term issues crop up on this grand of a scale is relatively uncommon. Just look at how many signings were left available during the Vegas Expansion Draft. One year after signing these players, some teams were having regrets (or couldn't do anything because of no-movement clauses).
    This video... may show you something. Maybe it won't. If it were up to the athletes, they'd rather be playing at peak level. But injuries, age and time have other plans, unfortunately.

      Why would anyone blame the players? It's the GM's signing the players to dumb contracts, not the players.

    • @matthewmazzatto8003
      @matthewmazzatto8003 5 лет назад +5

      @@TheCandoRailfan It's more often unlucky injuries that hamper their careers. Look at the difference between Ryan Suter and Zack Parise. Both of them were signed to identical long-term contracts back in 2012 with the Wild. One of them has done well for the Wild, the other hasn't due to injuries. Tree touches on this in his video on the double acquisition. Basically, unless the players you're signing are gods like Ovechkin, don't make crazy long deals that involve no movement clauses for their entire tnure. If the Wild had given Parise and Suter 8 years instead of 13, they would be free of Parise's contract by now and could start truly rebuilding.

      How? His first lolcow was literally just making fun of everything wrong with the Cleveland Browns, the epitome of "saying what everyone else is thinking". Second verse, same as the first with the Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, and his Hater's Guide to the NFL Postseason (2016-2017). Even before he did sports full time, he made pretty much a lolcow vid on Venezuela, once more saying the things that everyone else was thinking. Even when he was the Fat Mann Judgeth 12 years ago, he made game reviews that almost went word for word with much better game reviewers of the same games such as "Dark Castle" for the Sega Genesis.

    What has happened since...
    Stamkos: 2 Stanley Cups. 'Nuff said.
    Yandle: Bought out, went to PHI, set a new record for GP, then got unceremoniously scratched.
    E. Staal: Traded to BUF then MTL, went to SCF, then went unsigned and went to the Olympics.
    Marchessault: Yanked by VGK then played the best hockey of his life.
    Radulov: Went to DAL then later had a Cup final appearance in 2020 somehow.
    Grabner: UFA now
    Russell: Still with EDM
    Hamhuis: retired
    C. Hutton: Went to BUF, ARI, then he went to the Leafs somehow.
    Colborne: Retired???
    Stempniak: retired
    Weise: Traded back to MTL then now playing in Sweden.
    McGinn: retired somehow
    Martin: Back in NYI then was somehow protected by Lou before SEA expansions.
    Bødker: Now in Switzerland and played in the Olympics.
    Reimer: Traded to CAR, had a career renaissance, then now playing in SJS again.
    Brouwer: retired
    Demers: Went to Russia, played with Eric Staal in the Olympics, then God knows what happened to him now.
    Backes: Traded to ANA and is now retired.
    Nielsen: Since bought out and is playing in Germany (played with Bødker at the Olympics).
    Eriksson: Traded to ARI along with all of Benning's other bad contracts in OEL trade.
    Okposo: Had a career renaissance this season, so good on him. Garth Snow must be punching the air right now.
    Ladd: Traded to ARI and playing with Eriksson.
    Lucic: Traded to CGY and is still doing the same old tricks.

    • @0rouni0
      @0rouni0 5 лет назад +1

      Specially if the contract is big one. I get it when lets say Jets wanna sign Mark Scheifele for 6.1 per year for 8 years as its huge robbery, he should be worth over 10 per year by far. But when Milan Lucic gets 6 million for 7 years its just wrong. People should look more player age and think if he plays like this at age of 30, its very unlikely that he keeps playing like this at age of 35. Players who are under 25 getting big +5 contracts is fine imo, for older people its a issue.

    It is truly amazing how fucking inept Chiarelli was. Traded away Seguin in Boston, traded away Hall for Adam fucking Larsson, traded the picks that the Islanders used to get Beauvillier and Barzal for a consistent healthy scratch player that Vegas picked in the expansion draft, traded Eberle for Ryan Strome, signed an absolute financial anchor in Milan Lucic, traded away Caggiula for the guy that broke McDavid's collarbone (who was later released), signed Koskinen to a very bloated extension as a reward for a one month stretch, massively overpaid for Draisaitl (he's good but ffs he's not worth THAT AAV), massively overpaid Oscar Klefbom, traded Petry to the Habs for draft capital, who proceeded to blossom into a top pairing defenseman, and with the McDavid contract, has all but fucked up the Oilers' cap situation.
    What's even worse? I probably missed some other bad apples along the way. It's that bad. Everyone should write off 2011 as a fluke. This man absolutely destroyed the Oilers. Even with the pieces they have in place, the Oilers have nowhere near the cap room to get pieces to help them, and Lucic will remain dead for years to come. Darnell Nurse will probably not resign, as will Nugent Hopkins. The Oilers will remain absolutely fucked in middling mediocrity at best. They will probably fail at tanking, since a team can only dip so low with guys like McDavid, Draisaitl, Nugent Hopkins and Nurse, but this team will need a serious stroke of luck to be serious playoff contenders. If fucking up a team was an art form, Chiarelli has all but painted the Mona Lisa.

    Sabres fan speaking, Okposo definitely had a lot of bad luck, his first season was very good, came with an all-star appearance, then the injuries started happening. While he was never really bad during those times he wasn’t great either, but again, injuries were a big contributor to that. Then when he finally started kicking the injuries, Ralph Krueger became head coach, and everyone, except Eichel and Reinhart, suffered offensively for it (Jeff Skinner was healthy scratched multiple times), then when Krueger was shown the door (FINALLY!), and Don Granato took over, everyone rebounded, including Okposo, he had a 21-goal season In Granato’s first year, had a 28-point season this previous season playing way less, and is now re-signed on a 1-year deal and still remains the captain. So while the signing didn’t exactly work out the way we were all hoping, Okposo is loved by the fans, he loves this team and city, and the good majority of people are happy that he’s still here

    Matt Martin is beloved by many Islanders fans and he's also beloved in that locker room. Lou traded for him two days after John Tavares left for Toronto in July 2018. When the Islanders played their first pre-season game in September 2018 he got a huge standing ovation during the pre-game introductions. He also does great work for many communities on Long Island. Lou gave him another four year contract (worth six million) to stay with the Islanders. The 2023-24 season is the last year of it. When he does eventually retire from hockey he will be missed by the fans and in the locker room. I believe he lives on Long Island year round and he had his two daughters here.

    Another guy you forgot to mention was Brett Connolly on the Capitals, dude was a literal afterthought and the caps took advantage and turned him into a solid 3rd line winger who averages 12 goals a year at a comfortable cap hit, and even though it was a trade Lars Eller, who turned into one of the best 3Cs in the NHL for the caps

      You can watch from streams easily. Around gametime just google that game you wanna watch and hit livestream end of it like for example "Blackhawks vs Bruins livestream". That opens up tons of good different & also save streams. I have cable now so i don't need streams, but younger when i was a teenager i used to watch all games from streams & i never got any virus or anything like that in to my computer.

    • @WoeIsLee
      @WoeIsLee 5 лет назад

      There needs to be a similar rule put in place like the nbas.
      Because with everyone throwing these contracts at players, it makes the few that are smart enough not to, not even stand a chance at signing them.
      And it also devalues your product with bums signed to such ridiculous contracts taking massive chunks of cap space from the teams they are on, thus it essentially takes away from the game itself and produces a lackluster skilled I wanna say product again but......Product.

    Can't wait to see the 2019 version. That class has some better signings, but the flops were even worse than 2016. Bob at 10 mil per, Skinner at 9 mil per, Duchene at 8 mil per, Karlsson at 11.5 mil per, Hayes at 7 mil per, Stralman at 5.5 mil per, Trouba at 8 mil per, and that's just some of the REALLY bad ones off the top of my head.

      Boldinbran as a blues fan it hurt reading this because history says many things. If we tear into the playoffs losing maybe only 5/6 games to the end of the season and make it to the conference finals at least, this one might hurt the most in the past 20 years besides 2015/16
