  • An amazing structure spanning the Ohio River. I have a model of it in N scale.... I haven't found a place for it on my layout yet because the scaled down version is 9 feet long.... 9 feet long in N scale. That just goes to show how massive this bridge really is! It is a marvel of engineering that needs to be remembered.

There's an old saying: they don't make em like that anymore. Needs a good coat of paint. Very nice.

She may almost be forgotten but she's been in the horizon for me for much of my life. She's a beauty. Heyyy, there's my house! 😂

Very nice production. Loved the aerial views of above and beside the bridge. We have the Huey P. Long bridge just up river from New Orleans in Jefferson Parish crossing the Mississippi River. It is a cantilever truss bridge and was completed in 1935. It holds some world records too, 790 feet longest span, around 2400 feet for the truss section, and almost 5 miles for the whole bridge. It also has two railroad lanes in the center and since the widening in 2013 three lanes of Hwy 90 in each direction.

If you like big bridges google it or check it out in the street view on google earth.

Wow that bridge is pretty old! It says it was completed in 1917. About 100 yrs old! Luckily the bridge didn’t collapse.

At the time it carried the largest live and dead load of any bridge in the world. Same designer as the Hells Gate bridge.

just got brought up on a modeling page and to most on the page it looks completely over engineered.

It isn't really an 'engineering marvel' despite it being an impressive structure. There was no risk involved in building this--it used standard technology of the day (steel, rivets, structural architecture). To engineers, this is called 'cookbook' engineering.

Too bad you can’t say that about a pissy little pedestrian bridge in Miami Fla. the “computer equipped engineers” screwed up so badly it collapsed before it even opened, killing several motorists! No, I’ll call this bridge a marvel of engineering!

I'm from Kentucky! That is a huge bridge! There is a huge bridge built for the Southern Railway in the 1800s called "Tyrone Trestle" by us locals that live near this huge bridge! It was last used in the 1980s and now is used as an Bungee Jumping Platform for a company out of California.
