  • Today I filmed this vintage EMD FP7 that was put back into service hauling freight for the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad. I chased it from Wisconsin up into upper Michigan, at one point a pickup truck ran out in front of it ignoring the flashing red signals and horn blowing. Overall it was a good chase with some great footage, I hope you love it!
    This EMD FP7 marked ELS 600 is a 1,500 horsepower (1,100 kW), B-B dual-service passenger and freight-hauling diesel locomotive produced in January 1951 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division and General Motors Diesel. It's currently owned by the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad but was previously owned by Wisconsin & Calumet, Wisconsin & Southern and Milwaukee Road.

    The EMD F-series locomotive is such an American classic railroad icon! So elegantly simple, clean and graceful -- beauties to behold, so easy to look at. Long may they roll!

      Yes I agree. One even saved a life recently when a person tryed to commit suicide by getting hit by a train. The train the person was hit by was being pulled by a f unit just like the one in the video and the skirt on the front push the person off to the side. If I have been a regular locomotive it would have pulled the person under and killed them.

    I knew her when she was the 96A. I was there when she came into the Janesville WI roundhouse for the first time. One of her Milwaukee Road heralds hangs in my basement stairwell. SO GLAD to see her running again !!!

    F-units hauling freight will always be more majestic then watching an ES44AC or any of the modern power hauling freight.

    Now I never thought I'd see the day that an old F-Unit was put back into full-time service and not just for excursions or static museum displays. This is definitely how these tough old bulldogs should be used.

    Watching from Ireland Jason where 18 GM 44 year old JT22CW locomotives are the powerhouse of our freight trains today. They were built in 1976 and powered intercity passenger trains at 90 mph for their first 30 years and continue to work on special occasions at that speed. They are all re-engined and refurbished by Irish Rail and in ex works condition. Keep up your great work and fascinating coverage from your home territory.

    This is wonderful!at last!one of them is still running!I REMEMBER when they first built them back in 1958.i was a young kid them .but I remember seeing these beauties in service when I went to Atlanta, georgia.there, Atlantic coast line had bought some of these locomotives from Emd now, I can hear the sound of this special girl in action, once again. I pray that they keep her healthy and in tiptop mechanical condition for a long time. What a beautiful locomotive she is.

    Oh, the whine of that loco in that last clip at 8:30 brought back childhood memories (60+ years ago). Those FP7's were used by Canadian Pacific in Montreal on the commuter trains to the west island. We lived close enough to the tracks to hear them pulling out of Westmount station, and my brother and I would often go down to the station just to watch the trains. Those were the days. Thanks.

    I grew up near Buffalo, N.Y. and seen a LOT of F and E units on a bunch of railroads, last one seen around 1978, man I sure miss seeing them, and of course I have many models of them, I'm 60 years old and what a beautiful sight to experience them in person...

    Damn that last pass with the hogger working the throttle.
    Sound of that normally asperated prime mover took me back to lying in bed in my boyhood home on a summer evening and hearing the last commuter trains of the day come off the power for for their station stop and then winding it out for the grade outside of town.

      @James Petrone former CNW " muscle line" Chicago to Twin Cities. Today the UP/Metra Northwest line at MP 25 from the bumper posts at Northwestern Station/ Ogilvie Transportation Center.
      Still live in town though the distant thrum of freight trains grinding up the grade out of the Desplaines River Valley outbound or climbing out of the Fox River Valley inbound ( both grades crested just west of town) no longer occurs as large swaths between Chicago and the Twin Cities are bike paths the last 30+ years and having moved over the years but there's still times if if the wind is right I can hear freight on CN's former Wisconsin Central/SOO Line to the east.

    Thanks for posting this. Those EMDs was the power, mixed with a few of the left over steamers, when I was a kid. Seeing this brings back the days when we lived three houses down from the T&P mainline and as kids all of us just had to watch every train that came by.

    Just watched the video and loved seeing the old FP7A unit at work. The Ontario Northland railway had 22 of the FP7A units and they used them in freight and passenger service. In 1978 they sold some of them to GO Transit in Toronto and the remainder stayed in service. They were the 1500 series units. Some of them were switched to the Northlander service and renumbered 1984 to 1987. They ran on this service until the 1990s where they were either scrapped or renumbered back into the 1500 series numbers (Originally it was 1500-1521). Three of the units were rebuilt with caterpiller engines and used in freight service only and numbered 2000-2002. They ran for a few years until finally retired. No units are in service currently, But they were awesome engines.

    I love those old American streamline locos and I'm watching from the UK!
    It looks to me like you guys use your railways the way we used to, for hauling freight. Best way to move big loads over long distances.

    Its actually really interesting seeing an FP7 in modern day looking so nice AND leading some hood units which would have come out years after that FP7 was made.

    Awesome vid Jason! ELS 600 in so frickin cool! That crossing runner was soooo close to disaster. Thankfully nothing happened and that pretty engine was not damaged. Mega horn blast!!

    Back in the late 50s I would go with my Grandma & grandpa t0 chaining from the Iron Rive area to pick up there friend coming up from Chicago !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember that type of engine !

    Its real nice to see an EMD FP7 hauling freight, especially railcars loaded with logs. I love the work and upgrade thats gone into it and that there are guys who like the early Fifties EMDs. Until now I thought i was the only one. All my life I lived close to railways. Right now I live close to a Canadian Pacific line here in London, province of Ontario, Canada(70 miles east of Port Huron Mi). I sure appreciate your video efforts.

    New Yorker here. Rumor has it the E&LS also still has the last surviving set of Delaware & Hudson BLW 'Sharks' locked up in a shed in one of their yards. Would be a real treat to see them running again.

    Great video, Jason. That is one beautiful and LOUD cab unit. Watching around 5.10 watch those cars rock and roll no wonder they have derailments. I think they travel too fast for the quality if the roadbed. Keep 'em coming, try to catch this one again.

    Nice to see a proper loco still at work! We have a few elderly locomotives that still run here in UK but they're mostly working on heritage lines. That guy in the pick up truck would never have known what hit him as they were really motoring across the crossing. Thanks for another great video. Looks like you had plenty of snow over there this winter.

    LAST I SAW ONE OF THEM I WAS 5 YEARS OLD ON THE GREAT NORTHERN FROM NY TO GRENORA N.D.. THAT WAS 65 YEARS AGO. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE SLEEPER CAR AND DINING CAR. ON A BIG CURVE I COULD SEE THE ENGINES. I STILL HAVE THE MENU CARDS AND LIST OF STOPS. AT THE END MY MOM GAVE THE PORTER A $5.00 TIP. WOW!!

    Vintage Diesels are really the only Diesels that do anything for me. Wish EMD and GE would bring carbody style Locomotives back. Modern Motive power is either boring to look at or is ugly as sin. Great video, love the horn!

    Beautiful Video. In the 1970's, I used to work on E8's and FL-9's. Beautiful locomotives back then! Lots of metal! Thanks! This brought back a lot of memories like setting transition points, etc. Didn't have HEP back then, there were steam boilers in the back. Don't worry about the moron in the pickup truck, he's just an accident going somewhere to happen.

    Let's see ,The last time I saw the engine was in the 50's when it was on the Milwaukee road as the Hiawatha going from Chicago to California. I lived in Chicago Montclare area which was around Grand ave and Harlem and the train would fly by at a high rate of speed ! Steam locomotives were slowly being phased out the train was going so fast you didn't want to stand close because it would suck you in !Hello from Mchenry Illinois !

    Fantastic video. Had to hit the thumbs up AND the subscribe button because of this video.
    A proper F unit horn sounds like a tug boat horn. Why do I say that? Because my childhood was spent growing up next to the CGW in a suburb of Chi. with F units running by all the time until the CNW took over in 1968 but...who cares....seeing an F unit running in 2020?! is fantastic!
    As for that errant driver.....there's a saying I like - "you can't fix stupid"😕

      Jerry Long I remember the F units from my childhood and many of them did have horns with that bassy sounding tugboat horn, but then others sounded more like the horn of the engine in this video.

    That was a great video. The EMD F-series will always be my first thought of what a diesel was in the golden age of railroading.. That was the time when people came to the depot for the twice weekly local for their LCL freight. My home state of Iowa has lost almost 80% of its railroad tracks, ripped up forever. In the 1930's to 1950's, there were very few places in Iowa that were more that 7 miles from an railroad agency station, Now there exists whole blocks of counties with no railroad service. NE Nebraska, NW Missouri and SW Wisconsin are even worse, The railroad companies no longer want to service industries and have made sure they dried up their business through poor customer service and poor erratic delivery. It makes me sad every time I see an abandoned grade and think about what used to be.

    Pretty cool seeing the old Conrail locomotive too. And it looked like those were ex Penn Central box cars at the end of train. That was cool looking old locomotive pushing through the snow. I live in upstate NY and we don't have nearly as much snow as you guys do.

    Looks a lot like the trainset I had as a kid in the 70s cept mine were the warbonnet style pain scheme. Had a blue one and a red one. I recall it looked like this though a good bit and had vents at the top. Was a HO or O scale Lionel. Had the 3 track type.

      Primarily efficiency. Newer ones are more powerful and more efficient and and pull more.

    From what I can tell 6 are still operational in Australia. The GM class and the S class. There are a lot stored in decent condition as well.
