    Great instructional video.
I had anxiety riding an XR650 (leaking fuel) back (across desert) for a friend thinking if it died, I'd never get it started. It died on its own and after taking a water break, I readied myself for battle. Couple strokes on decomp until TDC, click past and an easy boot it fired up. I had never been happier. Thanks for clarifying this. Been stuck with starting my 450exc on a hot summer day......but that's another story.

My very first bike was an XR600................and it was WAY before the innerwebs and great instructors like YOU. I think my right leg is still a little bigger decades later! I also learned that if I didn't ride for more than a week, it helped to drain the float bowl before I started my kicking frenzy.

Brings back memories of my YZ400f. Easy to start if you did it right. There was the occasional kick back that was like starting a cold 2 stroke 500. I learned to always wear solid shoes when kick staring a four stroke with manual decompression and never kick half heartedly. It’s kind of sad many people today don’t know what we went through to kick start a bike. Especially one of those bikes that has been sitting around for a while and needs a tune up. Keep on kickin’.

So my right knee needed replacement do to a injury and I fought it for a long time. The result was I couldn't kick a kicker bike for about a year. So that meant no 650R KDX220 or my CRM250R to say I was bummed was an understatement. I finally decided to not be defeated and learned how to kick with my left foot. In the process I found the 650R easier to start left footed off the bike. That last 4 inches of stroke under the footpeg is the important part of the process. It's the same process as the 600r and make sure the kickstand is down or you will take the dreaded off balance fall to the outside if she gets away from you. I got a total knee replacement and it's amazing now! I was showing my oldest daughter how to start it and even figured out I can hand start it! She is 6'1" so it was pretty easy for her to get it too.

Went riding at Brown Mountain in NC and every time we took a break I had to start it for him even after several times of showing him how. Finally I told him I could start it with my hand. He called B.S. Told him bet you 20 Dollars and he jumped on it. He lost his 20 Dollars. Never cold but after warmed up I could start all of them with my hand. Sweet Bikes.

When he showed my how to start it, I got the impression that he didn't have the slightest idea. He swung blindly at it for about 10 kicks before he was dripping with sweat and gave up. 20 years ago, I had both a 1977 TT500 and a 1984 TT600. My girlfriend always wanted to ride them, but she wasn't able to start them. I never had a problem with either. The TT500 had the de-compression lever, but the TT600 had automatic de-compression. The thing that I always taught was to 'kick with a follow-thru', kinda like the way a golfer swings his club. Most people try to start these bikes with a quick kick, but that seldom ever works. A nice slow kick with follow-thru does it first time, every time. I love the sound of these bikes. They make a thump, thump, thump sound. Lots of bottom end torque for hill climbing. The only time that I ever had an issue with these bikes was trying to make my way thru a 'clear cut' forest with all the tree stumps and debris in my way. My brother had a trials bike with much better low end torque and he could run circles around me in all that debris. Last year, I bought another TT600 that came with a spare engine and transmission for parts. I got the bike for $500 but the plastic gas tank is completely rotted out and breaking apart. The new tanks are very expensive, so I'll have to figure out a more economical way to solve the problem. I have a 'hot air' plastic welder, so I might attempt to make my own tank.

Exactly how I start my 95 XR600R, and my 86 XR600R. The 85-87 do not have the anti kickback mechanism on the cam, and when they kickback, WOW!

What other bikes are there in this 600 type range? I remember a neighbour had one when I was a kid but I can’t figure out what it’s called.

Great information. I’m in the process of buying a 1998 Honda XR400, does this apply to that bike as well? And should I get it re-geared for Highway riding? Thanks for the video. 🤙

You have an 88 xr600 we gotta see that bad boy! 😁 There's a starting procidure to my 660 which has the Kickstarter on the left side funny enough and you hear the same problems that they're "impossible to start" but it's the same as yours piece of cake 👌

My xr250R was very similar except before starting you would rotate the thumb idle screw about 3/4 a turn to bump the idle up. Then after it warms up you turn it back down. However, if the bike was hot and you shut it off. God help you. You get one or two chances to do it right and if you miss it then you will be kicking and cussing at the same time. That bike was "For Sale" so many times in my head but every time she fired up she was your sweatheart.
