John Deacon was not only an underrated songwriter, but he was one of the most solid bass players in rock. And he and Roger Taylor were in complete lockstep, which you can hear on any live Queen recording. Mr. Deacon is a tremendously talented guy.

Solid, John Enthwistle said that! But, JD was that type of musician that you need when you want to mould songs. We musicians say: The bass is king! And that was JD's role in Queen! A very, very good bass player, who knew his craftsmanship like no other in Rock! He once said: breaks are music! That's exactly it! One has to be a super musician to put breaks there where they are needed. Even if it is just a 16th note break. Try are essentials! Hands down for JD. For me, Rock's best bass player!

I think Freddie always took John under his wing & encouraged him to write more songs, he never thought he would be in a rock band for 12 years, he was also raising six children, so he had a big responsibility to his family, when Freddie died, I think he believed Queen wasn't the same anymore, so he walked away from the limelight, I admire John so much for doing what he thought was right, yes, John, we miss Freddie too, as his fans, but your music lives on in our hearts. A quiet man who has written some of the most listened to songs in music history along with some fantastic bass lines. If Brian and Roger ever said they were going to do one more tour and end Queen concerts it would be a sell out. I hope that people understand that John not being involved in the current Queen group has nothing to do with his dissatisfaction with Roger and Brian, or Brian and Roger's dissatisfaction with him. They actually wanted him in the group that toured and recorded with Paul Rodgers, He just didn't want to do it anymore, and again, it has nothing to do with his displeasure with the other Queen guys wanting to continue w/out Freddie. Anyone who says that John is the man with integrity is full of B.S., because his decision to not be involved had nothing to do with a fear that he would be looked like as an ass if he toured without Freddie. As Roger says in the Classic Rock albums DVD on "A Night At the Opera," John approves of what they are doing without him. He is just an extremely rare rock star like Neil Peart from Rush: a complete introvert who doesn't possess a Type A personality. He doesn't like being famous, and is uncomfortable, in the words of Roger Taylor, with "meeting new people." Being an introvert myself, I totally understand his perspective. He views his bass playing as being no different than being a car mechanic or a janitor. IT IS A JOB. Unfortunately, people expect their rock stars to be Type A guys, and most extroverts are incapable of understanding introverts, whereas introverts understand extroverts. As Carl Jung said, introverts are just as capable of happiness as extroverts. John is happy living his life alone with his family away from the music industry. Most people who retire from jobs don't find themselves doing their old profession as a hobby. They move on to different stuff. This guy has a masters in mechanical engineering. It's not like music is all he knows.

@@Nina-oi1qk - They also neglected Deaky's early help as their sound tech and invention of the amp used by Brian to create Brian's and Queen's unique sound that helped make them famous. Deaky was quiet but charming, very smart and almost always laughing in photos. A great dancer too. :)
He wrote over a dozen great songs, many of my favorites, and wrote even more with Freddie. "You're my Best Friend" was one of their earliest BIG hits and "Another one Bites the Dust" second only to Bohemian Rhapsody and it charted in every genre, rock, soul, disco, black, R&B, R&R. His bass lines were iconic, especially "Under Pressure".
Freddie was made to look arrogant and wanting to go solo when in fact Roger and Brian did solo projects. I also can't envision Freddie cutting down the other members by saying things like "Deaky, nothing comes to mind". Freddie and Deaky shared similar personalities (although Freddie covered his with his stage persona) and musical tastes and Freddie often pushed Deacon to write and to get his songs on albums against some protests by Brian and Roger.
The time line of events was absurd.
The band and others said it was often Brian and Roger who fought.
They both refused to play some of Deaky and Freddie's funky stuff because they didn't like it. Maybe a little jealousy. For that reason Deaky played guitar, bass and percussion on Cool Cat.
Of course Freddie can't defend himself and Deaky likely never will.

Deaky was so very close to Freddie ! May be he was his best friend. I can understand his decision to retire from QUEEN and take care of his big family. Anyway John Deacon knew that QUEEN was over when Freddie was gone. He was very depressed and sad. I'm agree with you Sir Deacon. Without Freddie I can't stand earing other singer but Freddie. Because NOBODY can replace him. You understood. All my respects and best wishes for you. Friendly from France. A true fan of the real QUEEN. Sorry for my bad english

Of course we all know that Queen will never be the same, but I'm glad Roger and Brian have found a way to keep doing what they love, making music and making people happy.

God, I love this song! I simply adore Queen. If I had to rank my favorite songwriters from Queen from 1 to 4, it would be:
    1. Freddie - My favorite!
    2. John - He comes in a close 2nd. I just love Deacy's soulful taste & he brought such a unique quality to the Queen's records.
    3. Brian & Roger - While their songs aren't my "favorites," I do still love them! I just feel that Freddie & John wrote the best melodies!

I love seeing them playing each other's instruments ! Four geniuses in one band. One day, I was driving 2 of my granddaughters, and they asked if it was Queen on the radio. I said that it was and how did they know that. The 9 year old says it's because of the drummer! Proud grandma right here! I loved Queen being on the speakers in our gym, playing "We are the champions " just as we were winning a basketball game and stomping our feet and clapping to "We will rock you"

This song make me look at John Deacon. Even though it's not mentioned in this clip, the brilliant, soaring bass lines in it made me want to be a bass player. I then found out I was a better guitarist than bass player (more a follower than a leader). Then I found out I was a better songwriter than guitarist, as well as a better manager and producer, and I made a heck of a living out of telling people who wanted know how to be a good live band to go look at Queen at Live Aid, and when you think you can do half of that, come back and talk to me. And my kids grew up in and loved music and are now in the industry too. Yet now, the bass line in it I appreciate more than ever because it's not backline- it IS fundamental to the song. John, on the very unlikely chance you ever read this- I owe you a beer and a huge thank you.

John seems to be a man of great integrity, and that might contribute to his absence from the current offering.
I understand the nostalgic part of the show. But for John and many others, there is just no replacing Freddie Mercury. Nothing will ever approach that level, so let it rest. I get it.

    • @blackmore4

Then again, I can well imagine decent Queen tribute bands drawing crowds long after the remaining members have all passed away. But now, while of course there's no replacing Mercury, being able to see two of the original members playing those songs is still more than worthwhile.
