    Learn CONCEPT ART from RE4 Remake - Pro Artist Analysis
    Students of concept art should be studying concept art of existing games. Taking an analytical view of the process, HOW and WHY the images were created in this way is very revealing, and gives a clearer look at what YOU should have in your concept art portfolio.

    Can we get a video on how to study rendering? Quick and dirty rendering for concept art that is, which gets the form across without ending in a fully fleshed out illustration.

    It gives me a massive amount of relief and a chuckle to know that there's triple A studios out there that don't require concept artist to put a lot of details and different views on their canvas. Don't get me wrong I love hyper detailed concepts in films and games, but to know that it's okay to be "loose and gestural" in your work helps relieve some of the anxiety.

    I love this break down by you Trent, as someone who also works as a concept artist in the industry I feel like a lot of teams in Japan especially at a company like Capcom have been working together for decades. Like you said, they know exactly what the very talented 3d people need to get started on the idea and they have the skills and the competence to take it to that juicy RE engine level. There is also probably a decent amount of art direction/paintovers from the concept artist as the 3d artist takes it towards the final. I remember seeing metal gear solid concept art as a kid and thinking that was what concept art was, very loose inky brush strokes and implied lines. Definitely not the case in America or Europe lol. Any concept I turned in that didn't have loads of detail sometimes required a lot of feedback for some artists and for others a really lose sketch was enough for them to take it all the way to an amazing level that hardly resembled the concept by the end outside of the core idea / colors. Great video and it was cool to see these production concepts!

      @@zedc6072 That's awesome! Idk if this is the best route because there isn't really a total focus on concept art, there are only a few classes about concept art here, but I am actually at a traditional university that offers a degree in games (yes I am extremely #blessed :)). It may not be the best path for artists, I am not sure because you have to focus on other classes besides art which take a big chunk of time away from practice. Plus I just signed up for next semester and they seemed to have scrubbed many of the concept art classes out of the schedule :(. They still offer traditional art courses though. I guess researching the school and classes it offers and the success rate of concept artist graduates is important and I also know there are plenty of alternative ways to learn. Hope this helps comment helps!

    When I first watched the RE4 remake concepts, I absolutely fell in love with only creating necessary concepts/sketches that fill the answers to the problems. I think this approach should be the industry standard instead of having concept artists create fully rendered illustrations that are better used for a magazine cover and box art than problem-solving. the quality of the game proves this approach is both possible and more affordable. I believe this topic should be talked about more frequently by pro artists like you.
    by the way, if you look at other Capcom game concepts such as devil may cry 5 and resident evil 2 remake, you will see the exact same approach as RE4 remake.
    Thank you for the great vid. I hope this will become a wake-up call for a lot of companies.

    Hi. I have some ideas why the concept of the lake monster is loose. My theory is they know the style they want. So the technical artists and 3D have to find an optimal solution for the tentacles and things to animate. It is expensive for games a character to have several bones, skin weight, and so on. If they have a better rendering of the concept, but the final 3D is different, some nonartists in charge can be confused.

    Yeah, Capcom character concept art are tend to be very loose and not fully rendered. But if we look at their weapon and armor designs, it's very detailed and really push their creativity on it, though still isn't fully rendered, most of them were just linearts. I feel it is quite a good thing to do because the harsh truth is that; Gamers (who isn't an artist) do not really care about concept art. Though I'm surprised that the newer artbooks from Capcom doesn't have much notes or conversation with designers unlike their older artbooks like DMC1,2,3,4 because their designer team conversation were quite interesting, you could understand the way they think when making the concept. Maybe if there is Japanese version, they probably talk and show a lot more of their work.

    I recommend if anyone wants to make a game to just decompile a Unity game or something made in C#. Just cause the language is rather easy to reverse engineer and rebuild back into Unity or just see the source code and how scripts connect/interact with each other.
    Side note: How often do you get scam-y looking emails for jobs? I still send "portfolio" to places but sometimes I'm unsure if its actually from the companies internal server or not asking to DL some stuff to confirm my portfolio or other times I found it was someone hosting multiple links for a phishing scam. Either way I tend to ignore since my resume is still basically, "Uh, can I take an art test?"

      Taking a look at the views on the discord challenge videos I think gives us the answer. The amount of time they take to put together isn't worth the amount of return back from them. Essentially, they're not profitable. So it's better to put your finite resources of time and energy into videos that more people watch, grow your brand more, make more money, and that are more helpful for more artists.

    Honestly, I feel like your perspective of the Western AAA developers shows the downfalls of those studios. It feels like there’s a point of diminishing returns when it comes to concept art and they tend to go way past it, and it bloats the cost of the game. Meanwhile, these pieces seem to be much more economical with the time of the artists and devs, because they’re ok with that more bare minimum communication. And it gets results! See how many games Capcom has put out in the past 5 years versus EA? You can start to see why by looking at the concept art.
    Maybe i’m just projecting my dislike of Western AAA devs though, lol

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  Год назад

      I had felt that way since I started making games. But its based on the demands of the customer. The general public will ALWAYS click on the highly painted/rendered stuff. They imagine that it's "better" because more time went into it, regardless of whether it was actually useful to the development of the project.

    • @AliHamza-sv4ni
      @AliHamza-sv4ni Год назад

      @@TrentKaniuga i would imagine most people buying the game wouldn't exactly be focusing that much on the concept art and instead be focusing on the game. Only a very niche group is actually into concept art and a good chunk of them are other artists . So it's kinda counter productive to increase production time with excessive rendering when it's not really helping the sales of the game or something.
