    There's nothing quite as disconcerting as the sudden silence when one's engine decides to take a break. But - there's nothing quite as magical and calming to the soul as cruising at sunset with views of the sky and wildlife as the world settles in for the evening. What a wonderful journey. Yes only had two break downs in 16 years, one was overheating in the same conditions and the other was water in the diesel, that was problematic in the middle of nowhere, eventually got a tow from another reluctant wide beam to a marina, it was the Lazy Otter narrow boats ran away as fast as they could, luckily at the marina I was able to get a chap to come out and empty treat and put my fuel back after the water was removed. Several days stranded and the bit were I was drifting down the old west river with no power was a little disconcerting. All is well that ends well though.

    Hi Vanessa, What a lovely cafe you stopped out, my mouth was watering when I saw the delicious looking vegan cakes. What a horrible experience it is when your boat engine suddenly stops on the river. It was lucky that you weren’t on a fast flowing river at the time. I’ve never seen so much duck weed and blanket weed as there are on the rivers and canals this year. We’ve had a similar problem with our boat engine twice this year because of the weed, luckily both times we’ve been near our marina when our engine has suddenly stopped! What amazing wildlife again and that sunset was picture perfect. Amazing journaling as always, you’re so talented. Take care, Mr and Mrs Mindful and Zephyr.xxxxx

    I love watching geese fly, if I hear some I always go outside and watch them. They never let any group member fall behind, if one is lagging others will fall back to keep them company. Thank you for inviting me along to sit with the swallow. Are many of the rivers and canals getting more weed? Possibly the hot weather has impacted on the growth? Take care and have a great week. =-)

      I love that fact about geese, Lorraine👍⭐️ and that no, single goose gets left behind. Just from watching them from the bird hide, I noticed how the ones on the outside, seem to side flip before readjusting and then landing; it was quite magnificent to watch and I'm sure there is a reason for that too, but I'm not sure? I will look back over the footage again and see if there is a pattern. I love that about observing nature, you discover things firsthand that make you wonder. Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about the weed. The River Witham has always been notorious for weed and I think that is because the land is so flat and is drained into the river so the farmers' fertilisers are washed into it. This also happened on the Middle Levels and we got stuck in Ramsey with the same issue. I think the other canals and rivers have been fine, that I am aware of. The hot weather probably does make the duckweed multiply more quickly too. Take care 👍🌻🦋

    Hello Vanessa - greetings from Poland
    So we say goodbye to Boston and the River Witham. I've never seen so much weed. A great description - "like cruising through mushy peas". Why is there so much weed?
    The Dinky Green Kitchen was spectacular. What a lovely array of delicious things to eat. And the bird life was incredible.
    Then catastrophe - broken engine. I'm so pleased you and Michael managed to get Alice Grace restarted and safely moored at Fiskerton Fen.
    What a gorgeous sunset. Fabulous light as you cruised along. A willow warbler, fly catcher and the swallow on its' nest. Brilliant photography, a superb commentary and a fantastic video. To cap it all, one of your best poems and a gaggle of geese.
    Thanks so much for taking me along with you. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

    As you slowly pointed into the setting sun, I found myself a little sad. The passing of another day, one for the remembrance, or the calling back of times gone by. I remember the sounds of Canadian geese making their sound as they slowly landed on a forgotten pond. The sounds of birds I once heard so clear, the passing of time brings a tear. The dreams I had so long ago, now with age, there is nothing to show. But alas another setting sun, reminds me of past days of joy and fun. May you enjoy many setting sun's, may you always keep an interest in the wonderful world that surrounds you. And may you never take it for granted. Sunsets mark the passing of time.

    ok 14 mins into it... Your camera's color rendition is MILES ahead of any other narrowboat video. No one else has this technology you possess in that camera you use.

    Glad your engine restarted. I would check the fuel system, you may have a restriction, tank vent, partially blocked filter/s , kinked fuel line etc, which has shown up an impending fault because you have been working the engine hard( which is good for it) that will not happen at lower rpm , until the restriction gets worse. I work on diesels and it is quite a common fault where they die at full throttle but will restart and run at lower revs. Beautiful filming as usual.

    My goodness, that amount of duck weed is disturbing. Is anything being done to clear it? That tiny weed clearing boat doesn't look up to the job! I would have thought the weed is detrimental to the health of the river, blocking out all the sunlight from aquatic life. Not good for narrowboat engines either apparently! Good girl Alice Grace, you did sterling work ploughing your way through that soup. The little canal-side cafe looks just my cup of tea - what a little gem and scumptious food. Thanks for the best 25 mins I have spent today. I don't know much about narrow boats but I have seen something called a weed hatch that you open when your prop gets fouled by weeds and stuff. With all the much you went through on this voyage I wondered if you had to open yours? I am happy to tell you that my wife finally tested negative for Covid yesterday and it looks as though I got lucky and did not catch it. I need to take a lesson from you about keeping a positive attitude. As far a birds go you have a way of filming them that is amazing. There are still a shortage of crows around here. I do wish they would come back. We do have Cormorants down by the lake and they are so interesting to watch. I love the way they spread their wings to dry them out. Thanks again for another great trip Steve

      Margaret, what a lovely comment! Thank you so much🤗 The weed is caused when the fertilisers from the farmers' fields is washed into the river and it causes the duckweed and azolla to multiply like crazy. I was reading that is absorbs carbon from the atmosphere which is good and can be used as a biofuel which would be super, if that could happen, but it is not good for the fish as they need oxygen and it hinders this. Thank you once again for such kindness and I am so glad that you like the daisy. Have a wonderful weekend. Take care🌻🦋

    Visiting my friend on the barrier island. Plum island off the coast of Newburyport Massachusetts there is a many miles long ( for the width of most barrier islands are not much more than a 1/4 mile if that) stretch exempt from the multi million dollar homes that account for the rest of the island. This area is called the Rachel Carlson wildlife refuge. On a few walks I was amused to see the fussing and positioning of oddly clad people. All clutching binoculars or long lenses of some sort. Reading the islands little weekly that evening I found it just as amusing to read the names of the various species these folk were clamoring to view. Now years later... and with help from you my appreciation of our winged friends is immense. While I still get the chuckle from a new name for a species that hasn't been seen in ages or rarely seen...I do take this beauty seriously. My donations I'm sure seem paltry to some but I do what I can for the Rachel Carlson wildlife refuge... winded I am lol . But was wondering if you ever heard of this wonderful naturalist miss Carlson. For the land she managed to secure for wildlife would be close to a billion if ever developed.

    Wow Vanessa what a journey bless you. Lovely vlog as usual you are so calm when things go wrong. Loads of wildlife. Does that weed give you much trouble apart from steering through it? Is there more off it this year because of such hot weather? Well hope you have a calmer week!!!! Here’s to next week 👍

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  2 года назад +1

      Hi Sandy, thank you for your lovely comment. Several boaters have told me that the weed was worse last year as the rain helps wash the fertiliser from the fields into the river and we had warm but wet conditions last summer. I do think though that the heat helps it to multiply. Apart from the steering and making the engine work extra hard, the weed isn't that much of a problem for narrowboats, but it is for cruisers. Have a wonderful weekend. Take care🦋🌻

    I find it sad that I don't see the birds I used to in my youth...(50+ yrs ago) Curlews, Plovers, Sand Martins where I used to fish, House Martins, Swallows and swifts etc etc. Thankfully I'm starting to see Kites and Buzzards again though... This is up norf!!! The occasional curlew has started to appear in my local fields... the call just reminds me of my carefree childhood. I just wish I could convince the Mrs about the narrowboat life, we have several friends that enjoy it, but NOOOO!!! not a chance unfortunately.

      It is sad when you no longer see birds that you used to see regularly in your skies and fields. Perhaps there are projects where you live to reintroduce wetlands and reedbeds? This really helped with the birdlife at Fiskerton Fen. In terms of convincing your wife to take on the narrowboat life, have you tried narrowboat holidays as a taster, but on a quiet and beautiful canal or river? Or have you thought about buying a Wilderness Boat which you can drive to any stretch of water and cruise for lots of breaks away? I hope you both find a way to find what you are looking for. Good luck, take care and have a wonderful weekend.🦋🌻

    QUESTION: In your narrowboat travels, can you suggest your favourite bits of canal where the forest canopy meets overhead, creating something like a natural cathedral effect? Incidentally, I watch all your vblogs with great enjoyment from here on the Atlantic coast of New Brunswick, Canada. I delight in your nature drawings and journal keeping.

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  2 года назад +3

      Hi Tom, that is a very good question and I am now deep in thought about the forest canopies of my travels so far. I distinctly remember the Ashby canal has a couple of those cuttings where the trees create a cathedral affect and then Kinver on the Staffs and Worcestershire canal took my breath away with its stunning trees and landscape. And then, more recently at Drakeholes on the Chesterfield canal there is a short stretch of forest canopy. I know there are more, but I need to sit and think about it for longer. I am so glad that you enjoy the vlogs and thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a wonderful weekend. Take care🦋🌻 Just remembered Chirk on the Llangollen and The Shropshire Union is a super canal for Forest canopies! Still thinking...

    I have the same engine vetus m417 you may find it was air locked and when it got hot it blew the water out of the plastic expansion bottle may be worth checking. follow pipe from bottom of bottle to top of engine this is were you slacken 14mm bolt to let the air out until water comes out .but may be worth removing to check the 2 vent holes in the bolt as mine was partly blocked.dont lose the 2 copper washers.mine as done this when air locked.

      When you try and slacken bolt the pipe and union might try and turn as well if stuck together with paint .if so loosen jubilee clip and remove rubber hose lift up to stop water coming out .remove bolt as one if stuck together. If it is stuck with paint remove place on wood so as to not damage the threads and put a socket over bolt tap down with hammer to separate bolt from union .as I said before mine was partly blocked. The bolt is a air vent and water expansion fitting. All the best

It looked pretty horrid actually- like sailing through pea soup - and does it harm the water birds? What if Zeph falls in..will it harm her? Another fab video, Vanessa. Thank You. They think the weed is caused by farms wash off of fertilisers into the water system and what with the heat; it causes a perfect environment for this weed to reproduce. It could be used to make eco-friendly fuel and some duck weeds and azolla weeds are edible too!Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Take care 🌻🦋

    Hi Vanessa. Lovely vlog. I got to thinking if there is any good use from duckweed. People are beginning to eat it in different forms and use it it animal feed and as plant compost. Unless you have hairy arms and legs, Hitch has been revealed once again. We're wondering if your recent engine failures have anything to do with your new fuel?

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  2 года назад +1

      Hi John, there are definitely uses for this weed like animal feed and bio fuel. The duckweed that we have here is considered large duckweed and has a pink underside which means it’s not edible for humans but there are duckweeds that are and I read that they are one of the healthiest foods you can eat! So you are right, this weed could be recycled and put to excellent use. Also you mention the HVO and linking it to the engine issue, this is something that went through my mind too, and the answer is, we’re really not sure yet without some more investigation. The previous issue with the prop shaft is unrelated though and we have had that issue in the past before too. Robin and Daniel have offered some excellent engine advice which we will take to test for blockages. Never a dull moment with a boat though!😂 Thank you for your lovely comment. Have a wonderful weekend. All the best to the both of you🦋🌻

      Vegetation - or locks - or towpaths - or breaches - or moorings? A finite amount of money ÷ all the multitudinous things needing to be unexpectantly put right. The hotter than normal weather has made the weeds worse than normal this year.

    • @themindfulnarrowboat
      @themindfulnarrowboat  2 года назад +2

      It is a tricky one isn't it? It makes sense to me that here we have a huge amount of weed which can be used to make bio fuel which we could all be running our engines on. There must be a company out there willing to take the stuff away in order to recycle it like that? I think I will start making a few enquiries about it. Thank you so much for watching.
