My dad once built a water bath for the birds on our front fence, and there was this crow that used to bring his bread around, and soften it by dropping it it the bird bath. My dear old dad would tell everybody down the pub about it, and say over and over what smart birds crows were!!

Fabuluous as ever... thank you so much for taking me back to the canals. I grew up alongside the semi-derelict east Manchester canals.....The industrial, nasty, canals.. people wanted them filled in as they were rat-runs.... full of dead dogs and rubbish....(as a kid I pulled a few out and gave them a decent burial.) Now of course the site of "desirable properties"....for those with too much money... (?) (Whoa: Hardly Venice, is it?) The shortsightedness of the councils at the time beggars belief. They allowed developers to concrete over sections. Now, in Stalybridge, for example...the canal is restored and is an essential part of that small towns history. To see the canals you visit is a real treat for me....helps erase the horrors of what went on in Manchester and its surrounding areas with the canals in the 1960's & 70's. Your appreciation of nature is a real tonic. Your dog is brilliant too! I am glued to every video you post..... out here in South America.....Taking me back to my love of British Canals. Take Care.

I get a feeling of excitement when I see you’ve uploaded a new video. The sky is so blue for the time of the year, I notice your garden at the front of the boat is still looking nice. Absolutely beautiful footage of a really pretty part of the canal network. It’s been a great year for mushrooms, they are growing in my lawn as well as at the side of the towpath. Those crocheted poppies were beautiful someone has spent a lot of time making them. I always feel like I’ve learned something interesting when I’ve watched your vlog. I loved the Postman Pat statue, how interesting that there is no information linking him to Welford. Your food made me feel hungry it looked so colourful and tasty. I just love the intimacy of canals like the Welford Arm, nestled into the countryside. Lovely shot of the buzzard. I've never seen some of the bird you show (I'm in southern England), but it nice to be able to recognise them, for if I ever do.

Very similar day here. We had a "high" of 31F, overcast and damp from yesterday's rain. I made a huge pot of 15 bean and ham soup which I'll be sharing with family this weekend. Perfect thing while watching your lovely video. I do enjoy the fungus you identify, in spite of the fact that I won't eat mushrooms. They are strangely beautiful and fascinating to look at. I also enjoy the art you create for your journal. Well done!

Thanks Vanessa for another voyage on the Allice Grace. I agree that a Murder of crows is sort of a harsh name. I want to tell you another story that might explain why I am attached to the crows around here. My wife told me about a crow that she adopted and named Smoky he had a broken wing so her and her brothers nursed him a backed to health and they kept him for a few months. He became sort of a pet to her and her brothers for a few months or so I think it is so great when you can help natures creatures that way. I learned a lot about mushrooms today. I thank you again for the best 20 mins of my Friday. I have been spending a lot of time on TicTok lately it's mostly to do with politics I am so happy that our mid term elections are over. Now I can go back to my favorite things which are peoples pet's You know what I found a lot of people have pet Owls! it was so cool to see their owl's do all sorts of tricks. It looked a little cold for Zeph to go swimming hope he enjoyed it. Looking forward again to next Friday's adventure Steve

Your wife's story about the crow is beautiful, especially that it was nursed back to good health and released back into the wild. I used to think that it might be too cold for Zephyr to swim, but then I read that the Labrador breed is originally part Canadian water dog that swam in freezing waters to retrieve fishing nets and fish for fishermen. I love all of your information on the birds, plants and fungi, etc. but where do you source all of your knowledge ??! We have just bought our narrowboat, and ventured out in it for the first time on Saturday (nail-biting for me, but not my hubby apparently!) we will be out properly next year after our retirement in December. Anyhow, I digress ! Can you recommend any books that would be helpful in identifying the wildlife and plant life so that when we are cruising i will have a reference book. Recently a viewer recommended a book called Food for Free by Richard Mabey which I am ordering for Christmas. Hi Vanessa: I've never seen a Fieldfare before. We have Redwing Blackbirds in the Pacific NW of the USA as well as other places, but not the "Redwing" that's in the UK. Beautiful birds! The Fieldfare sort of reminds me of a Northern Flicker but smaller. Love your illustrations and poetry. Jenny :o)

I am in awe of your both your knowledge and power to observe the beauty around you. Loved Zephyr doing labrador things. I guess there is a process to go through getting her back inside. As I recall I could my house with Labrador hair. It's such a joy to watch your videos - they must take days to produce because the editing is so good. It's so strange but where I live in the southern hemisphere it's been the same weather!! Cold and very wet.

There is a process for getting Zephyr back in the boat which is hectic!😆 It is made easier by having the pramhood at the back of the boat and there is loads of Labrador hair! Hi Magnus, I am glad that you liked the addition of the map at the beginning. I will try and include this in all of my vlogs now. 👍 The speed we go varies, depending on where we are: going past moored boats is tick over speed which is about 2mph; on canals we normally cruise at 3mph and on rivers 4mph. My mother used to make a delicious gooey chocolate, raisin and biscuit delight which we called 'Sludge' and a chocolate mousse we called 'Gumboot Pudding'!

I have recently bought "Mushrooms" by Roger Philips which is a great book if you want to forage mushrooms, also I have "The Forager's Calendar" which lists what is edible throughout the year. "Finding the Mother Tree" is a good book about the relationship trees have with fungus and other trees around them. My absolute favourite book is "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" by Edith Holden and then I also have "Nature Notes" and her biography "The Edwardian Lady" which I love. Hi Mark, thanks for this other message. It is so kind of you to ask me about my poems. At the end of this year, I am going to print off copies of my journal and make them into little books and also I am making a calendar of favourite nature/mooring/ poems over the previous years since living aboard. Lovely vlog as usual Vanessa, how hard do you have to search to find so many different fungi? I’ve never seen a field fare before. They are quite striking, are they part of the thrush family? I have to pick my daughter up from Northampton tomorrow and was thinking of walking the Welford arm from Foxton. That was until I saw the sign post with 7 miles to Foxton on it 😂

As for walking from Foxton to the end of the Welford Arm, that is quite a walk, but what a pretty one it would be. I thought I was being rather causal about the trouble with the engine on the Alice Grace in my last comment. Sorry for not taking it more serious. I hope it is getting fixed now if not I will really miss you next Friday. I also wanted to share something I saw last week on the Foxes Afloat page about a European Eagle Owl that they got from a rescue center I thought it was really nice of them to build a place for it to stay. |They said they can not turn it lose since it was not native to the UK something I don’t quite understand. Hi Steve, you are so kind to be thinking of us with our engine- I have an update in this Friday's vlog. In terms of offering an opinion about the European Eagle Owl, it is not a simple answer. I think that what the Foxes are doing is commendable as that beautiful creature would not survive in the wild now. What doesn't sit right with me is the bird of prey 'egg market' and breeding these magnificent birds which should be flying freely in the wild so that they live a life in captivity. Whenever humans mess with the balance of nature, they wreck it. Look at how we are now having to fight to restore nature at the moment- we need to ask ourselves why did that happen? Anyway, I've gone off track- like I said, the answer is deep and complex. Have a super rest of the week, take care🌻🦋

Hello from the US, the situation with unavailable mooring got me wondering, is there some sort of communication network other than word of mouth between boaters?
Hi Terry, thank you for your comment. You raise a good question there. On Facebook, there are Boaters’ pages but nothing else that I can think of which is used like you say. When we were cruising yesterday, several passing boaters told us if there were boats behind them or if the locks were set our way. The ‘word of mouth’ on the canal is the best up to date information we have I think. Have a super Sunday and week ahead, take care🌻🦋

This feed u showed two plates with some kind of delicious warm meal on them, but only u eating said meal? I am always happy to answer questions, so don't worry about that. I am married, but my husband doesn't want to be in the vlogs at all as he doesn't do any form of social media really. He loves the fact that I am making them though as it is a record of our journey. I know it might seem odd to watch, but when we bump into viewers along the canal and they meet him, then they realise that I have not invented an imaginary husband and he is actually a normal human being! Soooo..BIG QUESTION! If I should need to go to work or out with friends, or ?? And I leave my dog home...how do you keep the boat warm? You'll be gone for 8 hours...
Honestly, this is a tough question for me as I don't leave Zephyr on the boat; she comes out with me and as I work online then we are at home together. I know a boater who goes to work and for the morning leaves his dog, comes back and walks it at lunchtime, stokes the fire and then goes back for after lunch for 4 hours, so it breaks up the day a bit. @The Mindful Narrowboat Well...I was SOLD on the idea of selling my home in the US, and getting a VISA for the UK for 2 years, extending possibly to 4. Working for 7-8 mo. A year, and touring spring-fall. However, The UK will not issue work Visas for temporary work So I'd have to be moored, and not a boat on the move...and it's only for 1 year. So no way around it. 😪 I'm SO BUMMED OUT! CHUFFED? DAMN...

My dad once built a water bath for the birds on our front fence, and there was this crow that used to bring his bread around, and soften it by dropping it it the bird bath. My dear old dad would tell everybody down the pub about it, and say over and over what smart birds crows were!!

I grew up alongside the semi-derelict east Manchester canals.....The industrial, nasty, canals.. people wanted them filled in as they were rat-runs.... full of dead dogs and rubbish....(as a kid I pulled a few out and gave them a decent burial.)
Now of course the site of "desirable properties"....for those with too much money... (?) (Whoa: Hardly Venice, is it?)
The shortsightedness of the councils at the time beggars belief. They allowed developers to concrete over sections.
Now, in Stalybridge, for example...the canal is restored and is an essential part of that small towns history.
To see the canals you visit is a real treat for me....helps erase the horrors of what went on in Manchester and its surrounding areas with the canals in the 1960's & 70's.
Your appreciation of nature is a real tonic. Your dog is brilliant too!

I get a feeling of excitement when I see you’ve uploaded a new video. The sky is so blue for the time of the year, I notice your garden at the front of the boat is still looking nice. Absolutely beautiful footage of a really pretty part of the canal network. It’s been a great year for mushrooms, they are growing in my lawn as well as at the side of the towpath. Those crocheted poppies were beautiful someone has spent a lot of time making them. I always feel like I’ve learned something interesting when I’ve watched your vlog. I loved the Postman Pat statue, how interesting that there is no information linking him to Welford. Your food made me feel hungry it looked so colourful and tasty. Hi Scotland here again. Your adventures just blow me away Vanessa. Just watched another 4 tonight while enjoying my whisky. Its -6° outside and expecting snow soon. Love the butterfly you painted on Alice Grace in 156 and very impressed with your rowing when you took little Alice for an adventure. I have to smile when you say everything is "gorgeous". You have an amazing life Vanessa and was a tad concerned when the other night you were debating whether to continue or not. You mentioned the cost of the licence, fuel etc etc. The relaxed life you all 3 have is so important. Zaph is a unique dog for sure. Carry on doing what you both enjoy. Very similar day here. We had a "high" of 31F, overcast and damp from yesterday's rain. I made a huge pot of 15 bean and ham soup which I'll be sharing with family this weekend. Perfect thing while watching your lovely video. I do enjoy the fungus you identify, in spite of the fact that I won't eat mushrooms. They are strangely beautiful and fascinating to look at. I also enjoy the art you create for your journal. Well done!

Thanks Vanessa for another voyage on the Allice Grace. I agree that a Murder of crows is sort of a harsh name. I want to tell you another story that might explain why I am attached to the crows around here. My wife told me about a crow that she adopted and named Smoky he had a broken wing so her and her brothers nursed him a backed to health and they kept him for a few months. He became sort of a pet to her and her brothers for a few months or so I think it is so great when you can help natures creatures that way. I learned a lot about mushrooms today. I thank you again for the best 20 mins of my Friday. I have been spending a lot of time on TicTok lately it's mostly to do with politics I am so happy that our mid term elections are over. Now I can go back to my favorite things which are peoples pet's You know what I found a lot of people have pet Owls! it was so cool to see their owl's do all sorts of tricks. Your wife's story about the crow is beautiful, especially that it was nursed back to good health and released back into the wild. I used to think that it might be too cold for Zephyr to swim, but then I read that the Labrador breed is originally part Canadian water dog that swam in freezing waters to retrieve fishing nets and fish for fishermen. This explained to me why she is always desperate to swim, whatever the weather! I don't allow her in icy water though. Have a wonderful weekend, take care🌻🦋
First time on a Friday for weeks the atmospherics must be right.The fungi from last week and this are amazing.It probably helps with the isolated nature of that stretch of country.It is one of my favourite parts of the system.Stay warm and perhaps more fantastic fungi next week.

Hello Vanessa ! I have to say that I am so enjoying your vlogs. You have this calming effect ! I love all of your information on the birds, plants and fungi, etc. but where do you source all of your knowledge ??! We have just bought our narrowboat, and ventured out in it for the first time on Saturday (nail-biting for me, but not my hubby apparently!) we will be out properly next year after our retirement in December. Anyhow, I digress ! Can you recommend any books that would be helpful in identifying the wildlife and plant life so that when we are cruising i will have a reference book. It would be a great Christmas present for someone to buy me ! Thanks Vanessa, and also really enjoy seeing your beautiful artwork and your recollections of what you have seen on your travels. Recently a viewer recommended a book called Food for Free by Richard Mabey which I am ordering for Christmas. I have picked up a lot of ID cards from the National Trust shop which when you go to visit any of their sites you might find. Anyway, happy floaty life and I’m sure to see you one day. Take care🦋🌻

Hi Vanessa: I've never seen a Fieldfare before. We have Redwing Blackbirds in the Pacific NW of the USA as well as other places, but not the "Redwing" that's in the UK. Beautiful birds! The Fieldfare sort of reminds me of a Northern Flicker but smaller. Love your illustrations and poetry. Jenny :o)

I am in awe of your both your knowledge and power to observe the beauty around you. Loved Zephyr doing labrador things. I guess there is a process to go through getting her back inside. As I recall I could my house with Labrador hair. It's such a joy to watch your videos - they must take days to produce because the editing is so good. It's so strange but where I live in the southern hemisphere it's been the same weather!! Cold and very wet.

There is a process for getting Zephyr back in the boat which is hectic!😆 It is made easier by having the pramhood at the back of the boat and there is loads of Labrador hair! Hi Magnus, I am glad that you liked the addition of the map at the beginning. I will try and include this in all of my vlogs now. 👍 The speed we go varies, depending on where we are: going past moored boats is tick over speed which is about 2mph; on canals we normally cruise at 3mph and on rivers 4mph. My work in all online and so when we cruise each week, we check the signal before mooring. It has worked for us so far🤞 There are so many great vlogs out there, some in marinas, some continuously cruising, that you should be able to get a good idea of what will work for you. I have recently bought "Mushrooms" by Roger Philips which is a great book if you want to forage mushrooms, also I have "The Forager's Calendar" which lists what is edible throughout the year. "Finding the Mother Tree" is a good book about the relationship trees have with fungus and other trees around them. My absolute favourite book is "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" by Edith Holden and then I also have "Nature Notes" and her biography "The Edwardian Lady" which I love. Lovely vlog as usual Vanessa, how hard do you have to search to find so many different fungi? I’ve never seen a field fare before. They are quite striking, are they part of the thrush family? I have to pick my daughter up from Northampton tomorrow and was thinking of walking the Welford arm from Foxton. That was until I saw the sign post with 7 miles to Foxton on it 😂

As for walking from Foxton to the end of the Welford Arm, that is quite a walk, but what a pretty one it would be. I also wanted to share something I saw last week on the Foxes Afloat page about a European Eagle Owl that they got from a rescue center I thought it was really nice of them to build a place for it to stay. |They said they can not turn it lose since it was not native to the UK something I don’t quite understand. Hi Steve, you are so kind to be thinking of us with our engine- I have an update in this Friday's vlog. In terms of offering an opinion about the European Eagle Owl, it is not a simple answer. I think that what the Foxes are doing is commendable as that beautiful creature would not survive in the wild now. What doesn't sit right with me is the bird of prey 'egg market' and breeding these magnificent birds which should be flying freely in the wild so that they live a life in captivity. Whenever humans mess with the balance of nature, they wreck it. Look at how we are now having to fight to restore nature at the moment- we need to ask ourselves why did that happen? Hi Terry, thank you for your comment. You raise a good question there. On Facebook, there are Boaters’ pages but nothing else that I can think of which is used like you say. When we were cruising yesterday, several passing boaters told us if there were boats behind them or if the locks were set our way. I am always happy to answer questions, so don't worry about that. I am married, but my husband doesn't want to be in the vlogs at all as he doesn't do any form of social media really. He loves the fact that I am making them though as it is a record of our journey. I know it might seem odd to watch, but when we bump into viewers along the canal and they meet him, then they realise that I have not invented an imaginary husband and he is actually a normal human being! Soooo..BIG QUESTION! If I should need to go to work or out with friends, or ?? And I leave my dog home...how do you keep the boat warm? You'll be gone for 8 hours...
Honestly, this is a tough question for me as I don't leave Zephyr on the boat; she comes out with me and as I work online then we are at home together. I know a boater who goes to work and for the morning leaves his dog, comes back and walks it at lunchtime, stokes the fire and then goes back for after lunch for 4 hours, so it breaks up the day a bit. @The Mindful Narrowboat Well...I was SOLD on the idea of selling my home in the US, and getting a VISA for the UK for 2 years, extending possibly to 4. Working for 7-8 mo. A year, and touring spring-fall. However, The UK will not issue work Visas for temporary work So I'd have to be moored, and not a boat on the move...and it's only for 1 year. So no way around it. 😪 I'm SO BUMMED OUT! CHUFFED? DAMN...
