Condolences, Krugg.. we lost our dog we called Peanut a few weeks ago. She was our little sky dog. Thanks for another captivating episode, ya bastard. I can't wait to see what stories you'll pull once Adventure Mode drops.
Wonderful episode Krugg. Loved the dramatic ending with the dwarves leaving the fortress to go hunting a dangerous beast in an underground fungal jungle. Wonderful.
A note regarding culling animals with undesirable traits, as per the dog situation. Personally, I find the animal I want to get rid of in fortress mode, and then I give it a nickname (usually 'X', but it could be anything) and the nickname will show up in the creatures list (so instead of 'Stray Dog' it will list 'Stray X'). Not sure if this is something you'd want to do, but I figured I'd put it forward.
I broke my leg and couldn't access my computer for playing, so in order to prevent myself from getting frustrated, I saved your couple last DF videos for a time when I could scratch that itch again - which is now. This is lovely! You truly are a great story teller and I enjoy very much listening to you!
Mm, mm. I know the floor coverings start appearing on dirt surfaces, but I think it just happens automatically/randomly after you gain access to the new caves. i don't believe there's a mechanic deeper than that, unfortunately.
I didn't understand the appeal of Dwarf Fortress until watching your series here. Your narrative skills are impressive! Not to mention the artwork, just wow. I love that you and your partner collaborate on them too. It breathes so much life into this game. I would love to see your take on a narrative about a RimWorld colony. RimWorld isn't as deep as DF in some ways but it is a much better player experience and the storytelling that comes from its random events is always surprising and dramatic. Hope you give it a shot after the Spearcavern story comes to an end.
I loved the tour of the fort Tinny gave us, the videos don’t always give us a good gauge of how the dwarves transition between parts of the fort, so it was really nice to see
Another excellent upload. The epic battle between the forgotten beasts brought back memories of the old "Godzilla vs" movies. Of course with something only Dwarf Fortress and Kruggsmash could bring to the party.
You could automate the forgotten beast trap with raising bridges and pressure plates. And maybe a bridge/door to block access whenever you aren't using it to trap beasts so its a not a free way into the fortress. Then you can trap all the big beasties you want to throw in an arena or something. Or set up for silk farming or fire throwing defense. Lots of fun possibilities.
A mocking bird forgotten beast! One would have to wonder what strange noises it have picked up and is copying since time immemorial, maybe it whispers the forgotten words of the gods at the time of creation?
Krugg, thank you so much for this series. I stumbled across it today, and binging it has been an absolute delight -- a haven of calmly crazy goodness in a dumpster fire world. I'm very sad to hear about your grandmother -- my sincere condolences.
As a general PSA, I stumbled on a reliable way of fighting webbing creatures with minimal casualties. What you want is a long, vertical stairwell. Mine was 3x3 and stretched from fort to caverns. Engage the webbers while they're still climbing the stairs, as it seems they're not able to spray webs up or down, only horizontally. While your soldiers can stab at it from above and below.
Hearing Krugg strategize about all the forgotten beasts' unique traits makes me think about where the dwarves learned of all that stuff. I wonder if they have like, a monster compendium, and if they do if anyone in the fortress is working on adding to it based on the beasts they fight. Since this is a monster-hunting fortress it would be such a cool thing to pass down through generations far into the future.
My method for webbed beasts is large numbers and big open rooms. Specifically if you make a staircase that goes up into the center of a big room filled with dwarves and war dogs and put a hatch so they dont run down the stairs, the beast is only able to shoot in one direction at a time so some of the dwarves should be able to stun lock it before it can web them all.
33:55 I could be Mandela effecting right now, but i started playing a little after I discovered you in the middle of Honeystoker, and I'm pretty sure cavern grasses have been doing that since I started
I swear one of these days, Kruggsmash needs to write a screenplay based on his playthroughs. Spearcavern, The Scorchfountain + Chamberpoint Sagas, Honeystoker, Monsterkiller; we need a dark fantasy movie or series or something with Krugg at the point.
My last fortress had two green glass beats fighting in the second cave layer, their battle took weeks in game time, one had webs, the other had either webs or another attack. Both died in their struggle.
I've found that having an individual temple dedicated to each of the dwarven gods - containing very high quality furniture + high quality door + expert engraving - gives the dorks a lot of happy thoughts at a relatively low cost. Building guild halls with high quality fixtures and engravings, also helps the mood a lot. Raiding 'dead' areas for treasure ( most likely books ) can yield good results without too much external threat - except for the BS 'total value' metric which determines enemy raids.
Woow, I came here because of Hazzor's video's of Rimworld and found out about Dwarf Fortress on with he made a few episodes. Great serie you made, really loving it, cant wait to check out the rest of youre videos and the game itself.
I love the additional lore - dunno if that's been a thing and I'm only just noticing it or if you just started doing it but it's really cool, fun world building. :3
I really enjoyed the Dwarven sayings. I might just start using, "If you spend your time fighting Forgotten Beasts, you'll find yourself devoured by Crundles." in regular conversations. 😁
for making a breed of dog theres a mod now to make their sprites (along with all the rest of the domestic creatures) reflect their true colors! cats and dogs layered sprites with uniquely colored heads, ears, bodies, tails, front and back paws!
My trick with the animals is if there is a particular animal I don`t want I usually rename it as "NO GOOD" or "KILL" etc. and then it`s easier to spot it from the list than horse, horse, horse...etc. I hope it helped. Have a fantastic day and keep up the good work Krugg.
I had the barracks problem too, ended up solving it by assigning each weapon and armor piece individually. It was a pain to do for 4 squads, because in the menu you can't easily tell which ones were assigned already, but for seven dwarves this should not be a big issue. This is a pretty brute force solution tho so hope you can find a better one.
Yeah, when you study how the combat works (usually via manual targeting stuff in adventure mode) is you can see the chance to hit and the "solidness" of the hit. The automatic choices go for prioritizing hit chance which is often why a fight between fresh opponents starts off with a lot of misses or hits that graze. Now if you target someone sleeping, unconscious, or webbed the hit chance on any part is going to be 100% so the choice there is to go for the most lethal option.
I had a neat discovery in my current fort with Draltha. I captured a bunch with my cage traps around my first cavern layer entrance, and my dorfs naturally took them up in the animal storage area. Eventually, a few of them had children. So, I decided to see about training them. The adults took to the training a little (eventually getting better trained), but I somehow managed to immediately tame the children and they are fully domesticated. After a few generations, I've got herds of fully tame Draltha in my fungal fields. My civilization has learned a lot about Draltha taming from my fort's efforts. Worth giving them a shot in the future.

Like a giant aviary, and if you get attacked by goblins, you could throw them into their aviary as punishment 🦉☠️ PD: Maybe you already know this but you can also force contact with other civilizations if you send a squad to make a demand for a tribute, the other civilizations do not usually get angry and start coming

As you say with web creatures if you attack head on all your dwarfs will die. I generally try to attack from 3-4 sides with ranged dwarfs as last one hoping for lucky shot. Of course you may need to split your squads into smaller groups and the dwarf who gets hit with web first may die before other join but "well it's sacrifice I am willing to take". So I like that you need good strategic approach for some _fun_.
In the old UI, you could butcher or geld animals directly from the looking menu, and it's a feature that's sorely missing in the Steam release, unfortunately.
I'd like to schedule like a workload for a dwarf. Some dwarves at 50 some 75 some in 90... Some 10% or even zero labor UNLESS they want to. Stuff they want to do is not part of that... A little dwarf life balance. Then I can truly retire a dwarf to leisure craft.
I've noticed with the barracks is that they often go and pick up their gear, then put it away, then pick it up again and they move it from barracks to stockpile to barracks constantly.
