Hiya John! I understand giving the audience what they crave but, from my perspective, I watch your videos not so much cuz they might interest me, a few haven’t, but because there is always the possibility that I’ll learn something new that I can add to my own builds to improve them, so I watch them anyway. And that includes reworking anything that’s not up to snuff.
As for finishing the Victory, even after you put it under glass, I suspect you might find and implement improvements.
I look forward to your updates. The rigging, even without sails, will be an adventure.
I totally agree. I really enjoy seeing the little techniques
I have had a similar kit for 50 years to scared to start
Make a start my friend
This video was recommended to me and I'm glad it was just subbed,HMS victory looks epic, Justin
Thank you Justin, I’m glad I was recommended to you
John, your Victory is a work of art! It will be finished when it’s finished! It’s such a delight to hang out with you while you build and chat. I’m hoping to have my hull fully planked this year!!! LOL! Cheers, Phil
Cheers mate, I really do enjoy the art of wooden ship building, I’m only trying to speed up abit. is because theres so many beautiful wooden ships I would still like to build, and at 4to 5 years a ship the clock ticking. Lol
This is a big model and fortunately in most cases mistakes can be rectified or remade.
Please learn the names and technical terms of some of the parts , as someone who's studied these tall ships as well as actually crewed and sailed them, I assure you you will get to understand how the main engine the sails and masts worked and I think this scale will lend itself to replicating the real thing or at least get a bit more accuracy with the engineering of these ships.
Best of luck.
That is beautifully made so far John. I really love the perfect detail you have put into its construction. Well done.
Thank you Colin
I think in the end when you are going to look at the end result you are going to be happy with the changes you have made. It is all about the endresult. I can tell you that looking at the changes you where making engouraged me to do my second build and do that ignoring most of the instructions given by Deagostini and created the deckings aligned with the woodstrips giving more detail in order to create a lookthru giving extra detail. That works far more bbetter then the system Deagostini suggests. Unfortunately part of the parts i ordered from Woody models got lost thanks to dutch customs but i can manage with what i have. Anyway just to say it again, you making changes worked out just fine for me as well. And i can see that you are getting close to rigging.
Thank you, John. Keep it going. The HSM Victory is so beautiful. Happy new year. I wish you a good health and success in every thing you do.
Thank you Peter
Looks Amazing !...My Norske Love took me 10 years to build. Loved every minute of it.
I wont be building another warship any time soon though. Too intense at this stage
of my life and I likely wouldn`t
live long enough to finish it.....Cheers
Thank you my friend
Happy New Year John, when I heard your chair creak I thought It was sound effects from the boat 😂😂
Thank you roger
That's one amazing looking ship, way beyond my skill level but one day who knows. Looking forward to your work throughout 2022. 👍🇦🇺
I’m going to build a single mast starter wooden kit build later in the year, so maybe that’s something you could build along with me
My grandfather built this ship very similar scale to this.
If your interested i can upload a video of it as I have it now. It truly is a beautiful ship and the one I have is immensely detailed
Looking good John I am almost to your stage with the yards on the mass then I got a put the blocks and I’ll tackle on them and then I’ll be ready for the rigging and yeah I’m really interested in your rigging videos so keep up the good work man you’re doing great and thanks for all your helpful suggestions and stuff and answering all my questions throughout last year I to myself stop from September till last week at Christmas just to get away from it from a little bit and do other projects around the house but now I’m getting fully into it again so I’m ready to get going and thanks again John and I hope you had a happy new year
Happy you dick. And Thank you for your support in 2021, some ship builders on RUclips can go all year round, but I like to have a small break from time to time, builds up my motivation again
Hi John that victory is really taking shape now, you have done a cracking job of it.
.-
Thank you dean. It’s a real labour of love
Superbly crafted model, congratulations !!!
Thank you axel
Beautiful work, good videos!
Thank you Brian
Bravo bon travail super magnifique ou peux t on l acheter et avoir des vidéos de montage
Happy New year 🍺🍺🍺👍👍👍🙏🙏💞💞🐕🐕 great vid
Happy new year eddy
Great job , I have been wanting to build the Victory for a while but I'm not very good at working with wood so iv got the Heller 1/96 kit and see how I get on with that , if it turns out half as good as yours I will be pleased.
Thank you Paul. There is a lot of good builders working on the heller victory kit on RUclips. I’m sure you will find them helpful, and good luck with you build
All the best to you and your family for 2022.
Thank you Glen
Hi John I have been watching your videos over the years and I have enjoyed all of them please keep them going your brilliant mate thank you Nick🦘🐨
Thank you
Hello john great video she still looks great
I have a short question what color did you use for the yellow ochre paint ? and what kind of topcoaut have you aplied ?
The yellow ochre is from admiralty paints range. And all sealed with a Matt varnish
Outstanding.
Subscribed.
Thank you Andrew
Should be an interesting few months watching the rigging progress, especially the shrouds and rat lines, am looking for tips here John.
Yes mate. That’s why I want to fast forward with the build. And start filming to guides again with the rigging stage
I know this is a old video, but I would love to know what model kit that is, so I could order one myself. Thanks !
it looks amazing
Thank you Chris, the hard work is starting to pay off
Happy New Year John x
Happy new year Annie , and thank you for your support in 2021
I love your victory build John (for me - more than any if the other kits which are also good but victory is brilliant)
To finish that this year i think you would have to spend a lot of time as the rigging plans look so complicated. Not sure how that would fit with your other build schedules?
Will certainly enjoy any victory updates you post
Thank you Anthony, I would love to build only victory, but with my other commitment, that’s going to be very difficult going forward, but I will always post regular updates
Hi John, nice little review of your hard work! Yes the rigging will take ages to get right. My Bounty had loads of reworks before I got the rigging correct! Like you I made loads of very fine detailed mods. My first attempt on the build was a failure in 2001 as I lacked knowledge and tools to craft the wood correctly. My second attempt went so much better after arming myself with the correct fine wood working tools and additional modification items. I decided to make my sails furled so as to appreciate the deck detail. Lastly, the protection and display of the finished model! These models are awful for being dust magnets and ultimately the model will look terrible if not covered. I made my own display case which was not easy but now my model looks so fresh and dust free after being on display for 18 months. Additionally because of the shape of these ships the display case's can end up being huge! My Bounty is a 1/50 scale and the case is pretty big! Anyway one step at a time John, my advice would be to only do the rigging when you really feel like it, so if it takes 2 years of intermittent work so be it. You will end up with a museum standard model to be proud of. Lets hope for a much better 2022. I doubt that I will even get to start my Victory this year! Regards JH 😉
Hi Johnny I’m thinking about buying a single mast cutter maybe the lady nelson, that I can build quickly. And using that kit as a practice with the rigging before moving back over to the victory after refreshing my skills
@@Johnbuildsiconic Sounds like a good idea John. Instructions on rigging are not that easy to follow and I can recommend the book Rigging Period Ship Models by Lennarth Petersson if you haven't got a copy. A really good detailed and easy to understand book with masses of clear illustrations on what goes where! As far as I am aware the Victory was the only ship model that had her own dedicated parts build step by step build video series. These are still available on Y-Tube I believe. However building a simple rigged ship model sounds like a good idea and will prep you for the work ahead quite well. I also have Sovereign of the Seas to build at some point and the Mary Rose too! Actually, the rigging on the Mary Rose looks pretty basic as it's an early ship with simple rigging! I have held off from that build as there is still some uncertainty as to the true configuration of the forecastle. I have asked the Mary Rose Trust about that but the parts that may answer the question are still in the Solent which is frustrating!! Good luck with the rigging and remember it will take as long as it takes!!! Regards Johnny 😉
I love the Mary rose Johnny, I spent the whole day watching her come out of the sea as a kid, that’s where my love for wooden ships started
@@Johnbuildsiconic Yes the Mary Rose was a nice little ship if a bit odd looking! I have chosen a ship from the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries as examples of the craft. The Mary Rose kit will be quite a challenge too if I live that long!!!! J 😂😂
I’m sure you will Johnny. But even I’m thinking will I have time to build all the ships I would like to
Hi john I'm glad your back on your building project on HMS VICTORY... Wayne has almost completed the fast and furious car...driven by vin diesel.. did you complete the Knight rider car...
Hi Carl, no KITT is still at stage 52
Happy New Year
Happy new year B
Hi John I would like your help, I have the plan for the Amati Victory 1: 100 scale, I wanted to know how do I know where to place the guns on the sides? Maybe from the bridges? Help
Hey John lobe the build I agree with doing videos for the main parts of the build. I myself love the tiny little details would you be open to doing a couple of you tube short videos for updates on the little bits as you complete them?
Hi Karl making RUclips shorts with updates would be a good idea, you tube are pushing shorts aswell
I feel your pain John..I projected mine to be done in February, but I've put the model down for a month or so. I decided this time to put on the sails, and that is the most tedious of all the processes, so I needed a break. Maybe in April now. It's a beast, isn't it? And I can report that the Titebond II I used for the copper plates have indeed held up. So from now on, it's definitely going to be my main adhesive.
Hi Daryl, I’ve never used titebond adhesive before, so I would interested in see how it holds
@@Johnbuildsiconic Titebond II (and only that) is rated for bonding metals to wood. The copper went on a year ago, and is holding well. Plus, no CA or accelerator fumes.
That’s good because I have a lot of problems with accelerator fumes from CA
@@Johnbuildsiconic I did also. An engineer from Franklin (who makes Titebond) told us (at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking) that TBII bonds metals to woods. I did some experiments, and, in the case of thin copper like these plates, it worked great. When I built the Cutty Sark a few years ago, after a short while with all the copper, the CA was just awful.
John, if you’ve said and I’ve missed it, I apologize.. where can one buy the ship jig that you showed? Thanks
Hi Rickey, you can contact Andrew with this link andrew3d.net/
John, where did you get copper strips with the tape backing? I really like that look
Hi ray the copper tape was on Amazon, sold as slug tape
Thank you for posting your HMS Victory update video. Looks amazing with the masts in place.. re the rigging; are you going to add a full set of sails John?
Hi David all my previous wooden kits. I’ve added the full sails. So I’m going to leave it un-sailed this time
@@Johnbuildsiconic ok .. for years the real one down at Portsmouth was like that … and it looked great .. sad to see her without her masts (per Wayne Green’s last visit down there). The rigging will be an achievement in itself. Have always liked HMS Victory ever since my first visit to her in the 60’s. Built the large Airfix one with my dad after that (sadly neither my father or the model are no longer with us) & have been back a few times & taken my kids to see her down there.
Thank you Dave, I’ve had a faw myself, I think the historical dockyards is one of the best days out in the U.K. and seeing to Mary rose bring recovered bk in the 80s got me into wooden ships as a young lad
Ciao John io sono un ragazzo italiano che ha un grande problema , ho un progetto della Amati " Victory " scala 1:100, ma i cannoni laterali come vanno posizionati? In base ai ponti? Sul disegno non ci sono istruzioni
My Victory doesn't even have decks installed. I'm not going to touch it until I finish a DeA Batista, because that one is a more basic ship where I've made a lot of mistakes and I have to continue learning to avoid them in the future models, such as being impatient and not assembling everything carefully. I haven't touched my models properly for years for studying abroad, thus I lost some skills which need to be remembered before touching Victory. Planking is the worst and Victory has only one layer, sooo... Skills recovery first. After all, building the models is very enjoyable, but it requires inspiration, because it's also a tedious task. The process is more important for me. For instance, assembling Lego has more worth to me than displaying the end result.
It’s very much the same for me, it’s the journey of the build, and not the end result or the displayed model
Looking very good sir, think you might finish it if you only work on Victory. Where goes it when you finish ?
Hi Steve, wish I could only focus on victory, but I can’t anymore, where will victory go when finish. Thank I’m going to make a classic looking glass cabinet
Superb work. May I ask if you are planning to finish it with or without sails?
Hi Eldon, I’m going to finish Victory this time Without sails
John, I've come to a conclusion as I'm not a experienced model builder like yourself, what you actually need kidda is a 15ft shed to store all your models...
hi carl, you really hit the nail on the head, ive grown out of my room and i really need a large garden office workshop to continue building my large hull ships
Are you going to make your own lines with a ropewalk?
Yes Ken, so that’s also going to slow me down somewhat
Bonjour, quelle est la marque de ce modele svp ?
Hi my friend, The kit is a 1/84 scale kit from modelspace deagostini
