- Listen to this radio broadcast - where they isolate all tracks from TOTO's Rosanna - as you never heard before!!!
This million-selling Gold-certified hit single "Rosanna" - written by David Paich - was the opening track and the first single from their 1982 album Toto IV. Rosanna won the Record of the Year Grammy Award in the 1983 presentations and was also nominated for the Song of the Year award.
In musician circles, the song is known for its highly influential namesake half-time shuffle, as well as the ending guitar solo played by guitarist Steve Lukather.
The drum pattern is known as a "half-time shuffle", and shows "definite jazz influence". Featuring ghost notes and derived from the combination of what Jeff Porcaro called the "Bernard Purdie half-time shuffle" (Purdie shuffle) as well as the variation thereof John Bonham played on "Fool in the Rain" with the well-known Bo Diddley beat.
Our brother Mike Porcaro appears in this video, as original Toto bass player David Hungate left before the video was made.
MUSICIANS ON THIS TRACK:
David Paich - synthesizer, piano, Hammond, backing vocal, horn arrangements
Steve Lukather - lead and backing vocals, guitar
Bobby Kimball - lead and backing vocals
Jeff Porcaro - drums
Steve Porcaro - synthesizer
David Hungate - bass
Lenny Castro - percussion, conga
Tom Scott - saxophone
Jim Horn - saxophone
Gary Grant - trumpet
Jerry Hey - trumpet and horn arrangements
James Pankow - trombone
Tom Kelly - backing vocal
First off, the boys from TOTO are the best session musicians of all time. They essentially invented the L.A. groove of the day. I am a freak about isolating their work, especially Jeff Porcaro. This is fun! Thanks for posting!
Amen!
OPinion, not facts.. I would say the “Funk Brothers’ @motown are the number studio musicians ever…
That's just gold, right there. Every component/track of the songs kills. Take note new artists, this is how it's done.
+zerodefectmachine Yep, no Pro Tools, or pitch correct. Just straight, raw, real talent.
Times have changed.
After reading hundreds of reactions below this video I decided it's about time to make a statement here.
No defense, no offense and nothing personal either. Just MY opinion (for what it's worth) without the smallest intention to insult anyone.
I posted this clip because I LIKE IT and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one as I see the number of views and likes.
Sure some people will discover some incorrect facts in the comment of the radio hosts just as I did, BUT....come on! Nobody has been injured! Feel free to deliver your correction in a comment, but without name calling and with your RESPECT please.
Since I published this vid I removed so much negative comments with f**k words and bad insults personally addressed to the radio hosts. Just because a couple of wrong facts or because they had not all the time in the world to pay attention to all solo's and complete tracks per instrument? Or maybe it's just because they express their excitement about Toto and their supreme skills?
Please keep in mind that it's their job to open up their mouth and know 'bout the existence of automated non-stop stations.
Radio hosts neither give on air 'note for note' music lessons.
Let's feed & feel the positive vibe for once and be all grateful that this radio station take 15 minutes of their airplay for TOTO!
More radio stations should follow!
....just my humble opinion in a very polited and respectful way
Enjoy the music! :-)
OMGoodness your talking was not only informative, but highly entertaining. I love love loved it! Thank you for posting!!! 👏🏼👏🏼
Amen, brother. Thanks for all you do, Jimmy!
If they ask you to take this song apart and tell them how to play it - then they're not even CLOSE to "ready for this kind of stuff". Keep practicing kids, you'll get there. In 20 years time or so. That's the way it works for most people anyway.
I am soooo jealous of what you were able to do there Jimmy. I'd LOVE to be able to sit at a mixing console and tear this song apart track by track. Not to figure out how it's played. Jeff's video taught me his half time shuffle long ago on his videos and I nail it.
But THANK YOU for posting this video here to RUclips. It takes a musician to fully appreciate this radio broadcast and I would have loved to sit there with you and TALK about it. Haters will hate, never mind them.
I don't get the hate. This is amazing and gives me chills how damn smooth it is!
Jimmy, my friend, thank you! Such an amazing thing to hear separately. Would love to hear "Africa" broken down also! DOWN with the negative Jerks!!
"I never thought that losing you could hurt so baa-aa-aaad" has to be one of the most cliche-sounding lines in popular music, but when you hear it like this you totally buy it.
I truly believe that the more isolated tracks we all hear, the current music " business " situation ( artists not getting paid, digital download fever, etc. . ) could actually recover and restore glory to many, if not most, musician and composers. Think about it: To discover the inner magic of a piece of music is a whole other universe to explore, especially for us mere mortals. After hearing this, I immediately went back and listened to the entire Toto IV disc. Just amazingly magical!
I guess you're absolutely right David. I have listened to this album hundreds of times on CD and vinyl, but discovered even more beautiful details in these isolated tracks. All the tracks are brilliant. That's what's TOTO all about. Not a cheap and plain 4/4 measure with only three major chords like 90% of the present pop music, but those brilliant little details on a hi-hat, a bass grooveline, subtile guitarlick, and so on....sometimes simple and most of the time insufferable difficult; but always brilliant.
All those (often very little) details can be heard (better) in these isolated tracks. The vocal harmonies for example.
I can't get enough of this stuff. I can listen this every day, over and over again.
There is so much insanely tasty playing in this song. Every time you hear it there are new layers you pick up, each one of them making the tune better. Everyone knows the drum groove and rightly so, it's iconic. But there are so many more parts equally worthy and the way it comes together makes it a masterpiece.
The fact that the synthesizer solo-part wasn't given any attention is unfathomable to me...
Nearly had a physical reaction over that omission. It's all great, and that drum beat changed the way drums are played, but that keyboard solo is the climax of the song. Everything...everything...leads up to it. Oh well...Never overestimate the general public.
+Tobias Adolfsson It's a great solo isn't and you feel like the whole song leads up to it.
+Tobias Adolfsson God I know. Best part of the track apart from vocals to me
+Christian Hand where did these masters come from? Have you access to 'Africa'?
+Tobias Adolfsson Totally agree. Synth solo got dissed big time!
Ever since I first listened to this video, I have listened to this awesome tune from a completely different perspective.
And every time it is on the radio, I want to say to my wife: "Can you imagine how freaking awesome this is!?",
but it think she stopped appreciating my enthusiasm after the fifth time I told hee.
Now I'm just getting angry whenever a radio station cuts of the guitar solo at the end.
It's magic!
Porcaro kills that groove on the kit so beautifully, those ghost notes on the snare alone are executed perfectly with such insanely precise dynamics! Jeff's playing was always light years beyond anyone else's ability....and so smooth. Smoother than Extra Super Creamy Peanut Butter! The song is amazing for being the typical 80's type of Top 40 Pop tune. None of the bands that are around today could ever create a masterpiece song like Rosanna!? Not even with all that digitally enhancing Pro-Tools with auto-tuned, pitch-corrected, quantized, drum machine sampling bullsh*t! These are real musicians with real talent playing real musical instruments. No studio magic needed right here, just pure skill!
The full drums only track is also on RUclips

Can't tell you how wonderful this dissection is ! !
One of my all time favorite groups. Jeff Porcaro is a monster! Love Billy Kimball's vocals too. Well worth a listen as you really get to admire the amazing talent this group had.
Bobby Kimball
The commentary is brilliant! I am loving the concept of these breakdowns, you've allowed me to open my ears in new ways. THANK YOU Christian Hand!
Magnificent musicians. True masters of their craft.
THIS was SO SO SO Great! Can't believe I just now head this - I had heard the Drum Track - but not the other stuff... LOVE IT!
RUclips is a goldmine!
Holy hell so much talent.. I always loved this song but this really let's the awesome sink in..
I've listened to this and loved it since it first came out in the 70s but had never heard this isolated track. This is freaking awesome!
I learned this when I was 22 years old on keyboards. Took me about two weeks. Incredible song.
I’ve watched this video a dozen times already. Every time I watch it, parts give me chills.
My favorite band every! This album is why I wanted to play drums. I got chills listening to the isolated vocals!
I think you've forgotten the synth solo interlude from David Paich and Steve Porcaro. That part is incredible.
Amazing 🗡️🎩🎸
No mention of David Paich surely the piano part they credit to Steve Porcaro is him.
OMG. I can't believe to hear these tracks. Thank you so much for sharing them!
AMAZING! These guys were/are the real deal, I love isolated tracks, these in particular are incredible, thanks for posting!
The drum groove to end all drum grooves!!! LOL
I've always LOVED this song, but this is just ...WOW. Good God is right, amazing doesn't even come close.
Since you guys wanted to know, the guy signing the lowest part on the “not quite a year since she went away” part, I’m pretty sure that it’s David Paich.
It's just absurd how talented Toto are. Hats off.
It's Steve L on less vox of the "all I wanna do when I wake up" part and Bobby K on the "all I wanna do is hold you tight" part.
Also.....Luke played the main guitar riff to Jacksons "beat it"
E Van H played solo to beat it.
And the bass
Luke fist, then Bobby singing the verses.
This is insane percectness recorded ON TAPE. No protools editing dudes...Thank you for ToTo!
Awesome love Steves solo. Did a real take when I first heard it on mtv when I was a kid. Beautiful vocals ad well. Agree there should be no talking
Thank you for posting this. So much talent in this recording. Each one of these musicians has the chance to show how talented they are. It is magic! Thanks again.
You are all awesome, I love how you all broke down each track then combined it all together
I heard these guys in Cancun last year live at the Moon Palace great show.
These guys should do this with more songs. I'd love to hear it. Great show segment.
Look up Christian James Hand , The Sessions On Air... this is the tip of the iceberg. You're welcome.
what a great super wonderful doc thank you so much !!
That guitar solo at the end, wow! Great hearing the whole thing isolated.
I learned about this two or three years ago. Every couple months, I listen to it again. I’m a dueling piano player so were always looking to better our performance of songs.
"Jeff Porcaro is such a legendary drummer that we are going to talk through his entire isolated performance."
Great find! Amazing music.
once in a lifetime (even if that) a group of the most accomplished musicians come together and form a band. Toto is that once in a lifetime band! Thank you so much for this! As soon as I heard Luke's outro I picked up my guitar and ran the track through Amazing slo downer and learned it! Right to the last note!
This must be an aspiring producer/sound engineer's textbook study. So amazing to hear this stuff isolated.
Absolutely loving your posts. I had no idea a) how much was going on in TOTO's songs, and now b) how much TOTO's band members had influence over the best music of the 1980s. It's making me feel a mix of emotions, mostly a feeling of loss that today's world isn't set up in such a way that music like this would be heard on the radio, let alone produced. I hope posts like this encourage a new generation to put their all into music.
Thanks Brian! I appreciate ;-)
Love to hear all these parts unpacked and examined in isolation.
WOW!!!! Just WOW!!!
I was 10 when this came out, and I've always been entranced both by Jeff's famous shuffle and Steve's 53 different guitar solos in one 😅
Jeff's groove made this track! Consummate performers all around...Timeless song
This was awesome, thanks so much for sharing.
Greetings from DJ FLO, Denmark (Y) :-) This broadcast is hilirious, great, Fabtastic (Y) This is PERFECT way, to dissect a Grammy-winning song (1982), in order for music-fans to get behind the making of one of the greatest singletracks in modern music (Y)
With you on this Jimmy. A well intentioned Masterclass, the likes of which is rarely seen.
Thank you.
A FB friend. 😃
such an amazing tune
Pure magic! Give us more!!!
Thanks so much for posting this. The drum beat on this song is legendary, as is the song itself. Not sure why there are so many people whining about the talking. Do they realize that it's a radio show? How many radio shows are cool enough to do something like this? My musician friends a I thank you for posting this!!
Lukather's solo at the end was a heat of the moment. Apparently the last part where he lets loose was actually faded out.
+mikosoft Lukather's vocals are apparently doubletracked. Can't tell if Kimball is also doubletracked but it sure sounds like a single take (or he's really really good at doubletracking). But that "meet you all the way" harmony is just crazy. It's much more complex than I thought. Also the horn harmonies are crazier than it seems.
That was the way back then. Doubling tracks. Still popular today. I do it. Make the vox huge! works on solo tracks too.
Wow, what an amazing video! You just can't find this kind of analysis anywhere. Just an awesome job! Thank you! So worth the extra 5 min :)
I love listening to this....not the dj stuff but the individual cuts!! Thank you
THE VERY BEST MUSIC LESSON
Thank you Jimmy, just appreciate from my heart for what you do !
Thanks, dear Jimmy - another nice one (Y) :-)
Jimmy, this is absolutely amazing stuff. Thank you for posting this.
The low bass is Dacid Paich...
+kipperfeast The piano player.
"Not quite a year" part, yes.-
This is CRAZY ! Great upload Jimmy K
Awesome!
Really interesting to hear it broken down like this.
Just had this on in the car going home late at night, and needed to hear it broken down - great job, very funny, and loved it!
He had created his own all style grove while he was in his teen years! And the rest of his age collages could luckily be able to play 3 or 4 different beats! With all respect of Charlie Watts and Ringo the Greatest of all still living drummers among of course Mr. Steve Gadd
Thanks so much for posting this Jimmy! Amazing to hear it all broken down...
this is so cool! love it!
Awesomeness!!!
Thank you SO much for posting this. Ever since I was young this was one of my favorites. As I grew as a musician I could appreciate SO much more. Now you have allowed me to have a peek into one of the classics. I'm very grateful. Thank You!!
P.S. The commentary is just fine. I understand. It's Radio.
This is now one of my fav videos, LOVED IT (shame there wasnt a synth solo part)
This is awesome!
Best Song ever - cool story!
Lukather on verses and Bobby on high bridges and all singers on chorus and harmonies including Paich on low harmony (I think). Great vid thanks
Thanks Jimmy, for posting. Put a big smile on my face.
The saxophone in this song is inspiration!! 🤟
That was awesome
love it
Great ! Thanks for posting !
They don't mention it here (and I'm not sure what mics were picking it up in the session) but during one part of Luke's solo on the outro (heard at about 6:30 on this clip), it's faint but you can hear someone yelling "WHOA" in the final version...the solo is rippin'...
...to be clear, you can't here it on the isolated track but you can hear it (barely) on the record version.
Beautiful piece of work - and totally kitschy result.
THX realy good
9:22 goose bumps every damn time!
Great!)
Bobby and Luke traded off on the lead vocals here. That low voice you hear int harmony is non other than David Paich. :) GREAT GREAT song... I miss the days when the people on the radio and winning grammys were truly the best of the best
Face it............a stunning performance. One for the books.
EXCELENTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Steve Lukather's guitar playing is amazing and nasty!
This is fucking insane!
I believe they talk over it so people don't grab the isolated tracks and create truly horrid dance mixes :)
That being said one will, from now on, hear these tracks in the FINAL mix, once they've been introduced to them HERE :)
+David Perkins More than enough here to sample the parts and recombine them.
Excelente video!
Seria bom fazer outros com outras canções.
the way they doubled them horns...GOOD JESUS!!!
RUclips is a goldmine!
No mention of David Paich surely the piano part they credit to Steve Porcaro is him.
Literal magic
Holy Fuck!!!!!! I love this!!!!!! OMG this is so cool!!!!!!!! Thank you man!!!!!
David Paich sings the low part...and yes: Bobby Kimball on lead vocals
+guitfinger lead low parts- steve lukather. lead high parts . bobby
+guitfinger The lower part of the verses is by Luke. I think the beginning of the chorus is by David Paich
I'm pretty sure that keyboard track was Paich and Steve Porcaro combined. It had organ and piano in it; Paich played most of the "organic" keys.
FANTASTIC!... but, Is it me or they missed David Paich's piano track?
