    Cast Iron Apothecary Cabinet with Repurposed Treadle Sewing Machine Drawers
    I was commissioned to repurpose some treadle sewing machine drawer into a set of apothecary cabinets. After some brainstorming I decided to use some of the cast iron structure as the framework for the cabinets. I also managed to use almost all of the rest of the original treadle for other upcycled furniture. (Not shown in this video)
    I hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!

    A nifty re-purposing of those drawers and I've always had a fascination with apothecary items so it certainly gets my approval. Retaining the the ironwork was a great choice and the resulting piece was filled with charcter. I've been really impressed with the variety of things you've generated from the original object so far and you seem to have hinted there's at least one more domestic item to eagerly anticpate as yet... :)

      Interesting question. You have a pretty good voice and are clear about what you are saying. I think it's up to your audience. Can you tell a difference in your analytics? Guys like Jimmy do both, depending on the audience (or who's paying for it). I think some sponsors prefer the more "how-to" narrated stuff.

    • @jubal1967
      @jubal1967 7 лет назад

      I'm a little surprised you didn't plane or sand a little off the top after you joined the four corners, and refinish the top, to make the seams less noticeable. Or did you want to preserve as much of the original finish as possible?

    • @Makebuildmodify
      @Makebuildmodify  7 лет назад +2

      I agree. but the client requested that I keep the original finish.

    • @mikeystojsic
      @mikeystojsic 7 лет назад +1

      should have made the top 4 pieces into a tiled pattern so it looked like the top was cut into quarters for a reason or atlas to make it look less like it was just popped together

    • @alphonsbretagne8468
      @alphonsbretagne8468 6 лет назад +1

      If there would have been enough original material, one could have cut the corners to triangles and place a rhomb (diamond) in the middle. It's done often to mask fragmented pieces.
      Nevertheless I like your work.

    Nice build. Whats your secret to welding cast iron or is it cast to cast does't stick (mig) but perhaps mild steel to cast does ok for light duty?

    • @Makebuildmodify
      @Makebuildmodify  7 лет назад

      No secret. I just try to make a big enough weld to handle the forces that will be applied. In this case not much force. There are plenty of cases where I try to avoid welding cast though.

    Sweet build! Was the client happy with it? Did you consider refinishing the top to hide those glue seams more? Not saying you should have... it just crossed my mind, but I don't know what I would have done because you'd obviously lose the original patina if you refinish.
