I am a Chinese who live in Guangzhou, I encounter the same situation days ago. I was just surprised and upset (like SerpentZA) that nobody went down to complain about the noise. I called the police, the noise stopped at 2:30 (don't know it's because of the police or they just finished work.)
This is about RIGHT AND WRONG, not about culture.
correction: there was a teenager who shouted from her window to complain. I believe in the young generation of China!

interesting, I'll agree ur first part, if that happen in US Asian guys probably beaten by construction works. but we Chinese are civilization， not rude like colonialism and racial white guys. in this case i would say we forgive this rude white guy, tho he act rude, but he got reasons. but in other case, he cant be lucky. btw, i dont think U.S. can colonize other country anymore, we got the power, guess who is boss in the world rn.

Bullshit, they would call the police and thats it. They wouldnt dare yelling to a stranger, much less steping outside of their homes at night. You could name ANY other nation and they would be more likely to act that way than germans.
They avoid confrontation... but will openly harass you, even gang up on you, to tell you that you're not allowed to film.
And yeah we've all lived that bit where people who are supposed to be friends/family side with a Chinese stranger who's actually doing them harm because, hey, you don't understand their culture ;D

I wouldn't waste my time complaining about petty things or short term events. Yeah I know it is irritating. Winston either has to move where he is or learn to be heavy sleeper. He has to figure out what he can do himself and fix the problem.
I have many chronic health problems. I live in the US. I got fed up with corrupt conventional health system and pharmaceutical brainwashed doctors so I decided to take responsibility and be my own doctor 30 years ago. That was the best thing I ever did. I did the same thing with greedy and corrupt dentists. I took responsibility and figured out how I could protect my own teeth. I would not trust any government sanctioned health care system in the world if they promoted vaccines. They have covered up large scale damage caused by vaccines.

Witnessed a serious traffic accident last night in HK where a man was shunted down the road like a rag doll, unconscious. What did everyone do? Kept their heads down and pretended not to see it. I was the only one who stopped and call the Police and ambulance. Makes me sick.

This is exactly why so many Hong Kong "Chinese" deny and say that they are not Chinese or try to distance themselves from Mainland China or just call themselves "Hong Kongers" only because deep down inside for the most part they are no different than their Motherland Chinese. Hell they`re from the same stock these HKers but it all boils down to self hate. This is why Brown Eye never has or rarely has Chinese people in his channel except for his immediate family members.
Bottom line it is "SELF HATE" for them case in point about your story about nobody doing anything to help out in this accident in HK just like the do in mainland China too.
He did a video about this recently, how people have tried to help and were charged by police or sued by the party that was hurt. So they just keep their head down, you should check out the video.
Sorry for hear about your experience. I am from Hong Kong and I definitely would have stopped and called the ambulance for that injured man. I wouldn't hesitate a bit. Hong Kong's laws won't get you into trouble in situation like this, some people are just selfish.
You can't expect too much from these people, though. The sad thing is that I am often the one who give seat to elderly people on underground train while many people just have their heads looking at their phones or pretend they didn't see... how sad...

The comments in this thread justifying the noisemaking in the middle of the night and sheepish people not sticking up for them selves -- pathetic. These "workers" are doing a job. they are getting paid. it's their problem to figure out how to do it safely and cost effectively. It's not the responsibility of the sleeping neighbors to take some of this load.
I am gonna side with the construction workers here more, even I don't like the lack of cohesive regulatory rules. I lived it Shanghai for 11 years and there were just constant construction noises everywhere and I got into some pretty bad fights with the workers, to the point of them swinging their hammers around my head. The noises could get so loud it would drive me close to insane and I had no where to run. Digging deeper, I learned that they DO NOT GET PAID, unless the work is done. Even when their work is done, sometimes the pay is delayed for months. The sooner they can finish, the sooner they can move onto another project, claim their shares, buy things, send money home.....it was still extremely annoying so I used ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones / cranking up Tiesto, etc., to try to shield the sound away, but I did not despise them much any longer. Look at them, they are mostly not educated and pulled in from the villages to work in the cities. Do you think they enjoy working at 5:00 am, in the rain and in the cold? Maybe you feel righteous and you are backed up with common-sense, but step back a bit you will forgive more and not shouting down at them like animals. You know they backed up and accommodated you because they can't communicate with you and you are white so out of respect, they give you more rooms. As a human being to another human being, having more empathy and understanding would make things much less explosive. At the end of the day, you live in their country, so before you pop your Western standards to their faces, try to understand why they do the things they do, their culture, their traditions. Perhaps when you end up being like them, you would not enjoy being shouted down like dogs, while jackhammering tiles without ear plugs. I am a psychologist. Judging from your video content, you do exhibit many of the negative narcissistic traits and living in China, it allows people like you to feel you are more superior to the Chinese. I have a friend who turns against every single Asian countries he's lived in after a period of time, because he kept using his frame of reference. If you are using this intention to pull along other viewers who are against China to make your living through RUclips, in order to create an echo chamber of hate, then you are pretty low. Snap out of it. I hate to see you turning 55 and look at your own legacy and think: gee, I actually contribute less than those guys who were jack hammering and my contribution to the society is not really information exchange, but mostly annoying or even hateful negative content punctuated and disguised by positive praises.
heeheemanofHK two wrongs don't make a right. Workers being exploited doesn't excuse them breaking the law and robbing people of their valuable sleep. You're justifying criminal behavior purely out of sympathy, but it's that kind of sympathy that ensures this sort of parasitic behavior is so common in China. And I doubt you're a real psychologist, or certainly not one from a respected institution. Being outspoken about your own rights is not a sign of narcissistic, nor is making simple observations about others.

Unlike these guys, they're ungrateful even with all China has given to them, their wives, their adventures and the views of their videos. China humbled me too in a lot of ways. After I read Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence people, I finally understand why these guys are so wrong in their approach

I'm sure the first thing someone from China who just set foot in the US and can't speak a lick of English wonders is "Why is everyone always mad at me?"
While I am endlessly baffled at the immense patience and tolerance most Chinese have of their fellow citizens, I think more people should stand up for their boundaries in China. It is good for any culture to do this to some extent.
I was on a plane back from Shanghai into LA and this one VERY over the top Chinese guy -- who must have never been in that situation before made himself RIGHT at home on a long international flight. He was in his late 50's/early 60's. He should have been old enough to know better but it was clear to me he was accustomed to a world where no one ever told him he was overstepping. To him, he was within his rights. For US standards however, he was testing the limits of everyone, even other Chinese:
Putting his nasty feet up on the bulkhead, several times literally hanging over the back of his seat like a 4-year-old loudly yelling back to his friends when most all of the passengers were trying to sleep, sneaking into Business class to take the food/drinks they had on buffet up there, rudely grabbing stuff off of the food cart when the meals came by, saying rude things to the flight attendants, getting right in everyone's bubble. I could tell there were a lot of other Chinese guys on the flight shaking their heads embarrassed by him but only the flight attendants politely tried to correct his behavior. NO ONE ELSE said anything until I finally had enough (he was sitting in the row in front of me).
Now when I'm in China, I'm very respectful of the cultural norms. This stuff happens on planes and (mainly) trains ALL the time within China -- Some guy screaming loudly into his phone in an otherwise crowded car, pushing, shoving, loud spitting, no filters, no bubble, all stuff perceived to be very rude by westerners. Most of this would be cause for immediate confrontation in the US but in China, I know it is different. It is not my place to impose my values on others when I'm the visitor. It is my place to be respectful within reason, even if the same is not given back.
That said, this guy was not in China anymore. He was on American Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles. After 8 hours of being patient, after the fifth time of him hanging over the seat, waking me up (with headphones on), yelling over the the head of the poor guy sitting next to me (who was hanging on to whatever patience he could muster), I let him know how rude he was being to his fellow passengers. He might not have understood my words but I guarantee you he understood my tone. I can imagine over half of the plane could have communicated this better than I could have but NO ONE did. They should have because he's going to be in for a shock at some point, better on the way there then in a situation where he gets hurt by someone who is less sensitive to cultural differences.

Sad to know this. But I have to admit it's the case. I have to admit this though I am a Chinese too. At his age, they grow up from the riot of the Culture Revolution, during which there was no rule to follow in China. They're red guards, not knowing to follow rules and respect to fellows. Most of them are rude, stupid and selfish. I believe their belief is the rule of jungle. So... last year, I went back to China from Arlanda Airport in Stockholm. There was a Chinese tourist group. Most of them are around 60 years old. When boarding began, they swarmed at the gate, no line. The service ladies at the airport were very frustrated, and no use even though she yelled. I don't know why they're in a rush. They had tickets, and their seats are secured. Why don't they behave decently? That was an Air China flight, and no wonder most of foreigners choose to take SAS though it's not direct flight from Beijing to Stockholm. What a shame and embarrassment. Hope that everything will be better after most of them pass away.

I had a student in Shenzhen who moved to Milwaukee. About a week before he left, there was that race riot going on, maybe about 1 1/2 years ago. I'm from a crappy Midwest town, too - Rockford, IL. (Don't go there.)

As a Chinese from mainland, I can completely understand the feeling of "神州 Shenzhou" and I would say a large percentage of Chinese would have same feelings when they watch this video. And my opinion on this is that this a good case that shows a hint of fundamental differences between Chinese culture (maybe not only Chinese, but a majority of developing countries, especially Asian's) with the western culture. We Chinese need to have a discussion on the following questions: 1. If you were him, how would you handle the situation? 2. Would this kind of confrontation make our society better? Further, should we "import" this kind of altitude to our society? 3. Is there a way to solve these issues within in Chinese value system?

Yes; good, constructive comment. Evidently, even if some of those who have posted comments disagree that the societal norms of other countries should be observed by Chinese citizens, the Chinese government views "how others see us" an important consideration. A good example is the China National Transportation Administration's issuing of the booklet "Guide To Civilised Tourism", which deals with the expected standards of conduct for Chinese citizens, both when travelling within China, and when visiting other countries.
I'm a foreigner living in China. And I cannot agree more on your comment, Usually people react on their established values. I believe the guys on this video are good guys, Nd they believe they are doing the right thing. However, If we foreigners want to contribute to China, first thing to respect is the Chinese culture. You cannot respect something you don't know. There is a lot more to learn on the Chinese culture by foreigners that want to live in China.

Yes you are right he could have complainedin a different way, but I don't criticize his manner. It was effective. Like it or not.
The topic here is how chinese handle confrontation, and the issue is not being really discussed , because chinese try to avoid confrontation, if two or more people confront each other, there is "blood" all the way to the last consequence. Confrontation creates enemies. Even if you don't like people, you try to avoid enemies. Making an enemy is the last thing you want to do. Problems are solved on the back stage to avoid confrontation.
I'm thinking about my experiences in Thailand; confrontation is either ignored by one party or a fight ensues. The Thais can be extremely sensitive to foreigners who stand up for themselves. Great topic Winston and C Milk!

This reminds me of my dickhead neighbor with his dogs. I live in a trailer park where we are squeezed in really tight and on all our rental contracts it days you can only have one small dog. But my neighbor "saved" three dogs and two were not small, but very big, noisy, and aggressive, barking all the time, day and night.
When I heard them barking they would stop, but always start barking again later for about a month and people were critisizing me and getting into arguments with me about it cause I was the only one to complain or yell at the dogs.
Then one day they started barking as usual in the morning and I knew that my neighbors weren't there and I totally flipped out on the dogs. I ran up to their fence and leaned over it, pointing my finger at them, screaming at the top of my lungs, "shut the fuck up you stupid fricking dogs!" And they started whimpering and cowering and they literally became scared to even look at me in the eyes.
Now a year later those dogs are still usually quiet as a mouse. Sometimes they'll get agitated and bark at people walking by or something and it's just hillarious now because a few times in the year since then and now I've heard other people try and yell at the dogs to shut up and they just keep barking and I let it go on for a minute or two and then I just crack my window and just say, "shut up." In my normal voice and they instantly get quiet and stay quiet.
When I first moved here people used to be really cocky with their dogs and you could hear them all around the trailer park and there were even kids running in front of cars and being disrespectful, throwing trash around, a kid even got caught setting fire to another families trailer cause he didn't like their kid for bullying him or whatever and no one could ever effectively get any of the dogs to shut up or the kids to behave.
But ever since I got those dogs to shut up and especially now a year later that they're still quiet and barely ever bark now whenever a dog barks anywhere in the entire trailer park you can now hear people yelling at the dogs to shut up and the whole trailer park is quiet now.
And as a side effect the kids now never throw trash around or act like little maniacs or disrespect adults anymore. Now they're so polite and tell me to have a nice day when before they'd just as soon spit on me or any adult here.
I guess the kids are now so completely terrified of me that they think I'm going to like beat them up or something if they don't behave. Lol. I'm not sure how that happened but I guess kids and dogs just naturally respect what they fear.
It was really funny that something so amazing happened from that and a few people have even come up to me and thanked me for yelling at the dogs.
When I was in college, every time I went to study in classroom, there were always some lovers sitting at the back and making out, loudly. Obviously most students in the classroom felt annoyed, but no one spoke out. I was the only one that reminded the noise makers. I was tired confronting to bad people alone and facing danger so many times. I found this happened all the time and realized it is the characters of our people. I understand why china has such a totalitarian society. Living among these week people is miserable. I feel shamed of my country. and I know this nation has no hope as long as people are this kind of slaves.
So basically everyone does whatever they want in chinaa

Mateus Mahumane - I don't think this is necessarily the case. White Westerners are pretty keen to boss each other around too. I live in Australia and we are like that too. There is always letters to the paper with people trying to dictate to others, people calling the council to dob in others and some of us will just police each other face-to-face say on public transport. We are a fairly combative people but we often think we are standing up for justice when we do it. We get a pickle up our ass and feel we have to make things right, whatever we think right is. It has been successful for us at various points in history and sometimes perhaps we have gone too far with it. I don't think for most white folks we care what colour the other person is, it's not about oppressing minorities it's just a cultural thing.

And yes we East Europeans were slaved, slaughtered and humiliated by the Mongols but we would have still confronted those disrespectful Chinese/Mongoloids. We are not cowards never been. Mine as well. I lived in Hong Kong both before (when stuff like this rarely happened) the Brits left and after. This type of shit slowly became commonplace after the handover and as someone who lived on the second floor I can relate as well. Not sure how your or my opinion from experience can be called racist but whatever😕
In Singapore, the police is quite effective in this area about noise pollution. I have called them twice so far to curb excessive noise. However one area which I am helpless about are smokers smoking in non smoking area. Most people generally do not confront these smokers, probably for fear of escalating into violence as most smokers adopted the alpha behaviour when smoking. She could probably sleep through it. If that's the case, the fact that he couldn't basically makes him exactly the same as the noise he's trying to stop, which makes it annoying for her. I could be wrong, though. In either case, you don't ever get points for arguing with your wife.
You pick your battles. If you stand to lose more by winning, you have to pragmatically make a choice. If pragmatism isn't a part of your life, then you're right. There's no reason to defer the upper-hand for the sake of peace.
The fear of confrontation in China is really an extension of a larger fear of authority figures. ie. keep your head down, melt into the crowd, don't draw attention to yourself or bad things may happen. It is counter intuitive to Western thinking, but avoiding any or all confrontation in China is an embedded survival trait. Unfortunately, when something does come up where legitimate intervention is valid, (someone collapsing on a street, someone breaking up crates at night) the non-interventionist conditioning remains very strong. On the flip side, when someone does show up and begins to rave at the indiscretion (an angry Winston in fluffy slippers) then they assume the authority figure role and can stop the submissive workers. (whereas in the West, that same worker may say "Screw you old man in fluffy slippers. let me introduce you to Mr crowbar" Give em hell guys. Sometimes the cows in the next field here moo at night and that can be annoying.

I live in a Dublin suburban area.
One time, I was woken up at 3am on a Thursday morning by the sound of two guys singing on top of their lungs, playing a guitar plugged into an amp.
They sang the same folksong several times, I don't know if it was some kinda rehearsal for a pub gig or whatever, but it drove me insane.
Unfortunately I couldn't figure out exactly which apartment/house it came from and I wouldn't want to wake up the wrong neighbors, so I just had bury my head in the pillow until I needed to go to work.
I can't recall the last time I was that angry in my life.
I have moved to a different area since then, I live in a more posh area now where people have manners and common sense.
Maybe its because im British and we write strongly worded letters instead of fighting, but i felt like people in China were quite confrontational towards each other, i saw quite a lot of shouting matches in the streets and queues.
Will in China, language can kill one person, even a family. this is why people from Chinese (including Taiwan) enjoy spending time on arguing on the internet, it makes them satisfied.
Perfectly stated. I observed males openly physically abusing women in public, entitled people arguing and chest prodding police officers regarding parking offenses etc. I observed conflict there often and on a regular basis.

I can only offer that a mob of (fairly poor) Australian students in the late 80s encountered similar problems & we got just as incensed. The thing that was drummed into us in those days was diplomacy, diplomacy. So even when it was 1 in the morning & some uncaring someone had done what they promised they wouldn't & stuffed us all up. Someone would produce a bottle of beer, someone else would engage them in conversation & often there'd be a song or a series of jokes & there would be rapport. Then, the conversation would get round to who was the boss/decision maker/person who had the authority to stop this happening. We didn't have mobile phones but a few times we went to their house & woke them up - bosses seem to always find a way not to be on the late night shift. If that didn't work, suddenly we weren't the friendly Aussies. We would go & get the cops & bring them there.
Cops don't like being dragged out @ 2am much either but by that stage, we had rapport w' the cops & we would stand there & defend the people stuffing us up making sure the blame went on & to the boss.
That sort of reputation gets around...

Workers in any countries in the west have to follow rules and you are not allowed to do noisy work late at night or before a certain time in the morining for the obvious reason that you disturb people in their home if you do! If the same situation happened where I live, I would do exactly the same as he did. But where I live, that will not happen.

When I went to college, I lived in a dorm that had perpetual construction outside. Unlike in this case, they were doing construction during the mornings but I can still kinda relate to Winston's struggle if you know anything about college students: we liked to stay up late to party or study and would often sleep in till like 11 in the morning if we didn't have morning classes. Unfortunately, the construction would often start around 7 or 8 in the morning and I ended up resorting to earplugs for almost an entire year. The earplugs did the trick, but unfortunately, they became a habit for me. To this day (18 years since freshman year of college), I have a lot of trouble sleeping without earplugs (unless I'm dead tired like not having slept at all the previous night or something.)
So before taking on the suggestion of using earplugs to drown out the noise, consider the risk of it becoming a lifetime habit.

I must give you a thumb up on this. Because we individually cannot control how things going, and we normally don't want any potential troubles (we think it would be unworthy if any people get hurts), so we usually choose to endure cowardly, or call police or security guards to confront for us (we usually won't do that by ourselves to avoid conflicts).You were lucky, because who you were confronting seems very nice, not so rude and aggressive. And another important reason is you are a foreigner, common lower class people do not want make troubles with foreigners.
normally，Chinese students go to class at 6am while teachers have to come even early. As a Chinese, I am truly sorry about what happened but those people who made noise also don’t have to do it. It just because they need job for living. To Be honest, our society is not well-developed (or organized) yet. It definitely an great for my country and our community to have more immigrants to improve our life quality. Again, sorry about what happened. There is cultural conflict and social problems but We believe Things would be improved just like what we did In the past 20 years. Hope you guys could have more great experiences on China. I'm curious as to whether people record or take photos of the people making noise and put it on a blog or email the company or something instead of going and talking to them?

This is interesting. I feel the same living in the U.S. as an expat from China.
No one except me would confront the group that are making outragoues noice in libraries/study rooms and the neighbors that still having loud parties after 2AM in apartment complexes.
I have called school securities, apartment courtesy patrols, and even polices numerous times over the 8 years I lived in Ohio and California. I haven't seen any Americans do the same.
Growing up in northern China (people are wild, like Texan), my parents always tell me to stay away from the troubles and do not mess with the people you do not want to mess with. One more issue is better than one less issue as "多一事不如少一事" in Chinese. However, I never listened. When you have to fight for your right, you got to do it. You cannot expect the shameless people to do the right thing without others confronting them.
Texans are actually very friendly and empathetic, at least from my experience. Many stereotypes against Texans in this country are quite unfair, I would say, but the political division is deep.

In larger metro areas like LA, polices are too busy doing other more serious stuff and do not always respond for noise complaints. Even if they come in may be an hour and half, they cannot do much either. If the resident choose to not open the door, they cannot force open it. The apartment will only vacant those tenants if they get filed complaints for more than 3 - 4times in a row and it seems no one but me is complaining. It's a very large complex in downtown LA with more than 200 units.
Also there was a construction site right across the street (632 S Bixel St, Los Angeles), some times they start using noisy equipments as early as 6AM and semi trucks came to deliver building materials at 4AM. There is nothing we can do about it since it did not violate the city code.
So I am thinking maybe it's not Chinese people do not like to confront, it's residences of large cities who become more tolerative?
Living in busy, crowed part of the large cities is always tough, no matter which country you are in.

this is a really nice video guys, thanks for the info! this gets me thinking how I should not be passive at times where I live as well, as I am not always confrontational myself but only when its unbearable or too much, like i was on a school bus to work (im a teacher) and the dude kept driving fast especially at bumps in the road and that is gonna cause serious back problems and makes us literally fly from our seats, eventually i spoke to him saying take it easyyy slowww down then he is like i just want to get to guys to your destination, im like not like this you arent, then he finally slowed down since, everytime i get on hes like oh ur here im like yeah? xD so yeah uprooting the problem and dealing with it is sometimes or always a necessity rather than just letting it linger and not doing squat, there is nothing to fear when it comes to confrontation.

This is a symptom of a lot of Asian cultures. A village I used to live in over here in Thailand had loudspeakers set up throughout to make announcements and at least they would wait until 7am to do some of their announcements, it was still way annoying to get woken up by them. To make matters worse, there were a ton of street dogs all over and sometimes at night they would get into barking matches. So happy to have moved into a neighborhood that has neither of these issues. Even I consider myself pretty tolerant of noises, that shit was intolerable.
Your recount reminded me of something. I am in UK and a couple of years ago, used to live with a Vietnamese girl. It so happened that the neighbour locked their little dog outdoors overnight. The dog was barking, yelping, howling so loudly through the night, I couldn't sleep! Tired and stressed out the next morning, I told my Vietnamese housemate "That dog barking was outrageous, wasn't it? And must have disturbed the good night sleep of whole neighbourhood!" And her reply was "What dog was barking?"

I have the same issue with my wife (Chinese) as you Winston. She will get mad at me, saying: "Don't worry about things you can't change/have no control over!" It seems that in China, many people are conditioned to not know what they can or cannot affect, or they just pass the buck, as Cmilk said.

As for noise, you are absolutely correct, many companies will do the construction work all through the nights with a special license(little cost for them) for many days. It is useless for us to call the police. But I was talking about the confrontation of a story in the videos, but I forgot which one.

Wow, thank you so much. I got such a lot out of this post. I thought i was the only one in the whole of China who confronted people about anti-social behaviour at ridiculous times of the day and night. It often seems to me that the majority of Chinese people don't even notice the hideous problems with noise. My wife is exactly the same as yours; just put in ear plugs and take a pill, ffs. I've had so much trouble from these confrontations, because i'm an idiot and can't speak Chinese, but this really helped - thanks again.

In Canada, our church received phone warnings, letters and visits from the municipal govt after the senior apartment building next door complaining the noise after 8:00pm (the official hour is 10pm) for the functions they held in the church:))
I witnessed a public confrontation on my last trip to China. Two scooters collided at an intersection and one of the drivers (the bigger one) was very mad and wanted to fight. He kept pushing and hitting the other guy on the head, but despite his provocation, the 2nd guy didn't fight back. He just allowed himself to be beat on while others watched. I started to film it, but I noticed both of them glancing at me and decided against it. They probably would have taken out their frustration on me...at the loss of face.

Yee Leung That's not what I'm saying. I was surprised that police didn't show up and settle it. In the U.S., law enforcement would have come soon and settled it. The drivers would have just stayed calm and let their insurance handle things.
