  • I recently published my new book The Eight Best Retirement Locations in Thailand. Thailand is one of the most popular countries to live in for retirees and expats from all around the world, and there are plenty of reasons why that is so. For pennies in the pound, you get low-cost living where your income or pension will stretch much further, a tropical climate, beautiful palm-fringed islands, friendly smiling people, inexpensive housing and affordable high-quality medical care. A country where Buddhist monks, golden beaches, palm trees, monkeys and elephants become part of your everyday life. The problem with Thailand is you’re spoilt for choice. So where do you start to look for the best place to live or to spend your golden years? The book is a comprehensive look at eight towns that I consider to be the best areas for expats to live in Thailand. Of course, where you may want to live in this fascinating and diverse country will depend on your outlook on life, hobbies and the lifestyle that you want to achieve in your new country and many more towns might tick the boxes for where you may want to live These are just my personal favourites, places that I have either lived in or spent a considerable amount of time in. My eight favourite places for retirees in Thailand in no particular order are:
    • Chiang Mai
    • Koh Samui
    • Bangkok
    • Phuket
    • Hua Hin
    • Krabi
    • Chiang Rai
    • Pattaya Book

Thanks Deek thanks for your input and support. Some people like the music intro others not so much as everyone is different. I am in the process of starting a new venture as RUclips has never really worked out for me and the views on my videos after three years of trying don't warrant the amount of time, effort and money that I put into making them.

Good luck with the new book Ged. Another place I discovered was sriracha, and just outside patong is tritrang and Karon beach great when trying to escape the tourist traps.

I lived in Rawai for six months. It was the best place for me on the island. I'm starting a new online magazine on living Thailand within the next few weeks look out for it

Personally Ged boy , I think Hua Hin ticks most of the boxes for me out of the places I've been . I always like to visit the main tourist places Pattaya , Bangkok etc but Hua Hin seems to be the most likeable for me anyway. . Great to hear you pronounce them all what I consider the right way also I might add 😂🇹🇭 keep smiling mate & keep those jars flowing 😂🍺🍺🍺👏

Hi Shaun. Hua Hin due to its central Thailand location and being a smaller town than many is an ideal place to live. Regarding the pronunciation I am often pulled up for saying Whahin but on the local radio many djs and advertisers call it the same but others call it Hooahin. My first girlfriend was born in the town and called WhaHin so that's good enough for me.
      Cheers

Jed not criticising I watch all your videos but cut the long intro out mate and add music what will make people not want to watch your videos . Your good guy but sort music and long introductory out it will improve your channel
Keep up good work 🙏. I want to see your channel grow .
I been a subscriber from day one but you deserve more subscribers it’s only a tip in my opinion

Thanks Mathew. I appreciate your comment as I love constructive criticism as it guides me where I am going wrong. The problem is it's a catch 22 situation. I have been doing this channel for 3 years and I have never made 1 baht from it but the channel costs me a lot of money in camera equipment, apps for editing, travel expenses when traveling to make videos around Thailand, accommodation etc etc. The reason for the long introduction is that I try to sell my books to make money for the channel expenses as being on a pension its difficult to pay for everything. I am in the process of starting a retirement magazine for expats wanting to retire overseas. If that works out then I will drop the RUclips channel as sometimes only getting a few hundred views for all of the effort I put in it hardly seems worthwhile.
Thanks once again for your input and advice. I appreciate it
      Cheers
      Ged

Ged, you clearly love Samui, but prefer to live in Hua Hin - reasons ?

    • @thailandmyland...retiringd2351
      @thailandmyland...retiringd2351  2 месяца назад +2

      Hi Stewart. A few reasons
Samui gets very busy with tourists over the high season and the island is crazy as it is a small island and was never meant for that many people at one time. With thousands of tourists whizzing around the island on motorbikes probably not having driven one before and with the higher prices that many places charge in the high season it's just not liveable. And to be honest I don't like farang tourists much which is why I have never been to places like Benidorm. Samui is also a long way from everywhere else that I like to visit in Thailand ... with the exception of Phuket and Krabi, where Hua Hin is central. What I try to do is live in Hua Hin as a base and go to Samui a few times a year for a month or so in the low seasons. That way I get the best of both worlds. Over the 7 years l have lived in Thailand I have probably lived in Samui for three of them. During the two years when I lived there during covid it was bliss with hardly a tourist to be seen 😂 😂 😂
      Cheers
      Ged

@@thailandmyland...retiringd2351 Thanks Ged, trying to suck up as much info as poss over next 3 years before i retire to Thailand - at moment i have Hua Hin, Samui,Koh Chang and Krabi as my possibilties - without ever having been to Thailand ! - but intend to do a 2 month holiday there next year to suss all of the above (and others). Key factors for me are 1) Beach 2) (quieter) town/city- which i why i might add Prachuap to the list 3) Nightlife but not raucous , overdone, but nice barsand cheap local food 4) Sunset (i'm not an early person) which might rule out Hua Hin. 5) Fewer Farangs the better.
BTW your guides have been so helpful.
Also, what do you suggest for Med insurance for retirees.

@@stuartwallace7536 Hi Stewart I am glad that my videos are helpful to you. It’s a great idea to come here for a few months and check everywhere that you think might be a good fit for you and it seems that you are looking for similar things that I was looking for when I arrived here to retire.
Regarding health insurance. Personally, I don’t have any as I am fit and healthy with no underlying conditions. It's very expensive once you get to retirement age and the premiums rise every year as you get older. In the seven years that I have lived here, I have hardly been sick and if I had been paying for health insurance over that time it would have cost me a fortune. I decided to pay with my own money when/if I ever need it. Something that you should know is if you apply for a retirement visa from your own country at the Thai Embassy often they require you to have health insurance as part of the application but if you enter Thailand on a tourist visa and apply from within Thailand then they don’t ask for it for some reason. Of course, this can change at any time.
I did a video a few years ago about health insurance and I have attached a link to it
