- Guatape is one of the top places to visit in Colombia and after going myself, I can see why! This is such an idyllic spot with amazing nature, colorful cobblestone streets and a HUGE ROCK you can climb just for fun ;) It is also one of the safest tourist places to visit in Colombia, so if you are looking to get some great Instagram shots without worrying about someone snatching your phone, this is the place to go. You can do a day trip from Medellin or spend a few nights in a cute bed and breakfast in the town site. Hope you enjoy the video! xx

Living in a small town with a stunning mountain backdrop, Guatape makes me appreciate the virtue of a safe, tranquil and down to earth life. When you get out of the big city, you don’t really miss it much and this is a gorgeous place! The Go Pro pictures don’t do it justice. Its a perfect retirement spot for people wanting to live out their lives. Would been a shame had you ended your stay in Colombia with Medellin. In all honesty, this is the perfect coda to your trip there and Guatape is definitely a place you have to go to once in your lifetime. In my opinion, getting away from the typical tourist trap was worth it. Thanks for the memories and sharing with us the highlights of a beautiful country! Safe travels and be blessed.

Sorry, Medellin, but it looks like you're going to have to make room at the top of my list of the best towns in Colombia 😁 It's funny that my first thought was - when I saw your stories from (Insta-)Guatape - that the spectacular views from that rock must largely compensate for the lack of opportunity to shoot from a drone like at Meteora 😍 And even though it was only a day trip, this is definitely one of my favorite videos in your Colombian series 👏🏻

Hi Alina and everyone. Guatapé is pretty cool 😎 and safe for foreigners to visit. I've gone there like around 10 times in my life. Highly recommend that picturesque town plus Peñol Rock.
I visited la grande piedra back in 1974 with a friend. The staircase was much more simple and there was not a man-made lake below. An older woman had a shack at the top and sold rum and coke and souveniers. I still have the plastic viewer with a photo of the rock. I am glad you were able to see this yourself! There are a ton of things to do in Guatapé but some of the most popular include climbing the El Penol rock, going on a boat tour, wandering the town, and visiting waterfalls and natural swimming holes!

Glad you made it to Guatapè. It is a beautiful place. I also went on a tour which is a great way to see it. Part of my tour was by boat on the lake where we saw the old center of the city of El Peñol with a cross sticking up in the water. We also saw several houses including Pablo Escobar’s burn out house. At the rock they did not have a no drone rule then so I was able to fly it. I made sure it was ok with the tour guide. He said yes and suggested I take it to the top of the rock and fly from there. Once up there I decided not to because of all the wiring up there so I flew it when I came back back down. While aligning the gyros I was surprised with the interference but eventually got everything aligned and flew it from the parking lot. It was great. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

Alina, if you take a close look at the house tiles as in 11:16 in Guatape they'll tell you the history of the town itself.

What a wonderful showing you experienced here, Alina! Really brought back some wonderful memories for me as I grew up living on the waterfront being a member of a professional water skiing team in my teen years. Such a wonderful town that was, so colorful and SAFE which is a great memory you created for a lot of people also. The music you chose is great, the people you were around said many things that I'm sure you also felt. Thanks so much for going there and sharing this with us. *FIRST:* previously the ascent to the Peñol stone was by wooden stairs and without handrails or railings, (something that must have been extremely terrifying and chilling for its ascent),
and *SECOND:* only in Colombia a jewel of nature like that stone has private owners, which is totally unusual, ridiculous and unfair since the stone is a natural wonder and should not have an owner, it should be a public and national asset.

Alina, this was very good choice. Harriet and I have been. We enjoyed climbing The Rock. Surrounding the lake there were so many places to just chill out. We did that as well as walk along Guatape Centre decorated with Zocalos. We spent a couple of days going back and forth from Medeliin. Great memories of the area. I've been at Guatapé once, and it's a really nice place. I don't have any suggestions regarding Guatapé, just explore and enjoy, but, as other people have said in the comments, if you come back to Colombia I strongly suggest to visit little towns all around. For example, Ciénaga, which is between Santa Marta and Barranquilla, La Playa de Belén in Norte de Santander (with the amazing Estoraques), Salento and Cocora Valley, Barichara in Santander, Villa de Leyva and Ráquira in Boyacá, Honda in Tolima, or Guatavita (another flooded town, but much colder than El Peñol) and its lagoon, which are near Bogotá.
Looked absolutely brilliant! Smaller groups often better for tours.

Amazing! You shoulg try Santander. It's amazing, beautiful and cheap... Colonial small towns, wonderful views and food. Barichara it's a remarkable town to visit, along with Velez, San Gil, Curití... All need to do is arrive to Bucaramanga city, the capital

I'm so happy you could visit Guatapé! I strongly recommend Cocora Valley and Barichara but if you're out of time, then maybe next time.
