  • Bogota is not on most people's bucket list travel destinations.. but maybe it should be? If you are an experienced traveler or have a local to show you around, this capital city has a lot to offer. Join me as I spend a couple weeks touring around, eating some amazing Colombian food and learning more about the history. You could say that Bogota is the gateway to the rest of the country, so I'm very excited to see what comes next!

I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

I agree I was born and raised in London and I feel Bogotá is something like what London was in the 50’s. For someone that loves culture, it’s a city that’s affordable to experience this especially at the higher end without too much pretence.

Most people think of mountain destinations as small towns and living in one at the same altitude as Bogota, you can definitely notice a big city has a lot more going on. The temperatures will rarely exceed 90 in the summer and the nights will be around the 50s. Bogota is that happy medium though when one goes to Cartagena on the coast, it will hotter and more humid and December is probably the perfect time to swim in the Atlantic! Columbia is a lot like Miami the opposite of what people think of Buenos Aires being the Paris of South America. So much more to document and that couldn’t be put in one video. Looking forward to your future discoveries in Colombia!

Visited Bogota for 2-days on a business trip some years ago. Have to admit that I was apprehensive on going at first but quickly wished I had arranged to stay longer! Fortunately my local colleagues arranged a car to drive me around one evening. I was also able to also visit both the Gold (Museo del Oro) and Botero museums which were fantastic. The food in the restaurants was incredible too.

I LOVE BOGOTA!!! I will say that it took me time (probably over a year living there) before I completely fell in love with the city - the city is so big, and it takes time to get to know!!! People are more reserved than in other parts of Colombia in terms of making friends, but of course they're just being cautious. My favorite parts of the city are La Cinemateca (the local film theatre), DametuLengua in Chapinero for Language exchange and soo many events, Gato Gris (restaurant with live music), Plaza la Perseverancia, THEATRON, and just all of the fun pop up events all over the city!! It's so diverse and definitely not everyone's primary definition of "beauty" like Medellin, but it is so full of life and culture and you just never run out of things to do or places to explore!!

Alina, just saw your new video. You are totally correct in that if you plan well and take the common sense precautions, you will be ok. Happy to see that you followed my recommendation on Juan Valdez. It is a chain, but for pure coffee such as americano or lattes and cappuccinos, it is very good. I noticed that you were drinking Club Colombia beer. I think it is very good. They also make a red and a black beer. The ajiaco looked great. Yes, you will get avocado and rice with your ajiaco. They blend ver well. You will enjoy Cartagena. Just stay watch out for the street hustlers. They are intense and do not respect the fact that you say “no” to them.

Most tourist never visit the following places that are really worthwhile. Biblioteca Virgilio Barco, Parque Simón Bolivar and the Botanical Garden, this three near each other. Museo Botero and Gold Museum are a most. In Chapinero Restaurante El Chato is excellent and for more upscale budget Leo Restaurante is the best. Criterion is also great.

People from Medellín have the most toxic and stupid regionalism in the whole country. Please don't believe their narrow-minded and limited perceptions.

I live here as a foreigner, that was a well rounded video. I live in the suburbs, much safer out here, but also plenty of people with money so a lot going on still. There's a whole world 5 day travelers would be unaware of... A lot more to uncover, a lot for families, i left London for Bogota many years ago.

This video annoys me in the best way. The amount of hate and negative connotations aimed at Colombia internationally especially from North Americans is insurmountable. So much so even immigrant Colombians develop complexes and believe it’s too dangerous to visit. With the immense worry that if anything should happen to their international acquaintance that’s one more negative image they have to contend with for the rest of their lives. I find this sad and detached from reality and Colombians with their kind hearts in general do not deserve this treatment.

I agree with you. Ive been there in colombia, particularly in bogota. The country has so much to offer. A lot beautiful places. The preserved culture and tradition. Its just being drawn to negative narrative that the country is dangerous due to what happened in the past. My husband is a colombian and he himself warned me about bad people there. But i like to go back there. I also love the food and drinks. And yeah they usually serve the food with avocado. Intersting.

Did you get sketched out on that tram up the mountain?? I was freaking out a little coming down on that rickety thing. EDIT: It looked like you hiked it. View is awesome and there is a lot of history in that Bolivar square, especially during the "cocaine years."

Haha yeah I hiked and it was hardcore with the elevation. The tram did look sketch but the cable car looked decent.
