The bugs must be a seasonal thing. We were there in June and there were not any bugs to speak of. Nice to see that we are are not the only ones who love people watching!

    • @EricandSarah

Yeah they must be! We met people who when not long before or after and never had issues… must’ve been a short term issue 🤷🏽‍♀️

Those 'bugs' are the 'hormiga culona' (Atta laevigata) future queens on their nuptial flight. These large ants are considered a delicacy, salted and roasted. I have tried them!

Whoa! Guatape is the coolest tourist town that I have ever seen. The giant hill, the reservoir, and the main streets full of tourists taking photos were fascinating. One would expect that something could be done to keep the bugs down on the observation deck at the top of Guatape Hill. This video showed what the town of Guatape, Colombia had to offer tourists!

It really was! It’s very touristy for a good reason (which isn’t always the case). Really loved it there!

I was there about 10 days ago and it was a bit colder so no bugs and alot easier to do el penol. Personally Guatape was one of my favorite towns.

From what I have read, those designs on the bottom of walls there are from temporary flooding that occurred in the city itself when they built the dam. After it all drained down, the lower parts of those walls were damaged. So since they had to repair them anyway, they decided to make something special of them, and started creating these "3-D murals"! How interesting is that!!!!

I wonder if someone with acrophobia could handle those stairs. Enjoyed! Thanks. BTW, we just had a 6.8 quake in Ecuador. Building collapsed in Cuenca 4 blocks from me. Check it out!

Hmmm not too sure. Although thankfully the stairs felt very secure and not overly steep so maybe it would be okay?

I have been to the top 3 times and I have never seen a bug. Vendors have never been an aggravation, either. Love to visit Guatape'! It's more tame during the week. Weekends are crowded.

I took 3 of my friends from Medellin who had never been there before and we had a wonderful time for 3 days / 2 nights. Pick your travel time carefully and don't make the mistake we made. Epiphany is a National Holiday the weekend after New Years. It was VERY crowded. We still had fun, but I would never go back on a National Holiday as it is very popular with Colombians as well. I prefer off season travel to avoid the worst crowds anywhere I travel.

Yes ist a trap because if you stay there a couple days you will not want to come back! What a beautiful place. If you really want to get to know it, rent a boat and go your self explore the lake by yourself. There are a lot of places to visit, don’t stay only in town.

  • @__Queen_of_Hearts__

Where did you launch the drone from? There were no drone signs all around. We were also hesitant to launch further away because there were several helicopter tours happening around.

3:13 That's the 'hormiga culona' (Atta laevigata), which means 'big-assed ant'. The future queens are large, and fly off to found new colonies. They are considered a delicacy. Once caught they are washed in salt water and roasted.
