You seem to not understand how Shelby works. They're a massive manufacturer. You keep talking about Dodge wouldn't have made this and that. Dodge made the base of this thing, nothing else. Shelby buys 300 of them then designs and makes (or has made) all the upgrade parts. The center console wouldn't have been in a Dodge, you wasted your time looking for it. Shelby bought 300 of them from an aftermarket company, it's just a random generic van front seat console.
I knew about this as a kid when this was featured in the classic PS2 and Xbox video game Test Drive Off-road Wide Open! So I was probably the very few and rare kids to ever know about this Shelby Durango in existence!
My neighbor had one back in the 90s. Really nice. Same blue with stripes. I don’t know if there were different Shelby versions, but it was a Shelby Durango. I know that.
My art teacher in 9th grade had one of these and he loved it so much, I never knew it was such a unique quirky vehicle. Love you Mr. P! from Long Island
Back in the 90s I had a 94 Supra TT , Black with No Wing, with a few mods: downpipe, turbotimer, greddy exhaust, nothing major, but it went pretty good! I was on a pretty empty Toronto neighbourhood street around 11am and was approaching a Stop Sign when a Blue Dodge Dakota (The truck version of this ^^ SUV) pulled beside. We both looked over and decided to GO! All I saw was Truck Bed and License Plate! It was one of the fastest trucks I had ever seen. It just hooked and quietly fcked off! When we got to the next light he told me it had the 5.9 but with a Turbo Kit he put together running 18 pounds of Boost. His BOOSTED V8 wrecked my I6 TT. LOL!
Hey Doug that's an aftermarket center console between the rear seats, it might even be an older version of the "Clutter Catcher" that was sold at WalMart back in the day.
I have stared at one of these in someone's driveway in my neighborhood while passing by without knowing what it was for YEARS, and now I know how special of a car it is. Super cool!

There's one local to me in very similar shape that I see at car shows with a plaque that details all the changes/upgrades that never fails to put a smile on my face.
I remember many years ago I was at a dodge dealership and the salesman and I hopped in a Durango from this era to go look at another vehicle and he told me never buy a Durango they are junk. At the time I couldn’t believe the salesman told me that. Only honest salesman I’ve come across.

The steering is nimble, the ride is Cadillac but you feel like you’re in a tank because of how wide and heavy they are, and it all mixes to give you that smile Doug had on his face.
My first car was a dodge durango 2002 ! still the best naturally sounding V8, i never need to put an exhaust system on it ! but the Shelby was my dream for sure
Stacy Chrysler Dodge & Jeep in Owensboro Kentucky had one of these back in 1998-1999 when I was a salesman. It was crazy and especially since the blue Dodge viper coupe was so intriguing. This was the Hellcat Durango of the time.
"On the side of the engine bay we have the kenne bell optimizer computer, which doesn't sound or look as cool as the kenne bell supercharger but, its there to optimize the computer." Doug doesn't fail to make the funny remarks 😂😂
Someone in the company opened up their JC Whitney catalog (probably in the men’s room) and found that console. So they ordered 300 of them. I love looking at that catalog with its different parts and pieces for your car of choice.

Didn’t even know this was a thing until now. A neighbor of mine had one of these and I always thought it was just an aftermarket body kit with Shelby stickers slapped onto a Durango. Crazy.
Love these first gen Durangos so much. This and the Jeep ZJ 5.9 are truly peak 90s SUVs imo. Rugged, utilitarian, AND fast. It’s extremely wishful thinking, but I wish Stellants would someday build a modern Durango on a shortened RAM platform instead of a crossover. Make it a real SUV again. While they’re at it, they should give the JGC its straight axles back too.
My dream truck. I've had a Durango in my line up since I was 15, and last year I jumped on a low mile SRT8 Charger... 1 month before the first sale that was on C&B. And now, there's a 2nd one only months later... I'm gonna be kicking myself for years.
The supercharger is only 1/3 the size of a hellcat supercharger, but you are correct. Those old V8s had stupidly low compression ratios and poor flowing heads that limited power output greatly, and don't even get me started on how much power the drivetrain leeched from the motor too
My American mind doesn't get it either. It's a 90's vehicle with cheesy 90's ground effects and wheels. They should've dropped the wheels and ground effects and concentrated on performance, would've been so much nicer.
One of my close family members has a connection with someone who has an insane collection of Shelby vehicles made by the man himself, including a 1/1 prototype he designed from the ground up. I got to check them out and touch them. Amazing without even turning it on haha
If you squint incredibly hard at it, I can kind of almost sorta maybe kind of see it. But that thing is like, twice the size. Though, performance-wise, it's about as fast as a Forester XT
Any partnership with such a terrible manufacturer is an automatic fail. Dodge/Fiat/Chrysler/Jeep- vehicles of poor engineering, terrible resale, horrific reliability, and an overall embarrassment to be seen in let alone own.
I guess I'm over of "those"guys now, but ☝️ the 5.9 had 250HP in 03 the RT got 255. The roof rack replacement weren't actually anything different from the regular Durango just painted to match. Great video Doug. Glad you finally got one of these cool weird Durangos
It's weird how they went like 98% of the way there leaving out just a few bits. Such as not just making the hood vents functional (or at least marginally functional by at least being actually vent holes), and skipping a few trim pieces with the carbon fiber replacements (window/lock controls on the door, and the map light area at the top, are a few I noticed). Also Doug mentioning the octane knock warning sticker but not mentioning the quirkier related item right below it. The actual like... Knock guage system that measured knock from low to high (as if any is acceptable). I also would have liked to know if it was RWD or AWD/4WD. Durangos had an option for either, but would have been interesting to know if this version was only offered in RWD. Either way a pretty interesting vehicle. It wasn't even "fast" for the time with a 7.1 0-60mph time. A stock Grand Prix GTP of the same era would do 0-60 in 6.6 for example (and that's not a limited edition, or directly sport focused vehicle). Definitely fairly quick for an SUV of the time though, and the more impressive part is probably the massive brake/suspension upgrades, as well as the interior changes. I feel like they could have went the extra 2% more with getting at least a little more power out of it, as well as finishing out those extra details. Then it could have done the part, instead of just looking it. Still it's really a cool vehicle, and this one is definitely a time capsule version.
There's a mish mash of them. Some have the 2wd, some have the AWD, and some had the floor shifter. The 2wd and floor shifters are what I'm personally looking for.
It's crazy that they could only get 360hp from a 5.9l supercharged engine. A hemi with an intake could make more just a few years later without a supercharger.
The Hemi is light years ahead in design. The Magnum engines are essentially the same small block LA engines from the 60s-70s with EFI and a few upgrades.
The normal 5.9 mag only really made 245hp, after all it's just an iteration on the LA block from the 60s/70s. It's like the difference between a small block 350 and an LS
Never even knew this thing existed... and yes Doug, you are correct in saying that the wheels are the "let down" of the vehicle. Should have used the wheels off of the "special edition" 96 Ram that had the same paint scheme!!
You should review the 2000s Buick Rainer GNX, or the Saab 97X Aero. The luxurifued weirdest, and rarest performance SUV of the 2000s, and it was on the same platform as the Chevy Trailblazer
The Shelby Durango was a great one! On a similar topic, I had 2 1998 JGC 5.9's, one in white and one in Deep Slate Grey with a custom Deep Amethyst two tone. I tricked out the grey one with a bore and stroke from 360 to 408, aluminum heads, headers, reprogrammed ECU and a bunch of other stuff. That kind of power with full time 4WD was mind blowing! I was getting 0-60 times of about 4.5 seconds. That would suck your eyes into your skull!
The blue and white color scheme is more than just a callback to Shelby, it is the international auto racing color scheme for the US, similar to British green, German silver, or Italian red. Famous Mustangs and Corvettes also used the same color scheme.
D Schneider from Twisted Sister had one of these back in the day. I worked at the auto parts store when I was younger in Long Island and he'd always bring it up there. Really cool guy.
Gone in 60 seconds made me want a Shelby Gt500. couldn't afford Eleanor but ive owned 4 newer 500's and currently a Durango Hellcat, cool to see the crossover collaboration that Shelby had w/ Dodge even though he's better known for his work w/ Ford. The SP360 is very much an early Durango Hellcat concept

It almost looks like a Forester with that body kit. The big square square, blocky look. I love it
Dude that looks absolutely nothing like a Subaru.
If you squint incredibly hard at it, I can kind of almost sorta maybe kind of see it. But that thing is like, twice the size. Though, performance-wise, it's about as fast as a Forester XT
2:57 Doug the type of guy to roar when talking about a v8
Even carroll had said what he did with dodge around this time was a mistake and wished he had stayed in partnership with ford
Any partnership with such a terrible manufacturer is an automatic fail. Dodge/Fiat/Chrysler/Jeep- vehicles of poor engineering, terrible resale, horrific reliability, and an overall embarrassment to be seen in let alone own.
@@ozarkliving7263 Until they leave you in the dust with your mouth hanging open. We understand why you might be butthurt.
Really appreciate the videos Doug , long-term subscriber here. Buddy you really need to solve the echo issue, Thank you.
Best of luck 👍
The wheels and body kit look like something from AutoZone. The factory 5.9 RT Durango looked a lot better in my opinion.
Yeah the wheels look like they came from a tire store!
@@volvo09 Yeah, I was thinking the same. I've never liked chrome on any wheel really.
Now this is the old school Doug content I love to see!
I wish he didn’t sign the wheels, because now I would feel bad about replacing the terribly designed wheels with better looking ones
Yeah! They look like aftermarket wheels you'd buy at the tire store!
Definitely gives off an American Racing vibe
You could replace the wheels, but keep the "factory" ones as well
Anyone else binge watching Doug rn😁😁
The Rainer GNX was never produced. Just a show vehicle
@@jacobyo99 ohh okay
@@jonlosito2004 it was just the trailblazer SS and Saab 9-7x aero
I had the opportunity to work on one of these at a small town speed shop. We made it a 408 stroker and did some pully swaps. It was a monster
I much prefer the older car reviews like this, the new car reviews just feel like commercials
This is a collector vehicle in my opinion. Loved that 5.9 engine. In the truck. Really cool SUV. Not like these plastic eggs today.❤💜🧡💪😎
basically same power as the new toyota 4cyl. weve come a long way
Or even a 3 cylinder from a GR Corolla
Never stop these quirky reviews Doug you know us weird fans love them!
If a car could be the Gatorade blue flavour, this is the one.
I remember reading this in car magazines
good for you, no one cares... that isn't of any value to anyone
