I've seen a couple of videos online, but none of them were good. So I made this.

FAQ:
Q: Does this work on Emerald?
A: I have not tried it myself, but others have commented on this video, stating it should work on Emerald too.
Q: I do not have the Link option on my emulator.
A: First of all, that's not really a question. Second, if you downloaded the version I showed you in the video, you will have the link option.
Do NOT ask if this works on other versions than Leafgreen, as I will not answer those questions. This tutorial is specifically for Leafgreen and it may work on other games, but I did not try and I do not intend to. Try out yourself. If it works it works, if it doesn't, you need to find help elsewhere.

All you need to do is start up the game on your new vba link emulator, and go to file>import>batteryfile and find your .sav file (trust me it works, I just saved myself 60 hours on my Emerald version.) Hope this helps.

I tried to do so with my Fire Red save file, but the screen remains white and everything seems to be frozen. Also, when I try to open the game without importing the battery file, a message is shown, saying that my file was damaged and that data could not be saved.
WEEEEW!
Finally figured out how to trade on Pokemon Emerald using VBA LINK 1.8 without crashing. Follow these steps:
1. Set up the network as shown in the video BEFORE you load your ROM.
2. Make sure the "pause when inactive" function is turned ON until I say otherwise.
3. Import the rom and save file for both games.
4. Controlling ONE game at a time, talk to the receptionist lady at the trade center like in the video.
5. When asked would you like to become the leader or join, hover your cursor over leader or join but DO NOT CLICK IT YET.
6. Switch to your other game and do the exact same thing until asked to join or lead.
7. Hover cursor on whatever you didn't choose. (If game 1 is hovering over leader, game 2 hovers over join)
8. Now go to -->options --> emulator and toggle off "pause when inactive" for both games running.
9. Hit enter in game which will affect both games simultaneously and you should be able to connect without error!

Confirmed in 2022, still work perfectly, in fire red though. In case you wanted to try trading from one old many progression save file with a new save file, on the new one, you need to complete the first mission to deliver the prof oak package before you can access the top floor of poke centre. Otherwise you cant trade.
After completing pokedex on fire red, im planning to do leaf green then want to try trading with fire red.

Yo dude, on my vba emulator it doesnt show the "Link" Dropdown on the options below language, its just not there. Any reasons? Repsond when possible please :)
Hopefully this helps some people, because it took me a long time to get this to work with Emerald version;
I had both emulators up and running, First and Second.
The First is the one where I Hosted the server, and the Second Connected.
The Second, however, had to be the Leader, and the First had to Join.
The Second Emulator froze/crashed when I tried to Host and Lead on the First.
Maybe this was only me, and maybe it only does this for Emerald.
I know it's been 4 years.. but you're a live saver LOL

Thank you so much man! I finally could evolve my Kadabra into an Alakazam! and got a little extra help by passing Mudkip into my main game so... YES IT WORKS ON EMERALD WITH THE SAME STEPS! Just follow the link of the VBA and you are good to go.

In Options -> Emulator -> Save Type, set it to Flash 128K. Restart your emulator, and you're done.

Whenever I open the game on the VBA link emulator, it restarts the game.
you have to rename your save files to .sa1 and .sa2
I tried this with SandBox and it worked. Sandbox is a program that lets you run other things on the same computer
everytime i try, in one window appears the message: "Communication error... Please check all connections" just when i start the communication :(
I have the same issue, but it might be because of windows 10
I had the same issue. Solution for me was: turn sound off and not use "localhost" but the ip adress when I connected to the server.

If you have encounter the problem that one of your VBA screen crash when connecting, delete all of your vba(1,2,...).ini config, then start to link again just like the video. It's worked.

Out of date now. VBA-M has link options built in. It's also the emulator officially endorced by the creator of original VBA who doesn't do it anymore so VBA-M has now become the official carry on for VBA.

I understand why it's not working for some people,that download it's not to add a link option to your emulator,it downloads a version of the emulator with the link option,so to have link option you have to open the new version

Heres some tips
1. Open vbal #1(left)then open vbal #2(right)
2. Do to both:
Emulator>pause (uncheck)
Emulator>real time
Emulator>save type>128kb
Link>Wireless (check)
3.open games > load save file
Position char in pokemon center.
4.link > setting > network
Set vbal #1 to server
Set vbal #2 to connect
Start server > connect > no > ok.
Start talking to npc when prompt to choose leader make sure the leader is vbal #2 otherwise its most likely to freeze or just restart if vbal#1 was selected.
I did exactly that, but the 2nd window stays white and won't load the game. I tried making a second copy of the rom but it still doesn't work. What's the problem?
Ok make sure u have stable vbal version, then open the emulator for the first rom then open it again for the second rom.
If the second emulator wont load the game for some reason then maybe it has something to do with the vbal version, try using a different one.
Please help. Every time I try to import files from my old VBA to VBAlink, it says: "Importing a snapshot files will erase any saved games and reset the emulator" How do I comprehend this issue? I don't wanna start all over.

check to see if the link timeout is 1000. if it is, change it to maybe 40000 or 50000
you have to create save states for each rom...so when you open each rom, you should open a save state.

You gotta make sure that both clients are on sync, lemme just sum it up
1. Make sure that both of the emulators are synced
2. Make one of them the leader, while doing so make sure to turn off the other emulator's "Pause when inactive window" button on the options section
3. when the said emulator is the leader, turn back on the "Pause when inactive window" button on the options section and join group

When trying to open LeafGreen from VBA Link, I just get a white screen. The "Flash 128k" fix doesn't work. Any suggestions?
I did all this, but when I load up my game, it starts new? It doesn't load my current game. Screw it, I'll just use gameshark to get Gengar and rare candies to level it where my Haunter is at.

+Aaron Martinez It's not that it starts new. You still have your old save ln the old VBA. The first one you downloaded remember? This one starts new because it's a different VBA. You have to use your old VBA if you want to trade between that one and this one on the video
Correct! And you also need to edit the name of the save file cause it saves as sv1 or something.. you need to make it a .sav I managed to do it with a little bit of fussing around =D

If you're having connection issues, go into Emulator>Save Type>Flash 128k. If you're having problems with "friend unavailable", be the leader on the same window you started the LAN connection. "Join" on the second window. If you're still having issues and did both of those, try closing both windows and restarting. Sometimes it will crash. I ran into every single problem, but this does work and it's worth it.

some pokemon evolve when they are happy with their trainner, some evolve when they hold a special stone, some evolve with huge effort leveling up, but there are some that evolve when you give them away to another trainner...
my question is how does your second VBA open saved files? when I open a second VBA and try to open up a file it doesn't open a saved file but starts the game from the beginning as a new game. But when I open save files with the first VBA it opens it correctly and not from the start.
Try importing the battery file
you should set your seconds vba save games in another directory so they dont mix up with your first ones. Options directories if i remember correctly

As soon as I go to join the one that is the leader it just restarts the game. And I'm not sure how the vba link works like is it an application that needs to be open before you start this or does it just need to be on your computer?
Try to shift the role, first vba to join group and second vba to be leader

if you want to be able to save the game here's what to do
click: options > emulator > save type > then tick flash 128k
after that you have to start a new game and it should work
i know it sucks that you will lose all progress but there isn't any other way.

When I open the fire red I've been playing on with the included VBA it says the 1M sub-circuit board is not installed.
I know it's a long time ago, but since other players might experience this too, this is the solution: Go To Options > Emulator > Save Type: Flash128K then File > Reset and you're golden!
This is why VBA is so awesome. It has everything you'll ever need in an emulator, all in one application.

to all of you woh watched the video. i notcied the problem since its same for me. there two types of VBA emulators. The one most of us use is te UNlinked version. the one he uses and gives us a download link to is the LINKED version. tat why it does not work for us and we dont have thhe LINK option. and i tried sving the file to my pc and not ingame to see if i could load it in the LINKED vesrion but it didnt work, game just crashes and generally fucks itself up. so if you want to be able to trade pokemon you will need to start over opn the LINKED VBA version.
(if i misspelled something im sorry but i hope you understood anyway)
i had the same problem, but i searched how to transfer the save from the normal GBA Emulator to the GBA Linked Emulator
Damn I cant open the saves . Saves from Normal Emulator are .sgm and the Link Emulator has saves .sg1 so that's probb why i can't open saves from norm to link :( Can anyone help me ? :(

I tried to export the battery load from my save and import it into this vba with the link add on but it still crashes. If you know anymore info that might help me id greatly appreciate it!

solved the save problem with fire red and so on with this steps. options>emulator>save type>flash 128k. this will work if you want to play fire red instead of leaf green
I've tried on leaf green but this vba link saves on a different game save type so I'cant really trade pokemons :T

if people are still having trouble trading with yourself. i recomend getting Pokemon Ultra Violet. its a hack of firered that lets you get all pokemon without the need for trading. and that includes pokemon that would normaly need a trade to evolve
I use this tutorial to trade pokemon from fire red to leaf green, and it worked! so if anyone wanna do that, go ahead
If you want to trade some on fire red, just use one that is fire red and the other one something else (leaf green).
If you don't have the correct emulator you won't have the link, extract the files and then run the emulator you download from the VBA or the site from the link he told you to download it on and it will have link in the options.

Little help: first I accidentaly deleted the original vba.ini in the folder. Don't do that, the VBA needs all three of them.
Thats becuase theres 2 VBAs.
Theres the regular one, and then theres another one people made that's link compatible. You're probably using the original one, or some other link-incompatible emulator.
you just need to locate your save files from the old emulator game by clicking file>import>battery file... and loading the old save...then once you save it again in that emulator you'll have a copy of it in the new directory or you can use the old directory for saves.
I had a Haunter as a kid once, and I nuked the poke league a billion times to get that thing to evolve, and at level 100 I realized, it's not going to happen. a Gengar was all I wanted in life. But my Haunter was all powerful though holy shit it destroyed life just by being close to it.

I don't think so. But leafgreen is a remake of pokemon blue, just with better graphics. The story is almost the same except for a twist with three new islands. I recommend playing that instead.
