  • This has been one of my biggest questions I have received from plumbers and gas service people.
There are many different company's making regulators and for the most part there all good. I found these two company's to be one of the best I have used for natural and propane gas.
Pietro Fiorentini 3/4" black spring 2 pounds in 8 to 14" out F31052-2BP
Mec 10 pounds in 2 pounds out #MEGR-1622E-DFF
    Mec 10 pounds in 9" to 13" out #MEGR-1652-DFF
If you would like to ask a question or would like a Rinnai guy sticker please send your info to economyplmbg@aol.com

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. We live in the country and have a private farm gas well and everything is pretty unregulated. Unfortunately, that also means it's hard to find good information and assistance. We recently put in 2 Takagi tankless water heaters, but found that we could only run 1 at a time with any reliability (kept complaining about air/fuel ratio). Even when we only had a single unit running it didn't seem to like the pressure fluctuations and would complain. We upgraded ourselves to 2 PSI gas and put in a dedicated Pietro Fiorentini regulator for each tankless unit. We probably could have just used a single PF regulator, but I was tired of fighting it and wanted a bulletproof solution. It works perfectly now, the pressure stays pegged at 8 in wc due to the balanced valve design of the PF regulator and I never would have gotten to this point without your help and this video. Keep up the good work!

I'm here because I know absolutely nothing. I'm trying to connect a Rinnai v53dep tankless to a portable propane bottle for an offgrid application. If I understood it correctly, I need to install some pipe, the Megr-1652-dff regulator, a shut off, a minimum of 36" more pipe and ta da - done. I found it helpful.

Mike You're the Best!! How did you know Bob was my uncle?!?! 😉 But seriously, thanks for all the time and work you put into these videos. In about 3 months, I'll be installing a Rinnai RUR 199iN along with the rest of the water and gas plumbing in my new retirement home. Your information and attention to detail are an invaluable tool that will make this project easier and professional.
Ps - sent an email for a sticker, Thanks!

Mike- you've helped immensely with my installation of a new RE180iN heater. I'm replacing an old Aquastar that was fed by a 1/2" line. It is very close to the incoming supply line to my shop and I believe the 1/2" line will feed it adequately. The gas co. unit is labeled 25 psi. The line to the shop feeds a 2" gas line to fire a forge, kiln etc. The concentric venting for this water heater was a surprise to me. I'm waiting for new venting to come next day UPS to try and get this running before Christmas. I've run a lot of gas in the past to feed pottery kilns and am quite familiar with plumbing gas lines. I got a number 12 error and think the venting caused it. I'm concerned that I may get another 12 error after the vent installation if the regulator isn't outputting enough inches of pressure. The unit does light right now before throwing the 12 code. This leads me to think that the venting is the culprit. Also, the old line didn't have a sediment trap. I don't know if that was code when the old unit was installed 20 years ago here in Utah. I have a 42" flex line feeding it now so the regulator should be far enough away to function properly. I doubt that you will see this before I finish getting this installed, but welcome any advice, thoughts or concerns that you can give me. Your videos are some of the best I've found on any subject here on RUclips. Much thanks! Gordon

If you system is high pressure you need to reduce that down to inches. A Rinnai tankless works at an average of 5 to 13 inches of water column. Mike

Mike, Can the 10lb to inches or the 2lb to inches regulator be further then 3 ft. away from the Rinnai RSC 199I? The current line supplies a generator with a T in the line that we can tie into for the Tankless.

I’ve watched a few videos from others before finding your channel - no one else shows installation of the natural gas pressure control - I’m amazed there wouldn’t be one built into the unit if it’s that fussy? I’ve just ordered the RSC199in and am really concerned about a proper install.

Hi Mike, I'm not a plumber, I'm a house flipper. But, we've run into a situation with a house that the gas pressure is too low to run our Rheem tankless water heater in the attic. Atmos has been difficult to work with but has agreed to increase our gas pressure to 2 lbs and I have to put regulators on all the appliances. If I understood your video, which was incredibly informative and honestly most went over my head, then the Pietro Florentine 1/2" F31051-1BP would be the regulator I need for the tankless. Do you have any advice on which one to install on the gas furnace? The gas range came with a regulator.

Hey Mike. Just bout a Rinnai 199. I have a r232-bbf regulator on my tank, its output is a 1/2 inch npt. This is a integral regulator. My run for the pipe is 15 feet. Most charts say I need 3/4 inch tubing or pipe. My question is if I can adapt from the 1/2 npt to 3/4 line or has it already been too restricted from the regulator even though it's a 550btu regulator?

Hi mike thank for your videos, they are very helpful. Mike got a quick question, I'm installing an RU199IN, my gas line up to the wall is 3/4, right before the wall it goes down to 1/2", the heater will be around 3 ft from the gas outlet. is it better to use an adapter to bring it up to 3/4 again, or change out the T installed that changes it to 1/2, and install a new T that is 3/4 outright? Thanks.

Hey Mike. Will a problem with the natural gas pressure cause the recirculator to shut off. I have had 2 plumbers look at my Rinnai and I am still having issues. The last plumber said that the reciculator was shut off. He reset it, but I am still having the problem where the water will hot for a minute or so and then go lukewarm. I have to jump start the unit by way of the dump valve to make it work. I am wondering about the gas pressure because I’ve notice that my gas fireplace has been randomly shutting off as well. Thank you!

Great video Mike! Just bought a house built in 1987 that uses propane gas. I'm preparing to install tankless, and noticed none of the appliances have inline regulators. The only regulator is right at the propane tank (it's a Rego PV2302 two stage). The line runs underground to the house. Does this mean I'll need the 10 lbs to inches regulator for my tankless (Rinnai V75ip)?

I have a Rinnai tankless for which I'd had a 100-gallon propane tank. This became costly filling that tank for water heating only. So, I pulled that big tank off and installed a 40-lb tank. Problem is that I think I'm using the wrong regulator, because my tankless isn't firing. And based on your instruction, it would appear as though the installer did not install the regulator under the tankless. None the less, how may I use a 40 lb tank that is about 12 feet from the tankless with buried line? Why isn't it not firing. What must I do differently?
