The correct way to install a Rinnai Thermal bypass valve

  • This has been a question I'm asked a lot about the bypass valve.
    This valve can only be used on a RUR series unit or an HE-Plus pump system and only one bypass valve can be used per unit.
    If you install more than one bypass valve the system/tankless will not work correctly.
    With a RU series unit new or old circulation can only be achieved with a dedicated circulation line a thermal bypass valve will not work.
    If you need to buy a valve it can be purchased through your local supply house or online at supplyhouse.com.

    Mike thanks you for your years of service in the FD and also thank you for continuing to assist others. We would also like to thank you for reaching out to us after we had emailed you in regards to our water heater issues., especially taking time out of your day to explain in detail what we need to do to make our system work properly. You saved us a few hundred dollars by explaining how to do it ourselves. Very detailed information. Thank you sir.

    I wish my installers would’ve seen this video. They install the RSC199in gas water heater and I start complaining about not getting hot water in the furthest portion of the house and after about a week they get back to me and tell me that the installer decided not to install that piece And it was still on his truck. Big difference with the thermal bypass valve installed at the furthest point of the house although we do have our kitchen faucet for some reason still takes over a minute to get hot water to it. They are working on it but Your videos have helped me ask the right questions. Scary thing is we went from a 40 gallon electric hot water heater and we never had a problem at the kitchen faucet which is roughly 30 feet away from the tankless. They tell me they are working on it. Two weeks.

Thanks, Greg

    Hi Mike, thanks for all the videos you produce on the Rinnai tankless heaters. It's been a big help for me and the family. My question, I don't have the wifi panel on this unit. I have it in the garage and have easy access to make any changes on the heater. But it sounds like the bypass valve will continue to circulate when the temperature drops below 105? If that's the case, I'll probably just order the wifi panel and program different times to keep the unit from continually running.

    Great video Mike. I have the Rinnai i60 combi boiler. (Great boiler) The manual has a schematic showing the use of the bypass valve using an external circ pump and a timer. Obviously I would have to use a stainless steel pump. My question is what do you think happens if the bypass closes before the timer shuts the circ down ?
    Once again thanks for your time in posting helpful videos.

    I really like the way you explain so details. But I have some questions for you.
    I don't see any thermal bypass under any sinks in the house. Should I install one and should I install one for every sink in the house? Is there any modification on the pipe before installing a thermal bypass valve? Thank you very much!

    Hello everyone. I did not install this bypass valve under any sink in my home, but here is what I found out!
    None of the websites nor Rinnai explains how this thermal by pass valve actually works. If, I assume I install this valve under the sink, the hot water eventually will pass the valve through the cold line and it just make the cold line get warm a little bit. There is no way the hot water will push through the cold line period!
    The only way the hot water will circulate on the cold water line if the line has a circulated pump from the output of the hot water tank. Here is another thing! You may have hot water all the time on both line cold and hot, and you may need to install a timer on that pump to shut it off in a certain time, or you will end up to pay more for the gas or electricity (depend on the heater runs on gas or electricity). I think I rather pay for water than the gas because the water is still cheaper. Putting that bypass valve on will take you guys to modify with the whole process!
    Don't do it dude! Be safe!

    I have an RSC199IN unit and installed this thermal bypass valve. I had an issue where every time I turned on the cold water, then the cold water off the fan inside the rinnai unit would kick on. I isolated the problem by turning off the sink valves the thermal bypass valve was connected to and the problem no longer happened. I found that throttling down the sink valves (not all the way open) solved the problem. I also had the following on cold water line: water hammer arrestor, spring check valve, and an expansion tank primed to my city PSI. If you are seeing a similar issue with your unit, try this

    Hi Mike and thanks for the great work! I understand that the RU models will not work with the external pump and bypass valve. The problem for many of us, there's no cost effective way to add a return line. Will the RU work with the pump/valve combo (like Aquamotion AMH3K-RN) that installs under the sink without a return line, since the pump will shut off when the valve closes and not create back pressure? It seems that's why a traditional bypass valve will not work.. is that right?

      This type of valve easily gets gunked up by hard water scale, and it is not repairable. The NaviCirc valve can be cleaned and reused. Both have the same purchasing cost.

  • @ln_myvideos6480
    @ln_myvideos6480 2 года назад

    Mike, you say that using a thermal bypass will "confuse" an "RU" unit. Well, what about this scenario (with an RU180i): Suppose that I'm never using any auto-recirculation mode (as in "economy" or "comfort"), but instead I'm just doing "on demand" (with the Control-R app, or a button). It seems like that might avoid *confusing* the tankless unit. Would that work? (Thanks in advance!)

    • @ln_myvideos6480
      @ln_myvideos6480 2 года назад

      Well, I've tried it and it works. Here's a summary: The key is to use the Schedule (in the App, in conjunction with the Control-R module), setting it for, say, a 15 minute period first thing in the morning. (Or whenever, and for however long - but the shorter, the better.) The point is that by setting the Schedule, this restricts the functionality of Comfort Mode (or Economy, whatever you've got set) to just that 15 minute period: in my example, this effectively means that the Rinnai will auto-start the Grundfos pump exactly once, first thing in the morning (at 6:00 am), but never again for the rest of the day. Thereafter, we simply use our push-buttons for on-demand recirculation. We thereby avoid *confusing* the Rinnai's Circ-Logic. And thus far, this has been working like a charm. (Not to mention that is using recirculation only in on-demand mode, we're saving energy.) I hope this works for others, too.

    • @ln_myvideos6480

      By the way, I'm using the Grundfos pump together with an AquaMotion ODR Valve (crossover).

    Do you have any suggestions for when this valve starts making a ticking sound in the middle of the night with nothing running? Ours works well and has been installed for about a year but suddenly, it is making noise sometimes. It isn't all the time but it happens and since it is in the master bath, we hear it at night!

    • @handymangamer238
      @handymangamer238 10 месяцев назад

      Well, mine is making ticking noises in the night as well plus the other thing I noticed is that the water pressure drops when I have recirculation on, so I turned it off after couple of years and its been off since then, but this valve still keeps on making noises which kind of annoying now! That is why I started watching these videos to learn what its doing so that I can fix it.
