This isn't just a theme, this is a love letter to the character. This song is the definition of what happens when you hire a fan to make something for what they like.
Just a detail for people who haven't played the game, this game has a stylish meter where the flashiest the combo you're doing, the higher the ranking in a letter... And this system is linked to the OST Having different parts sounding depending on your performance, only having the vocals at S or higher if I remember well. So imagine the moment you make an absolute banger of a combo and finally getting an S only to a "I'AM THE STORM THAT IS APROACHING" to appear... I just love that mechanic and I wanted to share it to people who don't know much about the game.
Vocals don't exclusively kick in when you hit an S+ rank. The song just goes into different parts the higher you rise in your Stylish rank and when you hit an S Rank, the chorus is going to play. With Bury the Light it either starts with "I am the storm that is approaching" or "Forsakened I am awakened". Now if you stay in S+ the chorus will keep playing out until you reach the bridge of the song with "Bury the Light deep within". When that had played out and you're still in S Rank and the fight is still going it will restart at "I am the storm that is approaching".
11:11 This part here where you call the bridge is actually Vergil's story and imagery of everything bad that has happened to him in his conquest of gaining power whatever it takes for him to be the strongest, Casey made a stream talking about the lyrics of this song and it's really meaningful

Basically every lyric from Bury the Light has importance to Vergil’s character, and you can hear it as the song progresses “Immortal temptation takes over my mind” His obsession with gaining more power “Inherent the nightmare, surrounded by fate. Can’t run away. Keep walking the line between the light, led astray” By the end of DMC 5, Vergil’s obsession is curbed, and he’s more willing to listen to his brother Dante. Although, he’s not completely there yet “Two souls once lost, and now they remember” This can either be V and Urizen, or Dante and Vergil “I am reclaimer of my name” Vergil feels as though Sparda’s name isn’t being respected “Born in flames, I have been blessed” When he lost his mother and nearly lost his own life as a child “My family crest is a demon of death” His father Sparda having slain legions of his own kind “Lost shadows left behind” V’s familiars Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare, who were created from Vergil’s own nightmares “Bury the light deep within, cast aside there’s no coming home” He’s not casting the light aside, he’s burying it within himself so that it doesn’t lose it’s luster
See, I read the last part of the song as a highlight of the most tragic aspects of Vergil's character. "Bury the light deep within" is him suppressing his humanity, and "cast aside, there's no coming home" is him believing that his mother abandoned him during the attack on their home. That trauma is what drives him as a person, because ultimately Vergil's motivation is his belief that the world is dangerous and that the only way to not get hurt again is to become more powerful; "We're burning chaos in the wind, drifting in the ocean all alone."
expert analysis right there, thank you for this. One interesting fact is, this song is dynamic to your gameplay. the better you do, the less you get hit and the more you string your attacks, the more high gear the song becomes and gives, it's an amazing feature of the game
Hope there's not character limit Bury the light is as much a character study as a theme song. Setting aside lyrics the music itself can be picked apart into three categories that explain the character First is the more classical instruments like the violin. His elegance and stability mixed with an honestly sad undertone just listening to the violin. All point to his childhood where he lived in a huge mansion and studied these things yet reliving those memories are painful and muted Second. The more metal parts. The drums. The guitar. Simply this is his raged, focused yet fractured. Constantly shifting tones and tunes muting the classical stuff. The violin can be heard through most of the song but it's heard to due to the metal rage taking him Third. As you said the disjointed and layered way tends to make a bad song but here it works perfectly which is all because of the synth. His madness. One of the first things you hear in the song and tends to act as a sort of transition between segments. His tramour. His pain. He became the darkness he hoped to destroy yet this madness blinds him from that As for DMC. It's a character action game. Meaning you kill a lot of monsters and look cool doing it. Unlike hack and slash games it emphasises the looking cool part. Lots of compli complicated combos and a scoring system with the aim to get SSS Rank. I bring this up because in the game when combat starts you only get the singing of the song. As you get a higher rank more of the song stars to play. An instrument or two at a time. You can only hear the full song if you're playing well
A soundtrack I would strongly recommend you react to is the Metal Gear Rising soundtrack. It has one of the most heart pounding combination of metal and synthesizers that could be considered it’s own genre, I truly believe it has the highest energy per second count of any soundtrack out there. The song I recommend start with is “The only thing I know for real”.
Collective Consciousness is such an underrated track from that game it pains me that people don’t talk about that more just because it’s tied to a big robot ant and not a fast Brazilian, Magnet man, French stripper, scissor fatty or trump on roids
I always think how fantastic it is that people that have never played this game can almost perfectly understand a character through the music. It really shows how talented and passionate the artists are.
Don't know if this was mentioned, but this theme not only is the regular battle theme for Vergil it is also a dynamic song. It adapts according to how well you perform in combat, the higher your score, the more epic it gets, but when you get hurt, the song gets more quiet and subdued. Also, may i suggest listening to the rest of the sound track? Another suggestion would be 'Goodbye Esaka - Arranged' from The King of Fighters.
Late to this party, but anyone who likes this, should check out Casey Edwards talking about the production of this song. He was basically given a challenge to produce a heavy song, that fits the character of Virgil, without to much guitar. Most of what you hear are synths. The words, sounds, everything is to fit this character. It's an masterpiece on its own, but with context, its one of the best songs in gaming history.
Seeing you get constantly surprised by this song is consistently the first time reaction for everyone who hears it. It's such a musical buffet of keys, tempos, arrangements, instruments, and vocal styles. It has so much variety it's honestly astounding. This song deserves a place in superlative. Everyone needs to hear this.
the first 6min were effectively what casey wrote for capcom and their demands. the last third however, is a pure love letter to the character virgil from casey as he felt that the first part didnt portray virgil's character fully. you can really feel victor borba putting his soul into that last chorus, it sounds like there is an additional layer of emotion stacked onto his voice. good thing to keep in mind while listening.
I just wanna say, songs from dmc especially this one, and other songs in other games such as MGRR, you really feel the effort and love that was put in them. in bury the light's case.. it's been so long since we've such an accurate, beautiful, motivational song that truly tells you Vergil's story through the lyrics and the music itself.
I don’t think anyone has pointed this out yet, but Devil May Cry music changes depending on how good you play. This is the whole song, but in the game you’ve got multiple layers. Like, when enemies first appear, you’ve got that atmosphere-setting intro on a loop. Once you start fighting the song shifts into a mostly instrumental, and the lyrics finally kick in once you do something REALLY impressive. I gotta tell ya, slicing and enemy in half so hard you *break spacetime* followed by “I AM THE STORM THAT IS APPROOOOOOOACHING!” halfway through a fight that was mostly instrumental until now is one of the best feelings in the game.
You have no choice but to chalk this up to the power of Vergil Spardason. We DMC fans had been waiting through years of hell for Vergil to be a proper part of a DMC game story, so I bet when Casey discovered he would be making a song for a playable Vergil in the newest DMC game, the Prodigal Son of the DMC series, being a fan, he probably freaked out. (We were also dying for DMC 5 to get a special edition with an added playable Vergil all along, too.)
I'm so lucky I existed when this song is graced before us.. you can feel a pure visceral exhilarating experience from your soul.. heavenly magnificent!
For some reason I am drawn to how you analyze music. Your explanation is very similar to how I think when I listen to songs. Although I am no music producer, I play piano and guitar as a hobby. Amazing reaction. Played Devil May Cry back in 2001 and Devil May Cry 5 is the latest installment in the series. One hell of a roller coaster indeed.
This is one of the most awesome songs I know. I know it for so long now and it's still an epic masterpiece for me. And as a side info for you, Mattie... This is one of the soundtracks in the game who are dynamic. That means, while slaughtering the demons in the game you reach a combo scoring. As more your combo rises, as sicker the song gets. In other words, the game rewards you with cooler music when you play better.
Immortal temptation takes over my mind Condemned Falling weak on my knees, summon the strength Of mayhem I am the storm that is approaching Provoking black clouds in isolation I am reclaimer of my name Born in flames, I have been blessed My family crest is a demon of death! Forsakened, I am awakened A phoenix's ash in dark divine Descending misery Destiny chasing time Inherit the nightmare, surrounded by fate Can’t run away Keep walking the line, between the light Led astray Through vacant halls I won’t surrender The truth revealed in eyes of ember We fight through fire and ice forever Two souls once lost, and now they remember I am the storm that is approaching Provoking black clouds in isolation I am reclaimer of my name Born in flames, I have been blessed My family crest is a demon of death! Forsakened, I am awakened A phoenix's ash in dark divine Descending misery Destiny chasing time Disappear into the night Lost shadows left behind Obsession's pulling me Fading, I've come to take what's mine! Lurking in the shadows under veil of night Constellations of blood pirouette Dancing through the graves of those who stand at my feet Dreams of the black throne I keep on repeat A derelict of dark, summoned from the ashes The puppet master congregates all the masses Pulling strings, twisting minds as blades hit You want this power? Then come try and take it Beyond the tree Fire burns Secret love Bloodline yearns Dark minds embrace Crimson joy Does your dim heart Heal or destroy? Bury the light deep within! Cast aside, there's no coming home! We're burning chaos in the wind! Drifting in the ocean all alone!
4:27 you know it’s good when you stop making observations/critiques and just let yourself enjoy the music. The storm approaching is that perfect moment.

That trauma is what drives him as a person, because ultimately Vergil's motivation is his belief that the world is dangerous and that the only way to not get hurt again is to become more powerful; "We're burning chaos in the wind, drifting in the ocean all alone."
This theme was done by people that are passionate and know the character well. It resonates so well with vergil. It tops previous dmc theme.
this is not a song
THIS IS POWER

okay lets all be honest here. without the lyrics being as they are, this wouldn't be as legendary as it is.
They're such a BANGER
This is not a badass perfect song...

Now I'm a little motivated.(BOOM)
THIS
IS
MOTIVATION!!!!!!!!
And poetic too
this is POWER

expert analysis right there, thank you for this. One interesting fact is, this song is dynamic to your gameplay. the better you do, the less you get hit and the more you string your attacks, the more high gear the song becomes and gives, it's an amazing feature of the game
Just appreciate this song so much. So many remixes/variations of the song. I've got a Playlist of 15 of them. Keeps me going in the gym lol
Hope there's not character limit
Bury the light is as much a character study as a theme song. Setting aside lyrics the music itself can be picked apart into three categories that explain the character
First is the more classical instruments like the violin. His elegance and stability mixed with an honestly sad undertone just listening to the violin. All point to his childhood where he lived in a huge mansion and studied these things yet reliving those memories are painful and muted
Second. The more metal parts. The drums. The guitar. Simply this is his raged, focused yet fractured. Constantly shifting tones and tunes muting the classical stuff. The violin can be heard through most of the song but it's heard to due to the metal rage taking him
Third. As you said the disjointed and layered way tends to make a bad song but here it works perfectly which is all because of the synth. His madness. One of the first things you hear in the song and tends to act as a sort of transition between segments. His tramour. His pain. He became the darkness he hoped to destroy yet this madness blinds him from that
As for DMC. It's a character action game. Meaning you kill a lot of monsters and look cool doing it. Unlike hack and slash games it emphasises the looking cool part. Lots of compli
complicated combos and a scoring system with the aim to get SSS Rank.
I bring this up because in the game when combat starts you only get the singing of the song. As you get a higher rank more of the song stars to play. An instrument or two at a time. You can only hear the full song if you're playing well
Somehow i keep coming back to this one video, amazing work.
@@talion4033 "trump on roids" yup gonna save dat
@@talion4033 also HEAT OF THE DESERT
This, Guilty gear and Transistor are the Trinity of "The music has so much effort put into it, that the Album came with a really good game included".
@@franconunez925 I’d add Nier to that list as well
I always think how fantastic it is that people that have never played this game can almost perfectly understand a character through the music. It really shows how talented and passionate the artists are.
This song is a masterpiece, and is definitely inspired by the character itself, in the best possible way! :D
Still stuns me that the lead was able to mail such a beautiful piece…I hope he was given a bottle of water after delivering it
Not sure if yo noticed, but there are backing vocals of the guy doing some sort of heavy metal-esque voice, which is amazing once you hear it
Growl? Scream? Pig squeal?
False or inhale type of sht?
The most legendary game theme of all time. I haven't even played the games.
I recommend Shall never surrender and devils never cry , both are also masterpieces of Devil May Cry
Out of Darkness from the opening of DMC4 is a great piece too. And Voltaic Black Knight in DMC5 is also epic.
Your face after that guitar riff hit you from left field was hilarious
I'll prophesize. This will be one of your most popular videos
Then I would like to be there xd
Probably not because his most popular vids are mostly kpop and this shit gets clicked by all these 14 y/o so much
@@insanity-beats5526 2 weeks and it's his 3rd most viewed video...
I really like those reaction videos to Bury The Light. It was a very entertaining and educational video.
Hes theme is just as legendary as himself
Thank you for the informative reaction
the first 6min were effectively what casey wrote for capcom and their demands. the last third however, is a pure love letter to the character virgil from casey as he felt that the first part didnt portray virgil's character fully. you can really feel victor borba putting his soul into that last chorus, it sounds like there is an additional layer of emotion stacked onto his voice. good thing to keep in mind while listening.
This is not a song
This is POWER!!!!!!!!
IM FEELING MOTIVATIED
motivation
Very cool feature indeed
I love how the first two chorus’s are badass and then the last one is actually really sad.
I like the way you analysis the music! keep it up!
Ah yes, a gateway into the holy Trinity of Chad soundtracks. DMC, DOOM and MGRR.
I'm so lucky I existed when this song is graced before us.. you can feel a pure visceral exhilarating experience from your soul.. heavenly magnificent!
I always feel motivated listening to this. Bury the light deep within.
Fantastic stuff dude, so much great information in this. You have me hooked, excited to see more from you.
best song for work out, studying, or sleeping.
Vergil will protect you from demons in your sleep
Now i am MOTIVATED !
Love your reactions man
At 15:17 you are legally required to stop what your doing and scream this at the top of your lungs.
Song quite literally is his story and story of song itself is amazing
it's not only a song
It is...
the storm that is aproaching
I can already tell this reaction was going to be absolute fire by the length of the video
This is the thing that makes you motivated my friend.
Now this is...
MOTIVATION!
You now need to listen to Devil Trigger, also by Casey Edwards, which was his first song for DMC before Bury the Light
50% of the music production budget for the vanilla game went to Devil Trigger, the other 50% went to Silver Bullet
great reaction!!
MOTIVATED!!!!!!! BURY THE LIGGGGHTT DEEP WITHIN!
Oh producer how thou dare to pause lord vergil's battle cry in between, bury the shame within
Immortal temptation takes over my mind
Condemned
Falling weak on my knees, summon the strength
Of mayhem
I am the storm that is approaching
Provoking black clouds in isolation
I am reclaimer of my name
Born in flames, I have been blessed
My family crest is a demon of death!
Forsakened, I am awakened
A phoenix's ash in dark divine
Descending misery
Destiny chasing time
Inherit the nightmare, surrounded by fate
Can’t run away
Keep walking the line, between the light
Led astray
Through vacant halls I won’t surrender
The truth revealed in eyes of ember
We fight through fire and ice forever
Two souls once lost, and now they remember
I am the storm that is approaching
Provoking black clouds in isolation
I am reclaimer of my name
Born in flames, I have been blessed
My family crest is a demon of death!
Forsakened, I am awakened
A phoenix's ash in dark divine
Descending misery
Destiny chasing time
Disappear into the night
Lost shadows left behind
Obsession's pulling me
Fading, I've come to take what's mine!
Lurking in the shadows under veil of night
Constellations of blood pirouette
Dancing through the graves of those who stand at my feet
Dreams of the black throne I keep on repeat
A derelict of dark, summoned from the ashes
The puppet master congregates all the masses
Pulling strings, twisting minds as blades hit
You want this power? Then come try and take it
Beyond the tree
Fire burns
Secret love
Bloodline yearns
Dark minds embrace
Crimson joy
Does your dim heart
Heal or destroy?
Bury the light deep within!
Cast aside, there's no coming home!
We're burning chaos in the wind!
Drifting in the ocean all alone!
4:27 you know it’s good when you stop making observations/critiques and just let yourself enjoy the music. The storm approaching is that perfect moment.
"slaying characters" is a very accurate description of Devil May Cry
He looked like he was holding in some tears in some parts of the video
That outro guitar solo feels like this is it, this is the end.. then straight back to the intro it’s like saying, “or is it?” A farewell but maybe will return again someday
10:00 All you have to do is search for "vergil i am the storm that is approaching" to find out what is happening at the time this song plays.
I love "Berry Delight" one of the best song in the game.
Lmaooooo
Vergil's favorite dessert
Berried Delight
Vergil may Vergil Vergil edition is a game about Vergil hiring Vergil’s brother and Vergil’s son to defeat Vergil so Vergil can become Vergil featuring Vergil from the Vergil edition series
This song is so emotionally powerful.
Did you notice the guitar sequence starting from 16:05 reflects the lyrics of the final chorus, especially ‘Bury the light deep within’?
I think it's save to say that they couldn't have made a better love letter for a character, even if they tried. This song's basically the redemption of Vergil. I mean, hell:
-Mf comes in
-Has 10 minutes of screentime
-Steals the show
-Leaves
-Return with a banger of a theme
-Is even more OP now
-And still kicka everones ass
Save to say, I fucking love this song. Its still, after more than 2 years, still one of my most heard song to this day. It just doesn't get old
I played this song as a lullaby for my newborn daughter, I think she's Devil triggering.
She’s probably just motivated
12:56 So, the bass hits you like Vergil’s Judgement Cut? Meaning the song is perfect.
i would never get tired from listening to this type of music
"I don't know what is going on in the game at this point in time, but it's just an epic theme."
And that my sir, is Vergil's entire character in a nutshell, epic from start to finish.
10:00
Yes you are literally right. In fact, the more stylish you are while slicing up demons, the more intense the music will become.
I love how he goes silent for almost a whole minute for I am the storm that is approaching.
14:31 it hurt me so muuuuch lol
Loved your reaction
For a long time now, I had 2 "All-Time Favorite" songs. This is the third one.
Now I'm a little **MOTIVATED**
Imagine going Super Saiyan while listening to this. That is true motivation and power.
The stylizing of the music is very similar to Argent Metal, the kind of music used for the modern DOOM games, particularly Mick Gordon's work.
the doom eternal soundtrack the only thing they fear is you is another great video game soundtrack altough you have to find the right version by mick gordon bc he composed it and in game they changed it a bit.
great analysis btw
