They are Great for small stuff. I have the Milwaukee and it has saved my ass multiple times. The 1st time I used it, it paid for itself. In the middle of nowhere and lacking a coupling, I heated and swaged a couple of pieces of 1in pvc for a slip fit. WORKED GREAT! For those who don't know PVC pipe can be split and easily formed into just about any shape. Great for protective covers for edged tools and tough sheaths. Not as fast as a torch or real heat gun, but with no mains power for miles I was calling it the best tool I ever bought. I've used it to thaw locks, make epoxy set faster and get the air bubble out, and even heat up cold pizza at the jobsite. Handy as hell. This comes with more features and attachments than mine, but no idea the cost difference. You probably won't use it often, but when you need it, you'll be glad you got it.

I use them to heat the compressors and accumulators when I’m removing refrigerant out of a system In winter.
Don’t like an open flames on the systems
I have the A-67262 (small cone nozzle) and it works great with replacing electronic components on circuit boards without having to desolder each pin.
This is a great illustration of just how inefficient batteries are for this application. For heating, some type of gas is almost always going to be better unless you have HUGE batteries (and lots of them). The energy density is just on a whole different level.
Think of it this way - a typical space heater runs at 1500W. A standard 5Ah LXT is 90Wh. That would equate to 3.6 minutes of runtime.
I love this thing , but ya, it’s definitely not for professionals. Power and capacity wise you are pet better off going with a corded heat gun, or torch if you need constant use.
I use mine around the house and for small projects when I don’t need to use the corded gun.
I’ve used it for heat shrinking stereo wires, tinting my trucks windows and I even defrosted the freezer in garage, the attachment ejector is such an awesome feature, I wish that my corded one had this feature.
The only way the heat gun will be more for professionals will be when they come out with the 40v version.
I don’t use this on the daily so it works for my needs, I’m not ditching my corded heat gun though.
If you need this heat gun for professional use then look elsewhere, or hold off for the 40v version.

Decorator in the Uk, this tool is great for what it's designed for ie : drying, heat wrap etc but you have to remember it's 18v ! For paint stripping etc you will always need a 240v machine but very very handy.
Given how well that dewalt shell held up, PA6 might not be bad for the case after all.

I have one, not hugely impressed with it, it was crying out to be released on the XGT platform. Having said that, my 240 volt heat guns use 2400 watts when cranked up, you're never going to approach that output with a battery powered unit. These are handy for 2 minute little jobs, any longer than that and you can safely break out the extension leads to save your sanity. 😂
XGT x4 system might be enough…

Actually, there was a short lived Ridgid one that used butane to heat the air and battery just for the fan. It sounded a lot better, except it was expensive and unreliable, sadly. Maybe someone else will make one again.
18v batteries max out at 1800 watts out.
2500 watts out can easily be attained by larger xgt batteries.
@@Factoryseconds123 Trust me, they'd have no run time. These things chew through a 6ah battery in 15 minutes with what feels like a 1/4 the output of a 240V version. Not going to be usable without a large box of batteries.
Just got it and it is rather weak. I use it to expand and shrink plastic tubes for irrigation and the highest setting is just enough. The mobility of the tool is indispensable though; I can work so much quicker around the garden.

I would say the problem with the battery heat guns is not that they are all junk, its that people's expectations are too high. Anyone that understands the physics, understands the difficulties in designing a decent heatgun on 18V 6ah. The only part that is unacceptable is makitas advertising of this unit, which is misleading
I didn't have high hopes for this as my Milwaukee one is absolutely pants and it turns out this one is too. It might be ok for warming your gloves on a cold morning.
The Metabo HG 18 LTX is fantastic, directly comparable to my corded 240V. It doesn’t matter how hot you can get a heat gun if the air flow is rubbish which makes the heat generated unusable. Well done Metabo 💪💪

Dude good test . But in my experience with heat guns the slower wind speed is hotter same with hairdryers. I’m still quite interested in getting one of these. I’d be using it for preheating small car parts for painting. For restoration use

Got my one when it first released. I like it allot as it will save me setting fire to all the little jobs I used to use the blow torch for.

I'm heavily invested in LXT but I still fear they will sunset it in a few years. Although to be fair I don't quite blame them if they do, they have had the same battery platform for at least 12years (my oldest tool). DeWalt can't even support a platform for one month! 🤣🤣🤣

@@asarendars I WANT to get on makitas 12v range but they have let it rot. Milwaukee appears to be the go for 12v, plenty of skins to.
I actually like the look of it. For small heat shrink, bending conduit and drying wet things, it looks like it would be spot on. Less hassle than borrowing the wife's hairdryer.
My disappointment is the lack of MacPac case, I don't understand why they've gone back to the old style of cases.
Because the old style cases are much better.
MakPak cases are difficult to open, very space inefficient, and relatively easy to break compared to blow moulded cases.
That does not match my experience. I like them.
That all said, I've just purchased the heat gun in the UK and it did come in a macpak case

I dont know if you tried it but I would have thought that there would have been more heat at the slower air speed (with the heat on max). That may speed things up a bit. Ok - saw the end of the video!
I just recently purchased a Ryobi 18 v heat gun and it is lousy compared to my corded heat gun

You heard the man Makita we need a 40v beast to rival a blow torch.
I bought to shrink gasket, so it doesnt peel back off, dry of water in tught spaces so i dont need to set up the airline and can help out other workers! And can warm my gloves up 😊 defo good for small jobs like mune stated above, however if u are in a professional trade needing this on the daily then id recommended a wired unit or 100 batteries and alot of patience
I went and had a play with one the other day like all these 18 V ones they all (have try out Dewalt and Ryobi) don’t appear to have enough blow for my likings do like the removal nozzle accessory out the front tho

Rather limited tool, especially on the LXT platform. I would love to se a heat glue gun LXT instead and keep this on the XGT

You’d think with the 18V heated jackets they would make a heated or fan installed swag
The fact that they make a plastic welding nozzle for this is interesting. Doing PVC Welding you need good thermal control and loads of heat but highly concentrated. I have a 2400 watt mains unit but rarely run it at full heat. Shame they didn't supply a plastic welder nozzle to try.
A heat gun is never going to rival a blow torch. Heat guns typically top out at between 550-750 C. A candle flame is 1000 C. A blow torch, depending on the fuel, will be as much as 3 times that. A propane torch is always going to be well over 3x hotter than any heat gun.
The point of a heat gun isn't to get super hot. It's CONTROLLED heat.
It's absolutely stupid that they made that, I'm still annoyed about it. They don't make a heat gun for ages so I figure they are waiting for the 40v platform.. They then release the 40v tools then the heat gun on 18v
i would go for the blowtorch 100% way hotter and works way faster!
A map gas blowtorch melts things quicker than a cordless heat gun, who knew...
I wonder if you could use that focussed heat for hot air rework/soldering with solder paste.. without blowing all the parts away.
Really useful for wire heat shrink.. Hate to use fire for that..
I think for 550C you need to use the reduction nozzle. After this tool, Makita can start putting light on the lower part of drills.

I have Makita’s wired heat gun. I’m disappointed this version didn’t keep the temperature control LCD with the actual temperature value. Also, this seems like it should’ve been on the XGT line.
Hikoki made their heat gun with a screen, and is compatible with the 36v. But feature wise the Makita is probably still better.
This power hungry device needs to be upgraded to the XGT line!

Sooo for someone just doing electronics and pulling adhesive off things (without damaging them) it's good? I already have a 6 batteries so I was hoping this would be good! I'm not stripping paint or needing a blow torch!

Hard pass on this cordless unit, so I looked into buying the Makita variable speed plug in heat gun HG6031VK. After reading a load of reviews that unit doesn't seem to have great reliability, what the hell is going on Makita? Seems like the engineering team who is designing the heat guns needs a long vacation..........
Now I have to look into purchasing another brand. I have an old beat up Wagner unit that won't die, but I wanted more temperature control.
It's 2023 how hard is it to make a good heat gun???

I think that will get "hotter" on the low volume setting.
Perfect for identifying which temperature sensor was wired incorrectly to a PLC when no AC power is available. Else one electrician and one programmer are going to spend two man-hours troubleshooting. This heater will pay for itself on first use.

You’ll run through a whole battery and still not accomplish as much as 2 seconds with a proper corded model.

Ally tools got stolen so I need to replace them. I'm definately considering switching platforms. I was on the 40v platform and some of Makitas decisions were questionable.
Makita went with outdated tech on the 40v batteries which made them like bricks and to this day there still doesn't appear to be a 40v/80v mower.
This heat gun debacle exemplifies my frustration with Makita. Common sense would have dictated to release this heat gun on the 40v platform... They may have ended up with a useful heat gun then. Sometimes I just don't know what makita are thinking. Trade counter Direct don't even stock makita now, which makes me think they may know which way the winds are blowing
I use mine for killing ants and melting beeswax and the 40v blower for blowing ants.. edit, beekeeper not a sadist, ants build nests in, on and around beehives, heat is better than chemicals.
Its perfect for repairs smartphones.

I bought this for heat shrink as a sparky, I just basically use the thin walled stuff. Even for that, its slow, I used to use gas when the power was off. I am returning it and just going to keep my annoying 230v $20 item. This is too slow even for light duty stuff. If the skin was less than $100, I might have kept it.
That heat gun looks like a good tool for electronic repairs and delicate jobs rather than pipes and paint
Just what I thought. So I bought one.
Delighted to find out that an accessory exists to assist with small heat-shrink jobs on wires and cables. Chose not to afford the mortgage they required to pay for it. Ludicrous price for a bit of bent tin.

Vincent's best bet if he doesn't like naked flames is to buy a gas powered heat gun . uses the same bottles or the smaller ones and is pretty much as glorified space heater but it definitely a better option than these things.
I find the trickiest part being the storage of the propane or MAP gas tanks in the cold months.
