Pro tip 1: Use the Level knob as well! I figured out, my Peavey 6506 sounds kinda farting an things get kinda easy out of control when I max out the HM-2 so I dialed it back to 3 o'clock.
Pro tip 2 (especially in live situations): In case the locations sound is awful and the sound technician doesn't even know what a HM-2 pedal is and everything you hear in front of stage is ear piercing noise, dial back your amps presence OR (what I found out works sometimes great swell) dial back the HM-2's High knob! Sounds weird but works! People ifos probably wouldn't even notice - believe me.
Pro tip 3: FUCK A NOISE GATE! LET THERE BE NOISE!!!

The other tip is that a good bass tone will make or break your hm2 tone. I hear so many amateur Hm2 records with almost no bass audible and it sounds weak. Any record by Kurt Ballou who in my opinion is the king of modern Hm2 tones has a prominent warm bass tone filling in the music and it adds so much weight to the guitars. Just listen to Black Breath’s I Am Beyond or Harms Way’s Infestation and you will hear the bass is just as important as the hm2 itself.

Anyone considering adding an HM-2 to their rig to play Death Metal needs to see this video (and your other vids). These are the tips and tricks I'd put in a video and I even learned some new ones. It's trendy to say all knobs absolutely must be on 10, but as you pointed out, not necessarily. The chainsaw tone is primarily in the Hi knob (maxed) so experimenting with the other knobs is key to getting the most powerful chainsaw tone for any given rig. All knobs at 10 is cool, but sometimes can sound weaker than lowering some settings on the amp and/or pedal.

A fairly overdiven channel of an amp with my hm2 with all knobs on max except the gain on 0 is my go to.

  • @JasTheGoose88

I use my MIJ HM2 to boost into a behringer HM300. The HM2 has everything maxed, except the gain is set to zero and the HM300 has the level and gain maxed and the mid and low knobs set to 3 o'clock to avoid scooping away too many frequencies. It sounds absolutely amazing, but I probably need to use a pedal to blend the HM2 signal with the HM2 + HM300 signal to get a bit more clarity in my tone. your videos inspired me to do this and I can't thank you enough.

The boost idea is really helpful and simple. I run a "ts9" after my HM2 and it really smooths out a lot of the boomy lows in the signal path. It also adds a nice touch of fizz if you bump the gain up just a smidge. It's even more helpful if you a rather low gain amp (like a JTM45).
Suggestion: maybe make the text orange and place it under the number during the chapter titles. I couldn't read the text at all for each section.

I finally got my hm-2w to work with my setup. I use an orange cr120 on the distorted channel with the gain about 6. Then the hm-2w I run level max, low around 1 o'clock high around 3 o'clock, distortion off. It chainsaws but it's not as extreme and retains a lot of the amp's sound. I use 4 pedals total. Tuner, hm-2w, a delay, and an EQ to kind of clean up some of the unnecessary stuff. I couldn't be happier.

My band did something similar to #10 but with Bias FX and no HM-2. The second amp was used to fill in some high end that the HM-2 amp didn't cover, which paid off greatly.

I am a big fan of your HM-2 videos, and I find them very informative for all of us chainsaw-heads out there. I have one request for a video: it would be very interesting to see how different amp sims affect the HM-2 tone and which one is objectively the best for achieving that super chainsaw grinding tone that can be both a more "modern" death metal tone and an old-school one. Which IR would be the best? Which brand of amp sims? Neural DSP? STL? Line 6? Ezmix?
The options are endless, and in the studio where I usually reamp my HM-2 (to retain that vintage/real-sounding pedal distortion instead of an algorithm-based pedal sim), I sometimes find myself sitting for hours scrolling through amp sims and IRs to find the perfect blend.
I think it could be a very interesting video!
    Cheers!

The blend control is great idea for many dirt pedals. The $180.00 USD price is nuts! Add shipping and for many taxes and it soon costs more than the damn pedal you buy it for.

For the blending thing, does it work to record and play the riff again on another take on the clean channel with no pedals, then blend those two takes? Kinda curious on this. I could see it giving it some flavor or going horribly. Don't have a chainsaw pedal to try it atm. (I do have an hm2w preordered though!)

Maybe its an Issue with my hm2 build, but almost the only knob I mess around with is the LEVEL control. How come you don't seem to acknowledge its abilities? It can do and undo that overload/crackling sound, similar to power amp distortion in tube amps. It has some interesting brachiality to it, but I think it can be too much when it sounds like the output buffer transistor is struggling for its life. I built my own hm2 circuit, sticking to the "official" schematic and original parts as far as possible, except for the germanium diodes. Those are exchangable 250mV Shottkys or 340mV 1N60 Germaniums.

    • @DomeNightbearer
      @DomeNightbearer  3 года назад +1

Oh, of course you can play with the level, however in all my different tests/setups I think it sounds best at max. Whenever I turn it down, the sound weakens. Personal opinion tho 😅
