Ixe seen plenty of heater channel removals on utube as this is the first time anyone has actually explained and done it right !! Gives me plenty on confidence now in tackling this job , so thank you

In 1981, I had a '70 Beetle with heater channels already rotted out in places along the door seal area. Doesn't take long for a Beetle to rust. I see this project is a '66 model and 40 years after I did mine. So, I guess this car is a lot better off than mine was. My '70 has long since gone to the crusher. On the other hand, in 1982, I had a '69 Beetle that was originally sold in the Pensacola, FL area and was undercoated by the dealer. The body was totally protected from rust and was a very good candidate for restoration, which I did.

Nice work! The angle grinder takes too big of cuts. I need to find better Dremel cut off wheels. Mine keep blowing apart. I bought a spot weld cutter when doing my aprons from O'Reillys. Its nice, it don't drill holes through just cuts the spot weld. I forget which video I showed it in though.
@@FixinBugsNStuff I didn't know you tried one. that can happen. Surprisingly the 1 from a OReillys worked great. The 1 from Harbor freight, well....you know..lol
Excellent video mate, by far the best for removing a heater channel and great use of the Dremel. I am about to do this myself, can I ask what checks/measurements did you make to ensure the new channel goes back in the right place?
What I normally do is bolt on the heater channel to the floor pan and lower the body. Double check the doors then tack weld heater channel to the body. Un-bolt heater channels and lift the whole body with heater channel in place. I hope this helps.
If you don’t mind can you make a video showing how you made the supports you have welded to the body I just bought my first bug and I am going to learn how to weld with it also.!! And I’m assuming you welded it to the body so it doesn’t flex correct ?
It's fast and mostly consistent, not much heat to distort metal and no worries about setting wire speed/gas flow. Spot welder doesn't use anything except electricity.

Helpful video, I have been putting off heater channels job for near ten years because I wasn't sure how to do it. I'm not good at welding yet.
You can do it, just take your time.

90 degree die grinders are your best friend.
North East bugs usually have less metal. Sometimes its just a hood roof n glass 😆 you got a unicorn.
