  • Join us on an exciting journey of automotive restoration as my dad and I tackle the challenges of repairing a 1974 VW Super Beetle. In this video, we initially set out to replace the heater channels, but along the way, we discover that the firewall is also in dire need of replacement. Despite the unexpected setback, we embrace the opportunity to switch gears and prioritize replacing the firewall before the heater channels. Through the ups and downs of this challenging task, we share laughs, memories, and a deepening bond as father and son.     Hey pal! First - enjoy the work proccess with your dad and grandad - an experience for life to tell about to your kids.
    I restored a 77 cabrio, i pretty much replaced most of metal body parts with premium ones i bought from cip1/csp/wolfsburgwest/hoffmanspeedster - keep on mind that ALL metal parts will need trimming and adjusting in order for them to get into place. So take your time and enjoy the proccess. Your dad's "two hour" approach will not work here 😂.
    Just for the body it took me over 400 hours to perfect the body metal...i really enjoyed them!

      Was working on pulling the body of the pan on the weekend- only one spinning bolt to cut off. But your video has got me nervous about what I’ll find once she is taken off. 🤞

    The Klokkerholm firewall for this year range matches this car better. CIP1 carries this one as well.

    I’ve got a 72 Super in “great” shape until I start to fix something, and then it is a journey of rust, broken bolts, frozen nuts, and endless unexpected hours. Frustration, yes, but I still love my “Vocho” which I purcased in Dec 1979.

      Yeah I love the journey , it can be frustrating but at the end of the day I have had so much fun working on this car and its just starting to come together so im excited to see what's next!

    best to heat that undercoating up with a propane torch then use a putty knife to peel it off.

      I Know but it smokes and makes a giant mess lol, so far the best way is to peel it with a knife like cheese lol Ive got a lot to remove this week so ill give it a bunch of different tries lol

    I'm in the process of restoring a 74 vert also. I replaced the front firewall and had to cutt one wheel well also. I also believe my firewall was not exactly the same but it will work. Had to replace everything that mounts to the chassis. If I did it again I would make sure the heater channel lines up in the front n back. 👍

    Loving this build series. Way to keep a positive attitude! I also recently bought a 74 super beetle that had a lot more issues than I thought. Currently doing the bodywork and pans. Thankfully it's not quite as bad as yours. Biggest problem is the death foam in mine . Like you I'm just taking it as a learning experience. Cant wait to see how it turns out.       Thanks for watching !! I just learned about the death foam but I don’t see it as a big deal. I’ll just cut a hole and clean it all out. That’s my plan but nothing ever goes as planned lol 😂

    I would bolt the heater channels and fire wall to the pan and sit the body on it,

      That’s the plan. We have no reference points now so we have to test fit everything a million times before welding. Fun lol 😂

    The shift rod comes out through the front. There is a stout bolt in structure at the front I call the "bash/crash" plate. You remove that and it exposes a hole through which the shifter is removed. You can remove it from the rear, but only when the gearbox is out.

    You may have already found out, but there's pieces that go inside the front firewall that bolts down to your floor pan that you need to have before you weld your firewall in

      There’s firewalls that come with mounting brackets and there’s some that don’t come with the mounting brackets. I’m assuming yours came without and had to purchase mounts seperate and install. This firewall I’m installing came with mounts already welded in place.

      Have the body ready for paint most of the parts back on the floor pans ready to install still lots to do winter project been four winter on it

      Awesome! I'll be there eventually lol, 4 winters! I couldn't imagine lol my pan is heading for sandblasting and painting here shortly. all the suspension is heading for powder coat. While that's happening hoping to finish the metal work and start body work. when the pan comes back hoping to have the body ready for paint and once everything's painted and it's all here. Hoping to spend about 4-5 days reassembling all nice and its go time lol

    I think you need a whole in the spare tire holder that’s how you get the shifter rode in it is in mine but mine is a 67 you might want to check an see if yours has to have it too just looking out killer you get to build with your pops I’d keep the car cause yall built it love the channel you’re doing killer inspiring me but I’m scared to start pans in mine lol

      It’s not that bad. Don’t know how it’ll go unless you try it !!! Shifter rod is part of the pan. Mine comes out through the rear I believe. Either way the body doesn’t need a hole in it , since the shifter rod is part of the pan just means you need the body off to access it.

    Im in the same position. Spent 1600 on a body that was supposedly rust repaired and come to find out its patches over rust. What should have been dropping the body on a restored pan has turned into heater channels, the same rear panels you are replacing, part of the lower firewall... it just keeps adding up every time I touch something. Im trying to get to a point my son can start helping again, just keep finding more that needs done first. 🥴

    Typical beetle shit. They're all like this, patched in the same places, rotten in the same places. These were daily cheap cars that people cobled together to keep on the road, much like anything worthless these days.

      Such a shame. I don’t see these cars like that. But I get it. This one will be mint when it rolls out of the shop anyways so that’s all that matters to me right now lol

      @mikedeschamps I agree, I don't either but at the time, and a lot of people who owned these car didn't know how to work on them or maintain them, or even worse, they're, enthusiasts.

      @jasonburkhart1632 generally, that's pretty obvious of its gone bad. You'll see clear bubbling of the paint, and it'll even extend up to the rain gutter.

      Yep mine was getting into that area. Did my best to sandblast and coat from the inside. I wasn’t cutting into the roof
