- as you can probably tell, i got a bit carried away with this topic. i thought it'd be something you all wouldn't be interested in, but i got so many requests to do it after the poll in the community tab that i couldn't resist! this is my longest video essay so far and definitely one of the ones that required the most research, i didn't realize how many different dolls there were in the 2000s! which of these dolls did you want as a kid?

We put three polly pockets in my dad's birthday cake one year. kinda mimicking those cakes that have a Barbie-like doll in the middle and the cake is the dress. My sister and I thought those were so cool.
So I'd add singed Polly Pockets to the list too bc we burnt ours. XD
Sometimes they also would randomly snap when you tried putting them on or removing them.

BRATZ were so important to me as a child. I’m white / Mexican mixed & initially loved Yasmin the most because of that but would play with them all equally & who I thought was prettiest constantly changed. The representation was really so important.

Like omg I wasnt big on fashion dolls or human dolls much at all as a kid (I was a LPS kid) but I remember i saw this Sasha doll in this arcade machine in probably 2006 and i couldnt stop staring at her i thought she was so cool. And some how I lucked out and the arcade attendant unlocked the machine and just gave her to me. And even if I hardly played with her I remmebrr always thinking "we look the same that's so cool!"

Bratz were the *most* iconic doll brand of the 2000s. From fashion, to design, to movies, to even music. Truly encapsulated the 2000s. They literally had Mattel shook and influenced so many brands. They had the girls scrambling.

I'm sorry but while Barbie probably is the most iconic doll line overall, the bratz are DEFINITELY more iconic to the 2000's.

Sorry, but the facts are that although bratz were popular in the 2000s, barbie was still taking 60% of the doll market between 2000-2009, with my scene, bratz, american girl etc taking the remainder.
I believe bratz only had 10% of the share. They were taking a lot of sales away from the barbie brand... but they did not beat barbie in the slightest.
Barbie is the Regina George of the doll industry, and she murdered those skanks lol

I had the one that can be stick on the wall mall. Technically it was my sister, but we shared. The shoes will always go missing, and I couldn't stick it on the wall.
Bratz easily. Loved them. Fashion, the fact that they were girly but athletic and the cartoon just cemented them in my mind. They were business women. AND DIVERSE, not just basic diverse but Sasha being dark skin was so iconic to me. Dark skin and so pretty and wasn't any more aggressive than the other girls or something similar

Yes!! I loved that bratz had a Latina doll. I was obsessed with yasmin 💕 then my bestfriend had her Sasha dolls. We loved it because there was finally that representation 🙌🏼
My music teacher was obsesed with Barbie. She had a whole room in her tiny apartment dedicated to her historic Barbie collection, it was pretty impressive and *aesthetic* .

To me, American Girl dolls seem like status symbols for parents to brag about. None of my friends actually played with them, they just had them sitting around all pretty in their rooms.
I can’t relate my friend and I played with our American girl dolls everywhere I was going to keep them but after years of falling out of trees they look a little yikes 😬
My rich friend had ALL of them and one time she knocked over her Josephina doll and its ear melted off from her radiator...it wasn’t “perfect” anymore so her parents got her a new one and she gave the damaged one to me. I took it with me EVERYWHERE until i grew out of playing with dolls, I still have it too!

Yeah. My sisters friend had a birthday party revolving around American Girl dolls. My sister felt like she had to get one and told our parents. Funny enough though, she ended up getting a Cabbage Patch Kids doll 😂 My dad didn’t mean to get it for her but thought that was an American Girl Doll. Needless to say that party was awkward for my sister who couldn’t do anything with her doll while everyone was styling their American Girl Dolls. And my parents ended up buying the right ones :/

The Polly Pocket dolls aren’t just rare because of the Mattel acquisition, it is also because the Blue Bird set was completely recalled because they were insane chocking hazards. It was actually one of the biggest doll recalls ever.
Okay but LIV dolls were highly underrated and I’m sad that the video didn’t seem to like them!! The fact that you could move everything, the fashion and story behind the dolls was realistic, I loved that you could have a favorite doll but change their hair, and yes I personally loved the eyes and how they weren’t painted on.
I remember I was apart of girl scouts back in 2012 and I always thought of how badly I wanted a liv doll (particularly the one with curly amber hair and green eyes) but I never got it :(
I had totally forgotten about the LIV dolls ~I was obsessed with them! I had all their names, quirks & individual stories memorized.. oh goodness I miss them! I'm so sad she didn't like them

I only had one but she was one of my most _favorite_ dolls as a kid! My parents let me pick her out when I was sad that my siblings went to summer camp. It was pleasantly out of character for them, since we usually didn't have enough money to get big stuff outside of birthday/Christmas. She came with a guitar, song writing book, and killer knee high boots 😆

I so agree! There's this whole movement to boycott Barbie because she represents unrealistic proportions for women. Let me tell you, as a kid I didn't care about the shape of her waist, I just liked playing with a pretty doll who had awesome clothes and could do any career she wanted.

I was never a bratz fan. But the myscene dolls were my life back then. I still have most of the dolls. And the masquerade dolls are absolutely gorgeous even today

i had samantha, mary ellen, and i had the girl of the year grace from 2015 because she looked just like me and i loved paris stuff
To me there really is something special about them. I had other 18 inch dolls and have seen others yet. None of them were made with the quality of AG, specifically the hair. I even had a MyTwin doll and her hair got terrible so fast. If taken care of the hair is super amazing and styles so well. Definitely different than most doll hair. It’s high quality enough to be heirloom, and I still have most of my stuff tucked away for future kids.
i really love bratz dolls. it's sad they stopped making them but on their website it says "coming soon" with the background being images of what looks like new dolls with articulation(which is a big plus). not sure if they will be collector dolls like last time or just normal dolls. anyway i really liked this video!

you could still buy them. at thrift stores, online on amazon but you find better stuff on ebay.
Definitely check out Mercari, local FB Marketplace, and Ebay before Amazon. But the 2018 Collector Bratz are still in stock on Amazon.

I do NOT remember Polly pocket clothes being “easily removable” LOL. I remember getting a workout in trying to put on and take off clothes
Same, I would take small breaks, huffing puffing, trying to put those rubber chewable clothes on. I would even ask my mom for help when it got to tough I would be so happy if got them on or off. I also grew up on Bratz, Polly Pocket, Monster High, Alexander Dolls, American Girl but never bought them cause there were expensive. Of a course barbie that's on the period with movies. And the Winx club, which I mainly grew up on the show, not the dolls. But, I kind of makes feel bad that the children of today will never get ever the golden age of our childhood. With great tv shows, movies, toys, video games, that had the balls to teach us about serious real world topics. And some trends, or things we did as kids. Like for example, if you were having a B-Day party all you need was the three pink cardboard Vallina, Chocolate, Strawberry flavor ice cream, cups, plates, utensils, & something else I forgot about. 💯🎈

They used to rip WAY too easily. I remember being afraid to disrobe the polly pockets of my friends because of the high risk that I would rip a seam or something. I wasn't about to mess up somebody else's property at age 7 😅
these weren’t in the same timeline, but does anyone remember “Bratzillaz”? the “cousins of the Bratz”? like, a gothic monster version..Also, does anyone remember Novi Starz? they were alien teenagers trying to fit it with humans. I didn’t have any of the dolls (Bratzillaz or Novi Starz) but the shows were on point.

This whole video was my childhood condensed 😂 I seriously think my American Girl doll obsession is what got me into historical fashion as an adult, because my favorite fashion eras are coincidentally the eras of the dolls I owned as a child. Also: thank you for mentioning Royal Diaries!! I used to LOVE those books and never knew remembered what the series was called!

I love the Diva Starz website, it had these episodic games that were sooooo fun to play. They took it down once they took the dolls off the market, I remember going to my favourite website one day and bring heartbroken that it wasn't there anymore 😢
I was born in 2006 and I always LOVED monster high dolls, they're creative and diverse and fashionable and the movies were chefs kiss but after watching this I wonder why I wasn't obsessed with bratz too
tbh i'm still obsessed with bratz at my 23 years of age lmao. they were my favorite doll line and i still have a few...i obviously don't play with them anymore but it's just nice to look at them and admire their outfits and reminisce on my childhood :(

Uhhh the doll lines you can find on shelves at the moment are:
LOL Surprise/LOL OMG (by far the biggest one right now, I'm sure you have heard of it)
Hairdorables (the main selling point is super long high quality hair)
Snapstars (Similar to LIV in appearance, their gimmick is they come with a greenscreen so you can put them in different scenes with the app)
Rainbow Surprise (Larger than a typical fashion doll, their gimmick is they come with slime that you make and add to their fashions)
Rainbow High. (not yet yet but very soon. Basically smaller, color-themed versions of Rainbow Surprise)
Wild Hearts Crew (exclusive to walmart. With sort of vintage fashions)
Fresh Dolls (A smaller company that makes black dolls specifically to add more diversity. Unfortunately hard to find unless you live in a really racially diverse area)
Creatable world (Androgynous looking dolls that you can dress to look like either a boy or a girl)
BTS dolls (dolls that are modeled after members of the kpop group BTS)
Project MC2 (dolls that come with a science experiment. The line is meant to encourage girls to get into the STEM field)
Capsule Chix (Little dolls that look like robots. Kind of like Betty Spaghetti in that the clothes are actual body parts you sort of frankenstein together)
Barbie (Of course. Although the most diverse brand at the moment, it's unfortunately much lower quality than it used to be).
Na Na Na Surprise (Dolls that sort of look plush but actually have solid interiors and are somewhat posable)
Cave Club (probably the newest doll line on this list. Fashion dolls that are basically stone age/cave people)
Equestria girls (basically humanized versions of the my little pony characters)
Boxy Girls (Dolls known for having square, box-shaped heads. Probably the cheapest doll on this list)
Polly Pocket (they went back to what they used to do where she is super tiny and comes with a pocket-sized playset)
Lotta looks (Basically a fashion doll that works like a Mr. Potato head)
Candylocks Surprise (a doll that is hidden in long long hair that you unravel)
So, SO many disney princess dolls.

The Myscene dolls just unlocked a hidden memory for me! I watch the movie as a kid and didn’t know there was a doll line! Also I loved Polly Pockets but I never owned any. My cousin had a ton of Polly Pocket dolls and accessories and I was so jealous. Swan Princess and Rapunzel were my favorite Barbie movies.

with mga, specifically. they try so bad to be as good as mga but the difference, is that mattel just knows how to sell plastic cheap made dolls and sell em for 30 bucks. mga is iconic and pure quality.

And at 8 years old, I wasnt really thinking to myself "I'm so sad because I don't look like her!" I would usually think "Maybe I'll get to dress like her when I'm older! You also have to remember how huge the “Look Like Me” style of American Dolls were. It was revolutionary for the brand and SO many little girls (including myself) were desperate to get one. A lot of girls, though they liked the historical characters, still leaned towards ones that looked like them and strayed from ones who didn’t, so inventing the Look Like Me style was crucial to keep the business rolling.
They started that actually because Mattel bought American Girl in the late 90's.
Not gonna lie, got the Samantha doll because I couldn't get both a historical doll and a Look Like Me doll, so I got the historical doll that looked most like me (actual fave historical girl at that time was Josephina).

I was OBSESSED with Bratz. Movies, games, dolls, accessories, books, and my big Yasmin doll. My mother was glad that I played with any dolls at all so she was definitely on board.
The Bratz movies were absolutely iconic! The animation was kinda shit, but I still find them really funny and interesting even today.

I was OBSESSED with Bratz, I had so many (thanks to my very generous Gran) and loved the Bratz activity books like the one about sleepovers with the most 2000s tips and activities like making a mixed CD tape for a friend as a gift. As a child of the '90s, thank you for reminding about whatsherface! I'm an adult graphic designer who was an artsy child, and remember loving these. I had a furniture set you could draw on in addition to the dolls. Yeah, the facelessness was a little creepy, but I appreciate the idea. And yes, the Liv dolls had glass eyes and had plastic painted on hair under the wigs.

There's this book I read (I'm not going to name it because I don't recommend it) which talked at length about the impact of Barbie in setting beauty standards and fashion trends in women who grew up playing with them (it was written in the mid 2000s) so it would make sense that now the generation that grew up playing bratz would also be heavily influenced by the dolls

I was born in 2004 but all these dolls were prominent in my life, this video brought so many fawned memories of playing around and also using my mom’s computer to play all the flash games. I always love the way you edit your videos and all the little details you put are like the cherry on top.

However: MyScene webisodes were my LIFE. I agree that they were older sister/friend archetypes. As the eldest of three girls in my family, I never had anyone to look up to so I really enjoyed the life they portrayed. The games were the best as well and I lived on these websites.
PollyPocket was fun in the late nineties and early 2000’s (I’m 25) but they got old quick.
Bratz and MyScene dolls were a staple in my childhood and I have my original first Chloe doll lol. I lived with her in my hands, even when I played DreamLife lmao. Ugh. The best.
When Monster High dolls came out years later (I was in highschool)-I actually bought a few just to collect. As a Universal Studios monster lover and designer of my own gothic monsters as a kid-I would have loved to add them to my Bratz and MyScene collection.
I know for sure that if Monster High dolls existed when I was little, they'd be most of the doll population in my toy box😂 They're spunky like bratz but a litte darker :) The movies are why I love them, though!

Although I had almost one of every doll on this list, BRATZ dolls will forever hold a special place in my heart because of how independent & diverse they were. & when I have a daughter hopefully they still make them so I can pass them on to her😍.

I owned 2 myscene dolls and they were honestly my favourtine dolls of all time. Their heads weren't as oversized and cartoonish looking as bratz while still having the same qualities. I loved the clothes and everything about them and still do. So sad they don't make them anymore

So many young girls and boy are first introduced to the idea of intentionally dressing for a look through dolls, and many doll lines are focused on emulating pop culture and fashion trends are being worn by older teens and adults. An excellent current example of this are the rainbow high dolls, with each doll having outfits that pay specific homage to the looks of a different famous designer or brand.

Bratz is STILL THAT DOLL I loved the show due to the diversity. I’m a dark skin black woman and finally seeing Sasha especially in the show being a stylish dark skin black girl! I had something to look up to and play with! Yes I’m an adult now I’m 25 but when I was young… I definitely didn’t play with Barbie… just being real bratz was truly the FIRST successful inclusive doll brand.. each girl was special… the “ethnic” friend wasn’t just a side character.
