I'm trying to get a pond going on the new plot. It's basically the old plastic water tank from my attic sunk into the bank at the back of the plot. The plan is to have fruit bushes, bee friendly flowers, spring bulbs and some other stuff I dug out of my garden at home. Was thinking of hunting for frog spawn, but if frogs just come by later in the year that's prob best. With any luck, I should get something move in before too long.
I have a 40 gallon plastic pond ( more of a pool as there is no mud ) , the deepest part is 18”. I am in Ontario near Toronto. The ice every year gets from 4 to 8” thick. This is the third year my single feeder goldfish has survived the winter with no air pump or running water. I rarely feed the fish too.
My sister has a little self contained pond in her yard about 3 feet at the deepest point. She put 3 goldfish in it 14 years ago, she's never fed them, never oxygenated the water she has schools of goldfish now. Some are almost a foot long.
Love your pond, Greg! I guess you answered the raccoon question...if it's deep enough the fish can hide. That has been a problem for me with a small fiberglass pond.
Well isn't that sweet. Amazing how nature works. I feel like digging a hole in my greenhouse. The water naturally accumulates in there. Needless to say it's a pond in there in the spring lol.
Haha, I've got a pond a little larger than yours where I had goldfish and a few koi. I never fed them either, and they did just fine. A couple of times over the years we had brutal cold & there were fish flash-frozen in 8" of ice...when it thawed the fish came back to life & started swimming around again. But then the raccoons found my little pond and ate almost al of the fish, and snails too. What the raccoons didn't get, the herons did. Now I've only got a few loaches left cleaning up the muck in the bottom of the pond.
Hey Greg...Thanks for the breakfast video! In any case I am not sure if the $5 was well spent or not but I can certainly assure you that the goldfish, knowing their lot in life, think it was money well spent! 😁 Have a great day man! Mike 🇨🇦 🍁 👍
Awesome video! So happy your fish made it threw the Winter! You have the perfect spot.
Yes, thanks

I guess depth really matters - Mines about 18" deep too at its deepest, maybe a little more in spots

I totally agree!
awesome video i agree! i wonder if the rocks could help also on sunnier days
That was a fun video. I never really can't get an accurate count of the fish. I think they just like messing with me. Have a great day get vitamin D.
There's about 12 or so
I've got to make me a goldfish pond
Any plans on going deeper or bigger or is this it for now?
For this year I'll keep it as is - but I'm making another pond in the center of the garden.
😎👍
Did you just buy koi from pet store? Any local minnows that could survive a pond this size through winter?
These were "feeder" fish - from the pet food store.
What was first purpose of the pond?
To gather water for the garden
Goldish are preferentially vegetarian. If your pond gets sunlight they will eat all of the algae that develops because of it.
How deep and how cold?
16" deep . Gets as cold as -20C sometimes
@@maritimegardening4887 Ok 🙂In Sweden we use cm. Is it inch ?
Them hardy perennial goldfish i see.
If it works, don’t fix it. Goldfish must have a natural life expectancy.
