- Hey guys so i wanted to see if i could increase my range or performance by putting in a higher grade fuel. After two days of driving my HEMI i can honestly say that i didn’t see a huge increase in my dodge charger and will probably be sticking with 87 from here on out as it doesn’t cause me any problems. Let me know what fuel you guys are using down below

Bought my RT brand new, never filled with anything but 89. Its a difference of usually 20 cents a gallon between 87 and 89 so maybe a couple bucks more? Worth my piece of mind. Also never let my fuel tank run that close to empty. Not a big deal once in a while but over time your fuel pumps probably running hotter with less fuel cooling it and leaving more room for condensation to develop and corrosion to occur. Maybe I'm overly cautious but it works for me 🤷♂️
When I got my 19 dodge charger rt I was putting the recommended gas which is the 89 and I would add octane booster. Now I went full E85 and I love it.
Do you get more pops with the E85?
No I don't , it runs way better tho.

I have a 2015 r/t charger and I started out putting 89 octane in it, then maybe after a year or so I put 93 in it and a major difference when I accelerate and the way it rides which a lot stronger.
P.S.
I've had 2 vehicles in my past that had "89 recommended, 87 acceptable" and my long-term experience running 87 octane in them was not good. First, '89 T-bird Supercoupe supercharged V6, driven fast, but not hard. It started "ticking" at 120,000 miles and broke a piston spectacularly at 130,000 miles. Next, '99 Olds Intrique with "Shortstar" 3.5L DOHC V6, driven sedately like a family sedan. About 130,000 miles started making bad "low end" noises like the T-bird, so traded it. Both were 1st year production for those engines so may have been some initial engineering/build bugs, but also could have been their knock-sensor/ignition timing couldn't completely overcome the tendency for pre-detonation. Since then, I've only followed "Recommended" and not "Acceptable".
thats so true, yeah it might be the wiser decision for know for me to run 89 instead of the 87 which the dealer says is "acceptable". This car for sure doesn't deserve the minimum haha, i honestly was hoping i would get better performance or range using the higher octane but guess not in this case. I really appreciate you sharing experiences you've had running lower grades in other cars. It really makes you think twice about whether or not you should follow what the dealer says is "acceptable".
I run Circle K/Shell 93. My RT runs way better on 93 than it did on 89. Especially since I use a pedal commander and drive in track mode daily. Using 87 will definitely limit HP, and could possibly give it the "hemi tick".

'23 R/T owner here. Manual states "89 Octane Recommended - 87 Octane acceptable."
My local Sam's Club has best pricing, but have just 87 and 93 like your Costco. I could fill half and half to get 90, but it's too much hassle to guess at mixture and running my card twice so I just use 93. Their pricing for 93 is same or less than 89 at Shell, BP, Mobil, etc. anyway. Traveling I'll use 89 or 91 instead of 87.

Bro you totally right but I found a big difference. When I use 93 at Costco or Sam I only get around 242 mpg / 262mhg. But when I use 89 (any gas station) I get 362 mpg / 382 mpg.
I just got surprised.
Have a 19 challenger hellcat redeye and always put 93 and always use mobile/ExxonMobil or shell if no mobile around

2016 charger rt, my owners manual says 89 recommended. The bigger engines should use 91+
The difference in gas octane level is its resistance to combustion. The lower the gas rating the more combustible it is, so e87 will burn ever so slightly quicker and the combustions happen ever so slightly sooner. None of it is relevant unless your engine is tuned to compensate for the new fuel to air ratio and combustion timing. Any gains in mpg or power are negligible with no tune. The new demon170 is the only dodge engine that does on the fly engine remapping based on octane level.
Got a 22 RT plus, i put 89 for best performance, i put 87 when i initially got my RT and lets just say it didn't really run that good 😅
Hmmm maybe i need to try it a bit more Idk man. Might try some 89 from shell and see if notice a difference. When you are saying that its running better on 89 are you noticing an increase in performance or range for your vehicle?

I only put 91 octane in my car, I live in Oregon it’s hard to find 93
I always put 93 in my RT, I get typically 330-350 miles unless I’m on a road trip I can upto 420 mpg

@@roxymopar I don’t know what year you have but I have 2021 where my eco mode cuts on instead of pressing a button or going through menus so it cuts on at a crushing speed and I don’t typically push it till it’s time to get active lol. I’m usually around 20-22 mpg on average in the city and when I’m driving on long distances I get up to 26. From ATL to Destin Florida I got upto 26.6 mpg with about 420 miles to empty on the way back. I didn’t even need to fill up on the way back. Now I got my jlt intake in so I know I can get more

I have a 2017 and although I have seen a lot of people say RT runs in 89 according to manual, I can’t confirm it. I tried to look it up but they go back and forth with 89 and 93. I was told 93 is a lot better for it but I been wanting to start doing 89 to see what happens.

Maybe Its just me but I feel a big difference between 93 and 89. Seems like my RT has better gas mileage and throttle response on premium. That’s all I was pumping during the pandemic when 93 was like $1.98 in my area. You can definitely get by with 89 and not being tuned but If you don’t mind paying a little more just use 93 💯
here bro 93 and 89 are a big difference in price. after this video i’ve been using 89 and in all honesty i think i’m getting a bit more power in comparison to the 87
I've always used 89 on my vehicles and only stuck to Valero gas stations. No issues to report. I had never used 87 on my HEMI so I couldn't say if there's a difference.

But either way, if you do start hearing it, don’t wait to get that fixed.
You are not supposed to use a grade higher than 91 octane. If you do, you will permanently damage your engine. I own a Chrysler 300C with a 5.7L V8. It's owner's manual warns against using a grade higher than 91 Octane.

If the owners Manuel recommends 89 grade and you use 91 or 93 you simply will be wasting money because you're not going to get any better performance. Be smart and stop wasting money.
87 says in the manual but I tuned it to 93 and the car runs great, 0-60 with the mods I have is 4.5 seconds.

@@roxymopar yeah bro I worked hard to get it there, it has 87MM bbk larger throttle body, jba 1 7/8 long tube headers, corsa extreme catback, jbl intake, 3.09 differential, 93 Diablo tune, pcm unlock, stage 3 Texas speed cam. I stay here in Houston Texas bro if you ever wanna cruise around. And I don’t bro I’ve never taken it to the drag strip. I wanna at least make 550WHP before taking it to the drag strip haha. Right now I’m pushing around 475.

The RT is a great daily and packs enough punch to have a bit of fun. I personally think its one of the best cars on the market for someone who wants a reliable daily but also a car that can get up and have fun. I think i made a pros and cons video on the channel a while back at (4 months of ownership). Might make a new one here in a bit!
I try to use 93 every trip but I’ll definitely use 89 on a low pocket day
To be honest I had no idea what to put in my 2014 cop car. its a heavy car and almost all gas today is crap. That being said mid grade is most likely the sweet spot. Back in the day we understood that you really could not seat of the pants feel anything less than about 10 hp. I doubt there are 2 hp difference between the grades the 'hemi tick' as I understand is caused by the older lifters with smaller needle bearings and long idling times (cop cars) where the oil pressure is the lowest. That is what happened to my cop car and there is a service they did at around 50k where they replaced the cam and lifters because of a roller bearing failure on a lifter. Hopefully they used the newer lifters that are now standard and have bigger bearings. you can use a Hellcat oil pump or and aftermarket high volume one. both give about 20% more oil pressure at idle. I probly won't do that unless I am in there for some other reason.

@@Eukuri0 not sure what you mean. The county spent $4800 at a dealers to replace the cam and lifters. I haven't spent anything on it other than bought a full size spare and a center consol.

87 is not good for a performance car. Since u have 5.7 u should be good but running anything more than 89 would be best. Also hemi tick is caused by consistently idling for long periods of time.

The HEMI Tick is caused by low oil pressure at idle or long idling, which causes it to throw a valve. Has Nothing to do with the gas you use.
