    High porosity here! I have literally gotten in heated discussions with people because they keep stating high porosity is due to damage. No, ma’am, this is the hair growing from my scalp. So, this was really needed. ❤️

      It’s definitely part genetics. I have very similar hair to my mother’s. Hers is high porosity and she hasn’t had her hair lifted/dyed or relaxed in multiple years. Her hair isn’t damaged but it’s thirsty for protein! Its definitely annoying for people to try and tell you something you know about your own hair, but don’t let it phase you. 💕

    Best test for high porosity in my opinion,take a strand of hair and run your fingers through it,you will feel tiny bumps in the strand ,that’s high porous hair.the tiny bumps are literally your open cuticles.
    The water test can be confusing to many.

      I personally don’t believe that mist is going to immediately absorb into your hair because it’s not a constant flow, but with high porosity hair, it definitely absorbs water “better.” it may not be immediately but it definitely takes less work. If I would have rubbed my hair a few times, I’m sure the section would have been wet. Thanks for watching 💕

      I know I’m late but YES I was confused bc everything else made my hair seem high porosity BUT when I sprayed it with water my hair did have water beads. But its easy to work through and get wet and my hair on its own drys very quickly unless I add products, my hair does like protein, and seems to absorb moisture quickly but loses it just as quickly and I am color treated and use heat. I’m just gonna trust my gut and say my hair is more on the high porosity side.

    • @vaneshcaa
      @vaneshcaa 4 года назад +14

      @@FaithsStardust the cup test isn't entirely accurate. My hair floated which would indicate low porosity, but my hair is actually normal porosity. I was able to determine this when I realised that my hair doesn't take a long time to get wet in the shower, and isn't sensitive to protein or heavy products, which are signs of low porosity. Another way to determine your porosity is running your fingers up your hair strand, if it's smooth it's low, if it feels quite rough and the cuticles are lifted, that's high, and somewhere in the middle is normal. Hope this helps!

I don't use any products, to be honest - I just wash my hair daily, it air-dries pretty fast and that's that. I don't know much about how to care for locs but like Azraa said below, maybe try deep conditioners or masks weekly, and maybe try covering your hair and using a heat cap or sit under a hooded dryer for deeper penetration. Then maybe try applying your leave -in/moisturizer with a steamer or in the shower where there is steam, which would help open your hair cuticles if you are low porosity.

      @Jada my daughter (who has locs) uses TGIN honey & olive oil deep conditioner and loves it. She says it really penetrates her locs. Gotta put a plastic cap on with or without heat. Plastic cap is key. Also put plastic cap on for 10-15 after you apply a leave in; really helps your hair absorb product. Melanin is another product that she loves as well.

I have been doing care for low porosity. My hair always feels dry unless I use grease but then it feels mushy with grease. Let me explain, if feels soft but at same time lifeless. Does that make sense? I have been experimenting with protein, doing the rice water. The roots feel soft, but the ends feel brittle ( I only spray it on my scalp) anyways it’s such a mess at the moment. Not feeling it. I might have to cut it and start over

    • @itsmedayshab1811
      @itsmedayshab1811  4 года назад +5

      I recommend looking at the video by Tiana Michelle's video "What Low Porosity Hair Looks Like. If your hair doesn't react like hers then you are probably normal-high porosity. I have heard many people say that the cup test doesn't work well, and my hair didn't respond the way "high porosity" hair "should" respond. Kind of like your experience. When you say your hair is mushy that is a sign that your hair may be lacking protein. Feel free to watch my video "What is A Protein Treatment" where I talk about the signs that you may need a protein treatment and explain some other things about protein treatments and porosity. If you are high porosity, protein conditioners and rice water might not be doing enough for your hair. You might need a treatment, which will help reconstruct your hair. Now, it's up to you whether you want to get a treatment or do one yourself. You can also try to find a cosmetologist and have them do a consultation on your hair and let you know what you need.

      @@williejay2011 I have heard of people with multiple porosities. You definitely have to treat each area differently to get it all moisturized. I know its frustrating. I have been on my natural journey for 9 years now and I'm really just starting to figure it out in the past year. It definitely takes time. If you haven't maybe try different gels. I've used ecostyle but I don't recall it helping reduce my shrinkage, but I have used gels by The Mane Choice that work well for me. I honestly don't even worry about wash n gos in the summer because I'm from NC and the humidity is a beast here so I know my hair will be shrunken up. But in the winter time as long as I add a butter/cream then a gel/jelly I know i'm good.

    Okay when you run running water on your hair it will lay down because water molecules attach to each other & will be a weight on your hair. I don’t see how this will tell someone the difference between high and low porosity hair. All hair will fall down under running water.

      @itsmedayshab1811  4 года назад

      When you say it takes up to 10 hours to absorb, do you mean that you can see the “white residual” product on your hair for up to 10 hours?

    • @itsmedayshab1811
      @itsmedayshab1811  4 года назад +2

      Since my hair doesn’t take that long to absorb the residual product, I’m thinking that you may be low porosity since yours takes that long. But other than that adding product to your hair will increase the time it takes for your hair to dry, so I think 10 hours to dry is normal. For reference, I don’t take out my twists or braids for at least 12 hours to insure they are dry, and I keep Bantu knots in for even more time.

    • @itsmedayshab1811
      @itsmedayshab1811  4 года назад

      @@Journeylivin There is a such thing as medium/normal porosity. In this case, it wouldn't take long for your hair to absorb water/products easily and also retain moisture without extra work. I would say that when I add products to my hair, it takes at least 10-12 hours for my twists to dry and even more time for bantu knot outs. I usually blowdry my wash n gos because it takes a long time to air dry, so I think its normal for hair to take a lot of time airdrying especially with added product.

      Make sure you’re getting enough protein. If you are, try an Aztec clay mask with apple cider vinegar or just an apple cider vinegar rinse (1/4 cup act, 1 cup water) on your hair and scalp after washing and conditioning (for frizz and pH balancing the hair). Feel free to look at my most recent video on how to get frizz free curls for more info. For dry hair, look into using butters and creams before using a gel. Its definitely possible to have more than on porosity, but definitely make sure that some areas of your hair don't just have more build up. I'm not a professional but I think the best thing you can do is make sure you properly cleanse your hair (and detox when necessary), deep condition and try to find moisturizing products to put on your hair. Properly moisturizing your hair starts with cleansing. If you can get that shaft open and CLEAN then the rest should be easy.
      Since our hair is made of protein, any porosity can benefit from treatments, it just all about finding a balance. Also, talking to a professional might help

      What works for me is I highly recommend Kinky Tresses, Miche Beauty and The Mane Choice. The Mane Choice is hit or miss for many people because they have glycerin in alot of their products and some people are glycerin sensitive and it makes their hair crusty or dry. Feel free to watch these videos to see my favs: ruclips.net/video/KKhPI7hklsM/видео.html // ruclips.net/video/BwmDdnmTuSE/видео.html // ruclips.net/video/1ibJtm1LPks/видео.html
      Also, make sure you're getting enough protein. This helps strengthen the hair cuticle. ACV rinses or adding it to a clay wash helps balance the pH of the hair and seal your cuticle layer so that it can hold more moisture.

    Does your hair like proteïnn based products? Because on most websites they say high porosity hair loves proteïn, but my hair doesn't like proteïn. Maybe products with very low proteïn in it. The Sheamoisture curl enhancing smoothie for example, has too much proteïn for me. Then the Curls blueberry bliss reparative leave in conditioner, my hair can handle that. But i noticed that if there is a lot of coconut oil in it it, it makes my hair dry and stiff.

    • @itsmedayshab1811
      @itsmedayshab1811  Год назад

      The short answer is yes, but I don't overdue it, especially since my hair has changed alot since I created this video. At the time, I made sure that I did more protein treatments because I had color treated hair and hair that was growing out from the color treatment. I do use some products that have protein in them, mostly deep conditioners, but I would say that I mostly focus on using products that provide moisture and keep my moist & sealed throughout the duration of my styles. It's good to make sure you use products that moisturize your hair
      I do the aphogee protein treatment every few months and occasionally use the Miche Beauty, Kinky Tresses, and Mielle Babassu & Mint protein deep conditioners, which all have moisturizing properties.
      That being said, you can overload your hair with protein, so its not always necessary to use products that have a significant amount of protein in them. I've had good experiences with The Mane Choice, Miche, Kinky Tresses, some Mielle, and Curls Poppin Pineapple collection when it comes to moisture and definition. I've personally never been into Shea Moisture.
      Find a good cleanser (don't be scared of that squeaky clean/stripped feeling every once in a while), moisturizing deep conditioner, and a good styler, and only add protein when you feel like your hair is weaker, less elastic, and more frizzy. Just experiment.

I don’t have to use special techniques to do so. You can look at my other videos. My wash n go lasted 6 days because I use butters and creams to moisturize and seal my hair. Relaxers can definitely cause damage to our hair, however, I think that how we take care of our hair after relaxer is just as important. When we chemically treat our hair (relaxers, color treatments, we have to make sure that we prioritize protein treatments as well so that we can make sure that the hair that has broken down is bonded back together. Once the hair is damaged, we only have the option to trim it/cut it off for it to truly thrive.

So for years now I’ve been doing what you do, and my hair is growing just fine. The purpose of the conditioners are to lower the cuticle again after having been raised by the higher ph shampoo, but the leave-ins do exactly the same thing, 🤔 so it’s a no brainier for me. It doesn’t surprise me that so many naturals are struggling with extremely dry hair, coz their leave-ins and moisturisers cannot get past the thick butters and other ingredients left behind from their conditioners that just simply coat the hair.

    -gets wet fast in the shower
    -dries fairly well
    -spraying hair with water creates beads that run right off
    I’m confused 😭

      It can be very confusing. A lot of variables are at play. Honestly if you can focus in on a routine that will help support the health and growth of your hair then that is what really matters.
