I love my curls but I hated the fact that I felt that the way in which a wash day turn out, it very much depended on luck hahaha but then I started understanding more about my hair type, porosity, humidity, ingrédients and so on, and I can see that I can more or less help my hair to look good haha enphasizing in the more or less haha. I think menopause causes this too. I am a mid 50s woman and a health care provider so have learned a lot about female hormones and I think there is a strong connection. It may also be that as we are closer to mid life, we may color our hair more to hide gray. But I have just learned about hair porosity and I have high porosity and I really got worse when I started into menopause. Thanks for this video.

      There is definitely a connection between hair texture and estrogen levels. Not only have I read a lot about the subject, I've experienced the effects first hand as a person with PCOS who has finally "levelled out" hormonally. It's been a roller coaster ride since puberty hit. Most of the time, I didn't dye my hair. Now I'm back to dying and still have better hair with my hormone treatments than when I didn't dye and my hormones were haywire.

    The ingredients to avoid during humidity literally blew my mind. I live in Florida which is humid nearly year-round, and I've been using those ingredients. Especially the flaxseeds and honey. And I never could figure out how to tame my frizzy hair. I would go to another state or country and my hair would look amazing. The moment I step ground in Florida my hair instantly frizzes up. It doesn't help living here with fine hair with high porosity.

    REALLY HELPFUL! I'm just starting my CG journey & watch a LOT of your stuff because of the fine low density similarities.
    I think I have slightly above normal porosity, even though my hair is virgin and I only heat style by diffusing.
    I have all the symptoms.
    I just wanted to share a few things I learned.
    The float test made me think i had low-po since my hair floated. After watching a vid on low-po it is clear I don't.
    I think what happened to me is that my hair was so fine it did not break the surface tension of the water and sink.
    A few stylist sights mentioned sometimes high-po hair can take a long time to dry (a symptom of low-po)...this is because it absorbed waaay too much moisture.
    If you want to spend $50, you can send your hair to the lab My Main Bio and get it analyzed...I havent done this.
    Thanks so much for all the great info!

Where I live it has been very humid for the longest time and my hair has really suffered, a lot of breakage and just awful. I also have quite a few gray hairs which are super frizzy and unruly AND on top of all that I have an oily scalp so unless I use a shampoo that really cleans well I end up with an oily mess. • @auburrito5168

    I'm about a year into the curly method and still haven't figured out my porosity. My hair is coarse and medium to high-density 2b/c waves. The float test is inaccurate, but I have tried other things. The squeak test, where you rub a strand of hair between your fingers - my hair squeaks, which I thought of as a sign of high porosity. If I spray my hair with water, it beads on top, and in the shower it takes a while to get it completely saturated, but it doesn't repel water either, which makes me wonder if it's just that my hair is thick enough to just take a while. I'm not sure about how protein sensitive I am, I can usually tell right away if I need protein or moisture without going to either extreme - again I wonder if it's because my strands are thick enough to be lenient. Though I do have to use more protein-free moisture treatments than those with protein since some of my daily stylers have protein in them. I think the most confusing thing though is that if I use more than a pea-size amount of leave-in or cream, my hair gets super weighed down and I can probably refresh with product once or twice before having to cleanse again because it just sits on my hair. I use the Kinky Curly Come Clean most wash days to get rid of build-up and I cleanse at least twice a week. Even more odd though is that Polyquats are my sworn enemy. Every product that has it in the ingredients IMMEDIATELY makes my hair look overly greasy and weighed down and I have NO clue why. It's like it just sits on top of my strands. I don't know. Maybe I'm medium porosity, but the way products feel like they just sit on top of my hair really confuses me.

    • @MsLinoi
      @MsLinoi 4 года назад +1

      Lol I think we have quite similar hair! I'm a 2b/2c aswell and I'm kinda confused wether I'm high or normal porosity as some stuff is really confusing. My hair is also medium to coarse and medium density. What is confusing for me is that my hair seems to always need tons of moisture. It does need a little protein too but not as much as it needs moisture. And when I used a shampoo that contains polyquats and protein for two weeks my scalp startet freaking out! Got dry and flaky and itchy but greasy at the same time and I got more Frizz...
      But I can use tons of leave in if the leave in isn't too thick and heavy.

    • @lorainemcgillivray77
      @lorainemcgillivray77 4 года назад +1

      @@MsLinoi Not every ingredient works for everybody and you can be sensitive to anything. I'm afraid it is a bit of trial and error. I have long/thick/course/highlighted/high density hair that despite being high porosity takes ten hours to dry naturally - but I have a LOT of hair. I don't get greasy hair due to it being dry, as is my scalp. I can use polyquats with no issue, but my hair is very glycerin sensitive and is a frizzy mess when stylers with glycerin are used. I need a lot of protein and a lot of moisture and alternate my deep conditioners accordingly. Glycerin may work very well for you as it is hydrating without a lot of weight. Everyone is different. Try to buy travel kits or trial sizes of products as you discover what does or doesn't work for your hair. The cgm is time intensive but the results are worth it once you figure out what your hair needs. Wishing you both great hair days.

      @@lorainemcgillivray77 glycerin works fine for me at the moment but it really depends on the weather I think my hair typically doesn't like glycerine when it's super cold or when it rains a lot. But I haven't tried it in the summer yet. I find it really interesting how everyone responds different to ingredients. The gurly girl method is lots of research and trying out lots of things which can be fun but it can also cause you to waste a lot of money :D

    I find I have normal porosity hair on the under layers of my hair and high porosity on the canopy and outer layers of my hair mostly due to past heat damage and some color damage. Though it seems that my hair is the healthier after 8 months CGM it still seems to act like it is high porosity. Do you ever try to treat the high porosity areas of your hair differently than the rest of it? Or just use products meant for high porosity and your normal porosity hair tends to not mind since it seems to like either end of the porosity scale.

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  4 года назад +4

      Great question! Yes and yes. So sometimes I will add additional curl cream or leave in to my dry ends on the high porosity area, and apply more product in general to the top layer. The bottom layer that is normal porosity gets weighed down easily, and likes to hang longer/looser, so I apply less product there. I could do a video on it!

    I have course low porosity hair. I thought I had high porosity hair for a while but when I watched a video on low porosity hair signs, I had all of them but 1🤦‍♀️. I had no idea!🧐😂. I also took two different porosity hair tests and they both said I had low porosity🤦‍♀️🙈🙊

      Can I ask which signs made you realize you actually have low porosity hair? I can’t figure mine out. I feel like I check off a lot of boxes for both. I guess that could mean I have medium porosity, but that doesn’t help me narrow down product options. None of the tests I do help. The individual strands of my hair are too fine to feel bumps or smoothness. And products my hair used to love are horrible for my hair now. I really am struggling to figure it out haha

    One thing that has always confused me is that influencers say to only pay attention to the first five or six ingredients in a product. If protein is not listed in the first five or six ingredients but is listed further down, would you consider that product to have enough protein to make a difference?

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  4 года назад +1

      I’m not sure, since they dont label the % ingredients 😔 all we can tell is the lower on the list, the lower the amount. I would just test the product and see if it bounces up your hair and makes it defined (usually what protein helps with)

  • @Rachelsjourney

    So many great tips and advice. I’ve been wanting to learn more about the product ingredients but didn’t know where to start. I have a very similar hair type - high porosity, fine and low density. So far I have focused on protein rich deep conditioners but I would like to try alternating a protein DC with a moisturizing DC. I thought you recently recommended a moisturizing deep conditioner but I cannot find that reference anywhere. Can you or someone point me in the right direction? BTW a glycerin free gel that works well for me is Giavanni’s LA Hold

    Here is going to be some word vomit but I am so desperate... for 37 years I have been trying to conquer my curls. I think k hormones have changed my hair to where it isn't as curly and now I want it to be. It can't be THAT damaged because I NEVER heat dry (always air dry) and probably get it straightened/highlighted 3 times a year. I have extremely porous hair. The bottom layer doesn't curl like the top (the top sucks up moisture and easily frizzes). Should I detox my hair for starters? I use a cheap deep leave-in conditioner and shower with a cheap conditioner bc I have to use so so much to even give my hair moisture. Another thing.... 99.9% of the time my hair is pulled up bc if it is down it is instantly frizzy and also I am a very active person so it needs to be up. Could this be damaging it as well??? I want to start embracing my curly hair bc I know it can be beautiful but then i try a product or technique i think will help only to find it doesnt and i get discouraged and give up. HELP HELP HELP!

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  3 года назад +2

      You can do either. It depends on what benefit you’re trying to get from the acv. To clarify, you can use it first. To seal the cuticle, soften, and rebalance the hair’s pH you can use it last. When using it last you have to rinse really well to get the smell out.
