- In 2008, Marvel Studios released Iron Man, a film that would cement the future of the studio and leave a lasting impact on film and popular culture. Starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Iron Man was a critical and commercial success, helping to launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Marvel Studios’ Iron Man, Marvel Studios President and Producer Kevin Feige and Executive Producer / Director Jon Favreau take a look back at the film's origins, share insights into its development, and discuss its legacy.

I think it's a tie between him and Star Lord. Chris Pratt was a complete fluke. He was denied role after role and then auditioned for Star Lord even though he didn't think he had a chance of getting the role and now here we are and he's perfect.
Fun fact: Tom Cruise was the first choice of playing Iron Man, but he rejected it.

It’s very telling when they say RDJ was up with them at two in the morning brainstorming rewrites and such. RDJ was so invested and that really shines through.
I love how Clark Gregg got his job just because he was the director's neighbour. And then that led to one of the best Marvel TV shows

I can’t believe it’s been 15 years. I still remember watching Iron Man as a child, understanding nothing but flashes and magic. And as we grew older, it all made much more sense. Nostalgia 🥺

I was referring to the metaphorical experience where the flashy visuals (his armor, flying) captured our imagination. We don't care much about the plot/backstory or its further connection then. Nostalgic memories, you know! 🥲
Like Langoliers for me when I was a kid. It was a whole experience, lots of it filled in by my own imagination, I was terrified of those things! Saw it later and it is a horrible movie lol.

I was at that Comic Con where they first showed the footage - it was unreal - folks there lost their minds, and they weren’t Marvel Stans yet… we all knew we witnessed something incredible. And there was a genuine encore to show it again. It was glorious. So nice seeing Jon get the respect he deserves for setting the tone for the MCU.
The "cheer moment" for me was when Stark rescues the villagers, leaves them the bad guy, and says, "He's all yours". People cried out "YEAH!" in the theatre.
Here's to the next 15 indeed!

Kevin Feige and Jon Favreau are like the Stan Lee and Jack Kirby of Marvel Studios. Even if they aren't around in another 10-15 years doing stuff with Marvel, the stories and characters will continue to thrive under new direction.
One of my film school professors used Iron Man to help teach how a three act structure works in a movie. Very well made movie and incredibly iconic.
I was 7 years old when the first Iron Man came out, I'm now 22. I have grown up with these characters always in my life and I've cheered and cried for them. Seeing Tony's heroic sacrifice shook me and I'll never forget how I felt among all my friends in a packed theater as tears streamed down my face as I watched my childhood hero die and everyone say goodbye to him. I'll always have a special place in my heart for Iron Man. Corny I know but I grew up with the guy in a weird way and he had always kinda been there so when he died it was such a gut punch for me.
My best mate was 28 when we watched it and could barely hold back his tears. It's alright mate.
That's how it's supposed to be bro no need to call it corny you should be invested into the character the amount of work that goes behind making these films possible makes it worth the worldwide gut punch
Im older. I watched the old Iron Man cartoon in the 90s. But those moments in the theaters with fans are incredible. They’re unique. They’re special.

I was 9 years old when Iron-Man was released in 2008. I’m 24 now. What a MARVELous journey it has been.
This awesome to hear. What an experience it mustve been growing up with a franchise that dominates for all the right reasons giving the audience great stories to laugh, cry and be interconnected before we knew it was going to be interconnected with an a specific goal. I was 25 when it came out. So my experience with Marvel has been adult based. But I really think it's cool how there those who were children and now are adults still watching Marvel.
Marvel really got this right and it can never be replicated the same way by anyone else. One can try but since it's already been done, the element of surprise is not there.

@@ScarletW82 It's a powerful thing; I remember growing up watching the DC Batman movies in the 90s and just dreaming about Marvel doing the same thing for Spider-Man… kids who grew up with the MCU will have a better appreciation for the franchise.

For all my entire life, I witnessed only few movies that fully engaged with the whole audience. From laughing, gasping, grasping, cheering, & standing ovation at the end.
Ironman is one of it.
I saw Iron Man in theaters with my dad and brother on opening weekend. Safe to say I never looked back from that moment.

This is what strengthened my relationship with my oldest daughter. Since day one we have caught every movie opening day or weekend. Still continues to this day. We thank everyone involved and of course the man himself, Stan Lee.
Ant-Man and Captain Marvel are the ones I watch the most with my daughter.
Fun fact: This film is in the National Film Registry and is being preserved for being historically, culturally or aesthetically significant. 👍

Iron Man, to me, is about recovery from addiction and finding purpose. Robert embodied that irl and in the movie. I am so proud of him. Many thanks to Jon for giving him another shot. The world really does feel better with Robert's Iron Man in it.

oh please, the movies didn't even tackle his alcoholism. The character was watered down all to hell, and personality wise iron Man in the comics was nothing like the RDJ version. Marvel changed the Stark character in the comics _after_ RDJ's version became popular... same as they did with StarLord.
@Samur/Aye I'm only referring to the movies. The symbolism is subtle and nuanced, but it is there throughout his journey throughout the MCU. Remember, addiction is not solved in 1 step, nor is it ever finished; even at 12. Also, I did preface my comment with "to me" therefore subject to my own interpretation.

One of the biggest strengths of Marvel Studios is in your casting, and it shows in how successful the movies were. Hats off. Well done.
Ok. I'm 70 years old. I was one of those kids back in 62,63, who bought every Marvel Comic off the rack the day it came out. I read and reread those comics and to this day can remember the feelings that they stirred up in me. I remember panels of art and dialog vividly. So when the Marvel Studios movies came out, those hidden Easter Eggs that referenced back to the comics that I loved were a brilliant surprise. Sure you had to make movies that fit new generations of fans, and in some cases that meant changing the origin stories or story lines. But you did it with a nod to us old timers and now days, I look forward to once again, not being able to wait till the next "installment" of the Marvel Universe comes out. Hats off to you for not forgetting us.

This film was a watershed moment for filmgoing culture in general. I remember seeing forums everywhere with people saying there was no way a comics-styled shared universe was going to work with Avengers and whatever else
This is probably something that will never happen again, at least the zeitgeist of actually seeing it come together from a studio and character this unproven to the mainstream
I remember how surreal it was seeing avengers for the first time. Having all these leading actors from separate films in one team up film. I’ll never forget it.

yep, no matter how much money DC throw at the "DCU", it just won't hit the same way, and probably won't stick the same way either. marvel did it right, did it first, and did it naturally. they deserve to hold the legacy.
with Bob Iger back at disney/marvel studios, and Bob Chapek gone (thank fck), hopefully they're going back to quality over quantity. the start of phase 4 was bumpy but i think they can course-correct back to the right output:quality balance that they did so well for the first 3 phases. i'm not saying all of phase4 is bad, but we do know what hasn't been great about it.
It literally changed how we consume tv and movies. Nothing is stand alone serialized anymore, everything is one long arc. TV shows are increasingly moving towards mini series of 6-12 episodes.
Fun fact: When I was younger, one of my teachers gave us an assignment where we had to analyze characters from certain stories based on a single part of those stories. One of these was the dummy grenade scene from Capt. America 1. Another one of my teachers that year sometimes uses marvel or the avengers as examples for assignments. It is crazy thinking about how none of this would've happened if it weren't for this movie. And that just makes me so happy.
As a member of gen-X, we ALL knew Downey was Tony Stark for DECADES. It was just a question of whether he could stay out of rehab (or prison) long enough to film an Iron Man movie.
Mad props to Favreau and Marvel for having the guts to make Iron Man a reality.

I can't believe it's been 15 years. Wow, how time flies!
I was 17 when it came out; I'm 32 now. I went with my then-boyfriend and his family the day after it opened, and I remember we had to get tickets for a later showing when the initial showing we were to go see had sold out. Oh, and it was chaos trying to find seats. I had never seen a more packed and chaotic theater since the second "Lord of the Rings", and man, everyone went absolutely nuts. Just the excitement, the thrills, the anticipation, and the satisfaction and surprise on how amazing the film was. It's one of those memories that I'll cherish for a long time. Of course, there were other films where that feeling would be similar, but this one was special. "Iron Man" has a special place in my heart. Thank you, Marvel, and thank you, Jon Favreau.
Did it work out between you two?
I was a casual marvel enjoyer between the earlier raimi spiderman movies and the xmen and fantastic 4, but NOTHING sold me like Iron Man did. I loved every bit of Iron Man. Still gets me gitty today watching some of the parts that became a staple for the mcu as a whole. I am Iron Man.
This was just a delight to watch! I know Fiege doesn’t like being in the public eye too much its really cool to see him sit and chat with his friend about the movie :)
I hope Feige keeps his Word & sits down with the Creators when other Infinity Saga MCU Flicks turn 15!

The casting, respect for the source material, music and tone were all up to the mark. Many MCU have come and gone since then, some good, some bad, but this one still remains the gold standard.

I really hope all of the young people that grew up with these movies, and to some degree take them for granted, watch this video. It was never a sure thing. We’re very lucky to have these films.
Jon is a legend in not just a Marvel legend but a Disney legend. He’s made his mark in that company.
The Mandolorian? Yeah good shout out! t took me forever to finally watch it but once I did I was really impressed with how he was able to link it to the Star Wars franchise and yet separate it into its own thing! Great show.
Have been too busy to watch the new season but Memorial Day weekend seems like perfect time to binge.
Jungle Book was solid
The Lion King too. That ultimately gave Favreau the confidence that they had the technology needed to make The Mandalorian. Stagecraft was born, and the rest is (recent) history!
Oh man, this movie was (and it still is) amazing, Robert Downey Jr really was born to play Tony Stark, I still miss him and Steve Rogers in the MCU nowadays, good times when Marvel just wanted to tell good stories, with good and complex characters, and nothing more.
I still think the most amazing movie would be if someone could blend 1 and 2 together seamlessly into one epic film. Obviously would need reshoots to do it right due to actor changes but I never really cared for the 3rd act of IM1 that much. The end of IM2 was so much better.
Iron Man 2's ending is also similarly abrupt. Vanko dies in 1 min lol
@@nikilragav My main issue with IM1 is its just the cliched "mirror villain". I mean, IM2 pretty much is as well but at least it isn't so blatant.
@@JohnVanderbeck mirror villain got overused in Marvel for sure (IM1, IM2, Ant-Man, Black Panther, etc). As a character, Stane is pretty different from Tony Stark, tho.
Iron man 2 holds a special place in my heart, my grandmother is stone deaf and my cinema did a viewing with subtitles (the only movie I know of even today).
Got to go to the cinema with her and for her to experience the cinema for the first time without being left out was magical to me as a kid and still is.
I would honestly listen to hours of this conversation on the details of Iron Man coming together from these guys’ perspective. I really hope there are more of these for the other movies and they’re even longer!!

@@kristinewilson5353 Joseph "Eddie from Stanger Things" Quinn would make an excellent Tony Stark. There are plenty of James Bonds, Spider-Men (No Way Home had 3 separate Spider-Men), Batman (Flash is about to have to separate Batmen in one movie) plenty of Supermen actors, Catwomen, Jokers, young and old X-Men characters in a single movie, and I can keep going. Plus, after collecting Iron Man comics for 30+ years, I have seen Tony Stark drawn to look differently with each different artist, from Tom Selleck to Tom Cruise to even a young Charles Bronson. So I can imagine another actor as Tony Stark/Iron Man.
I watched Ironman when I was in 10th grade, and today I am still watching all Marvel movies with my kid. This interview just brought back all my childhood memories. Kudos to Marvel for pulling this off for 15 years.
Two legends here talking about a legendary movie, a legendary character, my favourite character; Iron Man.
This movie means so much to me. My dad tooo me to see as many superhero movies as he could when I was a kid. This one came out when I was 12 and we were there Night 1. The part where Iron Man shoots at the last tank and then turns and walks away was one where we looked at each other and knew that we this movie was special.
We actually had to see it twice because we missed the post credit scene the first time and we loved it so much we didn’t mind watching it again to see it.
I miss him so much. He’d love to see the heights the MCU would eventually reach .
This was a daring project from start to finish. People do not know what a risk they took with this movie. It was a gusty move, and they NAILED it. I consider this movie one of the best movies ever made. The casting, the direction, the cinematography, the actors, clothing, just all came together perfectly.

John Favreau's love of comics and original films/shows is one of the biggest reasons we are blessed with the MCU and expanded Star Wars universe. He is legit one of my biggest inspirations and favorite film icons actor/director/producer. Thank you John.
17:17 This right here, where Jon literally says: “There’s people who know it better than you do.” He literally mentions all of comic book fans and what we expect them to do to pay respect and support for these beloved characters. This is why the MCU was a success because it understood what the fans wanted but also for the general audience as well, which is kinda hard to do both when it comes to pleasing people in my opinion.
The first iron man film is still easily One of my top 10 favorite superhero films. Everything about it just works so well and I can't thank Kevin or Jon enough for not only making this film but spawning an amazing franchise in the process. Thank you both.

I remember watching ironman in my teenage years, unknowing that there was a post credit scene to then just let the movie roll and then seeing the Thor teaser. That was a game changing moment, a pandoras box. That moment kicked off more than a decade worth of geeking out, watching theories, easter eggs, vfx breakdowns, sound design and so much more that made me appreciate the future movies to come even more ❤ thank you

Thank you Jon, Kevin, and everyone who worked on Iron Man for giving me the greatest movie of my childhood. Friendships were made over this movie. I had all the toys. My friends and I would play Iron Man in the yard. Strap up in bike pads and a helmet. So many fond memories. Then growing up with the MCU has been awesome.
Having just gone through a patch of watching all the marvel films in order (1 a week), I can confirm that Iron Man has stood the test of time.

There is something so inspiring about a hero being built not born. I saw the first Iron Man movie when i was 9, i'm 24 and i've been a diehard MCU fan ever since. After i left the theater he instantly became my favorite superhero.

My brother died of cancer a few months before this awesome movie came out. He was the one who bought Marvel comics when we were kids and let me borrow them.
Tony Stark/Iron Man was one of his favorites. He would have absolutely loved this movie.

It's easy to forget how deeply the trope of a secret identity had sunken into our expectations. Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman rely heavily on their dual identities in their storytelling. Stark looking at the audience at the end of an already amazing movie and saying, "I am Iron Man," it was a breath of fresh air. It was Marvel Studios saying, "We're doing things differently."
Everything about Phase 1 was happened on a wing and a prayer - lifted by incredible talent, drive, and vision. Nothing will watch seeing Iron Man in the theater for the first time. Nothing can match seeing Hulk, Thor, Iron Man 2, and Captain America come out with their unique flavors, each one upping the ante on their connectivity. And then nothing can match the anticipation of seeing The Avengers and watching how deftly they pulled it off. None of that was a guarantee, yet looking back it looks like a can't-miss success waiting to happen.
Flash forward to Infinity War and Endgame. The Infinity Saga was complete, and it was one helluva ride.
I've loved Phase 4. It's missing that momentum the first phases had, the connective tissue, the feeling that we're building toward something. The individual pieces have each brought me some form of joy. I'm looking forward to seeing how it might all come together. In the meantime, the MCU is like visiting a giant comic book shop. Collect the books you love. Respect that others might collect a title you're not into. There's something for everyone in there.

Testament of a great movie is timelessness and impact that it has. As an electronics engineering graduate myself i can say that the slew of people of that this movie single handedly inspired from kids, teenagers to adults not just from North America but also from every corner of the world to either pursue or take interest in technology is truly astounding. When an art forces you to think and dream, i believe thats when it becomes timeless for that this movie will always have a special place place in my heart and many like me.
I saw Marvel and DC cartoons back in the 90s/2000s but I was never a huge comicbook fan, I had no idea who Ironman was until a friend from school asked me if I had seen the trailer. Since then I've gone to the first showing of 90% of Marvel movies. What a great franchise to be a fan of

Iron Man set in motion, one of the greatest adventures in movie evolution of all time. Such a masterful plan that is still developing. I found not only Iron Man, but also a great many other Marvel movies, so enjoyable that I will admit to the fact that I watch everything Marvel in chronological order just before the newest one is released.
They should retitle this to “Remember how good the MCU used to be?”

Absolutely legendary - I’ve gone back to watch this movie more times than there are Marvel movies. Iconic.
Ryan Coogler being there while he was in college not knowing he would eventually be a director of his own marvel movie is incredible
The fact that make Favreau the best is he knows what audience, comic book fans want to see. Iron man suit up with those moving part and details make us really happy to see.
I remember when they were in production on the first Iron Man and Jon Favreau was on myspace getting fan opinions and sharing images (particularly Adi Granov stuff) of what they were using for inspiration. I used to read a lot of nerdy websites at the time and heard there was a rumour about the Nick Fury scene and early reviews said there wasn't a secret scene in their screening but that it could be in the full release.
I was sat with my dad (he got me into comics and we've seen all the Marvel films together) telling him we had to wait because I'd heard there was going to be a secret scene. We were the only people left in the screen and the staff were stood near the exit with bin bags ready to clean up just waiting for us to leave and just as I started to think it wasn't happening the screen lit up again. I was so excited that they were already referencing The Avengers. Almost every time we go to an MCU film now and there's groups of people sitting through the credits I turn to him and say "Do you remember when it was just the two of us sitting through the credits of Iron Man in case there was a scene?" It's such a fond memory for me. Love that movie.
There can NEVER be another Iron Man that is not RDJ. RDJ and Favreau saved Marvel, created the MCU, and gave us a lifetime of memories

I watched the first Ironman movie in a small theatre and instantly had a feeling that I never saw anything like it before. I never knew it would be the start of something so massive.
This film is a MASTERPIECE within the MCU.
I'm not a big superhero guy, but I really love both Ironman 1 and 3. Just great action/comedies.
The mcu started and ended with the one simple line from Robert: "I am Iron Man"
Despite truly awesome projects like Wandavision, it actually feels like the MCU died with him. This thing we have now... is just a brand.

This movie is really something special. It's one of my favorite comic book movies of all time, because it's not just a campy super hero movie. It's a film about redemption.
Tony Stark, a man who built a fortune and corporate empire profiting off war. He's got everything, money, women, a mansion, everything a man could want. But when he's captured, trapped in that cave, he realizes all this time, he's had nothing. He realizes the relationships he's made with Pepper, Rhodey, etc, are what really matters.
It's also a redemption for Robert Downey Jr. New fans may not remember, but there was a time RDJ was really in the gutter. In and out of prison and rehab, but this movie really launched him back on his feet and helped him clean himself up.
Considering the constant rewrites, improving, and other interruptions in development, the fact the movie came out this great is astounding.
I can't find a source now, but the talk when "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" came out was that Downey was considered so uninsurable, the studio couldn't find a completion bond company willing to insure them against RDJ being unable to finish filming. IIRC Val Kilmer paid for the bond himself, which is never done.
(But I would like it a lot better if I can actually find documentation on this, I'll admit.)
You have no reason to make it up. I do remember when RDJ was in a bad way. I’ve also seen interviews where people have tried to be slick and bring it up when he’s been promoting movies ambushing. Some people just don’t let you out a period behind a bad time in your life but he showed everybody to never give up in yourself. Where there’s a Will there’s a way.
And honestly I cannot CONCEIVE of any other actor playing Tony Stark. It’s got to be one of the best casting choices ever.
One of my earliest memories was seeing this. I’ve followed Iron Man since I was almost 4 to my last year of middle school.

The erasure of Terrence Howard even from a discussion of this film is half hilarious, half tragic. Even if he was eventually replaced, he WAS Rhodey in 2008.
He was a far better Rhodey too.

@@Jessica_Roth It's not like they cut out Howard to be petty though, he was demanding more money for Iron Man 2 than RDJ lol. On top of that he had a bad temper, himself admitted he's hard to work with, and had clashes with Favreau, so them not mentioning him seems fine by me.
Especially since RDJ was the center of it all anyway, they mentioned Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges only a couple of times too.
Iron Man (2008) is literally always been in my top 5 mcu films and plus it was such a classic
I simply loved this video! What an amazing vision. From what I see, these guys created an empire of storytelling and cinema fun, no matter what other people say. For sure, it will always have ups and downs but, as a fan, we'll definitely appreciate them bringing all these characters together till this day. ❤
Seriously this video truly portrays the saying that something massively large starts with something so small. These 15 years of epic storytelling started with these 2 remarkable visonaries.
I watched the movie in theater when I was little. Really loved the premise and the vibe of it. At the time, I couldn't know how 1 movie will change the cinema dramatically. Pretty sure many kids felt the same after all these years. Iron Man will always have a special place in me. Also big thanks for RDJ. I doubt it would be good without him playing Tony Stark. Born for it.

Forever grateful for the risk they took and putting their faith in RDJ to embody such a major character and to literally launch a studio/universe. 15 years later and Iron Man is still one of the best Marvel movies made to date.

Can we appreciate Kevin Feige for a minute. The man is head of the most profitable film franchises of all time and is constantly working on different projects simultaneously. You'd expect him to be either tired and burnt out, or smoking cigars on a yacht.
But Kevin's not like that. He just seems like a super chill dude who you could hang out with at a barbecue. "Dad's best friend" vibes. A friendly neighbourhood film producer.
Feige has been known as a "walking almanac of all things Marvel" the guy knows these characters and is very passionate about them. He also strikes me as very non-Hollywood.
Being a marvel fan AND a cinema geek, he is literally the happiest guy on earth., helping to bring his favorite characters to life and show people who've either never seen them before or revolve their lives around them, via a medium that he loves with his whole heart. This guy doesn't have a job, he has a living fantasy. The fame, fortune , opportunities to work with cinematic heroes and writing his name in history, are just perks at this point.
For all of us who has been brought so much joy by the MCU, I agree we should appreciate him as much as if our lives depended on it.
ReWatched Iron Man last night. It aged well.
The brilliant minds behind Star Wars and MCU. Jon saved Star Wars, in my opinion. And because of how good Iron Man was, he was the one that kicked off the mcu.
I could listen to these two talk about superhero movies for hours.
