"It looks better than a total CGI fest." Warmed my heart. That one sentence has made me so excited for the future DCU
Thats why his ss was the best looking dceu movie .they made the largest sets instead of cgi everything
Take that, Antman
Yeah he will make the "dark" DC full of comedy lol
@@kyorikusagami84 He'll make DC lively again. Well, until WB get the better off him which I'd hate to see.
@@kyorikusagami84 dc is supposed to be dc, dark is not a keyword for DC. And comedy is a part of life, nothing wrong with it except when used at inappropriate times
James Gunn is a gift to comic fans around the world. He is just as passionate and caring for this material as we are, something a lot of directors/ producers miss
Not a single character he's adapted for the CBMs he's done resemble their sources. Do you even read comics?
@@antona.1327 are you just hiding in the comment section waiting to hate on James Gunn?😂
He sure is
He is okay at best
@@antona.1327He takes what makes them great and enhances it. They still look and feel like the source material, but he puts his own spin on it. He doesn't destroy the core, he makes it flourish. Not to mention that he's adapted character almost nobody cares about and made them popular and beloved. Gunn doesn't miss.
I remember having no expectations watching "Into the Spiderverse". I walked out of the theaters, turned to my friend and said, "I think that might have been one of the best movies I have ever seen." Such a great film. Fingers crossed for the sequel
Same! That was something else for sure. It's a shame that it really wasn't a "hit" but I really liked it.
I watched it two times in a row. Absolutely gorgeous and amazing movie
@@adingdingdiiing6740 you’ll see that the second movie is gonna attain all the success at the box office that the first one should’ve. The hype is huge.
I had a similar experience. I turned to my buddy and said I think this was The best spiderman movie to date
@@TheFlyingV2 no lol
The fact that Oldboy is on his list increased my respect for him tenfold.
And the fact that he didn’t mention the US remake has me respect hook even more😂 it was thanos!!!!
And the fact he mentioned The Raid
"His opinion is similar to my own opinion, therefore I respect him more"
@@sabrina63 not necessarily. It makes us respect him more because it’s not really a safe awnser. A lot of directors would fall into the trap of just picking the classics as “their favorite” because they know it’ll please the crowds
true
i love that james spoke on how much clark actually enjoyed saving people and his small town farm boy goofy charm he had...thats something i love in clark...james defiantely gets it
Something Snyder FORGOT 😤
@@wambokodavid7109 more like something than Snyder DIDN'T CARE
@@eldragonball14 I hear u there
@@eldragonball14you nailed it. The human aspect doesn’t seem to interest him when it comes to superheroes
I hope he is able to capture that and translate it well to the big screen. I really love those guardian movies but Superman is not one of these goofy eccentric characters he is used to putting in these movies and I hope he stays true to that and does not just have him and jimmy Olson screaming at each other for 2 hours.
this guy is gonna make the greatest superman movie ever
Yeah and people are saying that he's gonna destroy Superman and make him goofy. James Gunn looks like he's respecting the character of Superman in the comics, but hopefully he doesn't include the MCU family in that movie because I want to see a fresh new faces in the DCU.
@@mohamedfawzy5843 I guess we can expect a Dave Bautista cameo or something but no main characters
@@ErenTheWarcriminal i hope James casts Jason Momoa as Lobo. He's the perfect fit.
@@mohamedfawzy5843 I hope they do cuz I saw a rumour that Bradley Cooper was offered Lex Luthor. And Dave Bautista as Hugo Strange would go so hard
Can’t wait to come back here after watching too.
The fact that he likes who Clark is in his original form and doesn't like to have everything CGI gives me *big* hope for the Superman Legacy movie
@MR_SAMTHECOOKINGGUY I will slap you
Exactly! Seeing how passionate he is for that film, makes me believe he really wanted the opportunity to make a new refreshing Superman movie.
I respect James Gunn so much cause he respects Animated films and what they bring to the table.
Honestly I've always been one of those people who crapped on em over live action but you know... Then I learned haha.
"Animation is cinema" -Guillermo Del Toro
James Gunn has a vast mind. The Guardians of the Galaxy sure is an amazing franchise.

Its really nice to see james gunn say how great animated movies can be and how occasionally they can be better than love action. Really cool.
Ocassionally?
More like 'always'
@@rjk537 In my view it's more than occasional. I'm just speaking for myself not everyone thats why I said "occasional"

"Peacemaker, What a Joke", that scene is enough to show how incredible James Gunn is...
Seriously. That line was basically the setup for Christopher Smith's change in the Peacemaker show. So well done.
The best thing about James Gunn is that he's a comic book fan, he knows how to make great comic book movies because he makes movies he'd want to see, and thus, movies we'd want to see

Into The Spider-Verse really raised the bar for how comic book movies could be. No doubt Across The Spider-Verse and Beyond The Spider-Verse will brake barries even more.
The movie is mediocre garbage and is hyped up online because of woke zoomer psyop. The numbers tell the actual truth.
Everyone has their opinion I suppose.
@@mrcool1519 Shut up 🤡🎈

It was incredible. That is why i doubt they can make sequels on the same level.
The way he spoke of Donner’s Superman fills me with hope. He seems to “get it” in a way that the Snyder version never did.
Both universes were loved and showed sides of stories that comics book readers crave to see in cinema
I agree. I think he's going to do a great job.
Seeing this reinforced my faith in Gunn. Clarks playfulness as Superman, him really wanting to help people, he fortress of solitude. Also coming off Snyderverse I feel like Superman Legacy is going to make the DCU really explode.
choosing history of violence and oldboy is yet another reason why hes goated. I felt some cronenberg influence in vol 3. Its easily my favorite mcu movie and im excited for superman legacy
Yeah there was definitely some Cronenberg influence with the High Evolutionary's body horror creations. But what I think is even cooler is that he used it to make us feel bad for the creatures rather than just plain disgusted, because they were made to exist like that without any say in the matter
Wearing his Lylla & Rocket & Teefs & Floor shirt. Amazing.

Knowing that Christopher Reeve's Superman is James Gunn's second favorite superhero film of all time gives me such hope for his new Supes movie
The way he described Into the Spider Verse made me love it even more
Spider-Verse being #1 is one of the reasons why James is the freaking GOAT
yessir
So accurate too. Huge props to JG for having no shame in admitting that he’s elevating an animated movie because the story, heart, and execution is all present in it, when I could see pretentious directors sticking to live action cinema
I'm just loving the fact that he worked for Disney/Marvel for over a decade, currently running Warner Bros. new DC cinematic division, and put a SONY movie as his number one. Love it.
I love Into the Spider-Verse, and I’m happy to hear that James Gunn feels the same way! Definitely set a new standard for movies moving forward.
or that's why Lord and Miller are the GOATs 😉
Guardians 2 forever. As a stepdad myself it's a great example of what you're willing to do for your kids, even if they aren't your blood. You would (and in some ways do) give your life for them, because that's real family.
Yondu with a arrow scene alone put gotg2 so high
Underrated movie.
I'm Mary Poppins Y'all
Made me tear up. I was raised mostly by my mom and stepdad and he was a great dad.
The guy who saved the MCU and will save the DC universe.
You can tell Gunn is a student of not only film but comics. He knows this stuff because he lives this stuff and I look forward to his takes on Sups's world.
I didn't even know that Oldboy was a manga aswell till Gunn says it. That's pretty interesting
A History of Violence is a perfect movie. One of Cronenberg's best. Shows that James Gunn knows exactly what he's doing.
Was just thinking that. If you ask the average CBM fan for their Top 5 their probably gonna say NWH and Infinity War and I think it says a lot about why the latter is the one who pays to watch these movies and Gunn the one who gets paid to make them. Completely different eyes, higher standards. Gunn is probably one of the few big commercial filmmakers who, as you said, knows EXACTLY what theyre doing and having a finer taste is a huge element in why he gets to be who and where he is
It sounded a lot like John Wick
@@antonioakpati7441 but its completely different.
@@antonioakpati7441 the general setup of an ex-hitman being dragged back into the life of crime is the same but the way the films approach the concept is entirely different.

Adam Warlock’s flying sequences in GotG 3 are 100 percent James Gunn dipping his toes into Superman. I’m very excited to see what he does with the DC universe!!!!
The fact he gets who Clark/Superman is… makes me smile. He isn’t just big muscles and superpowers. He’s what humanity should look to emulate. And he believes we can attain that.
Road to Perdition, another excellent film in that group of movies not many people realize was based off a comic book.
How james gunn never got to direct a Deadpool baffles me. Hes a perfect fit for the character especially sinces hes great with humour, story and knows how to handle violence in an entertaining way.
He was busy with the guardians movies
Especially what he did with peacemaker and vigilante 😮💨👌🏽straight up dark humor and violence
awesome
@@josegalindo2418 vigilante is goat
He should make a Lobo movie!
These recent press videos James Gunn has been doing really show how appreciative but also confident he is in all facets of comic book films, DC really hit the jackpot in hiring him
absolutely
I didn't know they had hired him. That is a big win for them since they'd been mostly floundering ever since they brought Zach Snyder on board. Since he has an appreciation for animated movies, maybe he will push the DC animated movies more.
Glad James released something personal so we can gain insight on who he is. If James can make the new supermen movie with homage to the original, we’re going to be in for an epic film
yeah
With lots of comedy yeahhh lol

Hearing Gunn praise Donner's Superman gives me so much hope for his Superman movie. I love Donner's Superman so much, and if Gunn's film can capture even an iota of that magic, it'll be amazing.
James Gunn is one of the few directors I fully trust to guide the DCU, especially after gotg vol 3

NO WAY.....
@@Rony-L cry harder Snyder bot
@@outcastriley own that freak
I agree
James Gunn has shown tremendous growth as a storyteller in successive volumes of the GOTG Trilogy, and I can’t wait to see his next venture called Superman: Legacy. ❤🚀
Such a relief to hear Gunn's appreciation for Christopher Reeves' playfulness in the role, after suffering through so many movies with Snyder overlaying Ayn Rand's pessimistic shite philosophy onto Superman's ethos.
Hearing him talk about Superman 78 gave me so much hope for Superman legacy
You can tell this guy is a huge fan of Asian Cinema. Love that he has oldboy on here and he mentions the raid
Two of my personal favorites are "The Rocketeer" and "Scott Pilgrim Vs The World"!
I’m interested in the Scott Pilgrim anime that’s being made. The cast of the film is coming back to voice their respective roles. I enjoyed the film, but the second half pales in comparison to the comics (which hadn’t been written yet at the time of production), so I’d love to see a more faithful adaptation.
The Rocketeer is a favourite for a lot of people who grew up during the 80s/90s. Really nice movie.
5 years on, spider verse is still my favourite movie. It's absolutely incredible.
Same and What’s your Opinion on SpiderMan Across the Spiderverse for me I Loved it Along with first one.
The fact that dark knight/ mask of the phantasm isn't on this scares me.
The fact that he said Margot Kidder as Lois Lane was practically the heart of the Superman movie makes me feel no worries about the direction of the DC Universe with James Gunn at the helm .
Kidders Lois Lane had that sense of wonder a person should have when first speaking with Superman .
Lois needs the sass
Margot Kidder and Dana Delany (DCAU Lois) are my favorite depictions of her
He’s a brilliant filmmaker, it’s really neat to see his career flourishing and he’s going to fix the DC comic movie universe. I’m excited to see what he does.
I actually wish he was going to fix it. Seems more like he's just rebooting.

Gunn chose really cool movies, and explained his choices well! It can't be forgotten what a huge impact the Donner Superman film had on a whole generation. Christopher Reeve was an iconic figure, and wow, that score! Still gives me goosebumps.
If only James Gunn knew how deeply he'll be missed at the MCU.
im sure he does, but money talks
DC is so lucky to have Gunn. The DCU will be amazing!
I think a Blade needs a honorable mention. It in some way started this new age of super hero movies.
I absolutely love that he's a comic nerd and has a deep love for these character's I have faith that he'll fix the dc cinematic universe after what snyder did damaging the brand
The way he talked about the optimism and hope of Superman puts me at ease for legacy
Superman is one of my favorite superhero films because it proves that not every superhero movie needs to have an epic battle to end the story. In fact the ending is so full of life and it felt grounded because it felt real with accidents during an earthquake. And not to mention how brilliant Christopher was as a charming, strong, full of life, caring, person who believes in kindness that isn’t givin back by most. I love that film.
i hope superman legacy honors that film in a way
Nice to see him showing some love to Homecoming at the end 🤌
James Gunn has become one of my favorite creative minds in film. I can’t wait to see what he does in the future.
I feel like the hallway fight in Oldboy was the inspiration for the hallway fight in Sifu, with the same colors and shots of the hallway.
It’s also the inspiration for daredevil hallway scene
I just watched A History of Violence a few days ago. Still an awesome movie.
Why we need directors like him to do comic book movies… he gets it! Excited what he’s cooking up over DC.
Having Oldboy on this list makes me SO happy. It's an incredible film.
Great list! James is an amazing creator and it's so nice to see him talk about comics in general.
James Gunnn is better bro.
GQ thanks for giving us insight into the thinking and creative processes of one of the most influential figures in the present and future of comic book cinema! Given his emphasis on both HBO MAX animation (CREATURE COMMANDOS (2024) animated series) and upcoming live action films for initial theatrical release (SUPERMAN LEGACY (2025), etc), his words here will no doubt be scrutinized and analyzed heavily! ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ being his favorite comic book/superhero film is f*cking awesome 😎
I agree 100% with this list. And I would put Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 as number 2.. that was just FANTASTIC. Great list
Im so astounded to see A History of Violence mentioned here. I always thought that was niche and no one really knew of it. Of course, i was a lot younger when i watched it so i didnt even know one bit of the history behind its existence.

James Gunn is a Genius!!! I am really looking forward to watching what he is going to do with the DC Universe!!! Can't wait for Superman: Legacy⚡😎
James is just unabashedly roasting recent Marvel movies like Endgame and Quantumanium with his comment about multiverses.
All of Guardians 3 itself is an entire roast of Disney, with the High Evolutionsru just being a representation of Walt and the larger Disney Corp.
