Same!! I think it really helped that they established his loneliness when he was people watching in the van, and I think he focused on the kissing couple. Shit hit hard. I hope we get a sequel where they're all living happy lives and stuff, or an epilogue.
I found it interesting how emotive Polkadot man got at Milton's death, and how everyone else either didn't know who he was or didn't realise he was with them, even though Polkadot man should LITERALLY have the hardest remembering and recognising people. Goes to show how much he cared
Another thing that adds to Peacemaker’s character is that you can tell he doesn’t want to kill Rick Flag or Ratcatcher. That inner conflict adds a lot to his character, since he cherishes peace, but he’s also grown to cherish his teammates
@@rivers3673 still tho, he hesitated a bit, which shows tht he didn't want to. Unlike when he was attacking the refugee camp, dude had no second thoughts
I agree. And its one of the many nuances that I really appreciated about how this movie treated its characters and their individual arcs. Everyone develops as the story moves along….except Harley, but shes psychotic so all is well. Lol.
I went into the cinema with zero expectations. I came out caring very sincerely about a guy committed to peace no matter the cost, a guy raised to be a weapon his whole life, a girl who can control rats, a man covered in explosive polka dots, a shark man thing who can barely string a sentence together, a soldier who had to keep his eye on this merry band of misfits and a gigantic alien starfish who missed his home in space.
No Gunn wil have ever y HIGH expectation placed on him for Superman. There's no goofy or quirky characters. There's no misfits, other than Lobo who is a villain of Superman / Lantern Corps. He can do goofy sh*t , but can he do classic heroes? Particularly after the divisive handling of Henry Cavill.

@@chaoticgoodcreations947 if you are talking about polkadot, and not milton, i believe it was, since the movie started i knew only two of them could actually hurt starro, polkadot and ratcatcher, they killed him so ratcatcher could finished the job, not only in a way that was epic, as he would do, but also gross, which fits the movie perfectly, specially because like taika said, rats are despised by everyone but they also noble
Harley specifically said to watch out for red flags and that killing children is a huge red flag, Peacemaker literally said kill children for peace and that should've hinted about his betrayal early on.
What makes that even better is that Harley Quinn wasn't even around to hear him when he said that so there is no contradiction in character while still giving us, the audience the hint.
James Gunn is really genuis, he make people sympathize about the raccoon, the tree, the girl who control the rat, the shark and the guy who throw polka dot at people.
That is why he is perfect to run the next wave of DC movies. The heroes in the DCEU were very hard to sympathize with and relate to. Characters most of us grew up watching in cartoons who were relatable and grounded despite their superhuman ability's. I think that was the main reason the DCEU failed where as the MCU worked so well. Stunning visuals does not make up for unrelatable characterizations of heroes we all love.
That line right there gives starro more depth. Bc he just wanted to be left alone until humans discovered him and then keep him locked up in a secret bunker.
And I am still feeling bad about 2016 Squad. It could be a good movie with cool dark, but still bright style with blood, dark humor and badass characters. But something went wrong and we got Joker who was fixed only with Snyder's help, enough characters we don't actually care, okay jokes, but could be better and boring villian with boring motivation. But in 2021 film, James had too much control, because sometimes gory stuff made me bored and petty much childish jokes. But the second part of movie was just perfect.
How does one save a comic franchise when it bombed at the box office and the first "garbage" one made more money which is David Zaslav's goal? Legendary is ENDGAME. Legendary is the DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY. Gunn is already 0-1 after Henry Cavill was fired. We shall see. I laughed when I too realized too late Milton was still with them trying to help out. It happened so naturally and when the film pointed out he’s dead I too reacted like Bloodsport like “yo wtf was he still doing here”
Right? Like he completely faded into the back of my mind. They played a damn good trick with that sudden death, made all the better by everyone except Polka Dot Man freaking out about his death.
I honestly have no idea how James Gunn managed to juggle and fit character development through so many multiple different characters at once on such a short movie, it's amazing. I guess his experience with the MCU helped quite a bit.
Milton had the best character arc. He started as a scared and fidgety bus driver and over the movie bonded with the squad and helped them on every mission. His confidence sky rocked and he seemed so happy to be helping plant the bombs. Then he died.
@@josho7138In the show White Dragon is his father, a white supremacist supervillain who raises both Peacemaker and his brothers to be aryan death machines and makes them constantly fight each other. After Peacemaker accidentally kills his brother in one such a fight, his father also develops a deep hatred and abusive behavior towards him. This makes Peacemaker reevalue his father's ideology, choosing to fight for peace instead. But he keeps the same methods and the same disregard for human life because he actually knows no better. Exactly as Rick Flagg said: "Peacemaker, what a joke." He's not a peace-loving man with some questionable methods, he's a deeply violent, abusive man, who chose "peace" as an excuse so that he can feel good about himself.
What I noticed about The Suicide Squad more than anything else was actually its pure _wholesomeness._ For what is arguably one of the most gruesome, violent, pointlessly deadly movies ever, the characters of King Shark, Ratcatcher and Bloodsport all had me legitimately feeling the warm fuzzies when they interacted positively with eachother, especially the scenes where King Shark and Ratcatcher show off their friendship, and any scene involving Sebastian the rat (who is second in line for my favorite character after King Shark).
Also, even being violent and having pretty dark jokes, the amount of good lessons it has i never seen in a comics movie before, they talk about friendship (nanaue and ratcatcher) , family (bloodsport), about how you can do wonderful things even if you think you're trash (polkadot and ratcatcher) , how we can live peacefully with the nature (starro), romantic relationships (Harley, despite the killing part), empathy and giving up on morals to do the right thing (Flag and Peacemaker), and the list goes on
"I carry friend" such a small line yet hits differently after seeing that he almost ate her the day before showing that he really values the friendship that napcatcher extends to him
One of the things I don't think people are talking enough about is just how damn *good* Cena's acting was in this. When he kills Rick Flagg, you can _see_ that he's hurting, and _feel_ that he knows that this simply isn't right. That's not something you often get in movies like these, so it's fantastic to see him bring a more nuanced take to this... and I now cannot *wait* for his new HBO Max show.
He gives a little lip quiver when he is about to kill RatCatcher and she is begging him not to. He isn't completely heartless. He actually has a moral center, to him at least, even if it is fucked up and completely misguided.
Every time I think of the "Batman beating Deashot in front of his daughter" scene from the original, I can't help but think it would have been much more in character for Batman to be stalking them, from a position where only Deadshot can spot him. It may ruin the ambush, but I think it fits him much more to wait until the kid is out of the picture and give a father the chance to say goodbye to his daughter.
Yeah it was stupid, all because Will smith wanted a sympathetic character, but i think bloodsport did a much better job and you actually wanted things to work out with him and his daughter
@@Griot-Guild I absolutely adore that they actually subverted the typical "villain that happens to be a good and loving dad" thing. You can tell he didn't want to be a father and isn't ready, but the care and potential to be a good dad is there. It ties wonderfully into how Bloodsport develops and coming off as heroic to his daughter in the end feels much more rewarding. God, this movie did so much right. It's no a masterpiece or a movie that changes cinema as a whole. But it makes you leave the cinema with a smile and saying "that was such a good fucking movie".
There is a scene specifically in BTAS where he is about to attack a criminal in an alleyway, but then sees the criminal’s son and it causes him to pause and think of himself as a boy in that alleyway. He chooses to wait until the criminal is alone again. Though I suppose it’s more in line with Snyder’s BatPunisher to just not give a shit.
I thought Harley's portrayal in the film was pretty accurate - in her own crazy way, she strikes a balance between her intentions and her emotions which is reflected in how she fights and when she chooses to fight back. She acted impulsively at first - but after killing the dictator and being tortured for a while, she killed everyone using her skills which she clearly has been honing well - in terms of combat experience, she's up there with Flag and Peacemaker. She can strategise but she can also improvise- the wild card element works very well for Harley. Besides that, this movie was a really good story in itself, despite many characters dying early on - the movie made us care about the characters it simultaneously introduced and Flag's death hit hard, not to mention how devastating it was to lose Polka Dot Man. Plus, yeah, Ratcatcher 2 had the best backstory and her friendship with Bloodsport was simply natural and wholesome.
The sense of actual danger was what made it a good suicide squad movie. When they killed the first team you knew it was going to get real, and they weren't scared of killing characters we actually like and know later on.
@@Tom_Cruise_Missile to add on to your point, I felt that after a while you get comfortable and start thinking no one will die/ no one more will die, only to be corrected in a relatively crushing way. Are they confirmed as the distraction team? I dont see why Waller would put Flag, Quinn etc up for death. It also wouldnt make sense that she was angry that they were sold out, i think they were meant to meet up at some point but obviously couldnt. Seems like a waste of power.

@@walloper9972 Well, it wasnt really a waste or power. Harley is just a person, not a super human, same with rick, same with boomer. On top of that, if we assume the last movie happened, they also were proven to be people that actively worked against the main plan, were unreliable. If the last movie didnt happen, than harley is a smart, but loose cannon, boomer doesnt offer much, and rick while a talented soldier, is still just a regular highly trained soldier, of which the military likely has plenty of, but still a leader and someone needed to lead an assualt. Nobody in group A really offered much in terms of power. Group B however contained two people that were extra ordinary in terms of their lethality, but also very mission orientated people, with bloodsport having a unique and powerful arsenal to boot, and peacemaker being the one person waller knew would adhear to the mission, because they could frame the peace side of it. Thats his unique power that set him apart from bloodsport in the beginning when he said they are the same. They werent, Peacemaker would be utterly undetered by any factor to finishing his specific task, destroying evidence. The only thing I would argue with this video about is the impact of Amanda Waller. I found her character quite compelling in the 2021 remake. While she started calm and in control, she became more extreme and more intense as time went on and the stakes rose. I enjoyed watching that progress. I think it was crucial for keeping the tension high throughout the movie
She's in the movie because she's supposed to show that she's just as much of a psychopath as these villains are, and how people running the government or jails can be just as twisted as those they preside over on the other side of the bars.
@@stevenborg102 Yeah and so 'not showing her motivations' has a purpose, it makes her choice in the end (for the team to not get involved in the rescue mission) even more absurd and pitiful.
It did a great job of making her fucked up. Easy answer, the editors didn’t fuck over the film, the director actually cared, and the actors really enjoy their characters. All that needs to be said
@Cristo Alba well thats why I said the editors fucked him over as well but at the same time the movie even if re edited maybe could have been alright but their story regardless was all over the place
I watched this movie on a plane thinking it was the original and being extremely confused when I heard everyone disliked it and even more so when they were upset with Jared leto’s role until the very end of the movie when I realized that I was watching a different movie entirely
also peacemakers helmet is this beaken of light that you would expect of a superhero, but when peacemaker betrays them, his helmet is knocked of, revealing who he really is. a "the ends justify the means" kinda person
There's also the reveal of his true role in the team. Remember how Bloodsport was baffled at Waller's weird inconsistency of varied team skills when describing Peacemaker's identical background and skillset to him? Peacemaker was never a member of the team; he was the enforcer put in to ensure Waller's bidding was done no matter what. It never mattered what skills he brought to the team's success; only what skills he had in case he needed to eliminate members of the team.
Also, Peacemaker has no shympathy towards the team whenever the other team members told their sad backstories while Bloodsports feel sorry for them. Really shows his true character is from the beginning. He's just a total hypocrite selfish douchebag who doesn't care of the others and only wants to do it himself.
Hes clearly not underrated in directors eyes cuz hes been cast in small roles in 2 nolan movies and 3 villeneuve movies. He was also in ant man 1 and 2 and now this.
I think another small detail that makes this movie so good is that when the team considers getting rid of King Shark, Waller tells them that he is the strongest member of the team, when in reality the strongest member is obviously Polka-Dot Man. Remember, King Shark has bulletproof skin. This means they had no way of putting that bomb in his neck. In the comics, this was solved with a belt that was meant to do the same however it failed. By telling the team that King Shark is necessary and they shouldn't ditch him, Waller was making sure they didn't anger the only team member they had no plan for stopping. Luckily, King Shark is an idiot who didn't know that not everyone liked him on the team so he never decided to get angry except for the time when Bloodsport shot at him. This detail really made me realize Waller is a genius and not just the mean lady telling the protagonists what to do.
I love how people come up with ways to contain characters that can’t be contained in standard ways. Like, you could have a boring “here is a way to completely deactivate whatever makes them hard to contain in the first place” but you could have the “we designed something specific to this uncontainable character.” With the SCP universe, you get a mix of both. It’s always more interesting to actually problem solve than use writer divine will.
I dont know, i think nanaue is the strongest member, he got eaten by alien Jellyfish, which nobody else in the movie would survive, then a enormous building crashed on him, an entire army shot at him, and he got yeeted in a skyscraper by a gigant starfish. And he walks away like it was nothing. I dont think polka would even scratch him. Also polka is dead, nanaue not. Ratcatcher 2 is maybe on his power level. I dont care about my grammar you see the point.
@@gnumpf1248 nanaue is strong but he has the benefit of high durability and bulletproof skin, not dissimilar to starro's durability (resistant to bloodshots arsenal). polka dot man's pure destructive power is crazy, that incendiary-like attack ate through starro's leg. it would do a lot worse to nanaue.
The attention to detail sprinkled throughout The Suicide Squad is amazing. For example, Savant is in prison due to Black Canary arresting him so the opening scene where he kills a canary is symbolic to his hatred and wanting for vengeance. Then when he eventually dies as his remains drift along the water, a canary can be seen eating his brains (again symbolic of his inevitable failure as a d-list villain). Just 👌🏾👌🏾
@@epicgamerhank9509 As a big fan of Gail Simone’s Birds of Prey run I was really hoping we’d see Savant do more cool stuff in this movie, but I’d be lying if I said his death wasn’t hilarious
That scene works in two ways actually, as a metaphor for his hatred of Black Canary and as another metaphor for his desire of freedom, after all Birds are always related to freedom, and him killing it express both his desire and why he is incarcerated. Another canary eating his remains is just an expression of his vicious cycle of encarceration for his actions.
I thought Harley Quinn's escape showed off that her "normal" behaviour was mostly just an act and that she is actually super clever (like we all know she is). In my eyes they somewhat did the correct "Jack Sparrow thing" with her in this one.
@@nomnommoon1001 In the animated show it's like she has a split-personality, and while she mostly does random shit, when she does listen to her psychologist side, she does some pretty well planned stuff. Her gymnastics abilities are shown pretty much everywhere so it's not something that isn't apparent.
@@nomnommoon1001 Thing is that, even if she's actually insane, she's still quite inteligent and has had many moments in the comics where she actually plans or shows that she can be normal.
i think it should be noted that deadshot doesnt neccessarily want to separate from his daughter because he's a lone wolf type, but more on because he doesn't want his daughter to associate with someone like him. this is shown in how he tries to actively push away his daughter by making it seem like he didnt care about her being a criminal (or, at least, attempting to be one), just that she got caught. he wants her to see him as a horrible person because he thinks that of himself and believes himself to not be worth his daughter, AND he shows that he *does* care for her when he tried to kill amanda waller when she threatened his daughter.
I think it’s pretty clear Harley plays dumb. You can see where she shows her true brilliance. Even for a split second where she yells “No!” to Abner when he’s about to shoot his polka dots because she knew he’d hit the bombs.
Also in the torture scene, even through all of the pain she was receiving, She was still calculating enough to be able to make a plan to escape and carry out that plan
When Ratcatcher 2 was first introduced, I was like “Who? What does she do, control rats? At least I know the actors who play these other characters I’ve never heard of.” and by the end I was like “If Cleo dies I will riot in the streets. She is my favorite superhero.”
I was scared when Peacemaker wanted to kill her but luckily, she got saved by Bloodsport. Never thought in my life, I would ever shympathize by a girl who can control rats, a guy who can shot Polkadot and a hybrid Shark Man.
Im more of a marvel person, so i dont know a lot of characters on DC, but like shang-chi i absolutely have no clue who they are but i just watch the movie anyway, and i love seeing new likeable characters like Rat catcher 2, king shark, blood sport and pokedotman
Yea that’s what movies used to be like, you get introduced to a character and then throughout the movie you come to understand and care for them. Now you just clap when you see your favourite celebrity on screen.
The build up of pokadot man’s mom up to his death scene where he imagines staro as his mum and “it’s your mom!!!!”. Is one of the best things in this film
That ironic contrast you were talking about in peacemaker, it seemed similar to the reversal method you talked about in ' into the spider verse ' where (for example) kingpin is memorable because he is huge but actually a sad little man on the inside
The "ironic contrast" is often used in Comics. The original X-men are good examples. Iceman is hot-blooded. Nightcrawler is a devout christian. The beast is really smart, and so on...

The opening scene on the beach really SHOCKED ME. It's so intense, and urgent, and all of a sudden, hell breaks lose and I wasn't ready for it. Gunn's direction is amazing, here.
it really gives you everything; the premise, the stakes, how lowly waller / the institution thinks of the squad, WHY its a *suicide* squad... its so snappy, zero bs exposition about "superman storming the pentagon", brilliant!
Gotta say that I agree that amanda waller isn't funny or even entertaining but she is more of that character you love to hate, which is why her getting clubbed in the head is such a great moment. She's more like an antagonist than a supporting side character.
She wasn't supposed to be funny. She's the exact same character from Suicide Squad 2016 but transferred into this sillier, care free movie. It is great.
@@Dan-ri9hw sorry I was referring to something filmento said. I was saying that she is an antagonist. I did watch both movies otherwise I wouldn't be here
The sad truth is James Gunn is not necessarily a "visionary genius He's literally just a guy who actually read the comic books as a kid or teen - & then grew up to find a voice in cinema, so added layers of horror, comedy and legit pathos, without disrespecting the original source material I the process. This is why he chose the Suicide Squad over Superman. He'd have the freedom to define these characters, which as a comics reader - he Knows have only been loosely defined on the page.
He respect the source material and knows what the audience want, so he's good in my books. If you wanna see an original idea by him, check out his directorial debut with 2006's Slither. It's batshit insane.
I was aware Milton was with the group since the beginning of the final assault, and I was like 'huh he is gonna survive this as a joke for sure', but then he died and that was the biggest gut punch on this movie for me right after Polka Dot Man's death
It was obvious he was with them because he was in the slow motion line shot when they approached the building. It was then that I asked: "why is he with them?" Afterwards, I thought he would just be a guy trying to help but doing nothing since he is a regular guy. Bloodsport is acting like the audience because us, he audience, never see Milton or have him mentioned again until his death. Clearly the others should have known he was with them the entire time because it was only the four of them.
I honestly loved the opening beach sequence because it showed that 1.) These are dangerous you're practically committing suicide by going in these missions and 2.) That these characters are in a sense disposable, their lives are meaningless and their deaths means one less villain for Amanda to worry about.
It does and doesn't. If anything it highlights the issue of there being 3 people you KNOW are going to make it to the end. Bloodsport, because he is the protagonist they put the most effort into characterising. Harley, because lol they are not killing off their most recognisable name. King Shark, because they want him to sell merch as the "cutesy animal like ally" similar to Groot from Guardians. Throughout the movie I knew those were pretty much safe so it just made me think "Okay so when are they gonna kill off Polka Dot Man or Flag?" I still enjoyed this movie a hell of a lot more but I really wished they didn't just throw Harley in as an additional "name recognition" character since there was no way they'd kill her off because of her popularity.
@@caldw615 they put the same effort characterising Savant, Bloodsport could totaly have died fighting Starro because Ratcatcher was the stronger character there, he could die saving her life, and King Shark didn't die because he is the fucking King shark, the only character in the team that could fight Superman you are right about Harlen but her plot armor is normal in every media, because that is one of the traits of the character, she is always more competent than anyone give her credit
@@devforfun5618 I highly doubt they'd go to the effort of characterising the only non-white member of their team only to kill him off in the final act (King Shark is Polynesian but played by a white actor so he doesn't even cover that either). Movie King Shark is not anywhere close to Superman's level in this movie considering his feats, he's been injured by things that wouldn't even scratch Supes, he also didn't do a lot to Starro where as Superman is more than strong enough to toss him into space if he wanted to. The only reason he survived is because he is this movies Groot for selling merch, if you look into even just Funko Pop sales (those shitty cheap looking figures) his has already sold out in most places both for the smaller and larger one while the price is jacked up. People love their CGI cute characters that act like animals or toddlers (Groot, Baby Yoda etc) Harley's plot armour is based on luck, not competancy. She's not "smarter than she appears" in this version like she does in the animated series or Arkham games, she's genuinely a ditz who sees the world all warped and only gets by because of luck with her delussions and the people around her helping at the right moments.
@@caldw615 I don't completly agree with your description of Harley. Her prison escape was 100% skill.... Plus a surprise factor. But yeah she is ditzier in this version than in other interpretations.
The point about Irony is really good. I think that the way a characters appearance and first impression match up with how they actually act and think makes or breaks them. And the irony of almost all of them managed to accomplish it really well, like with Polka-Dot Man, he’s wearing polka dots and has this brightly colored power, but his main personality revolves around his almost depressive aura and trauma.
Tbh the original one’s marketing was on another level and also this movie was for the streaming service as opposed to something making money at theatres.
I would like to see an alternate version where the story is told as if Polka Dot was the main character, thus every other character appeared to be his mom while he is present throughout the film. Funniest parts for me.
While I agree with the spirit of your comment, I'm not sure Oedipus complex is the correct term. Isn't that being sexually attracted to a parent? PDM was angry and hated his mother, not love in anyway that I understood.

14:08 I think Amanda Waller is too minor of a character to worry about being boring or not. I think she functions in the film just fine as a threat/obstacle, and I might go so far as to compliment her performance showing how cold and detached she is while talking to or about the Suicide Squad, since she only sees them as disposable tools.
I agree. Aside from being a cruel and brutal commander, she really doesn’t have much to offer. Her vicious ability to make choices IS her power but once removed of that position, she’s same as you and me.
its exactly BC she's so firm in her functional cruelness that makes her interesting imo. i dont want her to change or have an evolution like any of the squaders bc her intensity is the whole point, and its chilling to see. if she does evolve, I'd rather her find a new unique way to double down on her methods. whats the fun in a character like her changing into someone sympathetic, rather than leaning into the fact that she clearly has seen enough and experienced enough to always justify her actions. shes fucking incredible as a villain
Exactly, in the comics her whole character is being a relentless, effective, and brutal tool of the US government. That’s shown well in this movie and Viola Davis’s acting was really good
@@MystiqMiu Exactly, if she wasn't so firm and backed down even a little before I wouldn't be biting my nails on the edge of my seat thinking that she was gonna wake up after getting hit on the head and blow bloodsport's head. I was so fucking scared I was screaming at the screen "Close the box! Deactivate it! Tie her up!" just thinking about it now I can still feel the anxiety.
Well, the answer is actually quite simple: WB really intervened with the "David Ayer" Suicide Squad, and heavily altered the movie. When James Gunn got kicked out at Marvel, however, DC and WB greeted him with open arms, and they gave him complete creative freedom to do whatever the hell James Gunn wanted.
While the editing of the original movie was nearly war crime level bad, and should be given whatever the reverse of an Oscar is as far and away one of the most egregious bad movies I've ever seen--You need to understand that fundamentally it was also full of bad ideas. I'm sure like the movie Bright, it had a chance to be something really good really special and start a new generation of movies. But also like Bright, I am 100% sure that no one involved was going to let that happen. From music choices, to the editing, to the casting, to the writing and directing the costuming everything, it is an underwhelming movie and while I'm sure it was at one point a slightly better one, you can't give it too much credit.
@@Levyathyn I can understand that. I heard it's the same situation with that atrocious Fan4stic movie that was such an abomination that the director came out and said that the movie that came wasn't HIS VERSION, and THAT WAS A DAY BEFORE THE FILM CAME OUT!!! I guess at the end of the day, it's very much like a "pick your poison" kind of situation, and some people just don't want the poison.
I actually just appreciated that Harley quinn wasn't as sexualized She's still badass Still dresses feminine But she doesn't look like a blatant sex symbol
@@roa3432 I think they're also starting to display some of her better personality Not all of it of course Some people still liked that first suicide squad Harley
Also, her red and black costume is a nod to her original version in Batman: The Animated Series and Arkham City games. I personally like this costume than her "Daddy's Little Monster" costume all the way. In 2016 SS, we saw a glimpse of her original costume when she got it on airport but didn't want to wear it and on flashback when she danced with the Joker.
Waller is always interesting, in fact the first movie nailed why she's so terrifying: she can sit down with Bruce Wayne over dinner and NOT be intimidated by the fact she knows he's Batman and doesn't give a fuck about the fact he knows what she's planning. She's more interested in knowing what he's doing because its her job to be. She's not a femme fatale, she has no super powers or special martial arts skills, she's just really that good at her job at being a heartless bitch that gets things done by doing whatever it takes to win.
Plus she even respects her co workers for doing it in a weird way lol, as she said Bloodsport was born to lead. Kinda goes full circle in a strange mad way.
Waller is screwed in that scene because she literally CAN'T back down. If she does, she can never lead Squad X again. Criminals will test her and lose respect. A lot of people see her cursing and screaming as a loss of control. It is in a way. Not a loss of control over the Suicide Squad (she is definitely going to kill them all). It's a loss of control over the situation. That screaming is at herself. It's why she doesn't end up murdering her people. They actually did her a huge favor.
Lol Harley is not dumb she just knows how to use people's prejudice against them. Them thinking she's a giggly dumb blonde makes it very convenient for her to handle them. She also a supremely self confident character and knows what she likes and what she doesn't and goes out and gets it. One of the best Harley Quinn representations here.
It took me thirty minutes to get over Boomerang's death and get back into the movie. He was the single saving grace of the first movie only to be eviscerated in the second 😭😭
@@hz.kemalpasa2997 sure he was wasted but even then, he was STILL the best part of that movie. I dare say even better than Viola Davis as Ananda Waller
@@jayymorris5285 Could be right. I was amazed at how they could ruin such potential with making him throw a single boomerang and do nothing for the rest of the movie. He could be so much better.
Literally him drinking a pop and hiding a pink unicorn was more interesting than the entire climax of the first movie lol, imo all the second movie did was make every character as interesting as boomerang
Spoilers: Well, I think the most interesting part about the Suicide Squad concept is that everyone (except for Harley) can die. This made almost no difference in the first movie but in this they use it immediately to great effect and don't shy away later either. Also they played up this "we're the bad guys" in the first one without anyone really being that bad. In this they really do bad things (although due to false information) and Harley as a Psycho Killer really shines, so even that aspect worked (much better). And finally, the concept allows to put basically every character from DCs backlog into one movie without having to establish a connection and stuff. They go much more creative in this one than in the first.
As over the top as Polka Dot Man might seem as a concept, it's a good illustration of what deep trauma can do to people. Your whole perception of the world is affected through no fault of your own. It's not just "bad memories", everything is seen through trauma lens.
Shame he died at the end. Like CMON he was finally coming out of his zone yet Starro killed him… DAMN YOUU YA BLOODY FISH BASTICH… Ya killed off a great character like how the military killed off Boomer. Such a waste of great characters
Do you know if she did ALL of those things shown in the movie or if it was just a special effect? I was so impressed by her performance that I barely noticed the "Yo mama" joke.
@@bbittercoffee It reminds me a lot of Deep Roy's performance in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" as... every oompa loompa. In that case I think they took the actor's performances and used digital compositing to effectively multiply them. In this movie there were definitely some effects done to some of the composites, like the King Shark mom, but I would expect them to have all been performed by Lynne Ashe.
I really like Harley's portrayal here--but I'm a big fan of her stand-along comic series, which is what Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad seem to be pulling from. She's not an idiot--she just finds it more convenient for people to think she is. At the same time, she's impulsive and works from an emotional center (hence shooting Luna when she saw his "red flags"). I love Rat Catcher 2, and I genuinely hope we see her character again, and I was surprised how attached I got to both Polka Dot Man and Nanaue by the end. I was really rooting for Polka Dot Man, his sudden death hurt a lot.
His take on Harley was way off. I don't know why he has such a problem with her being a badass, I thought Harley Quinn was supposed to be good at killing people and thrives in chaos. So no she doesn't do what the tactical, precision assassin Bloodsport or Peacemaker does. In wrestling we called it "creating a scramble", it's where you use weird moves or whatever, and you put both you in your opponent in a bad position, and then have to rely on athleticism and willpower over skill to get the advantageous position. Basically if shit goes side ways, she is there to turn it sideways on the enemy too.
@@nicholasmaniccia1005 She may be an agent of chaos, I won't deny it, but she can be quite intelligent about it, when she wants. Let's remember than in BTAS (or was it TNBAS? Now that I think about Batman's looks in that chapter, it was probably TNBAS) it was her who got closer to kill Bruce than the Joker. She even got in the plan the joke that Joker would have tried to put. Well, it wasn't a great joke, but she put it there, too. Or in Batman and Harley Quinn movie, not only she beats Nightwing in a one on one (Nightwing can give Bats a run for his money in a fight), but she also helps Batman and Nightwing discover the baddies plan, and later she "beats" Poison Ivy by "hitting" her "weakness" (so to speak everything I put into quotes), and gives Batman and Nightwing the solution common sense should have given them to beat Floronic Man. Now, I haven't seen this movie, so I don't know if she does this kind of things here (being intelligent about behaving like a loon) or not, I'm just saying that she is more than "being good at killing people and thriving in chaos"
@@lenlimbo I never said that's all she was, if you want to add something just do it. Instead of acting like a smug "ackshully" dork, thinking you are correcting things about a fictional character in a movie you didn't see. Unless stated most representation of comic book characters are slightly different from writer to writer so all your sources don't matter for shit unless the same guy wrote them and said the are the exact same rendition.
I have a different view of Harley Quinn, I see as being somewhat Jack Sparrow-esque, she's crazy but still somewhat still knows what she's doing. Especially, during her escape scene
But to really look into it, do you think the writers buffed harley too hard? I like her but she went full john wick in that movie, not to mention she got tased for like 5,6 times and still sober.
In the comics at least, most of Amanda Waller's character charisma rellies on the being the woman that made Batman back down. Even if they hate her, she gained the respect of the Squad out of being the only person to stand up to Batman, and make him back down.
Harley is a very go-with-the-flow person who typically isn't invested in the Squad unless she makes friends with them first. That's why she opted to marry Prince Luna and start a new life.
I thought she was just in the movie because the actress who plays her genuinely likes the character. Harley's character really slows down the movie in portions, I'm not sure why she's even in the movie tbh.
@@remowhat3879 Because: 1. Harley is one of the staple member of the Squad in the comics at this point. 2. Harley is popular and DC loves to use her for marketing purposes.
@@Magnet_Chaos 1) that's true of every comic book adaption. Comics will move characters around to resemble what's going on in theaters for new comic readers. 2) just because you can drop a popular character into a movie, doesn't mean you should. Like I said, Harley slows down the story where we could have learned more about the rest of the team.
@@remowhat3879 You are not getting it. She is there because DC mandates that she is there. To promote the comic and because they think she is popular enough that her being in the movie will sell tickets. Which in turns will sell more comics. Amanda Waller may be a minor character in this, but I got some major chills when she yelled at everyone to stand down. That lady can deliver some ferocity!
Yeah, except Amanda Waller doesn't lose her crap and shout at you. She tells you what to do, and if you don't, she pops your head. She doesn't throw a tantrum and rely on a minion to do it. She just handles the business. That scene was trash.
i love her staff more in first film, she even killed her own staff and noone goes against her order its really made me upset finally someone smack her head

What do u mean exactly ? Jus askin not trying to be funny….u mean like some confirmation of understanding when he smirked while listening to Bloodsports story about his childhood
@@Culley91 it makes sense, Peacemaker talks about how his father pushed him to be a killer since he was a kid. I wouldn't be surprised if Peacemaker's father was just as much of an asshole as Bloodsport's.
@@remowhat3879 for sure... but I interpreted a little arrogance in the smirk as well. Like, "oh, I went through that and I turned out fine... you went through that and look, you're whining about it on a bus!" They both had abusive childhoods but Peacemaker is still in denial about some parts of his. He thinks his dad was justified. Whereas Bloodsport has matured & realized what his dad did was wrong, and that he would never treat another person (let alone a child) that way.
"People Who Died" playing over the opening credits did more for me than the entire soundtrack of the first movie, even though it was just as heavy-handed.
My big issue with the first movie was towards the end when the fire dude (Diablo?) cries out about the rest of the squad being family. And I was like.. what? They'd known each other like 3 hours and this villainous gangster lord was willing to die for a bunch of randoms? It epitomised everything wrong with the first movie for me.
Diablo was a broken man, they all had issues. He hasn't had anyone in so long, he feels human again. It's as sad as it is pathetic. We need the original cut damn it
@@ISAAC607 Yeah I get what you mean, I don't think it's impossible for him to form a bond with the squad, but it was forced and unnatural. Gunn's a master at forming unlikely relationships (GotG as well as TSS). Definitely would love to see the Ayer Cut.
@@bensmith8597 I'm a die hard Snyder fan so that shit was my bread and butter, it was everything I wanted from JL 😂 so my review on it is definitely bias. Like in comics heroes are gods, and he captures that feeling. Shame he followed it with the zombie movie, what a load of shit.
I'd argue Amanda Waller defies expectation because she's initially presented as a character who's willing to go to horrific lengths to stop something horrible, but it turns out at the end she doesn't care about stopping Starro at all, only covering up the US Government's involvement in it. She's not only willing to let a Kaiju run rampant, she actively tries to stop the Suicide Squad from going on a suicide mission and saving the day. It seems at first like she's forcing these villains to be superheroes, but the exact opposite scenario plays out. It's not like the first film where she wants the Suicide Squad to save the world, they save the world, and then she honors their arrangement.
2 reasons. 1. The island was disposable and would've been better destroyed to her. 2. The justice league would take care of Starro anyways, without her needing to get involved.
@@markdioneeb8997 that's not the point. The point is, she was expecting someone else (i.e. Justice League, the in universe solution to any world threats) to take care of it.
The only problem that I found in this movie is everyone is so charismatic and lovable and I have no idea why Harley Quinn is in this movie in the first place. I thought Ratcatcher would be a boring character but turns out, she's so relatable.
Honestly at this point Harley Quinn is just there because she's marketable to her fanbase, and they made her so damn OP with thicker plot armor than Superman that it's so predictable she's ain't ever gonna die.
Yeah, did they even really need to add her in the movie, let alone have her the main lead of the movie despite not even showing up for 3 quarters of the movie? I mean come on, if they wanted another female in the Squad, were Killer Frost, Plastique, or even Windfall unavailable for the roster?
@@osmanyousif7849 Yes they did. At least to assure WB execs that there was at least one thing going for the movie to pull viewers in when the last movie was such a disaster and Harley was the one bright spot. After such a bad first movie, many viewers were likely very reluctant to give The Suicide Squad another chance so Harley was built-in insurance. But if/when there is another one? Harley can totally be left out at this point and they can add in another female in the Squad (who they actually have the option of killing off).
I remember in the first Suicide Squad movie, Harley, Deadshot and Boomerang were the only good parts of the movie. And I completely forgot Rick Flag was. But, in this movie, they did a good job to develop Rick Flag as a character and I even sad when Peacemaker killed him. Even though Bloodsport is just like Deadshot all over again, but he has a better character development than Deadshot for overcome his Rat Phobias and sees Ratcatcher as his surrogate daughter. Meanwhile, Deadshot and Harley were just friends and originally, they wanted to make a romantic story between them, that's kinda creepy and weird.
I liked his performance, it felt straight, Professional and well delivered, while being kind of light, cheesy and sort of depleted of emotions, which all overall perfectly fit Peacemaker as a sicko he is
Very important thing to notice. Usually when celebrities like that are put into movies, they are on secondary roles as cheap comic relief. I am impressed that Cena actually manged to play a central character with the full depth and skill that the character deserved.
The movie didn’t take itself serious like the other one did. I literally couldn’t stop laughing. Edit: Milton was the best because you don’t see him really unless you look. But that he came to help and it’s a group of freaks but one normal dude. Then him dying and later Harley calling Bloodsport Milton
I think I'm the only one who noticed Milton even before he died. I was confused why he was still w/ them when they went inside the Jotunheim. Like, "Dude, you don't have powers. Just stay in the van!"
Milton did the right thing: would you have asked him to stay behind and be executed for treason by the Army? The only proper course was the follow the "heroes" and hope and pray you wont die.
This squad really made me laugh and care for the characters. I so desperately wanted the lot of them to live and succeed My personal favorites were Rat-catcher2 and King Shark.
Polka Dot Man was the only character I really wanted to live all the way and Rat-catcher 2 since we all know probably Shark King, Blood Sport, and obviously Harley Quinn was gonna live till the end.
I just gotta say man, James Gunn has really come a long way since writing Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed He's really grown & learned a lot on how to do good storytelling in movies Look at him now - he's now the Kevin Feige of DC cinema
The best plot twist was when they entered the freedom fighters village and massacred everyone.. that was so sad but funny, I didn't know how to feel about it 😂
immediately as they captured Flag, I knew that they were the good guys and I also knew that the other team will kill them. It was very predictable. At least for me. And hence not funny at all.
Yea, the moment the shark ate the first guy I couldn't help but think they might've made a mistake. Like these were supposed to be a bunch of dangerous people but they aren't even on high alert and some people were literally brushing their teeth and doing chores. Sad but I'm glad they still won at the end.
I love how harlequin can become a heavy duty badass in seconds from being stupid asf but I only like it because I know that originally there’s calculation behind her chaos, I don’t appreciate the films making her dumbed down
Agreed. Harley is an awesome character, but the movies did dumb her down a lot. I do think that the movies are great and she's still a great character (all in my opinion, you don't have to agree)
And if she was more like the show here she is a smart girl who is crazy and who's been beten up and been with an even crazier ass clown killer. Well it makes sense she will at times just half ass or even over plan shit
I feel like you really missed the point of Amanda Waller. She wasn’t a character, she was an overarching force of nature, existing to add stakes and consequences to the story, as well as tension. I mean, the only reason why her getting knocked out was so awesome was cause just before that she was going to kill all of the main characters, and it act felt like she WOULD cause, well, she already had, so it became an honest question wether or not they would die right then and there
I would argue it a little differently. The two-dimensional 'bad government agent' is literally usurped by the three dimensional humans, almost like a statement from Gunn about how you should write characters.
@@arandombard1197 again tho, she isn’t supposed to be a character. She’s a force, something to author a rule that if they refuse her orders, she won’t hesitate to kill them without mercy. Humanising her would actually have been detrimental, as it would give the idea that maybe there IS a situation in which she wouldn’t kill them and therefore make us expect that such a situation will occur. When the group defies her and goes to fight Starro, that scene is so intense because as far as we know there is no reason Amanda Waller would ever not kill them in that situation. She’s 2 dimensional cause she’s not a person, she’s an obstacle, and yeah the other characters are better than her because of the same reason
@@judemartin6329 that’s the term I was looking for, thanks. She is a Static Character, which isn’t at all a bad thing, as it means all the other character either have to overcome her or succumb to her. It adds more options to the story, and overall makes things more interesting

Giving Harley to some random gangster to sleep with? What kinda fake edgy crap is that? That has nothing to do with the characterization of the Joker or Harley Quinn. When Harley was introduced in a CARTOON, the Joker would throw her around for successfully capturing Batman and trying to remove his mask, or for over-explaining a joke. I love how in the Peacemaker show we finally see why Peacemaker is so obsessed with peace.
Why
@@josho7138In the show White Dragon is his father, a white supremacist supervillain who raises both Peacemaker and his brothers to be aryan death machines and makes them constantly fight each other. After Peacemaker accidentally kills his brother in one such a fight, his father also develops a deep hatred and abusive behavior towards him. This makes Peacemaker reevalue his father's ideology, choosing to fight for peace instead. But he keeps the same methods and the same disregard for human life because he actually knows no better.

Also, even being violent and having pretty dark jokes, the amount of good lessons it has i never seen in a comics movie before, they talk about friendship (nanaue and ratcatcher) , family (bloodsport), about how you can do wonderful things even if you think you're trash (polkadot and ratcatcher) , how we can live peacefully with the nature (starro), romantic relationships (Harley, despite the killing part), empathy and giving up on morals to do the right thing (Flag and Peacemaker), and the list goes on
"I carry friend" such a small line yet hits differently after seeing that he almost ate her the day before showing that he really values the friendship that napcatcher extends to him
The last scene of rat catcher was cringe tbh
Wholesomeness? Cringe. They literally make jokes walking by the dead civilians at the end and then fly away smiling over their bodies.
@@OWlsfordshire Almost as if these people aren't really good guys. Weird, that.
Totally, he had this conflicted look on his face when he was about to kill Flag and Ratcatcher.

Absolutely
Yeah it was stupid, all because Will smith wanted a sympathetic character, but i think bloodsport did a much better job and you actually wanted things to work out with him and his daughter
@@Griot-Guild I absolutely adore that they actually subverted the typical "villain that happens to be a good and loving dad" thing.
When you realise the reason why Rick, Harley, and boomerang were in the distraction team was because they made Waller mad in the last movie.
I still think killing boomerang off in the beginning was a bad choice, what a waste of a great character
Even the james gunn cant tell if this was a reboot or sequel *source imdb the suicide squad trivia
Are they confirmed as the distraction team? I dont see why Waller would put Flag, Quinn etc up for death. It also wouldnt make sense that she was angry that they were sold out, i think they were meant to meet up at some point but obviously couldnt. Seems like a waste of power.
@@walloper9972 by the looks of it, she mightve been aware of Rick's behaviour regarding the secret US involvement part and how he might expose it so maybe she wanted an "oops rick died in the battlefield" plan hence him being in the distraction team.
Rat catcher had a versitile skill, and powerful, polkadot man had an insane offensive power, and shark daddy was basically a unstoppable force that could shore up their numbers issue, and to stupid to understand he couldnt have been stopped by waller himself.

Easy answer, the editors didn’t fuck over the film, the director actually cared, and the actors really enjoy their characters. All that needs to be said

Yes his hands. He was dumb and that is not king Shark. It is Groot shark. 😂
Polka Dot man is the best. He's such a unique character. And David Dastmalchian is such a great actor he's so underrated.
Don't underestimate the wall.
I love how people come up with ways to contain characters that can’t be contained in standard ways. Like, you could have a boring “here is a way to completely deactivate whatever makes them hard to contain in the first place” but you could have the “we designed something specific to this uncontainable character.”
With the SCP universe, you get a mix of both. It’s always more interesting to actually problem solve than use writer divine will.
Holy; this made me see things from a new perspective
Just 👌🏾👌🏾
Not to mention Savant first appeared in the Birds of Prey comics as well.
So Canary is indirectly responsible for his death
I totally forgot that was _the_ Savant from the Birds of Prey comics.

i think it should be noted that deadshot doesnt neccessarily want to separate from his daughter because he's a lone wolf type, but more on because he doesn't want his daughter to associate with someone like him. this is shown in how he tries to actively push away his daughter by making it seem like he didnt care about her being a criminal (or, at least, attempting to be one), just that she got caught. he wants her to see him as a horrible person because he thinks that of himself and believes himself to not be worth his daughter, AND he shows that he *does* care for her when he tried to kill amanda waller when she threatened his daughter.

Excuse me sir, but only peace remains when the Peacemaker finishes peacemaking.
The sad truth is James Gunn is not necessarily a "visionary genius
He's literally just a guy who actually read the comic books as a kid or teen - & then grew up to find a voice in cinema, so added layers of horror, comedy and legit pathos, without disrespecting the original source material I the process.
This is why he chose the Suicide Squad over Superman.
He'd have the freedom to define these characters, which as a comics reader - he Knows have only been loosely defined on the page.
And he listens to the audience
Reading the comics alone doesn't make you a good director, James Gunn is overall a great director that knows what the audience wants, period.

Harley's plot armour is based on luck, not competancy.

Her face makes me angy.
its exactly BC she's so firm in her functional cruelness that makes her interesting imo. i dont want her to change or have an evolution like any of the squaders bc her intensity is the whole point, and its chilling to see. if she does evolve, I'd rather her find a new unique way to double down on her methods. whats the fun in a character like her changing into someone sympathetic, rather than leaning into the fact that she clearly has seen enough and experienced enough to always justify her actions. shes fucking incredible as a villain

Amanda Waller was an interesting character though. Especially at the ending when she suddenly shakes out from her icy monotone to an enraged maniac.

Spoilers:
Well, I think the most interesting part about the Suicide Squad concept is that everyone (except for Harley) can die.

TRUE!

In the comics at least, most of Amanda Waller's character charisma rellies on the being the woman that made Batman back down.
Even if they hate her, she gained the respect of the Squad out of being the only person to stand up to Batman, and make him back down.

Absolutely this! Harley was good in the movie, but I wouldn't have missed her of she wasn't there.
Honestly at this point Harley Quinn is just there because she's marketable to her fanbase, and they made her so damn OP with thicker plot armor than Superman that it's so predictable she's ain't ever gonna die.

@@RatGamer16 Harley is a shitty character that only exists for sheer fan service.
@@kraios1996 incredibly awful take
@@kraios1996 well, that's fucking stupid.
This is what's called a static character.
@@kronosunleashed3845 I disagree, unless you have a quote to back that up.
Totally the opposite, Leto's Joker and Batman carried Suicide Squad.
2016 Suicide Squad: Edgelord "humour" and Will Smith being Will Smith in Deadshot cosplay.
2021 The Suicide Squad: Actual humour and all the characters being allowed to be characters.
Really? The movie looks crap from the trailer and even worse than the first one
@@amazin2point0 that your only point?
The Suicide Squad is not really that good, to be honest...
@@thedoomwader my point is that I’m surprised he thinks so because from the trailer it looks like it’ll just be some crap cram jokes in movies and looks like it would be worse than the first which wasn’t that great as it is
@@amazin2point0 but did you see it?
Peacemaker and bloodsport has a better relationship than harley and joker in suicide squad.
but joker got just 7 minutes of screen time and most of his scenes were changed so it is not fair to compare
For suuuuure
@@sarkastikcommander4555 Sorry, bro, but until WB releases the Ayers Cut, the movie we got is the movie we got and it was a poorly executed movie. Criticizing that isn't somehow a moot point just because we know there are other scenes on the cutting room floor.
Besides that point, the scenes we got are terrible anyway. In the comics, Harley disappear for months in-story and when she returned, he was so engrossed in planning his latest scheme that he hadn't noticed she'd isolated from the crime world for a few months to GIVE BIRTH TO THEIR DAUGHTER.
THAT'S Harley Quinn. That's the story we sympathized with and the woman we wanted to see saved from the Joker. I don't know what that "hubba hubba" bullshit was in that movie, but it wasn't Harley and Mr. J.
@@Cityweaver i think that movie is beyond salvage even with the Ayer cut.
Savant and Captain Boomerang have a better relationship than Harley and Joker in suicide squad
I would totally see a backstory montage for Gandalf with Johnny Cash's music as the score.
i died laughing at that
